Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

I just watched Haifuri and so far it's better than the rest I've watched despite the fact that my initial impression was "this looks really dumb". Might still end up that way, but not terrible so far. Kiznaiver was ok, kind of an odd show, but might get better. Kind of bummed there isn't another episode of RE: Zero this week. I guess we got an upfront double-header. Ah well.

episode 2 of re:zero came out today. just watched it. was fun.

So out of curiosity, for those that are familiar with dub actresses, who would you all like to see play Kyoko in Skip Beat! and why? Also, if you haven't pledged yet, go pledge!! :) Also there's an AMA on reddit at 9pm EST today.

Now that Parasyte has ended, Toonami is replacing it with HunterXHunter.

Should I be excited?  I know it's from the same person who created YYH so that's a plus.

Yes, it's very good. But I do remember it taking me a couple episodes to really get hooked.

I love toonami for bringing anime to the masses, but watching these dubs is like watching a completely different show. Am I in the minority?

Of course it is. Just like watching Japanese dubs of American shows will be completely different than hearing the original English voice cast.

you should be excited that you will get to watch one of the better shonen series out there that does a number of things right.

but you will also be able to join a fandom that is jerked around the most as it's an ongoing series that still only has 10 or so chapters not adapted because the creator often goes on hiatus for very long periods of time.

for me the series is a slow start, great middle, and meh last arc as the last arc just kind of goes on and on and on.

I almost exclusively watch anime with it's original VA staff unless it makes my ears bleed and there's a dub available (Corpse Princess comes to mind)

as for kyoko from skip beat....

I would have to think about it, but first person that comes to mind would be Wendee Lee as I think she can do the angry parts and cute parts well. I am sure there is someone better though, just the first one I thought of.

I will typically watch stuff dubbed if it exists, I watch plenty in japanese though.

I'm a very strict subber with anime - it's those dubs that make my ears bleed.  Lol, truthfully, I wouldn't even be able to name 5 English VA's off the top of my head...

But basically, I listen to Japanese anime in Japanese because it's Japanese anime - and that's the whole point of it. Why bastardize something that is so good to begin with??

Definitely, I agree with your point. I also think you are on to something here. I'm thinking Married With Children with Japanese dubbing would be hilarious.

I have to admit when I first started to really get into anime Cowboy Bebop was my favorite. I loved the voice actors but when I finally watched it in Japanese I could not believe how much more entertaining it was to me.

so this pied piper news (people doing the skip beat kickstarter)

rumor is that Kaiji is one of the shows she is looking into to do next, but she confirmed she is aiming for genre busting shows and maybe sports shows for future releases.

she has potentially 3-4 more shows lined up and ideally will be able to get semi regular releases going (perhaps a few a year)

one of those shows is not Hyouka, but during the reddit AMA she has confirmed that she is going to look into what would need to be done to get rights to release Hyouka.

edit: she actually just gave more details about what might be to come in the near future

There's 1 project for this summer with Directions (the producer for Time of EVE). It's related to dir. Yoshiura or Time of EVE.

And there's a feature animated film that I love, and I've confirmed that the rights are available. I will put together an offer on that title in the next few months.

And... there's another older animated feature that I already put an offer on, but no reply yet.

she is also confirming they are going to try to get international rights when they can and that the next project should be an international project.

You're literally the only person I've ever heard that prefers Japanese Bebop. Even the Japanese staff and cast prefer the English dub.

because I can multitask while watching dubs?

because current english dubs tend to be of good quality?

because just because it is done by the original voice actors doesn't make it better, tons of japanese voice work isn't great either, a lot of people just can't detect the poor quality acting because of the language barrier.

because the english dubs often care more about making sure things fit the mouths and worry more about whether what they are saying makes sense than the japanese voice work :p (tons of pannels I have been to have covered how bad the japanese fit some things and how bad they are with details at time leaving wrong dates and historical info in stuff, or saying right leg when it shows left on screen just because the script says something else :p)

I mean it boils down to watch what you enjoy, but there are plenty of reasons to localize and enjoy something made from another country without the original countries voice work in it. English dubs are often well done creative works of their own that often have a bit different feel, but in no way means that they are wrong.

