Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

Love The Flash so far, perhaps more so than Arrow, and I really like Arrow. Could do without the heavy-handed foreshadowing, but nonetheless, excited to see where this is going (who Wells really is, how they work in the "Crisis," etc.).

No they aren't.

It's normal people who wear the skins of zombies. It lets them blend in. It is pretty much taking the original idea of covering yourself in zombie goop just that much farther. It seems like they have gone quite crazy too. Like a month ago it showed the one guys peeling off the zombie mask off the person he had killed.

I can't really imagine Kirkman going that direction with smart zombies. At least I hope he doesn't.
LOLZ...comprehension FAIL on my part. I guess that's what happens when I skim through books.

I suppose we'll soon see where Constantine skews on the quality spectrum for DC tv shows. I'm curious how the pilots ends now, considering the reshoots they did.
Almost the exact same episode until the 32 minute mark (no commercials timeframe), though the outcome of the rooftop was the same. From there it differed wildly for the reasons we all know. I actually like the changes, though they took the easy copout for actress change but they did the best they could. Out of the DC live-action shows out currently, Gotham is easily the worst.

haha I wonder how that ending will seem to people who never saw the leaked version of the pilot. That seemed like an abrupt change to me, but holy crap was that funny!
"Hey, John. Liz just ran the fuck out of town screaming about demons and spirits and shizz. Before she left, though, she told me to give you this map that she bled all over. Claims it shows people in trouble, and she says that you should help 'em. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go get tested for HIV. I know I can't die, but better safe than sorry, right? Catch ya later."
That seemed to be the gist of it, anyway. The angel's dialogue really sold it.

Very good start overall. The changes to the rooftop scene were very effective. It was great seeing how they incorporated some of the comic covers into the last scene, too. I remain pretty hopeful about the series.

Anything is better than Gotham. Dear God, reading the reviews or synopsis of episodes after I quit the second episode let's me know I made the right choice. I Hope iZombie won't reach those levels since I think it's next one coming out and I enjoy the comic, but at least it'll have a better reason for existing than Gotham.

As for Constantine, yeah it was enjoyable. Even without ever watching the original cut of the pilot, the last five minutes felt super abrupt, but I'll still keep watching. Don't know how I feel about John having two sidekick's as opposed to being the loner asshole in the comics, though I do hope we get a Death of the Endless cameo.

I like Matt Ryan in the role but he comes off as very David Tennant-like. It makes me wonder what if Tennant played an older version of Constantine, dressed in the Gracepoint costume.

Anyway, I felt the pilot although enjoyable, was very heavy handed with exposition, and they gave Constantine too much to say. I couldn't help but be reminded of season 2+3 of Supernatural, if Grimm in the beginning was kinda like season 1. I'll enjoy another monster-hunting show on the airwaves, but wonder if they can keep it up for 22 episodes if that's the goal. The writers will have to do a lot more to keep us watching if he is supposed to travel the US like the Winchester Brothers, fighting any evil creature that threatens mankind.

I would rank the DC season openers like this:

Arrow

Flash

Gotham

Constantine

I also forgot to add that the fact NBC allowed it to be so explicitly stated that Astra was dragged to hell, to be tormented for eternity, was pretty bold. I know they also have Hannibal and that show is much darker and gruesome than Constantine seems to be, but Hannibal also doesn't have the best ratings, so they could have easily tried to clean up this show even more to seem mainstream. John's interaction with Richie, showing that Con-man can be quite a scumbag to "friends", is also appreciated. They could have tried to turn him into a noble superhero wannabe for the sake of likability.

Sure, he can't smoke on screen, but that is far from his most important character trait. I'm hoping to see more of John's dark side as the show goes on. It'd also be nice if they would grunge up his clothing a little bit, because that is a bright white shirt that they have him wearing. Minor nitpick, though.

I was shocked by Astra, a little girl, being dragged to hell and tormented, but this is NBC, full of gratuitous violence. SVU had even more horrifying scenarios. Hannibal has nightmare inducing murder imagery (remember when all those people were sewn up?) Grimm has that stuff once in a while. I literally gagged when Adalind chopped off her dead gypsy witch aunt's hands.

I didn't like Constantine's exorcism spells now that I think about it. They didn't have enough panache or gravitas behind it. 8 seasons of Winchester spells will do that for me. But hey, at least the "simplicity" could mean that Constantine is WAY more powerful than we are lead to believe.

That's a good way to think about it, actually. His slight little hand wave/forehead tap kinda bugged me too, but yeah, I think you solved that nitpick for me.

