Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

I tend to like the more 'slice of life" Ghibli movies over a lot of the fantasy movies, but they're still intermixed on my list.  I'll just copy/paste my full favorites list I recently posted on another forum:

1. When Marnie was There
2. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
3. Princess Mononoke
4. Howl's Moving Castle
5. Only Yesterday
6. From Up on Poppy Hill
7. Grave of the Fireflies
8. Porco Rosso
9. The Secret World of Arrietty
10. Laputa: Castle in the Sky
11. The Wind Rises
12. Whisper of the Heart
13. Tales From Earthsea
14. Ocean Waves
15. Spirited Away
16. Kiki's Delivery Service
17. The Tale of Princess Kaguya
18. The Castle of Cagliostro
19. The Cat Returns
20. My Neighbor Totoro
21. Pom Poko
22. My Neighbors the Yamadas
23. Ponyo

The one oddity people may notice is how far down the list I rate Spirited Away and Totoro, their two biggest hits.

If I were recommend the top titles for someone new to Studio Ghibli movies, then I'd say to try some of the Hayao Miyazaki fantasy titles first:

Spirited Away
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Princess Mononoke
Howls Moving Castle
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro

Cool, I have Nausicaa, so I'll watch that at some point.

Also, this last episode of Beatless? W-T-F. All I can say. Most worthless episode of an anime I've seen in a while.

Nah. That is still Black Clover for me.

At least in Beatless, I got to look at Androids be Models. Definitely feel like this show is going to have a sad ending

All right guys give to me straight. We are a few weeks into this season so what new shows should I be watching?

I'm only caught up with Overlord, Yowapeda & March Lion. And I watched the first episode of the new Cardcaptor Sakura and Karakai no Jouzu Takagi-san (which I will shorten to Takagi-san from now on) My daughter liked Cardcaptor Sakura so we're going back and watching the first series. Takagi-san was cute. It reminds me of Tonari no Seki kun a lot. Just kids goofing off in school.

The ones I'm watching are:

Violet Everdeen

Grancrest Senki

Killing Bites

Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san

Gakuen Babysitters

Death March

I still need to watch Koi wa Ameagari no You ni.

I do recommend Violet Everdeen, Killing Bites, Takagi-san, and Gakuen Babysitters.

I don't have recommendations, but there are some shows I plan on checking out this season.

Gancrest War
Darling in the FranXX
Killing Bites (Not sure how long Werehoneybadger can keep my interest)
Death March
Ms Koizumi
And (now that I've found it) Beatless

As an aside, it was a gigantic pain the ass to try and find Beatless. Every site said it was on Amazon, but it never showed up when I searched with the Amazon Video app, or with my phone. I finally stumbled into some random forum post saying that it only shows up when you search the site in just the Amazon Video section.

Darling in thr Franxx cuz Trigger. Personally waiting for the Gridman anime to come out in the Fall. Huge fan of Superhuman samurai Syber Squad.

Its not about the Werebadger. Its about the Werecheetah for me

Looking for Anime on Amazon Instant is just stupid. Wish they just make a section dedicated for it

Haha, I've been kind of wandering what everyone else thought too. I watched Card Captor Sakura after getting thumbs up from the deals thread when it was on sale for $100 a few years back for the entire blu-ray set. Really liked the show and the continuation seems to be good too.

In terms of what I have been watching and like so far:

* A Place Further than the Universe

* Overlord II (biased cuz of 1)

* Citrus (this has been good so far, wouldn't let your daughter watch it tho haha)

* Kokkoku

* Violet Evergarden (also pretty good so far)

* Seven Deadly Sins (yay it's back!)

* Hitori no Shita The Outcast (I generally dislike Chinese-made anime, but this one is solid, continuation of last season)

Things I'm watching that I'm enjoying, but unsure of:

* Maerchen Maedchen (fan service may override the story, making it a garbage show)

* Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (has nothing to do with ramen...stupid title)

* Record of Gancrest War (this feels really derivative so far...)

* The Ryuo's Work is Never Done (entertaining so far, but I can see this one going off the rails)

* Darling in the Franxx

Things on the drop list:

* Beatless (the last episode was utter garbage)

I'm getting bored of Yowamushi Pedal honestly. Kind of just feels like the same old shit. Very much looking forward to the new Fate series end of Jan. Surprised we're getting this constant influx of Fate anime! Grand Order must be making them so much gd money that they finally feel like doing more anime.

