Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Thinking about getting a new tablet for work trips, e-reader, offline movies, etc. and wondering what folks here would recommend. The iPad Mini 4 for $300 at BB seems like a good price, but I really hate managing content through iTunes and don't use a Macbook etc. Surprisingly, Apple has the lower cost/quality ratio than Samsung's Android tablets, at least from what I'm seeing currently.
My wife has an iPad Mini and loves it. Uses it mainly for browsing and digital journaling. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab that I've been using for the last 3-4 years and it works great for me- browsing and watching media. I prefer the longer display to the shorter but wider one on the Mini

The only downside to these holidays for me are that people drive 50% worse (and they already drove like shit to begin with).

48gb patch?...
Even after it tanks in price i may not buy now.
There are patch notes now. Seems fairly light on text for 48 gigs, but "general performance and stabilization" could mean literally anything and everything. I saw someone say this patch was said to be much bigger than normal because of the stabilization stuff, but I don't see that anywhere official. On PC it was 15 gigs.

I Use to work at Toys R Us for a longer period than one should tolerate and God, after every Halloween they would start the Christmas music. It's how I grew to just despise Mariah Carey and have Christmas season PTSD for the longest time until like two or three years later after quitting I finally got over it.
I learned to just completely tune out the music over the years. The worst thing about it at TRU those last few years was the Christmas music was pretty much the same every year. I think they only changed out a couple songs, if any. In general I kind of like Christmas music when it's not the same 10 songs being looped. I think my holiday mood is going to be pretty different this year being at a local game store instead of a chain retail place.

not ALL holiday music is bad (only like 99.99% of it)

I just remembered one of my favorite gaming mashups, this '8bit Jesus' album with NES themes turned into Xmas songs. What's really cool about it is they maintain the aesthetic of each game, but are clearly a Christmas song now. A few favorites:

Carol of the Belmonts:

Don't forget one of the truly great Christmas albums

That’s why I wear headphones when I’m shopping, especially if I’m not with my friends. You can only hear Rudolf so many times before you want to tear your ears off.

The only downside to these holidays for me are that people drive 50% worse (and they already drove like shit to begin with).
Definitely. There was a crash outside of the mall I work in yesterday, and when I went to pick up some lunch we were back to people flooring it through a crowded parking lot. 6 weeks and it's over I guess.

Either last Black Friday or the one before, someone actually hit my car as I was parking to go in for the day. At least it wasn't damaged, but boy was that a bad start to the day.

Here is (IMO) a great interpretation of Silent Night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewhOmyH3RNA

The video is pretty sub-par but you get the music loud and clear.  There is almost nothing like witnessing this in person with the windows down and the radio up and letting it just wash over you.

Kick it off easy,

like this post for a chance to win the $5.00 Lego game of your choice!

on a side note

I fucking hate the holidays........ESPECIALLY thanksgiving and black friday :/
The older I get the more the holidays sneak up on me. If I didn't have to buy ingredients for green bean casserole I doubt I'd even remember it was Thanksgiving until someone turned the parade on Thursday morning.

Thanks for the contest!

Thanks for the feedback!

My biggest gripe with Apple is the lack of expandable storage, but the $300 Mini 4 has 128GB on it, which isn't too shabby. I want something easily portable so the Mini is also appealing.

I’ve got two Christmas albums that I play on repeat for a solid month and they never get old to me. I’ve got a few other favorites that make the playlist, but these are the only full albums I play every year.

Just left CVS. If you are a CVS Rewards member, you can get $15 in Rewards Bucks with a $50 Xbox Live gift card purchase in store this week until Thursday, 11/22. It didn't look like you could buy a Gold membership card to qualify for this deal. It has to be a Live card. And Rewards Bucks cannot be used to buy other gift cards, alcohol, cigarettes, lottery tickets, or anything else that's fun. But you can buy a lot of denture cream and Metamucil for $15. Don't ask how I know that!

My haul:

Costume Quest (360) - $2.24 (hoping for BC!)

Dishonored 2 - $13.20

Final Fantasy XIII (360) - $7.99

Middle Earth: Shadow of War + Expansion - $22.48

Ms. Pac Man - $1.00

Unravel Yarny Bundle - $15.00

About $62 + tax, I managed to only exceed my account balance by 35 cents. :)
Nicely done! I loved Costume Quest 1&2, they are making a Netflix series out of it that I hope lives up to the game.

My haul has been: Nier Automata, Unravel2, Lego Worlds, Evil Within2, and may grab wildlands yet..

While your wife loves the Mini, how does she really feel about longer vs. shorter and wider?

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all night. Please, try the veal!

