YMMV- Gamestop and Best Buy are receiving NES Classics. UPDATED

Still generally have no interest in getting one of these (I have my actual NES in case I really want to play it).  That all said, I wouldn't mind picking one up to have and play with when the desire to go down memory/nostalgia lane comes on.

Problem is the lion's share of these things are being bought by scalpers - which just stinks.  Absolutely no way would I ever pay more than MSRP.  As someone with a real job, and a modicum of interest/curiosity but a level-headed practicality, I am NOT waiting in a line at 5am to pick this up, nor do I see any justifiable reason to fall prey to Nintendo's senseless business tactics.

Nintendo is doing its customers no favors in pulling this kind of garbage, and I suppose I'm just now old enough (and wise enough) to refuse to let them string me up like this.  For me, either Nintendo gets its s&#t together and stocks this item the way it easily can AND should, or I'll just keep throwing my money against its competition, Sony's PS4 and Sony's and Microsoft's back catalog, which frankly I see as better value, especially when I don't have to deal with the ridiculous hassle (and Nintendo's scalper community's hustling).

I understand Nintendo wants to generate interest, but at some point, it SHOULD care about pleasing its core customers who pay to keep it in business.  An easy pre-order opportunity for its core Wii U base (via their emails- which Nintendo HAD) would have been a nice gesture, but this is Nintendo - who I increasingly feel couldn't give two f**ks about its customers.

This is in part why the company keeps bleeding core players every generation.  I hope they know some of their supporters (like me) are reaching a threshold point.  I can more easily spend my money on other games and other experiences, so here's hoping Nintendo corrects some of its incredibly hostile/unkind tactics.

To begin with, it can STOCK this freaking item so its loyalists like me can actually get one without missing work, fighting scalpers, or doing obscenely ridiculous things.  We just want to play the games, Big N.  Stop. Being. A dick.

2 new GS locations popped up the one in NYC has been there for a week, I think it is an inventory error.

106th & Broadway,2764 Broadway,New York NY 10025
Virginia Gateway,7336 ATLAS WALK WAY,GAINESVILLE VA 20155
Orchard Corners,9672 Quivera Road,Lenexa KS 66215

Good to see that Gamestop still doesn't know how to spell Quivira.

I'll check that out tomorrow if I have time though, thanks blackbeard.

You have no interests but you would pick one up for nostalgia although you have the original…

This made me LOL.

[/QUOTE]Typical a-hole answer.

There's a difference between one having a strong interest in something and having a curiosity. I suppose for you - having an interest must be the equivalent of an obsession. I'm sad to see you can't make such distinctions.

When I'm genuinely interested in something, I'll go well out of my way for it. Case in point - when I wanted Skyward Sword's LE, and drove to a store very far to get it day one. I'm not interested in the NES Classic at any level close to that. It's more of a, "Well, it would be convenient to have an easy option to play these games, most of which I already have in some form." Don't mistake my frustration with me really wanting one. I'm speaking more for some of my younger friends who I'd love to see get one to play; they never grew up on Nintendo, and I think it would be great for them to experience these games -- of course, they, like me, will never go out of their way to find one. It'd be nice to be able to recommend this to them (vs. a $300 Switch with no suggestion of a virtual console), but well - as evidenced by Nintendo's willingness to let scalpers slaughter its users, it's clear the Hostile-N is happy to run its company like a s&^%show. Hard to recommend anything from a company like that.

As I ended my last post, I say to you - Stop. Being. A dick.

Calling people names really detracts on your argument. He called you out because your comments come off as oxymoronic.

It doesn't really concern me that they are halting distribution in April or May. We're only two months out from the giant Christmas rush for NES classics. It's still only mid-Feb. They keep popping up in new places every week and most of the resourceful people that wanted one have scored by now. Aftermarket prices have dropped to $120 and it will continue to fall. The supply is close to reaching the demand. Once the price drops below $100 scalpers won't be buying them anymore and they'll be even more easily available.

It's just how we always thought it would happen. Come March everyone will have their NES mini if they want one. It was up on the Best Buy site forever that one day last week. I'm glad to hear they won't be stinking up the store shelves and going on clearance. No doubt we'll be getting some future iterations of this product as well since it did so well. Truly a win-win. It's fun to have a little hype every now and then.
Wow, is that true? For some reason I thought it was live on BB for a matter of minutes.

The whole Nordic thing is a distributor saying this. Which means well nothing. The device was probably originally supposed to stop production by soon anyhow. So who knows what data this is really based off. Seeing that the president of of Nintendo said less than a month ago that production is slower than intended and that there are plenty to come, I would put this rumor to bed.

As far retropi vs Nes classic there is no doubt that you can get more on a retropi device than the nes classic. But the non moddified nes classic just works and works really well. No messing around with settings etc not to mention the whole other part about at the end of the day 99.9% of people using retropi are playing pirates games.

This is the only GS store that shows it has stock of the Original Nintendo NES Classic controller:

Wolfchase,2760 N GERMANTOWN PKWY STE 222 SPC 2260,MEMPHIS TN 38133

Well now, if they keep tweaking these hacks, the NES classic will become one of the cheaper alternatives to a retro box. Doesn't seem perfect yet to flash your system with due to system limitations and framerate issues here and there, but I'd be very interested in modding my system to play both NES and SNES games if they refine it.

Is that literally the only controller in GS system? I'm still holding out for getting a 2nd official controller, but now thinking maybe I'll just get a 2nd system to keep for future use (maybe mods) and get a 2nd controller that way.

yea those haven't come back in stock anywhere since they released. I ended up selling a system for a lil cheaper and kept the extra controller.