Thanks guys. I will check some of  those out probably tonight. Go down the list and give them the good ol' 1 episode trial. I hope a couple of them stick. Besides returning shows I'm not familiar with any of the new stuff season

I also need to do some major catching up with Black Clover and Ancient Magus Bride. How have those two been so far?

And I just realized there's 2 shows with Ramen in their title. I kinda got them mixed up.

Ancient Magus Bride is good. Easy to watch and enjoy. Black Clover is entertaining, but the MC is annoying as hell.

Oh! Is there a second season for Hitori no Shita? That show seemed to get a lot of hate but it was one of my favorites for the season it aired, and I was hoping we would get a continuation of the story. Awesome!

Maybe we will get a Blu-ray release for this series after all...

Started watching Re: Zero again cuz I managed to snag some blu-rays. I'm reminded how brutal his "adventures" are....feel so bad for him. Still an amazing show though, trying not to marathon it lol

Waiting for Darling in the Franxx to turn out to be a super fkd up anime. lol.

When Ichigo should've let Zero Two be Hiro's partner.

Well, that's why it's on my list of potentials to go sideways. The default premise is a guy and girl in doggie style using a mech. Yeah. Nothing can go wrong there.

Woah, this last episode of Ryuo was a little creepy, but given that no one else seemed to freak out in the show, perhaps this isn't unheard of in Japanese culture. Still an interesting show though.

More sexualized piloting than Code Geass.

Maybe chill first half and then amp it like Gurren Lagann.

Calling it now. True Antagonist is Papa and his people.

Excited for Hiro to kick #666's ass in the later episodes just so he can shut up about himself being superior.

Hah probably right on all counts. Has a bit of Chrome-Shelled Regios going with the setting, but let's see if they can execute as well.

I bet Hiro is the bottom

Or maybe Streliza is some special Franxx that has pilot side by side with a complete mind sync just like Pacific Rim. A significant advancement compared to the other Franxxs

Man, Re:Zero is sooooooooo good. Did the print media this is based off of finish? Is there enough for them to do another season? I know they announced some OVAs, but I'm hoping they do another season of this goodness. I think someone (probably Olengie) mentioned that shit hits the fan again after the end of the series. Would love to see this one to it's end. They rarely complete an anime when the print media completes except in rare instances.

the books are still going.

I think they only did through book 5 or 6 (maybe as much as 7 or 8) so... there might be a bit left to work with :p

There is more than enough material for another season. Depends though.

More shit happens after the show ended.

Same goes for Highschool DxD.

I mean highschool dxd has a new season coming in april... so that isn't an amazing example :p

https://myanimelist.net/anime/34281/High_School_DxD_Hero
It's on Season 4 and it still hasn't even reached the middle point yet of the Light Novels. lol. Hopefully this season reaches the one thing I want animated but I ain't counting on it.

When I was talking about High School DxD, I was referring to the fact that there is more than enough material to make multiple seasons, like with Re:Zero

I think Death March is going to be the first to get cast aside. There's far too many untranslated "UI" popup messages. Even if I knew what they said, it's distracting and annoying.
Plus, the show spent the entire first episode introducing me to Kiri... uh whatever his name is and explaining to me just how awesome he is now.

You could have at least shown me one more character with a face and a name before the last 30 seconds of the show.

So Crunchyroll is doing it's anime awards thing again this year (www.theanimeawards.com). There are some noticeable absences from some of these categories. Going to list them out with my thoughts. Curious to see what others think. There are definitely some difficult ones to pick from, but what makes it honestly really difficult is the overall lack of variety in the picks. I find myself browsing what came out that year to remind myself so that I don't leave something out that deserves it. I'll show what they have as options and then what I picked including whether I did a write in nominee. Anyway, with that being said, here I go:

Anime of the Year: March Lion, Made in Abyss, Land of the Lustrous (just noticed their art spells it "Lustruous" which is totally wrong), My Hero Academia (S2), Rakugo, Little Witch Academia. My pick is Made in Abyss. Little Witch Academia was definitely very good, but Made in Abyss was just ridiculous. Welcome to the Ballroom is also very good. While I also personally loved Classroom of the Elite, RE:CREATORS, and Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul, I feel like Made in the Abyss is a cut above.

