2013 Yard Sale Thread

Went to a few sales this morning, only really went out for an hour just driving around locally.

Second place I hit was really good.
When I got there, I saw that some guy bought a boxed genesis with about 8 games. Dont know what he paid.

I sifted around some boxes and found:
Aladdin, jungle book, clue, toy story, and, a Factory sealed never opened mortak kombat 2! I paid $2 for it all

Looked around a bit more and found some ps1 games, picked out ridge racer, gta 2, and gran turismo. Paid $1.50 for them.

Everything came with boxes.

Nongaming, I found an orion set of binoculars with case. Really good, 10 x 70 magnification. Paid $2. Im thinking they are worth about $70 from what ive found.

Im thinking that MK2 should go for around $100

Bought a big tub of random game stuff for $16. Some junk, some good stuff, a little dirty, but, not too bad. A mostly complete dreamcast, just have to see if the av cable is in here.

Finished up the Cuba city wide yard sale today and here's what I ended up with:

Just a couple of Wii Guitars. However, they were in good shape and had a cool box. Gave $10 for the pair of them.

Picked this lot up as a sale near the end of the day. Picked up a Playstation 2 Slim with 21 games. There were no real notable titles other than Resident Evil 3 Nemesis and the first Gex. I also spotted Wii Sports and offered $15 for all of it. They countered $20 and I obliged.

Just a couple of cool coasters that I gave a nickel for.

No story. Picked up Spider-Man: Battle for New York for $1 on GBA.

No major story but this was a sale that I got to late. Most of the games were either shovelware or overpriced. I did find a couple games though.

Rocket Knight Adventures (Genesis)
Rise of the Argonauts (360)

They were supposed to be $3 and $4 but I offered $5 for the pair and got them.

Not a bad sale here. The guy selling had a bunch of consoles he was unloading. However, he said he'd let me buy just games that were bundled with the consoles. After looking around and finding some games, He made and offer to me for the games I had and a couple things I was interested in earlier. So here's the haul:

Gamecube controller (x2)
Gamecube power supply
Legend of Dragoon (PS1)
Dark Alliance II (Xbox)

He said he'd take $15 for it all and I was happy with that. On a side note, I have his phone number too and may make a blanket offer on whatever he has left.

Not much to talk about here. I walked up and saw these. I was curious to see if they were worth flipping and I offered a $1. Turns out there are a few rare pricey cards in there like the Black Rose Dragon and a Dreadmaster. Not to bad I guess.

I pulled up to this sale too late to see a guy taking an entire tote of consoles and games to his car. Seeing this, I pulled a ballsy move. I asked him if I could go through it and see if he would mind if I bought a couple games from him out of it. I picked out:

Legend of Zelda
Mega Man 2

He said he'd take $5 for them both and I was happy. The consoles were pretty gross and the only other games in there were super cheap NES games. So I didn't feel so bad for missing that one.

At this sale, there were no type of games out so I asked if there were any around. The lady said yes and brought out the following:

Monster 4x4 World Circuit (Wii)
Big Game Hunter (Wii)
Blazing Angels (Wii)
Tiger Woods 07 (Wii)
King of Clubs (Wii)
Rock n Roll Adventures (Wii)
Forza 2 Completed Collection (360)

I asked her what she wanted and she said $2 and her husband stopped her. He said they were worth more than that. He asked me what I would offer and I told him $6. He took that and I went on my way.

I saw this and actually got this as a joke for my wife who said she wanted a new wallet. I told her to close her eyes and hold her hands out as I got her a name brand wallet. I was surprised when she opened her eyes and actually said she would use it! It was a nice find for $1

No big story. Picked this up for $3. It was the Cars 2 Blu only and not the DVD included.

Also, not pictured yet, I bought probably 150 VHS anime tapes and probably 20 - 30 Anime DVDs. I told the guy all I had was a $10 and he took it. I'll post pics of that one later.

Alright, here we go.

