2010 MMA Gaming Preview Thread - UFC Undisputed: 2010 and EA Sports MMA

Well, the closest store that is doing the tournament is about 5 minutes away, so I might have to look into it. Glad Nate posted that link.
Just saw on Gamestop's site that stores are having an "Ultimate Fighter Tournament" on June 5th. Unfortunately, the closest store to me that is doing it is 2 hours away. They've got some pretty cool prizes though, including UFC gear and even a replica championship belt (how lame is it that I want one? lol)

Crap it had to be June 5?! That's my first cousin's wedding day. Stupid Gamestop always doing their tournaments 2 weeks after release instead of the same week.
Confirmed.
http://www.pastapadre.com/2010/05/19/confirmed-ufc-2010-requires-code-for-online-play
And again, I don't mind it if it means online play is flawless right out of the gate. If it's not, you could probably wait a month or two, buy it used, pay the XBL points to unlock online play, and still come out ahead. I get that developers don't want people buying used, but I'd much rather they give me a reason to own it right away than just hold online play hostage. This is pretty much the last sports game I have any faith in (the online problems MLB The Show and EA's NHL series have had for 2 years will keep me from pre-ordering them next year...and word is that NHL 11 will have a code for online also). With all the additions Undisputed has this year, it would be nice to see somebody get it right.

With this news I am second guessing my preorder. I may just wait until it eventually drops in price or skip it all together.
With this news I am second guessing my preorder. I may just wait until it eventually drops in price or skip it all together.
But if you were going to pre-order, you'd get a code anyway, lol. Unless you're just counting on the online not being any good, I don't follow your logic. I don't even think you can look at it as a strike against this game. Madden and NCAA have codes for online now. Rock Band and Guitar Hero have codes to export songs AND a fee. Resident Evil 5 held back versus mode so they could charge for it There's probably even more that I'm just not thinking of. It's just the way the industry is going.

I'm getting it because I'm a huge MMA fan, and like I said, this is the last sports game that I'm giving blind faith to. As long as it's actually worth $60, I see no problem here. But doing these things makes online seem like some premium service (on top of what we already pay for XBL). If it turns out to be laggy or gimped in any way, I'll have a big problem with it.

I realize that. I just have more issues with the new policy and I don't know if I want to support a company choosing to do this. It doesn't help that I already had an issue due to exclusive content based off console and preorder location. I realize this is par for the course these days, mainly on consoles, but it bothers me more and more.

Oh, I totally hear you on that, man. I'm not really a fan of this business model either. But when it's more than just THQ doing it (hell, they weren't even the ones to start it), I feel like all I'd be doing is punishing myself by missing out on a great game. Ultimately, I feel like we as consumers just have to vote with our dollars and only buy the games when they are worth it...at least that's the policy I'm going to be employing with The Show and NHL. The Show is in the process of releasing it's 3rd patch in about 2.5 months since the game launched, still trying to get things to work properly.

That's the kind of stuff I can't support anymore. Unfinished games that use patches as a crutch. If I had waited to buy the game until now, I could have saved $30 by buying it used. And that's just too bad, so sad for the developer. When they release a glitchy, unfinished product, that's what they deserve. I'm just reeeeeally hoping this won't be the case for Undisputed. If they do it because the game is truly worth buying brand new, then good for them. If the online sucks and it's just a money grab, well, they'll lose a supporter.

I completely support this policy and always have. It gives more money to the people who deserve it rather than Gamestop, and if you buy it used, you'd pay no more than the price that people would pay for it new.

I don't understand why people buy recently released games used, anyway. If you're saving a lot, I get that. But anyone who pays Gamestop $55 for a used game when a new copy costs $60 is retarded.
I don't understand why people buy recently released games used, anyway. If you're saving a lot, I get that. But anyone who pays Gamestop $55 for a used game when a new copy costs $60 is retarded.
Well yeah, anybody who pays $54.99 + tax in a store is an idiot. But GS.com lowered the "starting point" for most recent releases to $49.99. Couple that with a 25% off coupon that they've been having regularly lately and 10% edge and you make out like a bandit. The whole point is, if developers made these games to their full potential, you wouldn't have as many people trading them in within the first month of release, and therefore they would be hard to find used. Not to mention people would feel better about paying $60 for a really great game to begin with. Based on the quality and effort THQ put into last year's UFC game (especially considering it was their first MMA game), they've earned my trust for this year's game.

After having worked with them and seeing it first hand, you'd be suprised at how many people buy it used, to check it out for a week and then return it for something else with no hassle.

I forgot about that. I guess if you want what amounts to a free rental, that would be a great way to do it. Or, if it's a short game, you could play through the whole thing and get your money back.

Wow I'm surprised this guy is unlockable in UFC 2010:

just a random q about ufc 2010. I couldnt get my order in with gamestop so I ordered yesterday with amazon. Should have it today but i really want the gamestop dlc characters..

how much would you say the dlc is worth?