Best Action: My Hero Academia (S2), Land of the Lustrous, Blood Blockade Battlefront, MSG: IBO S2, AoT S2, and Fate/Apocrypha. Honestly this category I'm completely torn. MHA had some great action, IBO S2 as well, AoT had some great moments and Fate/Apocrypha is almost non-stop action. RE:CREATORS next best attribute after it's music was definitely the action. Voting isn't open yet, but I'd probably write in RE:CREATORS because the concept of various universes colliding in battle is just amazing and I loved it.

Best Animation: Land of the Lustrous, My Hero Academia, Little Witch Academia, March Lion (whut?), A Silent Voice and Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Honestly, I'm rarely aware of "great animation", but definitely notice shitty animation. I put Land of the Lustrous firmly into the CGI category, so I feel awkward voting it in here. No idea what to put here and would welcome some thoughts. I know RE:CREATORS was awesome and cool and MHA had some great scenes, but I don't feel strongly about it.

Best CGI: Land of the Lustrous. I'm just going to stop there. I don't see how anyone else can win.

Best Comedy: Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Mr. Osomatsu (S2), Little Witch Academia, Konosuba S2, Gamers!, Tsuredure Children. For me this is easily Konosuba S2. That show had me laughing non-stop. Gamers! was definitely enjoyable comedy, but nothing beats Konosuba for me this year.

Best Continuing Series: March Lion, MSG: IBO S2, Dragon Ball Super, Case Closed, All Out!! (whut), Naruto: Shippuden. I think you can guess my pick, DB Super. Didn't even have to think about it. I will give March Lion credit for having a much better S2 than S1.

Best Drama: Rakugo, March Lion, Made in Abyss, Ancient Magus' Bridge, Scum's Wish, Acca: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. My pick is Made in Abyss here. Rakugo was good and AMB is too, but Made in Abyss is just amazing. Made in Abyss got my emotions going to an extent the others did not.

Best Boy: Shoto Todoroki, Rei Kiriyama, Kazuma, Izuku "Deku" Midoriya, Fafnir (kobayashi), Yakumo Yuurakutei (Bon). This is kind of a weird category. Since I can't figure out how to give props to Welcome to the Ballroom anywhere, I'm going to do it here with Fujita Tatara. Welcome ideas/thoughts.

Best Girl: Atsuko "Akko" Kagari, Ochako Uraraka, Moriko Morioka, Serval, Tsuyu Asui, Chise Hatori. This is another hard category for me. Any of the Konosuba females could make this, Nina from Rage of Bahamut, a few of the RE:CREATORS cast, Fate/Apocrypha, just too many. I'll probably go with Akko because I really enjoyed that character a lot.

Best Film: A Silent Voice, Your Name, In this Corner of the World, Girls und Panzer der Film, Kizumonogatari 3, Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel 1. First I'll state the obvious answer, Your Name. Next I'll state my protest choice, particularly over Girls und Panzer, which is Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale. My 2nd protest choice would be NGNL: Zero. While the Fate/Stay Night movie was very cool, it treaded familiar ground, so it doesn't feel like it's really "new". I kind of wish this category was split into "Stand Alone Film" and "Film based on a series". Since films based on a series are usually garbage/re-hashes, it's nice to see ones that are legitimately good. I will probably write in SAO: Ordinal Scale as a protest vote since it was a surprisingly good film with original content that continued the SAO universe.

Best Manga: Golden Kamui, My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness (whut!), My Brother's Husband (wtf?), In This Corner of the World, Rakugo, and Delicious in Dungeon. I'll preface this by saying I'm not a big manga reader. I read Skip Beat!, Fairy Tail (ended), and Boruto. That's it. Oh and Fuuka on CR when I remember to. I kind of want to give Rakugo it's props by picking it here. If I was being realistic, I'd probably write in Fairy Tail since I actually read it.

Best Opening: Acca - "Shadow and Truth", AMB - "Here", AoT - "Shinzou wo Sasageyo!", MHA - "Peace Sign", Princpss Principal - "The Other Side of the Wall", Rakugo - "Imawa no Shinigami". I definitely scratch my head at these selections. Peace Sign is certainly good, but you cannot beat Sawano Hiroyuki's OPs for RE:CREATORS. They win hands down.

Best Ending: Blood Blockade - "Step up Love", Kobayashi - "Ishukan Communication", Land of the Lustrous - "Kirameku Hamabe", MMO Junkie - "Hikari, Hikari", Just Because! - "Behind", and March Lion - "Kafune". Another ignored anime, Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul, has two of the best endings this year by DAOKO. I couldn't find anything close to either of those, but there are certainly a lot I enjoyed like Food Wars ED.

