Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Watched a few episodes of WIXOOS last night. It's been on my que for a while. It's enjoyable. Reminds me a lot of Madoka since it's starts off as a very innocent magical girl anime but quickly gets dark and a little disturbing.

Dropped Joker Game. I really thought I would like this but I'm just forcing myself at this point. I had hight hopes but it just fell flat with me.

Amazing fight scenes and it's got that gritty 90's anime look. I love it. I couldn't recommend it more
o_O you watched very different 90s shows as I did, because my 90s shows didn't constantly have obvious CG everywhere :p

don't get me wrong most of attack on trains looks good, but especially on the train most things are clearly CG. The princess gets the worst of it looking poorly designed at times. But it's clearly a modern show going for more of a high budget animated feel and only partially getting there.

I watched Journey to Agartha the other day. Pretty decent movie, however it felt super Ghibli to me, or at least tried too.

I could see Laptua, Nausicaa, Mononoke and various others in the character / world design.

RE: Zero [EP4-5]

This got a little lighter. It's finally obvious that Subaru has major hots for Emilia. The reset reminds me of playing a video game multiple times. Subaru knows how to play the field more effectively each time but he gets tired of doing it.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress [EP2-3]

This is the action anime of the season. I can totally see this airing on Toonami late nights.
The reset part of RE: Zero got a little confusing in episode 5 and I guess to your point, it feels a little bit like it's getting old (and the main character feels the same way!). I still like it, but I'm feeling a bit more cautious about it. Kabaneri is still great.

I remember this drove me nuts when I saw the GITS original movie...and I was still upset when the GITS stand alone complex came about because it was still shitty CG.

Anyone have an opinion on Eden of the East? Not sure if I should watch that after brotherhood.

I guess there's some explanation why he gets reset to certain moments. I don't find it getting old at all. I think it's rather intresting.

Finished season 1 of WIXOSS. The brother love almost killed it for me. I hate that shit.

It's enjoyable. I think you also have to watch the movie to get the full story.

Eden of the East is from the same guy that directed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It's not as layered since the story is a lot simpler, but it has a similar high level of quality.

I'm just talking about the character designs & overall look of the show, not the CG. Something about it just makes me think Ninja Scroll, Street Fighter and other non-bubbly anime from the time. It's hard to explain, but I got a sense of nostalgia from some scenes.

"Non-bubbly anime" - ah, what a great phrase, gonna have to remember that one - that's what I'm going to use to describe my favorite "genre" of anime now... Thanks for that, Rodimus!  That's exactly what I look for in anime - I just cannot stomach all that cutesy, moe, "bubbly" stuff that is at least 80% of all anime out there...

I like bubbly anime but you need non-bubbly sometimes.

TBH I seriously don't know what the fuck I'm talking about when it comes to anime.

Finally got around to watching Pokemon XY&Z Episode 25. Holy fuck ing crap. That might legitimately be my favorite battle ever in this series. The animation, the intensity, the strategy used, the music, everything is pretty much perfect. This show just set a new benchmark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9qEiPVNG2c

As someone who doesn't watch Pokemon, that looked like a great battle when compared to other anime with similar battles where things work like that. Clearly this had more impact for you because of the context (Pokemon). I can't get into Pokemon, but glad you like it. I'm looking forward to all the good shows of the season having their next episode this weekend myself (sans Kabaneri).

But you HAVE to watch the original Pokemon dub for Eric Stuart's various hilarious noises as James
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVFRxflI7Is

The problem with Eric Stuart is that he lost whatever talent he had during Johto. James became a bigger stereotype and couldn't emote one bit while his Brock was just a nicer Kaiba.

While Jimmy Zoppi's James and Brock may have terrible voices (though not as bad as Meowth), the acting behind them is far superior.

Honestly, if the TV series dub was as good as Pokémon Origins, despite some questionable translation, I wouldn't complain so much. But now not even the movies have good dubs anymore.

Caught up with a few shows last night.

Flying Witch - Continues to be a joy. Loving it. Just a simple, comfy show.

Assassination Classroom - This is wrapping up. It'll be a shame once it's gone. Gonna miss Koro Sensei. Nagisa going super assassino next episode. Can't wait.

Kinavier - This is getting pretty good. It's like the anime version of The Breakfast Club.

Kiznaiver's big issue is it not having any subtlety to it. Mari Okada doesn't seem to know how to get a theme across without being as heavy-handed as possible. That and the characters are extremely generic. A shame, since the show looks great.

Kiznaiver is very heavy handed. Everyone going into detail about their personality every other scene is weird. Nobody talks like that. But to see these oddballs share an unlikely bond is entertaining. I wonder who the couples will be at the end.

Is The Lost Village worth checking out?