If i buy off ebay for $10, that isnt too much right? or anyone expect it will be on the marketplace right away? I could probably sell my amazon dlc for the same price :)

also kinda dissapointed about the review.. i had a feeling they would play it safe

I hear the online is very laggy and I seen Jay's review mentioned that lag was an occasional issue. Anyone else try out the online yet? If so how was it for you?

I went to my local midnight release; boy what a dud...5 people in line (I didn't get there till a little after 11pm) and the employees made us wait outside while they talked with each other.

What sucks is the gamestop exclusive fighters code won't redeem. I did find this, according to the THQ website.
UFC® 2010 Undisputed™ TUF Fighter Code redemption failure **UPDATE 5/25/2010 10AM PDT** We are aware of customers experiencing problems when trying to redeem their UFC® 2010 Undisputed™ TUF Fighter codes. You have our apologies for the inconvenience

It appears the problem has been localized. The TUF Fighter promotional code you received should be operational by this evening.

We appreciate your patience, and will provide updated information regarding this on the THQ Support website when it's available.

In the interim, updates can also be found at:
I hear the online is very laggy and I seen Jay's review mentioned that lag was an occasional issue. Anyone else try out the online yet? If so how was it for you?
Still waiting on my copy to get here. But most of the real reviews I've read have said online is basically the same as last year, and I hardly ever got lag in last year's game. I'd be surprised if it was any worse than that. Lag is such a hard thing to gauge when you're reading people's personal experiences because most have no clue how their router even works and can't seem to comprehend that you can't download porn and play video games at the same time.

Also, whoever wrote IGN's review is a moron. First, he goes into great detail explaining what MMA is, and then bitches about the controls being too complex, and that the tutorial is too "cumbersome". I'll never understand why people who don't understand a game review it. That's not to say I want a biased review, but things he's viewing as a negative, I view as a positive. In an MMA game, it's far better that the controls be complex than simplistic. If you're not naturally a fan of the sport, yeah, you probably won't take the time to learn all the moves...or even know when you should be doing them. But you can say the exact same thing about Madden or most any other sports game. If you don't know what you're doing, you're going to suck. I don't see how that's the game's fault.

I'm really pretty excited for UFC 2010, though I can't say I'm ready to pull the trigger on purchasing a new copy of it. Given that my backlog is about 10 games deep on the PS3, I think this game can wait a bit.

I'm hoping to get a copy off Goozex (currently 19th in line). It'd be great if the game came with an unused online code, but if it didn't, I'd be alright with paying the $10 or whatever it is to buy the content from THQ.

Just want to give everybody a heads up, the code to unlock online play is on the back of your manual. You should probably try redeeming it before you even start the game because if not, the game tells you that there is DLC available for update before you even reach the menu, and then takes you to the XBL store where it appears ready to use points to purchase the update. I thought I remembered a screen asking if you had a code, but I didn't see one and was all the way at the "Confirm Download" option and it showed the download costing 400 points. If you get this far, you have to press X (I think it's X anyway) to "Buy Microsoft Points", and then you can choose "Redeem Code", which will then let you put your code in. I did it this way, but it would seem like less hoops to jump through if you just did it before you even booted the game up.

I'd like to quote this sentiment for the Ultimate Fights sequences in the game featuring Arianny  If she were a president, she'd be Baberaham Lincoln.

Anyone else not being able to enter the Shaq/Tapout crew codes. It seems its a common problem, because the codes I have/other people have appear to be right, they just won't redeem. I did get the BJ Penn - Black Trunks code to go though. Pretty stupid addition for a "bonus" character if you ask me.

Can't say I disagree. Glad they didn't get rid of her, but still, why get the black chick (I forget her name) and get rid of the better looking other one?

Well, the TUF codes weren't working until about an hour ago, so maybe this is a similar problem. I'd imagine they'd get it sorted out soon. The server also seems to be kinda wonky today. I was looking at the CAG Camp earlier, and it was having to reconnect every time I backed out of a menu. I know some of that is by design (and a poor one), but it was taking way longer than it should have.

Well, the UFC decided not to renew Logan and Natasha's contracts supposedly because of what they said about Josh Koscheck looking like he was faking the eye injury against Anthony Johnson. But I've also read that Arianny was jealous of them, and wouldn't renew her contract unless they weren't brought back. Who knows what happened. It's possible that Arianny is a bitch...but fortunately that does not affect her hotness, haha.

I remember that, TMZ blogged about it and I think it was aired on that rawvegas.tv or whatever site. Just a couple of months after that, boom, Arianny was the lone chick standing, until the new one(s) came in.

Also to note for those with Blu-Ray players, the Best of UFC 2010 is $20 at Best Buy, probably $15 on DVD. If you buy UFC Undisputed at Best Buy, you can get $10 off, combined with the $20 off UFC PPV coupon offer.