Thanks as always for the giveaway, Pat. Hope this week goes fast, both for those (like you) who hate the holiday, and those (like me) working during it.

Are they usually on a two year cycle? I Think RTJ3 came out in January 2017 so you maybe right. In the very least give me a goddamn Meow the Jewels 2 (3?),
3 actually came out on Christmas Eve 2016, was a nice surprise. I think we're a bit out from an album, last thing I saw was in October they were working on one still, but you never know. I looked at Injustice 2 Legendary Edition on the Xbox Dashboard and the autovideo trailer was playing a song I haven't heard of that at the very least had Killer Mike on it. I need to look up what that is.

I Know they got a few tracks that never got an official album or single release. "Pew, Pew, Pew" and "Tougher Colder Killer" are the ones I can think of off hand and "Dynamite on the Streets" was released as a single, but never been on an album.

You might appreciate this one. I recommend the tracks "My first Christmas as a Woman" and "Nothing's Gonna Ruin My Holiday." Time stamps in description.

Another excellent source of Punk Xmas songs are the Kevin and Bean radio shows. Tough to find copies, but there's some crazy stuff in there.

That's weird. The ad specifically says Xbox 12 month subscription card. Fingers crossed it works for $50 gc when I try it tomorrow.

This is a nice story, but I guess I'm a little surprised to find out that layaway still exists. Can someone explain a rational reasoning behind using it?
If it has no interest (or low interest) it's cheaper than using a CC. Especially if it's an item you don't have the $s for right away. Also it allows you to get it at that sale price when you put it on layaway.

I've never used it..just know that some people still do. More than we probably realize.

According to the Gamestop ad, they'll have 2nd gen 4GB 360s for free after rebate, $70 out of pocket initially. Might be time to follow through on getting a spare system, although used systems from Gamestop can be not worth the time.

No TSO? I'm disappointed

I'm trying to find the YT video where the guy's house lights are in sync to the song but it's being elusive.

I've been to a TSO concert and I was overall disappointed. I like the two songs they have on the radio (Wizards in Winter & Christmas Eve Sarajevo), but the rest of the show wasn't that great. I recommend seeing the show once, but probably not more than that.

Another excellent source of Punk Xmas songs are the Kevin and Bean radio shows. Tough to find copies, but there's some crazy stuff in there.
Oh man, I haven’t listened to Kevin and Bean in like 10 years. Used to listen to them all the time in the morning on KROQ. The one song they had that I remember was a parody of Holiday In Cambodia called Holiday In Armenia.

As for the Christmas music, I prefer the traditional carols and hymns done in different styles. That’s why the Bad Religion album has been my favorite since it came out.

Wow, I'd love to replace the old fat X360 with a dead optical drive that I have downstairs with a slim for FAR. I may have to jump on this.

Anyone play Extinction? Got a few okay reviews and always looked kind of fun. It’s in the GameFly BF sale for $7.99.

That Vandals album has Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies and Here I Am Lord if you prefer classics over originals like Grandpa's Last Christmas and Hang Myself From the Tree.

I fucking hate the holidays........ESPECIALLY thanksgiving and black friday :/
I can’t stand the holidays too. I’ve been jaded about them since I worked retail at Target in the 90s. I think it gave me Holiday Related Stress Disorder.

I liken my changing feelings about the holidays to my changing feelings about Fall. As a kid, I hated the Fall season because it marked the beginning of the school year. When I was with Walmart, I hated the holidays. Now I love both. The weather is nice in the Fall, and the holidays generally mean the opposite of what they used to (more time out of the office). Even now i'm thinking back to getting a store ready for Black Friday. I was with the company in various levels/roles throughout undergrad/grad school, and those holidays were strong motivation to keep studying.

As a retail worker of 16+ years I can attest to this.We are also doing sales earlier and earlier every year usually by one hour each year. I am getting a nice paycheck though between overtime and bonuses. Also free food at work.

The good news is I don't have to go in till 5pm Thanksgiving/Brown Thursday is which I call it now so I can probably score the deals online before work.

This is my obligatory post to remind everyone to pick up the BC game STACKING if you've never played it before.

It's definitely in my top 10 of favorite Xbox arcade games.

If it has no interest (or low interest) it's cheaper than using a CC. Especially if it's an item you don't have the $s for right away. Also it allows you to get it at that sale price when you put it on layaway.

I've never used it..just know that some people still do. More than we probably realize.
This sums it up pretty well. Walmart layaway is free, unless you cancel (meaning no interest, etc). I work there and I’ve never used it, and I didn’t think it was a big deal until they brought it back and it’s been busier and busier every year since. There’s a lot of people that either have bad or no credit and/or just live on cash, so this helps out big time. And the Santa story is awesome.
