2009-2010 College Basketball Thread

With West Virginia's win, we are guaranteed to see Duke in the Final Four, and I'd give it better than 50% odds that Duke wins the whole thing now.

The NCAA likes their ratings, and Baylor v. WVU, MSU/TEN v. Butler ain't gonna do it.

Based on last night's game, WVU has a lot to prove to me that they can win the championship... I don't think it is so cut and dry now. The Kentucky-WVU was the worst game I watched this season. For the reasons below...

1) Officiating - When I heard Jamie Luckie (ACC ref - I have to deal with him/staff during our games all season), I knew this would be bad. Granted though his staff is known for calling everything... this game it seemed nothing was called between Kentucky's blatant back court volation or WVU's constant illegal screens or Cousin's elbows.
2) WVU lack of Offense - give some credit to Kentucky but mostly WVU couldn't buy even open shots inside the 3 point line.
3) Coaching - Let's start with Kentucky - Cousins had Mazzola (smallest guy on the court) guarding him the majority of the game, yet Kentucky never exploited this mismatch... and when they did, he drop elbows into him. On top of that, they were fine with Patterson shooting threes... ya... terrible coaching. Now for WVU... I never understood why the team felt to drop the smallest guys to guards the bigs down low. For this game, it seemed to work because of the lack of Calabrini to exploit the mismatches.
4) This game was just plain awkard. WVU gets on fire from 3pt line (which isn't what they normally do) and UK goes ice cold from 3pt line.

It's all about advancing. Kentucky has the most NBA level talent on their team by far. Their inside presence is nasty. WVU had to win a different way and they did.

As you said Cousins had Mazzola on him quite a bit during the game. If Kentucky can't exploit that, they don't deserve to win. WVU sealed the deal in the last 5 or 6 minutes with what Kentucky was doing all game, offensive rebounds.

Whoever plays WVU in the Final Four game might present a challenge with either Zoubek or Udoh but I don't think it will be as tough as Kentucky.

Kentucky lost for one reason, and it's the reason why all Calipari teams lose in the NCAA Tournament

Free Throws. His teams cannot shoot free throws when the going gets tough, period. It happened with Massachusetts. It happened with Memphis. It happened again last night with Kentucky.

Also, what a poor shot by Tennessee at the end of that game. Just awful.

So the only reason why Kentucky lost is because of Free Throws? They went 4-31 from 3 Point land. 30 percent would have been 10-31 and thats an extra 18 points. Plus it would have changed the whole end of the game in terms of fouling WVU.

Lets go spartans.. what a intense close game yet again~~~ man i love my Michigan state !!! GO GREEN N WHITE ( = / 70-69 over Tennessee!

The final four is set.

Michigan St.-Butler in the early game, WVU-Duke in the late game.

It won't be easy, but I like WVU's chances.
Gotta root for Huggs. Still content that Cincy fired him so many years ago, but he's a deserving basketball coach.
It's hard for me to root for that fuck after what he did to K-State but at the same time his dick move gave us Frank Martin...

Was a dick movie to K-State for sure, but hard to fault a guy for going home to coach at his Alma Mater.

Shame the former WVU president botched hiring him away from Cincy in 2002.

I didn't realize Huggins was into gay porn. What was the title of his movie?;)

All kidding aside that is true, it would be awfully hard to turn down your dream job and in the long run everybody wins. Frank Martin is making K-State basketball relevant again, Huggins goes home, and West Virginia is on the verge of playing for the NCAA title.

We can hope Butler can defend the double/triple screens for wide open threes but based on tonights game against Mich St... I don't think they can, especially since Mack (one of their 2 main players) is questionable.

As much as I hate Duke, I still have to give it up for them for showing our conference in a good light since all the analysts downed our conference all year long.
Um...Butler is David, Duke would be Goliath.

So Broly was saying there's no way Butler wins.
I believe that these teams are very even given all factors. The Butler heavy crowd may go a very long way in determining this game. If Butler gets on a roll early, it could be a long night for Duke, which I hope is the case. Laettner + Duke = The Devil

Oh I agree. I was just pointing out that he misread Broly's post.

Butler definitely has a chance. I think Duke's size will be too much for them, but they have a chance.

I don't think the crowd will be a huge factor, it was pretty quite during the Butler-MSU game. Stadiums are just so big it's hard to get loud for basketball with the court in the middle and people sitting so far away etc.

I think it all depends on Mack's status. When he was off the court, Butler became real stagnant on offense.

He was dehydrated so there's no reason why he won't be on the court Monday

I'll be rooting for Butler tonight, but all I really want is a solid game. Hopefully it will come down to the last few possesions.

People doing the David v Goliath comparisons have to realize that this is a Butler team that beat Syracuse and K-State. I had no clue what to expect from them in the beginning of the tourney but I think they have performed really well to this point and hopefully they continue to suprise tonight.

Duke with a 1 point lead with 50 seconds to go and the ball.

Butler down 1 with the ball and 14 seconds left to go.

Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That ball almost went in. Are you kidding me. Fudgee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. That would have been a hell of a finish.

That was too good of a game to end like that (Duke winning) :wall:. That could have been the new shot they show every year at the begining of the tournament. I guess we will see the fucking Laettner shot again next year.
fuck Duke! Hayward seems to always be going 100% and that buzzer shot would have been awesome
Have to feel bad for Hayward. 2 of his shots in the final 5 seconds were in and out.
What a end to the tourney! Had that went in it would have been one of the best moments of the tourney all time easily.
It would have surpassed Doug Floutie, Christian Laettner, Stanford Band endzone. It would have been the greatest finish to any College sports game ever. I still feel so f'ing cheated half an hour later and I could care less about Duke or Butler.

At least Duke's win is going to be one of the least exciting sports news stories, and it'll replace the Cinderella story we've been bombarded with.

Duke haters

What a game to end the season! Exciting conclusion.

For our conference to be quote on quote bad this year (as stated by countless ESPN and CBS analysts), our conference winner won the whole thing. And on top of that one of our bottom feeders (UNC) made the Championship game in the NIT. I guess the ACC wasn't that bad.

Great game, I still feel that a couple of calls should have gone Butler's way and instead of Duke with a 2 pt win, Butler might have a 2 pt win.

Talking about Scheyer taking the charge (wasn't a charge) instead of the and 1, the Lance Thomas armbar on Hayward should've been a flagrant, and Matt Howard should've had two fouls at the most. There were a couple other calls I can't think of at the moment. Still a great game and would've been even better with that halfcourt shot going in.