If its like last year, it'll be on the Marketplace in August (and it was a free download when it came out in August last time, but that means nothing now.)

So N8, which online is worse, UFC or The Show?

Unless Madden or NBA 2K blows everyone out of the water, I'd say best sports game of the year is a 3-horse race between UFC, The Show, and NHL 11.

No. They cost money/points on the XBL marketplace and the PSN.

Man i am just absolutely horrible even at beginner difficulty. Made it to the title bout with Kimbo Slice in title mode and I could not beat Frank Mir if my life depended on it. I got submitted time after time again.

How do you escape submissions? Everytime it gets put on me, i tap. I know about the transition motion with the right stick, but i do that over and over and cant get the guy off me. Then he submits me and its over

Also, that sounds extremely realistic. Kimbo Slice wouldn't be able to escape a Frank Mir submission in a million years. Try using a better fighter.

Here are my questions video game gods since the UFC tutorials teaches you nothing:
*These issues are for playing online or against another human player*

1. If I'm taken down and in open guard what is the best way to get up? I spam minor transitions and I either a: Push the player off of me after the third attempt b:Never get up and the other player advance position.

2. Does the player on top have priority over commands? Does it matter what minor transition I use - ie I almost always use "down to right" (like a fire ball in SF). If I hold the right stick to block a players transition do I gain a split second window where I could use a minor transition to then push the player off me and get back to my feet?

3. Pretty much the same question as the question above but about the clinch game. Clinching just turns into consistently transitioning back in worth then randomly after 30 seconds of going back in forth someone throws the other player into side control (I understand how to perform the throw) If I hold the right stick to block a players transition do I gain a split second window where I could advance position? How do you gain a dominant clinch position and stay in it for more then 2 seconds?

To unlock Shaq, go to the main menu and press

Right, Up, Left, Right, Down, Left, Up, Right, Down, Left, X, Y, Y, X, Start.
When the code is entered correctly, a message will pop up on screen telling you have unlocked a new fighter. Then head into an Exhibition bout and you will find Shaq among the heavyweight contenders.

Tapout guys
down, down, up, down, left, down, select, start

Already beat ya to it for Shaq a page or so back. I guess I should do the Tapout guys next.

I feel as If I'm going to be the only one who is shitty this year cause I pretty much was done with it once Nate posted that video.

The online has improved yesterday since Nate and I fought. It sync and then bam. It was pretty smooth. Now as for the camp and what the hell your suppose to do. I have no clue. We had some HARD instructions when Nate and I tried it. Apparently Nate and Apathy got some tasks done how ever.

Event mode is just addictive. I love how there are Sub / KO / Fight of the Night highlights after the card is finished. I do find it odd that you play the undercard fights after the main event.

i think the ppvs are like that as well.. i always notice fights after the main event

But yet they got the presentation of the events down.. the gladiator-ish intro. All thats missing is the entrances

You do realize how long it would take to do a match if you watched both fighter entrances and then the introductions right? I'm sure that's the reason they don't have entrances in the game. It would be a waste of time IMO.
i think the ppvs are like that as well.. i always notice fights after the main event
PPV's are like that if they need to fill time. They'll stick in undercard fights anywhere on the show if a maincard fight ends quick.

Actually, they don't show fighter entrances at the PPV's a lot of the time either. Usually only for the main event. I agree it would be pretty cool, but I doubt anybody here would sit and watch every single one. So, it would really be a waste of time for resources for THQ to work on it. I'm much happier with them using resources to make sure the servers work well (as they have been the past 2 days).

Also, I find it amusing that I keep hearing "they have matches AFTER the main event???" comments from mostly wrestling fans. You guys do realize the UFC is real so if a championship fight ends in the first round, they still have 20+ minutes to fill. They're not just going to tell people paying $50 a pop "Well, those are all the fights! Goodnight, folks!" This used to happen in boxing (not sure if it still does as I haven't seen a boxing PPV in ages). People would pay $50 and get like a 2 minute fight, and would go apeshit. It really makes sense if you think about it.

Every UFC PPV I've ordered (around 30 or so), they've shown entrances for every fighter.
Every UFC PPV I've ordered (around 30 or so), they've shown entrances for every fighter.
I guess it depends on what your definition of an "entrance" is. I've seen several that they don't show until they're basically entering the "prep point" and taking their shirt off. Not every single one is lights off, out of the tunnel, pyro, etc. Either way though, as a few of us discussed the other night, it's the kind of thing you would watch a couple times and then skip every other time you played the game. I would enjoy it, and yeah, I'd love to have custom entrance music for my fighter, but I can at least recognize I wouldn't watch it every time. So, I can't really blame them for not including it.

Every fight on the main card they show the entrance, period. The only times you don't see entrances is when they throw a prelim in to fill time.

Also, I lol'd @ pyro. This shit aint wrestling son.
