Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Welp, Rakugo will have a season 2, which is awesome. A little shocked by some of the things in this episode as it transitions poorly from the past to the current. Either way, let's see what season 2 brings to the table. Hopefully something good!
I'm also happy to see a season 2 is in the works.

It's pretty obvious who the father is, and kinda creepy when you think about it.

I tried watching Bakemonogatari and I didn't really get it. Too much banter. I got 4 or 5 episodes in. Is it something I should stick with or if I'm not enjoying it at this point should it just stay dropped?

Decided to go back and finish up a few Gundam series I never completed. Lord help me, I started with Gundam AGE. It's amazing how the Mobile Suits on that show look more model kit-y than the actual model kits on Build Fighters. And that moment where everybody decides to commit treason set to happy music. Joy.

In good Gundam news, Unicorn Re:0096 was good, though I think it was just the first half of OAV!Episode 1. I'm curious if the new footage will be as high quality as the original footage.

Well I watched the first episode of Ace Attorney for the hell of it. It is by far one of cheapest looking shows in recent memory. It really hits you when you see the poorly rendered CG courtroom and audience. It looks like an early digipaint show. I haven't played any of games, but it's so obvious they ripped the script directed from them. You'd think they'd think some liberties with it,but at the end of day it's a terrible ad for the games.

Yeah, I think I might drop it since all it does is go through the game word-for-word. It might help me solve one of the last cases I never finished cuz I stopped playing it for a while and it doesn't exactly catch you back up when you get back lol

They've said that the game would be an adaptation of the first two games with some original content here and there for world building.

Just watched the first episode of My Hero Academia. I really hope this gets better cuz I wasn't blown away by that first episode...

Haevn't seen the anime yet, but the manga does start off pretty blah. It gets better once it gets to the Hero School and all the side characters get involved.

Everyone watch Gintama episode 153. You don't even need to know anything about the show. The entire episode is a build up one simple joke. I rarely ever find anime funny but this one had me chuckling.

RE: ZERO was fascinating though. Kind of melds a few ideas together and I liked it. I could never get into Gintama, but I'll see what that episode does for me.

I think I may finish code geass.

I'm renting Anime from the library, so my selection is limited to DVDs and blus (I actually bought some of the rare ones they removed from circulation like "Cat Soup", "Catnapped", and "Mask of Zeguy"), but is there a recent series that is out that you guys/gals would recommend?

I watched M & hachin, the first 48? episodes (blu ray part 2 or something like that) of Fairly Tail, but other than those I haven't watched much "new" stuff.

If your library has it, pick up Yona of the Dawn. It's somehow both slow paced and moves fast. Though I recommend watching the sub. I have no idea why FUNimation cast Monica Rial and Chris Sabat in the lead roles. If you have any kind of WiFi available, it's also on FUNimation's YouTube channel.

Thanks, but none of the libraries in my area have it. They have some of the manga, but not the anime.

They do have unlimited physic squad, D-Frag, buddy complex all complete series on bluray. Are any of those good?

I'd like to hear your reaction. I'm around ep. 158 and Gintama has been amazing for the last few episodes.

I can understand that Gintama is hard to get into (being 300+ episodes long). And I will admit it starts out kinda meh and the show is all over the place. It's really hit or miss with some episodes. But when it's good it's really fucking good.

Haven't followed this much anime in a while.

Gundam AGE - Up to Episode 10. Already reaching Destiny levels of stupid and the Diva hasn't even transformed yet.

Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3 - Looks like the production staff learned from their mistakes. There's more goofiness here than in all of the first two seasons combined while still retaining the drama. Will be interesting to see this arc animated since the original anime changed a LOT during Sailor Moon S. The redone transformations scenes are also a vast improvement over the CGI terribleness of the original seasons', all while keeping the spirit of the original anime's transformation sequences intact. Also, they really need to switch the opening and ending of the season. The opening is pretty blah, especially after Moon Pride, while the ending is really, really awesome.

Pokemon XY&Z - Serena's Performance arc frustrates me. It took a long time to introduce, a lot of the performance battles are rushed since they cram everything into one episode most of the time, and it seems even more filler-y than the Appeals from the Contests. But they're just so pretty to watch! And Serena herself is a really fun character to boot. I am curious as to what the anime will do now, though. Satoshi's battle with Urup is coming soon since it was in the preview footage, as well as another battle with Alain, but since the Pokemon League isn't until late Summer/early Fall, I wonder how much will be taken up with the Flare-dan arc.

