I have had drives from maxtor, WD, ibm, and seagate. And have only had 1 seagate go out on me (after 6 years of usage). I prefer Maxtor and WD and get what ever one has the best deal.
GS has the policy, I am not saying that they handled the situation as well as they could of. But they can only take 1 copy of each product per person per day (w/ the exception of accessories, as most people own multiple controllers/memory cards). I can say, not neccassarily in your istance...

Normally the head phone jack puts out some power (although not very much, as headphones do not require much), and a/v out (or your audio out) only sends signal requiring another device to amplify it to produce the sound. Now depending what speakers you have you may have an acceptable sound...