Best Score: Made in Abyss, Little Witch Academia, Land of the Lustrous, Ancient Magus' Bride, Acca, RE:CREATORS. RE:CREATORS hands down. Made in Abyss definitely has a nice score, but RE:CREATORS score is so in your face and good, I can't think of a better pick.

Best Slice of Life: MMO Junkie, Tsukigakirei, Girl's Last Tour, Kemono Friends, Sakura Quest, Interviews with Monster Girls. I think here I'm going with Tsukigakirei since it's the first romantic anime/slice of life I've seen that actually correlates to real life the most.

Best Hero: Izuku "Deku" Midoriya, Gin Minowa, Atsuko "Akko" Kagari, Kukuri, Chise Hatori, Nanachi. I think here I finally give MHA it's due and pick Deku. It is My HERO Academia after all.

Best Villain: Stain, Tanya Degurechaff, Bondrewd, Cartaphilus, Hiro Shishigami, Usagi. Honestly their picks suck. Stain, Tanya, ok those are good. The rest? Pfft. Too bad I can't pick Aizen from Bleach. He's one of the best villains I've ever seen. I'll be writing in Altair from RE:CREATORS I think. She has depth, a reason to kick everyone's ass, and generally does kick everyone's ass. Stain is a little too short-lived as a villain for me to pick him, but he's good. Another nice option would be the Lunarians from Land of the Lustrous. They aren't a singular entity (that we're aware of), but are kind of this mysterious foe throughout the series.

I never watched that one, but Gigguk also gave it a shout out in his video.
I watched the first episode...

it was super super boring so I moved onto land of the lustrous instead as I only have a few days to get in some watches for anime of the year voting on my other forum :p

I guess I need to watch Land of the Lustrous. Were can I see this? It's the only nominee for AOTY I haven't seen.

I placed some votes on CR. For AOTY I voted for Rakugo. The entire show was amazing spanning across almost 100 years. From top to bottom just brilliant. My Hero Academia comes close, but I want to act like I'm a bit more cultured and go with Rakugo.

Yeah, Rakugo is a good pick. I could give it a nomination over Made in Abyss for drama of the year, I just had an issue with pacing and how the two seasons fit together I guess you could say.

I'm 3 episodes into Land of the Lustrous. Wow this show is super pretty. 3D anime done right. I was thinking about showing it to my daughter but the story & themes might be a bit over her head and it's a little creepy at times. Other than that it's a good show, but I did't get an AOTY vibe yet. I'll probably finish this in a few days.

Now that I opened up an Amazon Prime are there any shows I should check out. I saw Made in Abyss already but any other recommendations would be most welcomed.

Yeah Amazon Prime picked up a lot of good shows. RE:CREATORS, Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul, Made in Abyss, Welcome to the Ballroom, Sword Oratoria (if you liked picking up girls in a dungeon and want to watch more in that universe), and Inuyashiki Last Hero. Inuyashiki kind of fell flat near the end, like they wanted to wrap it up too quickly (IMO), but it has some really stand out episodes. Pretty dark show generally though.

I enjoyed Re:Creators and Princess Principal.

Land of the Lustrous is probably my AOTY personally. I just really liked how different it is.

RE:CREATORS, Princess Principal & Welcome to the Ballroom are three I'm putting in my que. Thanks for the recommendations guys. I did watch 1 episode of RE:CREATORS and I liked it, I just never got back to it.

This season doesn't have too many shows I'm into so I want to go back and watch some stuff that slipped through the cracks. Also I've been playing a ton of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 so that's been sucking away my free time as well.

Just finished watching Land of the Lustrous thanks to the talk here about the show. It's the first time in awhile that I burned through an entire season of a show in a couple of sittings.

I thought it was very good, but having not read the manga I would have liked it to be a bit more focused. There seemed to be the start to a lot of storylines that they just sort of walked away from to try and get it all in.

Yeah....that's how I felt. No closure leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth

Don't really have an "Anime of the Year" for 2017 since I was so busy. So I have a lot of catching up.

Ordinal Scale is a great movie imo. Got a lot of done. I've seen all those movies cept the No Game No Life.

no game no life didn't get a home release anywhere in 2017 so it will be eligible in 2018 as well.

I just liked the series enough that when it had a theater run I went and saw it :p