Dragonball Super - And we go from a well animated show to a crappy animated show. The actual episode was all right, with Vegeta going Blueper Saiyan out of nowhere, but the shitty animation really dragged things down.

Ace Attorney - It was literally the first case in animated form. Same poses, same dialog, same everything. Combined with rather spotty animation, that is kind of a letdown. Hoping future episodes will be at least visually better.

My Hero Academia - A pretty decent start to the show. Midoriya's plight was well established and I see his younger self's excited expressions becoming very meme-worthy. But I'm a sucker for superhero stuff, so I can't wait until Midoriya gets his Quirk and starts training at the school.

Gundam Unicorn Re:0096 - Said this earlier, but yea, it's just the first half of Episode 1. A little surprised they've already got the dub out, though, and they're not charging extra for it like The Origin.

Haven't seen the latest DB Super. Too busy with work now to catch up on anime. I did watch Gundam Unicorn despite the art looking like a remastered 80's anime. The ending song was money. I'll keep watching to see how it goes. The girl with the 80's hair style is a turn off though.

Well, it takes place 3 years after Char's Counterattack, so of course it's going to look similar. Bright Noa even becomes a major player near the end, though one thing to watch out for is if the series will give any lip service to Hathaway's Flash.

My only Gundam shows that I've watched are Gundam AGE (which you are having the lovely privilege of dealing with now), MSG 00, and the recent one, Iron Blooded Orphans. So all that backstory you're alluding to goes right over my head :D

Let me ask, what's up with this new Gundam Unicorn? Is it a remake or remastered? I tried watching the original and found it boring. But then again I didn't give it much of a chance. Quit after 2 episodes.

It's closer to a remake, but it uses the original OAVs. There will be new stuff, since the OAVs can only fill up about 13-14 episodes and this will be a 25 episode series. I assume they will add in stuff that was cut out of the novels, but the ending implies it will have the same ending.

Ah. Well, Unicorn follows the Universal Century timeline. It goes Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char's Counterattack, Unicorn, F91, Victory, Reconguista in G, and then Turn A. 08th MS Team and 0080 occur near the end of the original series, 0083 occurs between the original and Zeta, IGLOO takes place at various points, Origin is a prequel, and Thunderbolt is kinda/sorta an AU/sidestory.

I didn't know Turn A takes place in the UC. I always thought it was something like a hub to all the other timelines.

BTW when is the Orgin out? I need to keep up with that.

Turn A is the ultimate end to all Gundam series. At least, the pre-SEED series.

As for Origins, the first two episodes are already out, but it's only available in premium subsriptions or the super expensive DVD/Blu-ray sets.

So only 2 episodes of Orgin are out. Then I'm caught up.

Dagashi Kashi [END]. It was mildly amusing. I think I liked the opening & ending more than anything. It has a tiny cast of only 5 characters in the entire show. My favorite being the dad who unfortunately gets the least amount of screen time. And it's another show without closure.

Ojisan & Marshmellow [END] This one doesn't seem to get much love but I enjoyed it. You can watch the entire season in 30 minutes, seriously. Each episode was only 3-4 minutes long. It kinda reminded me of "My Love Story" as being a unconventional rom/com.

Galko-chan [END] This was another fun short. 7 min per episode. It's just a show about taboo talk. Like nipple size, pubic hair, periods, etc. So any longer and it would be too much so Galko was perfect as a short.

Ok, watched the latest DB Super. Maybe I wasn't paying attention but everything seemed fine? Has anyone watched the first episode of Macross Delta? I hope it improves, because I was really, really put off by the dancing fighters and other BS going on. Also, the girl with the heart shaped boner was creepy too. Let's hope it doesn't put the franchise to shame...

Joker Game had a good first episode. I hope it doesn't turn into right-wing nonsense like Gate. Love the character designs and the art direction nailed the period. Promising stuff so far.

The Saiyan fight was good. I can tell the quality got bumped up a little. Vegeta is obviously going to lose against Hit, but it was nice to finally see him in the limelight the last few episodes.

