Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Anybody have a site with good translations of IA/VT menu/options? I tried googling it, but even the trophy guides don't have screenshots of the menus translated.

I kinda missed 90% of the tutorial and have no idea what to press when that spiral button thing comes up. Is it all the buttons? Thanks.
You can press anything for that button; if there's a number inside the spiral, hit any button (even different ones if you want) that many times before the outer ring (which appears after the first hit) disappears.

If you wanted to open up to rhythm games Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove on 3DS is adorable. It's kind of simple and short though.

Having a hard time thinking of something that's cutesy without also being moe/fanservicey. Could you give some examples of something you liked that fit those criteria?
Something like Ragnarok Odyssey Ace (lol yes I know that's Korean not JP & not exactly super cute shōjo-ish tho kinda similar) but with a storyline/campaign? Or cute like Arpiel Online but that's an mmo that requires hundreds of hours rofl.

I'd certainly hope so...

LOL

I don't know about that. A girl I work with loves SK.

I know a girl who likes the senrans but she is a total degenerate who writes her own porn so...

If I were a younger man I might have been impressed by Shinovi Versus's weird plot juxtaposition of cute and tears but now it just all feels like a parlor trick.

Hmm okay random question sorry, lol. Are there any cute games that are not visual novels & not turn-based & not rpg where you'll have to put hundreds of hours into lol but under 100 hrs lol. Seems like everything that I think I'd wanna play is turn-based =( lol
You may want to reread your own post for clarity but I think I get the gist.

I am still too young and immature a man to appreciate cute as much as you do, but I think Rune Factory might be up your alley. RF3 and 4 especially are adorable, charming, real time action combat, but it is a very lengthy game. Sorta farming action RPG.

Croixleur is 10 minutes long each play and is cute if you think yuribait skinship is cute rather than creepy. (Shame on you if you think it's creepy. It's two girls so it's pure by definition. Duh.)

It's a tough question, you want cute but are specifically excluding the genres that generally have had the best showings in it. If I think of anything else, I'll pop back in.

Thanks for the suggestions... awww Rune Factory def looks adorable, so: games similar to Rune Factory but more actiony less simulationish then, if it exists lol..I guess the length doesn't matter at this point but hopefully not something extremely long like 500 hrs or something lol

Conquest, Birthright, and Revelation on 1 cart for 63.99 is a pretty good deal imo.

If that wasnt a thing, I wouldnt had bothered with the SE. If they didnt offer the single cart but released Revelation in physical form, wouldve bought all 3 separate games. LOL
where can you get all 3 for that price? As I would totally buy it for that low.

Fantasy Life?

Any of the rhythm games, especially Miku DX and Miracle Girls Festival?

Racettear?

Capitalism, HO!!!!
+1 for Recettear. Although, I think that's only on PC.

The Atelier series has some pretty cute art. I can't attest for the gameplay or length (as I've yet to play one), but the art is adorable. The newest trilogy, the Dusk trilogy, is said to be the easiest. The first game for that would be "Atelier Ayesha, The Alchemist of Dusk".

One game that I have played and liked would be Fairy Fencer F. The art for most of the female characters is really cute (though one is more on the sexy side). It's a fairly decent RPG, but the assets get reused a lot (you go through half of the levels in the game twice, many monsters are just reskins of previous ones with different colors). I would look into it and see if it looks interesting, but I would wait for a sale on it.

I also recommend Deemo: The Last Recital (Rhythm) and HTOL#NIQ: The Firefly Diary (side scroller?) for it's cutesy art, both on the Vita.

I'd recommend Neptunia U and Neptunia Producing Perfection, both the least grindy and shortest of the series, but you already have a cute little Histy avatar, so I think you already know or have played them.

Please switch those spoilers around.

Edit: Thank you. With my luck I'd load the page at work tomorrow and all of HR would come strolling by.

Be sure to look out for World of Final Fantasy this year. It'll be hitting the PS4 and Vita. It's basically Final Fantasy characters in chibi form running around.

I just traded someone a cartidge of Pokemon Ranger ds for a complete copy of Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove 3ds the other day.. It seems difficult as hell to locate a complete copy of that lately besides ebay-
And can anyone know why World of Final Fantasy PsVita is $59.99 at gamestopper and $39.99 on Amazon..? Probably just a generic placeholder but that would be crazy if a Vita game was $60 without a L.E. version..

