As for the Yankees, next year's team could look VERY different. Posada is all but guaranteed to be gone, especially since there's no way Montero doesn't make the club out of ST. Swisher could (should) be gone. Hell, Sabathia could be gone. I almost think I'd let CC walk if not for the complete lack of pitching on the market. He didn't perform that much better than Nova when all things are considered. Still, he kinda has the Yankees over a barrel with the uncertainty of the rest of the rotation.
AJ Burnett's return to Mr Hyde at the end of the season is truly mind boggling (his last 3-4 starts almost looked...dare I say it, competent), but of course it means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Hopefully Hughes can get back on track in the rotation. I feel like one more setback and he can permanently reserve his seat in the bullpen next to Joba.
Speaking of Joba, hopefully he can rebound from his injury because he actually looked strong and confident early in the year. Overall though, it's dumb to worry about the pitching (especially bullpen wise, where they are stacked) because once again, the bats completely failed them. Even though the Yanks outscored Detroit 28-17 in the series, it basically all came in two games.
It blows my mind that somehow this team is back to waiting on the three run homer AGAIN...and it appears Cano has caught the disease as well. There were so many times last night where just a single would tie the game, but everybody comes up swinging for the fences. Maybe that's an ego thing, but SOMEBODY (manager, hitting coach, captain, etc) has to keep it in check.
Brett Gardner was one of the most effective players in the series because he just hit the ball where it was pitched, and wasn't trying to pull everything. It's ridiculous that fans can see it, but coaches and players getting paid millions of dollars because they "know the game" can't. The fact that Posada and Jeter were two of the best hitters says a lot.
Umm... I'm not a Yankees fan at all, but here's a comparison:
Pitcher A: 237 IP, 8.72 K/9, 2.31 BB/9, 2.88 FIP, 3.02 xFIP
Pitcher B: 251 IP, 8.96 K/9, 2.04 BB/9, 2.99 FIP, 3.12 xFIP
Pitcher B is Justin Verlander, Pitcher A is C.C. To say that Sabathia was hardly better than Ivan Nova is... uh, well, it's something, but it certainly isn't accurate.