The word on The Lost Village,is that it's unintentional comedy gold (also another Mari Okada series).
I'll back this statement. I've been watching it and I thought the show was really stupid (it's still stupid) and has gotten to the point where I LOL while watching. I wouldn't waste time watching it honestly.

For Kiznaiver, it has gotten more interesting, but I still don't think it's any good.

RE: Zero substantiated a theory I had after the last episode at the end of this one.
I think everyone in that mansion is out to kill him on the main dude's orders because he doesn't trust him. That or he's the actual villain looking to kill Emilia. All the oni and demon talk quickly established that Rem/Ram are summoned demons of some kind working for the head dude.

I'm already watching too much this season so I guess I'll pass on Lost Village.

As for Kiznavier it's probably the weakest show I'm still following this season. Still I find some of the relationships interesting enough to stick with it.

I dropped Joker Game. The payouts for the "mysteries" weren't very good. This was a big disappointment.

Probably going to drop Bungo Stray Dogs. I only watched the first 2 episodes. Unless anyone here recommends to stick with it I may give it another shot.

Dragon Ball Super - Took them almost 40 episodes but it's actually sorta kinda good. (the animation is still shoddy)
Yeah I've enjoyed it. Standard DBZ fare, which I won't complain about. The next episode looks dumb, but we'll see what kind of story they try to cobble together before the next main plot hits.

Hundred....fan service hell. "Hi, I'm going to fly around the audience with my mouth open, faux singing, while the camera focuses on my crotch and ass in this see-through outfit!!". Yup, that's quality anime.  :wall:

BTW, in case you haven't heard, the upcoming arc starting in June was leaked by Toriyama on the Toei website.

There's an Evil Goku in the alternate timeline, and Future Trunks must return to the main timeline to get help.

That sounds awesome haha. Can't wait

So they're doing another Turles? Cool to see Future Trunks back. I guess he'll be joining the Universe 7 team

I was thinking about Hundred but I haven't really heard much about it. Besides the blatant middle school fan service is it worth a shoot?

Nope, not yet

Currently watching Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai and enjoying it so far. These coming of age stories really hit me now that I'm 30.

Just... shorten it to AnoHana...

That is way too long to read.

Honestly, I still liked Tari Tari better. Coming of life, more realistic scenarios, different motivations, and less bawling.

The only other story of which I'm aware is a short one-shot manga. I have the original pages I could scan and upload if you're interested.

Would love some more myself. The show has such an innocent magical charm to it.
Thanks for the offer but I'm good. And yes, it's overflowing with charm. Love the animation. Sucy is the best.

Finished Konosuba. It was okay. MC is kind of a dipshit. The story doesn't ever really go anywhere and the characters don't develop much. But it's a light show,. I guess if you want to watch a fantasy anime that's a little silly and not to deep it's okay. And there's the fan service if you like that sorta thing.

My next anime to catch up with is Asterisk War. These anime are a guilty pleasure. It's not original at all. In fact the premise is lazy and an obvious copy/paste of a butt-load of anime, plus loaded with tropes. But I do enjoy these shows from time to time. In small doses.

Is it time to pick up Clannad? I look at pictures of it and absolutely hate the art style. It's really the only thing holding me back.

pick up clannad but understand.

the first half of it isn't very good.

the second half is mostly set up.

and clannad after story is where the series is actually a great watch.

thus there is a good chance you won't be feeling it in the first season, but the payoff in the second season is well worth it to me.

Just finished the series this afternoon. 7/10. Too much unnecessary crying/whining. Cute story overall.

EDIT: going to give Tari Tari a try.

Why did I just read this in prose?

That's a lot of time to dedicate for a show to get good.

That's what I was thinking. But it took Steins Gate about 8 episodes to get good. And when it got good it got really damn good.

My daughter and I watched Little Witch Acdemia tonight. She loved it. Probably going to show her the second episode /movie tomorrow.

It is a lot of time, I didn't make it on my first try. In fact when it was originally coming out I hated the show. I made it through the first 5 episodes or so but it was just random girls doing cute crap and it was annoying.

Given the praise for it when it came out in english I decided to give it a second go. Still did not like the beginning but then an odd thing happened for a series of this type.

very minor spoilers

They picked a girl o_O.

After that with the story just focused on that route I started actually caring about the characters and what was going on.

The feels man, the feels. I am hard pressed to think of a series that hits harder with feels when all is said and done.

The beginning of Clannad is just a normal, slice of life with lots of comedy. Then it suddenly becomes a serious drama. The first season is a lot lighter than the second (until the end). The second one made me hate a certain person because they were being a complete d-bag. I just couldn't put myself in their shoes at all. It defied my comprehension that someone could act that way. It was still great, just made me raise my fist and rage every now and then.