I guess it had more to do with the fact that the vibe of the Japanese sub is more dark in a way. Very noir in their performances.

Are we really getting into the sub vs dub again?

it's a cycle of anime discussion, I don't think anyone is outright trying to say that people are wrong for watching one or the other this time though :p

but you are right, lets move onto something else.. uhhhh. here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXaLo1huGZ0

Benefits of subs is it's harder to tell when the Japanese voice actors are doing a shitty job. Although it's gotten to the point where it sounds like the same 3 people voice every character in every anime. Also Phoenix's voice in the Phoenix Wright anime is awful and way miscast and makes him sound like he's 5. Looking forward to the dub of that.

so skip beat just got another 5k backer and is now sitting at a little over 1k away from being funded (and thus a little over 36k for blu rays)

man I hoping being close gets some people to jump on though... I was planning on making pork for dinner and now I might have to go out and get some steak :p

Haha I was about to post this here too. Yay for whoever else took the plunge. Let's hope they don't back out saying "oops"

Finally going to watch My Hero Acdemia tonight. Can't wait.

Also thinking about getting back into Asterisk Wars.

Besides that I'm watching Joker Game, JoJo and Re: Zero. All of which I love.

Any recommendations now that this season is a few weeks in?

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri

were the two that impressed me the most so far. one of which you are already watching so I guess maybe give attack on trains a try (the second show :p)

The voice acting is the least of that show's problems. It looks like it was made 10 years ago, along with them just ripping the script directly from the games.

I have only seen a few random episodes of Bebop on Adult Swim, over 3 years ago. I do have the Amazon Exclusive Blu-ray set in my collection, so whenever I do get the chance to watch it straight through, I'll be doing it in Japanese too, since I already know what the dub sounds like.

And yay on Skip Beat! making the initial $155K funding! Now onward to the Blu-ray!

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress [EP1]

This was a treat. Just a jumble of different elements. It's steampunk Walking Dead/Attack on Titan. It sounds weird but it works. I can't wait to see more of this. I love the character designs. It has this early 90's anime look and it makes me feel nostalgic. I think Battle Angel Alita & Ninja Scroll for some reason.

My Hero Academia [EP1-2]

I knew I would like this. I'm not familiar with the manga but Is this expected to be a long running Shonen similar to One Piece & Naruto or is it going to be a shorter run?

I'll have to check out that Iron Fortress one. For My Hero Academia, I'm guessing it will end up being long running, but there aren't nearly as many chapters as those shows currently available. I want to say it's in the mid-100's. Don't read it though as I prefer to watch anime over reading manga.

my hero is going to be a 13 episode run.

most likely there will be another season this fall or winter though.

Ideally it will just get 24-26 episodes a year and can keep coming out without any filler added.

The people in Iron Fortress need to take survival lessons from the Walking Dead. They can't kill zomies/kabaneri worth shit. In some shots it looks like they're practically sticking out their necks to get bitten. But I'm not sure of the rules on how to kill kabeneri yet. Can't you just cut off their heads or do you have to blow up the shiny thing on their chest?

Kinda spoiler-ish. But just in case:

Unlike zombies from WD it seems the process to turn into a kabaneri is much quicker. Which is why they don't hesitate to kill anyone suspected of being bit.

The show at the end of the day is well-produced action schlock. It's not to go into expecting any thematic depth to it.No subtlety to it,like all of the director's other shows.

Just saw the promotional poster on anidb and Mumei looks like wonder woman lol. I'll have to check this one out now

Weekly update:

Sailor Moon Crystal: Continues to be worlds better than Seasons 1 & 2, although the rubbery animation during the henshin and attack sequences does bother me. I also like that the other non-Usagi characters get minor character moments, even if it's only a few seconds long, which was a major problem with the last two arcs.