I got this SNES/Genesis Bundle for $10

gspu0704.jpg

Games are:

Actraiser 2
Final Fight
Final Fight 3
King of Monsters 2
Mega Man X
Mystical Ninja (x2)
Super Mario World
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Sonic 2

Games were pretty nasty when I got them, but they cleaned up nice and all work. I also got a copy of TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, but unfortunately that one was damaged beyond repair :(

Other finds today include:

N64 Expansion Pak - $1
Clear Blue Dualshock 2 Controller - $1
Gamecube Wavebird Controller (No Receiver :() -$1
Club Nintendo 2011 Pin/Badges - $1

And an OG Xbox console for $10... but I'm probably gonna trade that in at my local Mom'n'Pop. I shouldn't have bought it :\

Well, here's that massive Anime collection I bought. Anyone interested in some of these?

At this sale I pulled up and asked the guy if he had any games and he said not but I saw he had a BUNCH of anime. He said make an offer on the whole lot and I offered him $10 and he took it. There were a lot of movies but also a bunch of series like Slayers, Bubblegum Crisis, and Pokemon. Also there were a few Yu-Gi-Oh DVDs in the mix too.

Its finally warming up here in Western New York. Seeing these finds already is giving me an itch. Got about a month before they pick up. Can't wait.
Congrats on the Final Fight 3 find - I've been looking for a copy of that forever.
Thanks :D I was stoked when I found it.

I have no use for VHS tapes, but DAMN I would love to watch all that stuff. The gold cased pokemon videos are making me drool

Yea... I see VHS at like every sale I go to, lol. Sometimes people are smart enough to offer them up for free, but they still sit.

Only VHS I still have are some TMNT episodes and movies from my childhood. I can't bring myself to throw them away, even though they're just taking up space.

I don't even have a VCR but I am hoping to find a vhs -> DVD recorder and put some of these on DVD.

On a side note there were also some hentai tapes in there. Oddly enough, Isn't the first time I've bought porn unknowingly at a yard sale.

I know how you feel. I got rid of most of my VHS, but I held on to Little Nemo (my favorite movie as a kid), a few random movies (Brave Little Toaster, Land Before Time, etc.), the first 37 Disney animated feature films (not including package films), and a few movies that were never released on DVD. Just about everything else went off to the recycling center.

That's over 40 VHS tapes! I never had that many at once in my entire life, since I could barely fit 15 in my home. The haul just terrifies me by sheer size. Most of the tapes I watch did come from the library though...

True story. I bought James Bond Octopussy at a yard sale a couple years ago. Or so I thought. It turns out it was Octopussy xxx with James Bone. The kid had put the other slipcover over with surgical precision so you couldn't tell. I didn't look at the discs but it was a 2 disc set. One disc is the xxx movie and the other is a 3D version of it. Paid $1 for it. I can also say I own a 3D movie ;-)

AMEN! I have 4 copies of it on VHS. I loved that movie and Professor Genius is awesome!

KAZAMA PAJAMAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's my other pickup from the other day:

They're all just about mint. Sharks never played, the pieces and cards are still wrapped. They were all $2 each. I asked her if we could go three for $5, she said no, because they'd been getting emails and calls about them all week. As I was picking them up from a pile on the floor of the garage, another woman mentioned that someone had phoned from San Francisco about the Lord of the Rings game.

EDIT: How come I can never take a good picture of things with my phone?

just wondering, how do you guys find yard sales to go to? I regularly go to flea markets, thrift shops etc, but I would definitely like to add yard sales to the mix as you really can get some good (probably the best) stuff. Do you guys check craigslist for yard sale listings, or just keep an eye out for signs?

Look at Craigslist to see when yard sales happen in your area. Where I am living now there are NO Friday sales. It was common in ny and mi. If there are any that look interesting go to them. Drive around a little also and chase some signs.

Some people here hate neighborhood sales, but I think they're great.

Just be careful, because once you get started its hard to stop.

The thing I have going for me is that my town is about 4,000 people. However, the neighboring town is about 17,000. So it's a lot less area to cover than some of the other folks here.

In regards to finding them, we have local forums that people post this kind of stuff to to advertise. also the local paper has some too but way more people use the forums. I can't really use craigslist because the closest town on there is about 1 1/2 hours out.