I see a buy it now listing on ebay for 44 which isn't horrible (they were going for 70+ at one point) if you needed it asap. I don't see too many other buy it now listings for it.

edit:

and right after I posted this the controllers came in stock at walmart. go figure

gave in and bought one off ebay yesterday for $50 extra from fear that the rumors were true. it is what it is. first time ive ever overpaid for something from nintendo. usually i can get their rare items. :/
Still could go either way (Nintendo has told us lies before) but at least now you don't have to worry/hunt one down :)

The Vita's effective discontinuation in the west has been through retailer leaks like that. Though in that case there was no official Sony response.
Well to be fair. They werent really flying off the shelves and retailers wanted the space for other things.

Yeah, the Walmart one today lasted like 10 seconds. I bought a cheap Bluetooth one that works ok though I guess. Maybe a slight delay from the original corded controller. I haven't used either that much after I just got my nes classic on Friday when Best Buy had them to order last week.

Yeah. Then he claimed he ended up selling it for $200 on Amazon. Bullshit

Bullshit indeed. Looks like he decided to try Craigslist, with the same price HAHAHA- https://southbend.craigslist.org/vgm/6003767974.html

Yes that is the only one showing in their system and it is more than likely a inventory error and not supposed to be there.

What is the best 3rd party compatible controller to get?
I wanted a Nintendo branded one but I'm not paying over retail so doesn't seem I will be owning one.
The best wired controller is the Edge Gamepad. Its not listed under that name at Amazon, but it's right here....

https://www.amazon.com/Controller-Classic-Buttons-Console-Nintendo-Gaming/dp/B01N1VABAH/ref=sr_1_11?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1487169912&sr=1-11&keywords=NES+classic

I ordered 2 of them, and 2 of the Edge Gamepad arrived.

I saw an Edge Gamepad at Walmart the other day but as is typical absolutely no employee to be found to get it out the case.

Edit: Checked BS. Found 2 in stock at the Walmart nearest my job. Swung by and bought both lol. $14.88 in store.

Well, at least I know you didn't vote for Trump.

That said, come on, get with the program. We live in a new era. Name calling wins presidencies.

Back to topic - can't believe these are STILL hard to get. I wonder if that's why Nintendo decided to conveniently leave out the Virtual Console from the Switch.

No means no. No interests means NO INTERESTS. anyway I've been called worse.

So over the weekend I made the Hakchi2.13 dive to see how it fared playing SNES games and my god is it glorious. It played every game I threw at it and my little NESC has about 200 games on it now including Earthbound, Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger, Link to the Past, Zombies ate my Neighbors; it's like rediscovering my childhood in a tiny box. :D

As a heads up, if you're using an 8bitdo nes30 the D-pad doesn't work with SNES games right after flashing but there is a fix. While in a game, hit select+start to open RetroArch, then navigate to the controller settings using the OEM controller that comes with the NESC in port 2. Find the D-pad binds/keymapping for each direction and rebind them using the D-pad on the 8bitdo. After that it works flawlessly and is a one-time fix.

One thing I am struggling to find an answer for is how to get save states working for SNES games as they should be according to the release notes (N64 does not however). People claim having too many SNES games or having commas/special characters in the title name is the issue so I'm not sure. Anyone else that has done this have advice?

I haven't flashed to 2.13 yet as still kinda unsure about how to add those cores as I haven't seen an up to date YouTube video from anyone on gbatemp forum.

Check out Syndrome208 on YouTube. He gives pretty explicit instructions and provides links. I have one classic with 405 NES games and another with 208 NES, SNES, genesis and game boy games. The games save with no problem and the Wii Classic controller works for all the games.

I can't wait to finally get a hold of the NES classic. I grew up during the NES days and would love to revisit many of these titles. Unfortunately I get laughed at every time I ask a retail employee if there are any upcoming restocks.

Core installation is very simple: RetroArch details which core is which, so simply copy the .hmod file for the system(s) you want to use into the user_mods folder and that will cause them to show up in hakchi as a checkbox when you go to install them. I typically install them just before building the kernel with all the games so I don't forget. Granted, even if you do forget, all that will happen is the games will fail to load. I'd also make sure to configure the auto-fire settings so that X/Y are not defaulted on if you plan to use SNES games. Lastly, SNES games can be left in zip files as long as you allow compression where possible from settings (default on). The NESC will extract them at game boot and commit them to RAM only, so you can keep the storage size low as a bonus for more roms.

Saw a bunch of NESC's a couple weeks back in the Philippines... they were in almost every electronics store. Not sure why I didn't bring one back. Eh.. oh well..

FYI, found a person that appears to be going through the NES library to make custom box art images that look really slick in the menus. They're only up to 'C' so far but looks like they just started a few days ago. Looking forward to filling my NESC with them. :)

Anytime I see anything referencing Contra I get all nostalgic.

It had the greatest game code of all time. If you can't agree with this then we can't be friends.

The hackchi gives you the ability to assign game cases to all of the games via google. You select and it pull box art for each and gives you options.

Oh I know, but it chooses the first result to fill for the art, which 90% of the time is correct and you just have to fix the other 10%. For me, I wanted to step it up and have fancier art boxes the next time I flash it. I also had a derp moment and didn't realize the blog posting those images were from exactly one year ago, so they never finished. :(

On the bright side, I found out they were just pretty much ripping off this website so I was able to get both NES and SNES box art off there.

Guessing Switch production killed more of these in the wild but as a heads up to any modders, there's a new version of Hakchi that flashes your roms in minutes or less. Makes the pain of having to spend half an hour hacking your system to try new games completely obsolete. :)