And I've always assumed Grimm was a pretty clean, gore-free show - although I only watched the pilot back when it originally aired. Out of all the twisted things on Hannibal, I think the one that got to me the most was when a certain someone was cut into sections and put on display in glass cases like something in a cadaver museum.

I'm curious how long Zed will stick around after she's introduced. Will JC have two sidekicks? I don't think I'd mind that, actually. Especially if John uses Chaz as a meat-shield once per episode.

I think I'm much more excited about Captain Cold's upcoming intro on Flash, though. At the very least, he'll be better than the crazy albino version from the early 90's tv show. I'm sure this new one won't have to be freeze-framed every time they want to add his cold gun's beam to the shot. Ha!

What's really cool that they hired his brother from Prison Break to play Heat Wave! Though I wonder if they cast Dr. Alchemy/Mr. Element yet to finish the triumvirate of Flash rogues.

Grimm usually features decapitations, so that's pretty un-family friendly.

Don't think I've heard anything about him. They cast the Pied Piper and Captain Boomerang, though, if i recall. Wonder when/if they'll use Trickster.

I'm also still hoping that they have "Brother Cyrus" from Arrow pop up as Solomon Grundy on Flash at some point. That would be great. Surely they had those chemicals fall on him for a reason.

Anyone else terrified of that rumor about Jaden Smith playing Virgil in the Static Shock live-action webseries? Odd that it comes about as Will Smith is supposedly close to signing on to the Suicide Squad movie, and Jada is already on Gotham. Was kinda hoping After Earth killed that kid's "career."

Sherlock Holmes, Smaug, Stephen Strange, + more. I would say I'm disappointed by this choice, but Marvel Studios did a rather strategic move by hiring him to play the Sorcerer Supreme. This is going to be a huge money suck, and having a geeky name, as opposed to Jared Leto (who I would've liked) or Joaquin Phoenix, would guarantee tickets. Besides it's not like they're making a tv show.

Is Martin Freeman going to shave his head to play Wong? I don't know who's going to play that guy. I hope it's not Chow Yun Fat or Jay Chow.

I just assumed he ate fourth meal from Taco Bell all the time. Cheap as dirt food and his body can process all of those toxins & terribleness without the side effects the rest of us mere mortals may get.

Yikes. So, Gotham. They just had a villain called "The Goat" who basically wore a burlap Batman mask because... I dunno.

If they were going to do an episode about the rich kids of Gotham being murdered... couldn't they have found a way to work the Court of Owls into it? Make it a very disturbing episode, and have it end without the mystery being totally solved. I don't know. I'm just disappointed, first because the previews made this seem like it was going to be Scarecrow, but also because they wasted an opportunity to do an episode with some highly disturbing ritualistic killings.

Would've been perfect timing, with Halloween being so soon.

Oh, and Catgirl's one minute silent cameos are getting to be pretty funny. Bruce needs to sleep with one eye open... and seriously, does Wayne manor REALLY consist of one room? He was sleeping in it this week!

It was a rather good Bullock episode, he's such a softie! But disappointed that the "Spirit of the Goat" was way less complicated, really?! Angie DelMarco?! I wasn't expecting Court of Owls, since you're just asking too much of TV Writers.

I actually laughed at the odd relationship with Cobblepot and his mother.

WTF, Kyle Nimbus from the Flash is Victor Zsasz?

It's a little disappointing that Wayne manor features only one room, but then again it saves the producers money, plus we don't have to see the other servants! Surely you think Alfred does EVERYTHING! Bruce is obsessed with playing Jimmy Kudo, so leave him be I guess. Though it would be cool for him to explore the libraries inside the mansion.

Catigirl needs to work on her burger skills. She spent 3 minutes in there and came out with one thing. I guess the thought process is she is "selective" and taking things that wouldnt be noticed missing (but you would think a homeless person would be more desperate).

I was expecting it to be scarecrow too. Then I thought about that owls book that I read recently, but no...go with a goat killer.

They really need to show more of the mansion/manor.

You spelled Ken Watanabe wrong. Isn't he the goto Asian actor when you need an Asian actor now?

Maybe we'll finally have Jackie Cheung in a Marvel movie...or the comedy option, Jacky Chan.

Maybe they want to see how it will do first?

Super excited for most of these. I'm not sure about a Captain Marvel or Inhumans movie but Marvel is destroying the universe, I'll see anything they put out.

Waiting to see how Ant-Man 1 does.

I'm particularly interested in Doctor Strange and especially Black Panther.

I had my doubts Guardians of the Galaxy would be good, but I was wrong. As of now, i have no interest in Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Inhumans or Doctor Strange.