Plan to watch Joker Game tonight. It looks like something I would like. Also going to try Re: Zero.

I'm going to let this anime season breath another week then start finding out whats good and what's shit.

Joker Game was good but it didn't do the job of establishing itself in Japan 1937. I felt like this could've taken place in any year. Regardless I enjoyed it. I'll let this one sit for a few weeks so I can binge.

Without knowing it Re: Zero was the show I was needing this season. Yet another "trapped in a RPG" anime. Why do I love these so much?

it's fine. Toei started off by shoving a bunch of newbies on the series, but they are clearly getting better and they have put in more people now so the show looks good now.

anyone that complains about it merely forgets the fact that we originally got the dvd versions of dbz which were fixed versions, just like super will be fixed for dvd release.

because despite having a similar starting setting they mostly feel different and have better writing than a lot of other shows because the focus was on the writing and not the art?

It's a lot harder to get someone to like a generic tsundare character if you can't make them actively see a super cute/hot girl. Thus you tend to have to have a bit more depth to the characters :p

I guess. Or maybe I subconsciously want to be pulled into a fantasy RPG myself.

I still feel the animation is lacking a lot of key frame animations. It doesn't help that I usually watch Super right after Pokémon XY&Z, which has far superior animation.

Any chance of getting a new Gundam Build season? Since I'm too lazy & cheap to build one it's easier to just watch a show about Gunpula.

Nothing's been announced yet. There were 2 OAVs released, one for each season, but that's it so far.

Given that Unicorn and IBO are the current TV Gundam, I think a Season 3 won't happen until after Unicorn.

they will likely get fixed in the dvd release.

either way if you want super to look great watch the ace attorney anime first :p

well who doesn't?

I mean it would be amazing to be able to just go outside, fight low level monsters for money and to get more powerful. I mean rooms at an inn and food and what not would only require like 10 minutes of work each day. an 8 hour work day would likely be good enough to buy whatever games you want, and all you would have to do to get a home is level up and make more money. Even if death was a real risk could just do life sword art online style and only do areas that are 10 levels below you :p

I'm not expecting much since I've never been a big fan of Toei's in-house animation studios, but whatever.

And yea, Ace Attorney's animation pains me, especially since Layton vs. and Dual Destinies had well animated cutscenes. As are the cutscenes for AA6 that have been leaked so far.

Ok, so I just watched Twin Star Exorcists and Bungou Stray Dogs. The second show bored me to tears in the first episode. I will give it two more before I drop it. Twin Star Exorcists had some shitty subs and one of the main guys has all canine teeth which I find stupid, but it seems ok so far. Neither struck a strong chord :(

I just watched EP.1 of Bungo Stray Dogs and thought it was very well done. Ill check out Twin Star Exorcists on your recommendation. :D

I've already decided if this happens to me (and it just may, don't judge) I'm going to be a priest or some kind of support mage. I'll steroid everyone up with buffs and sit back and let them hog the glory. Meanwhile I'm smoking a cigar and nursing a highball of Jack under a tree. I'd be in the inn every night and blow all my coin on food and drink.

I think I've thought about this way more than I should have.

Well Attack on Trains was exactly what I expected. Lots of yelling, some speedlines, and a mysterious girl who is the key to all this. Not expecting that much since it's done the anime industry's version of Zack Snyder. It sure looks gorgeous though, which am not expecting to last since WITalways has a meltdown in production at some point. It's good popcorn so far.

Attack on Train eh? Sounds interesting :whistle2:o

I finished Grimgar earlier this evening, not bad, not good. Very..."meh". Overall, interesting story, but as mentioned a few pages back, a lot of still frames. Felt lazy, and the pacing didn't help either. I would say this is forgettable...6/10.

Going to give Servant X Service a try. A nice change of pace from the fantasy and sci-fi I've been watching lately. Seems like a fun slice of life series. The manga originally caught my eye, but thankfully there's an anime to try out.

I also have Bakemonogatari and Haikyuu!! (S1?) queued up.

Haikyuu!! is great. Really enjoyed that one and S3 is coming up in the fall I believe.

I just watched the first episode of the Sakamoto anime. Wasn't impressed. Will see if it gets any better or stays stupid.