My Hero Academia: Again, this show is what I need after the depression that was Batman v Superman, though I can't wait until Deku gets his powers.

Dragonball Super: Good fight, but once again dragged down by subpar animation. Didn't even need to pause it this time, as pretty much every time Goku or Vegeta got hit they went wildly off-model.

Ace Attorney: Continues to be up and down. The introduction of Maya was well-handled, but Gumshoe was not (plus, he seems skinnier than in the games). Phoenix's clue-gathering was rather clumsily handled, but I will say the end with him and Maya in the Detention Center was extremely well done.

Gundam Unicorn Re:0096: Again, mostly the same as OAV Episode 1. Still beautiful, still haunting. Can't wait until the Unicorn itself appears next week.

Gundam Thunderbolt: Very mixed about this miniseries. On one hand, it is very pretty, the battles are fast-paced and exciting while still keeping it within Universal Century physics, the look at all the amputees and horrors of war is well done, and the music gives the show its own style. But, on the other hand, the storytelling is rushed to all hell, and the writers seem to hate women. Of the 5 women we see on-screen 2 are background fodder and have no lines or names, 1 is literally only seen for 30 seconds crying over a dead lover, and the other 2, the only named ones of Karla and Claudia, spend 90% of their screen time depressed and/or crying. And then there's just the general pointlessness of the story itself since the One Year War (especially the timeframe covered) has way too many sidestories as it is.

Gundam AGE: My God, Generation 3 was even stupider than I had read. Started out decently enough, but once Kio got kidnapped the show went to all hell. Doesn't help that the toyetic design of the Gundams went into overdrive with several one-off weapons that are disposed of 5 minutes after being introduced. There were some positives, though. Asuno was a badass and I liked his pirate crew. I also found both Senric and Natola (despite her terrible last name) extremely interesting and I wish they interacted with the cast more. I also watched the Memory of Eden OAVs and they started and ended well by giving more depth and screen time to Asemu and Zeheart's friendship and Zeheart's fall (which were glossed over in the anime itself), but when the OAV actually covered events from the series it was typical compilation movie badness. Overall, AGE is just as bad as everyone said. Not sure if it or Destiny is the worst ever, but it's neck and neck. Next up for me is Reconguista.

It is so good. Was planning to ignore it for as long as I could so I could binge watch it all. Well im happy at least I was able to do that with One Punch Man. That show blew my socks clean off.

I need to catch up on Thunderbolt. It seems super random to me as there's no plot build up and no context to anything. Yeah, AGE is ok, not up to par with the other Gundam shows.

Thunderbolt is pure eye candy. It has no narrative substance whatsoever. If this was made in the era of Wing and G, it'd likely be forgotten.

Just got finished watching Pokemon XY&Z Episode 22. I never knew I needed a head-banging, heavy metal, rocker Pikachu in my life, but I do now. I hope those two come back in future episodes, as they are hilarious.

But Serena cosplaying as Ash was just as adorable as I thought it would be and if I weren't already firmly on the Serena/Satoshi ship, I would be. Though the implication that Serena changed her clothes literally right in front of Satoshi is hilarious given the episode.

Next week, Satoshi gets a Mega Ring and battles Alain and his Mega Charizard X once again. It's gonna be so sweet.

Ok, I watched a bunch of stuff. First episode of Kabaneri was interesting. I found the last part kind of BS and dumb, but whatever, let's see how they roll with it. I also started watching Kuromukuro. That one was a fun watch, so far it's solid. I also just watched Big Order, which was also interesting. Have to say the end was disturbing, but I guess that's what comes out of the head of the guy that did Mirai Nikki. I just kept cheering Ichigo, I mean Eiji, onwards!

Watching Haikyuu and really enjoying it. The characters are unique among themselves, funny, and the suspense is actually pretty damn good. I was never really a huge fan of volleyball, but I'm definitely enjoying this anime. I think I'm on episode 15 of the first season.

It's funny how a well written anime can get you into a sport you have no interest in. Yowapeda did the same too.