Hoping those prove me wrong also.

Does Thanos have any of the stones yet? I thought (maybe) one so far, but cant remember.

I laughed that Wentworth Miller wore the coat and glasses just like in the comic book. But I am very disappointed that it was Cisco that built the gun, not Snart himself. I've always got the impression that Captain Cold was a brilliant mind but always wasted it on crime, building those silly gadgets. But Miller ends up playing the same character he played on Prison Break instead of it and more. Of course, I'm excited for Heat Wave played by you-should-guess.

Agents of Shield was awesome, glad they figured out they should be Alias rather than some support staff for the Avengers. Tim Dekay (Peter Burke) was on, and I just sqeeed. He had a scene with Talbot (Burke on Burn Notice), and one with Coulson (New Adventures of Old Christine). Hells yeah.

Not surprised at Ward's escape, besides he ripped off Abel Gideon's escape in Hannibal (minus the disembowelment)

Snart not creating the cold gun is understandable, I suppose, because it matches up with the New 52 version. In Forever Evil, he told Lex Luthor that he stole the original cold gun, and then took it apart, studied it and reassembled it over and over until he figured out how to build one from household objects if he needed to.

And how awesome was that train scene? Man, I freaking love this show.

Flash has been great so far.
I agree.

Although a friend of mine doesn't agree. He doesn't read comics, but typically likes live-action superhero stuff. Apparently Flash irritates him, though. Says everyone on the show is too "goody-goody" for his liking. I told him to wait and see how they develop Caitlin and Cisco, but I think his interests skew more toward Nolan-esq, grimdark stuff. I like my superheroes to enjoy their job.

Too "goody-goody?"  I guess the Flash should be all about Barry three-hole punching people at very high speeds. Though he'll end up crushing his arm every time.

Arrow was fun, gotta love Barrowman. I was disappointed in Raysh al Ghul's hair, since he had a really cool coif in the cartoon and video games.

Anybody else here read Southern Bastards?  I just finished the fifth issue and it was amazing.  Southern Bastards and Moon Knight are my current favorite comics I'm reading.

Anyone pick up the "Rub 'N Smell" Harley Quinn annual? $5.99 is a bit hefty, but I really like the concept and the character in general. Probably going to grab that one and Deathlok #1 tomorrow.

You know, it didn't take me until Dragon Con this year to realize Harley Quinn is the female Deadpool now and that makes me so fucking sad.

I'm disappointed with Ra's in general. I'll try not to judge until he gets featured more, but my first impression is that the guy seems miscast. Nothing about his appearance, green robe and demon pendant aside, said "Ra's Al Ghul" to me. He also looked really short, but that may have been camera angles? I dunno.

Wasn't too thrilled with that whole episode, personally. Just seemed kinda lifeless. Also, Roy has clearly mastered the art of frontflipping into the path of a tranquilizer dart. Every scene with Malcom/Barrowman was good, though.

I don't mind of the short thing, since people were smaller back then, and possibly even more during the Demon's Head's original time. I agree, he looks pretty frumpy, not so much the charismatic leader of a secret organization. Maybe they should've hired Liam Neesons, though they would have to make him say "Raysh," which he is probably unwilling. You know who they could hire? Cliff Curtis, even with that fake beard he wore in that Gang Related show.

It's still up in the air whether they'll go the immortal/Lazarus pit route. Although did anyone else notice the vial of green liquid Merlyn wore around his neck with his ninja suit? I think that's what it was, but my eyes are terrible.

Supposedly they immediately tried to get Neeson for the show, but his schedule was too busy, presumably because he does five generic action movies per year. I would've liked him to reprise the role, and it would be great to see him play a more comic booky Ra's. Plus think about the ratings boost it would give the show, especially if it tricked people into thinking the show tied into the Nolan movies.

Oded Fehr (I have no idea if I spelled that correctly) would've been my top choice, though.

Constantine continues to have the same vibe of the earlier episodes of Supernatural, which is a good thing. I also like Zed a whole lot more than Liv, although she pouts a little too much. I'm liking the show overall.

They really do need to add an echo or something to JC's chants, though.

Constantine is pretty good so far. I liked the drawing of the four headed thing in her apartment. I guessing maybe they will do that whole arc?

Maybe this will get me to get through Hellblazer.  read the first 40 or 50 issues way back and couldn't get into it. The first few issues I thought were great -- with the bug demon and his friend.

The stuff that I liked, I really liked, but there was alot that bored me. I guess I will call it the hippy stuff, like the whole arc with the hippies living in RVs and stuff like that.