Just look around, find local forums, and read the paper really. Good Luck!

In my area, the paper holds dominant and most are located there. I am in a similar size area as the poster above so I guess it just depends on the area. Craigslist for me is for the whole county which can be a bit of area to cover so I tend to ignore it. On a good day in the summer, I can get and average of 40-50 sales in the paper. Plus each community has its town wide sales so there is a lot to go to in the area.

I got Mega Man 8 for ps1 and Mega Man X Collection for ps2 for $1 each. X Collection wouldnt load due to a scratch so I bought another copy at gamestop, swapped the discs, then returned it! Take THAT gamestop!

And wtf like 2 pages in and someone already found a vectrex! I never even expect to see one of those because I just assume everyone has the sense to look the value up on ebay for stuff like that now.

I would ignore CL (or I would be very careful about travelling to sales that are more than 5 miles out of your way for CL listed sales), we have had a bunch of posters here saying they have gone to fake sales, aka someone posts an ad for a huge video game sale in order to divert resellers from the real sale that they want to go to. After hearing that and the frequency of which it happens I can't take any sale ads on there seriously especially if I am going to take the time and effort to make it to the sale. If its within 5 miles of the radius of where I will be shopping in I will stop by the house, but the paper is dominant since you have to pay a fee to list an ad, I assume people won't be faking an ad if they have to pay for an ad. CL is free so really, anything goes, beware.

There is limited time to yard sale in on a Saturday morning since Sunday sales are uncommon here and I really don't have time to deal with fake sales in any propensity, I have to go to a sale that will actually be there, whether or not the merchandise is good or bad. I really only have from 9am or 10am to 1-2 pm if I am lucky on Saturday to yard sale, thankfully sales here start late and it takes a lot of time to yard sale, one minute it will be 10am the next min it will be noon already and soon after 1pm then you run the risk of people packing up, so again I really don't have the time to be dealing with a sale that could potentially be fake.

One thing is for sure, I am NOT going 20 miles out of my way for that sale on CL that promises video games from NES to XBox 360..... moreover, I am not going 20 miles out of my way for ANY sale.

What a scumbag.

Yeah you definitely have to be careful with craiglist yard/garage sales. I am one of the people that have fallen for some of those fake sales. If the sale sounds too good to be true...it usually is

Got a callback from a yard sale I went to asking if the had games. I'm meeting her today. She said she had n64, PS2, and Wii games. Here's hoping for xenoblade!

Her last name isn't Robinson is it?

Yeah I am not even sure if the whole fake yard sale thing is rampant in my area but regardless I do fine without reading CL for yard sales. If its in the neighborhood of another sale I am going to chances are I will find it on my way to whatever sale I am going to anyways. If its not on the way to another sale or in the general area then it's not necessary to go out of my way for it.

I have shown up to newspaper listed sales that were not out for some reason, I always just assume the person had an emergency or something and couldn't set up.

Unfortunately whomever started the fake yard sale thing has ruined it for numerous legit sellers who want to post an ad on there for a legit sale. Because you really have no way of knowing if its a fake sale or not, the only way to tell would be if a sale is listed in multiple places it is more likely to be legit.

You really overestimate the fake sales thing... I'd be shocked if more than 1 in 100 is fake and that is actually probably high... I use craigslist for all my sales and I have never found one...

I hit 2 or 3 fake ones last season. I guess I won't have to worry too much this year, since I work every Saturday now, so by the time I get out of work (like 3pm usually), most of the good stuff is gone.
Her last name isn't Robinson is it?
I'm not getting the reference there. Nedd a little help with that one.

However, I didn't leave the callback empty handed.

8636530090_2bddc2047f_z.jpg

This came from a callback from a yard sale. I ended up looking and most of the games were just cheap ones, I did spot these. Also the tag reader purchase was for the books since Avin already has a pen. I ended up with:

Cat in the Hat (Tag Book)
Star Wars Clone Wars (Tag Book)
Kai-Lan Super Sleepover (Tag Book)
Tag Reader Pen
Legend of Mana (PS1)
Action Replay Max disc (PS2)

I ended up paying $20 for the whole set. Got home and tried the pen out but it didn't work well. I found that a battery exploded in it and if the batteries are turned JUST right, it will work. However, I don't want to mess with it so It'll go on eBay.