I'd recommend the Atelier games as well. Those alchemists sure are adorable. I also second the Croixelur recommendation. It's really, really short though and is more of a score attack game. Moco Moco friends looks adorable though maybe not a good game...looks like a Pokemon ripoff. Those rhythm games mentioned (Mirai DX and Project Diva F) are just great and Miku is very kawaii.

I'll check out Fantasy Life on 3DS =)

sorry forgot to add non-rhythm games too oops lol

I'll check into Atelier series, that looks uber cute, tho I'm getting an impression it's like a synthesis type of game, is it that way for the whole series? Fairy Fencer F seems interesting... I'll rent it from GameStop haha jk

Yea I know about the Neptunia series xD

I totally forgot about that one lol

Uh... introducing Athena and the Mood Matrix to AA6?
Don't even bother. For the last month CAPCOM has just been issuing press releases explaining things that anyone that has actually played the series already knows. The last one was about how the investigation sections are different than the trial sections, and you can gather clues by clicking on shit. It's for new people.

Fairy Bloom Freesia or Eryi's Action maybe? They're not super long, though. I'm not sure what could fit that bit.

Eryi's Action is.. Mean to its players. Jump to the 2 minute mark on the video on its Steam page.

Along these lines I would also recommend Fortune Summoners. It's a metroidvania sidescroller that is considerably difficult due to its precise button input required to pull off attacks. You really can't get by on button mashing. Of all the cute girl games, of which I've played many, Fortune Summoners is one of the best at capturing the feeling of being a cute girl. When the girls went out adventuring to slay monsters, or had sleepovers at their friends house, I totally bought it as "this is what little girls do on their free time". Very believable character development.

Atelier is a turn based JRPG with a heavy focus on item synthesis. I guess that already trips a red flag for you, but it's my absolute favorite video game series of all time. A lot of focus on the characters and their relationships. One of the endings in Ayesha is the girls getting together to have a tea party if that gives you any idea of how light hearted the games are.

Question for people that ordered Hatsune Miku on the 3DS

What was the weight on your UPS tracking? Mine says 0.3 lb and I'm wondering if that could be the standard edition or the launch edition

Update 02/24/16 at 10:35 p.m.: Summon Night 6: Lost Borders will not release with English subtitles in Asia, but rather with Chinese and Japanese language options. Play-Asia, who originally published the announcement, has apologized for the spread of misinformation. Goddam Play-Asia.

Not coming to English...yet.
Four months ago from Best Buy with GCU.
Mine was Amazon.

Yeah, they did the same thing with SFV (introducing... Ken Masters!). It must be part of their current marketing strategy. I wonder how much they got paid for coming up with that gem.

Yeah, synthesis is a main component all the way through the series. That said, if you're looking for a cutesy, light-hearted RPG under 100 hours, I don't think there are many better places to look than the Atelier series. I'd highly recommend giving one of them a shot. (Though avoid original Rorona at all costs. If you decide to start there, make sure you get Rorona Plus. Original Rorona is terrible.)

Free PS+ Games in March. It has Galak-Z in there which isn't Japanese, but definitely inspired by Japan. The rest aren't anything that's remotely related to the thread, however Broforce is pretty awesome and is great with co-op.

pffft. At least in ayesha there wasn't much focus on anything other than the main characters ability to be a cartoon ditz. On the note of that ending I guess it must be one of those guide dang it things since I didn't trigger it. Honestly though the game was pretty weak. I would of liked it more if there was no time limit so I could do whatever I want explore, do sidequest ect.

If whoever is interesting in playing this game do yourself a favor and use a guide so you save time if you want to go for the other endings and bosses and such. Part of the reason I lost so much time was I didn't think about registering items at stores so I would be able to buy them there instead of having to craft them until about half way through the game. The other part was I had to grind cash since you need 10k for the hot air balloon you are forced to buy to continue the story and I didn't have it on me at the time.

Basically make the sandals that cut down on travel time, register items instead of recrafting them, and do the monthly auction house contests and that will save alot of time.