Even if an ad on CL isnt fake its still worthless anyway because any ad saying it has games will have resellers lined up around the block at 4am, thats if they didnt already email ahead of time and buy everything the night before the sale starts

This just isn't universally true. I've found a lot of good games at sales that advertised them on craiglist. In some areas (like where i live now) craigslist is the only place yardsales are advertised.

People don't go early to sales around here, either.
The graduate (or the recent Hardee's commercial)
Ah. I've not seen the graduate and I don't have cable or satellite. I'm just a Netflix guy.

I got in on that free year of netflix promo a few months ago. I rarely watch regular tv now, will definitely start paying the $8 a month when my one year promo ends.

Really don't think this would happen here, not at 4am at least. More realistically an hour or 30 min before the sale. Sometimes people set up an hour late here since they can't get up, so if a sale starts at 10am they won't be out till 11am. I have held sales here before, with games advertised on CL and the paper. I got maybe 2 early birds and I got FAR more inquiries about a few old fisher price toys I was selling that were virtually worthless on ebay. A few old games aren't worth lining up at 4am here for lol.

The best games I have found have been at sales that did not advertise at all that I found by driving around or those that just advertised electronics or generically, "games".

Estate sales get ALL the traffic here, people want cheap used furniture and appliances and tools here more than anything. Estate sales typically have people lined up at least an hour before they start. Mind you I have never seen games at an estate sale and the one time I did they were still sitting there as I left an hour before the sale was going to end due to the games being overpriced

Nothing is universally true when it comes to sales, it all depends on location, location, location and even varies greatly from house to house or week to week.

The key is not to focus on sales that mention games. Don't avoid them but don't make them a priority.

I had some good luck at a tag sale this weekend. I got 10 dreamcast games for $1.60 each with the highlights being Project justice and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. You can see everything I got this weekend in my latest video on my channel below.

I say that because I literally saw 4 people lined up at a house at 4am for a 6am yard sale once and it turned out the only thing the guy had were 2 sports games for NES. A few weeks before I got to a sale an hour early and someone already bought all the games....then even before that I got to a sale where someone emailed the night before and bought everything. 90% of the time what happens is I would get there and hear "oh someone emailed us about the nintendo and he came and bought it all last night". Then on the other hand a lot of times I see insane prices, but what kills me is these people think their prices are a steal, like once a guy advertised NES games and that he was moving and ABSOLUTELY HAD TO GET RID OF THEM. He said no offer would be declined....so I emailed him before the sale and asked what he had and what he was asking and he had 30 common games and an NES and wanted $750, but would go as low at $600!! I mean seriously who even bring that much cash to a damn yard sale?!

I usually have monday or wednesday off during the week, and Sundays because we are closed, so my yard/garage sailin days have definitely been diminished. I did catch a Sunday sale last week advertising games. The dude had 4 different psp systems, wanted 90 dollars for each system. I never had a psp before, but figured 90 bucks was a bit much for a used psp with no games along with it.

I went to a sale this past weekend that advertised N64 games, I got there at 8 (when it started), the guy said someone was waiting as soon as he stepped out his door to set up around 7ish, and bought them from him..

I was on my way to the post office this morning to drop off some APO orders and stopped at a single yard sale on the way up.

Didnt have any games out, kids were young like 7 and 8 so it was a long shot but I asked if they had any old games they were looking to sell.

He brought out a GC with 2 controllers and 6 games.

I paid $13 for Mario sunshine, mario party 7, animal crossing, and a nintendo gamecube controller. He didnt want to part with both controllers so that he could sell the GC to someone else later which was fair.

He said he had some ps1 games, like 1 final fantasy's, but they looked for about 7-8 min and couldnt find em.

Pretty happy with my pickup though, especially since I had no plans of yard sailing today and came back with some games.

Sales rarely list games here, however if they are gone instantly what most often happens is the neighbors of the seller are the first to buy them or they were put aside for someone in the family before the sale even started.
