Well, no English Mother 3 announcement, but I am glad that Earthbound will come to the 3DS Virtual Console sooner than we expected.  Also, Rhythm Heaven Megamix.  As far as I'm concerned, I'm okay with the latest direct.

Although, the official English title for SMT x FE...eh.  I'm fine with Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but adding the "#E" makes it a bit tacky.  I'm sure that was an added obligation.

EDIT: Also, the box art for Federation Force confirms it has amiibo support too.

Really no excuse that they'd need to wait for Nintendo Account since cross buy already exists for other titles between 3DS and Wii U. I expected to see a discount like we got for owning Wii VC games on the Wii U at bare minimum. I'll be passing on these, shame.

More info about SNES on 3DS. Apparently, they run like the GBA games from the Ambassador program, so no StreetPass, Sleep Mode, etc.

From what has been said by tech junkies, apparently it's extremely difficult to get SNES and GBA games running on 3DS hardware, hence why it's only for New 3DS.

Lame, was hoping for a pay $1 for the 3DS version at a minimum. Obviously cross-buy would be best, but I won't begrudge a $1 to add functionality.

I have the ambassador VC games only, as I refuse to pay "N" for games I've owned several times over the years, but they all look like ass to me on the 3DS. They have a "dim" look to them, like the brightness setting is on 1 or something, and it can't be brightened.

I'm guessing the SNES games will look the same, so no thank you, as I can play SNES games perfectly on several of my handheld devices and adjust settings to my liking.

I'm always so amazed at the little amount of work these guys put in to these VC games, and how fans gobble them up. Once I saw what Sega did with their 3D classics VS. what "N" did, I won't give these clowns a dollar for such little effort, as they should be ashamed.

So, here is what somebody posted on Kotaku about a month ago about SNES on 3DS when the Mother 3 rumors were going strong.

I’ve written this many times in the past and I’ll continue to write it: it is technically impossible for the 3DS (vanilla model at least, and at this point they’re not going to make the games available just for New 3DS, if it’s even feasible) to do emulation at a level that is acceptable in both quality and presentation for SNES and GBA. Emulation simply requires more horsepower than the 3Ds affords. Yes, you could cut corners and enable frame skip, increase performance by lowering accuracy, etc, but Nintendo has little interest in releasing substandard products.

Hell, the Wii, which is, for all intents and purposes, more powerful than the 3DS, only barely scrapes by emulating the SNES library at full speed, and that required significant tweaking from the libretro group (the snes9x gx line of emulators doesn’t even run at full speed).

Of course, by now you’re probably thinking to yourself “this guy is dumb because what about the ambassador program? Clearly they can emulate GBA games on 3DS just fine.”

Nope!

The games released for the ambassador program aren’t running via emulation. They’re running via virtual mode, just like what DS games do when you boot them up. The 3DS is backwards compatible with the DS because it has DS compatible hardware inside. Likewise, the DS was built with GBA hardware compatibility in mind. If the 3Ds had a GBA slot, you could technically play GBA games on it (likewise, you can technically play GameCube games on the Wii U because they use the same architecture).

So why doesn’t Nintendo just release GBA games in virtual mode? Not completely positive on that one, but if I had to wager a guess, it’s because they can’t wrap it in their fancy Virtual Console package.

So there you go. An explanation.

- SNES on New 3DS eShop. Includes Pixel Perfect mode. Starts with Pilotwings, Super Mario World, and F-Zero now. March 24th gets Super Mario Kart, Earthbound, and DKC 1. April 14th gets Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and DKC 2.

I don't even care if they're New 3DS only. I was planning on upgrading eventually, anyway. Now I have another reason to do so.

That's not really surprising but it's disappointing none the less.  Emulation is really computationally expensive if you're going for 1:1 perfection.

Badge Arcade is giving 2 free plays everyday for a week.

I think the image in this post from the Japanese Twitter for the game does a pretty good job of expressing my surprise that we're getting Solitiba after all this time:

I downloaded Super Mario World and have to say, the emulation is pretty much perfect.  Here is something interesting as well - they are really small, about the size of an NES VC game.  SMW is 68 blocks, total.  So apparently their emulation code is pretty darn efficient and small.  And it supports a save state, like other VC games.  I'm glad they did this, the SNES is my favorite system of all time - there are several games I'd love to have on the go.

The ROM + an emulator for SMW is only about 4 MB. So 8 MB isn't really that efficient and small.

Compared to the size of their other virtual console games it is. The emulator itself is apparently only about 4 MB, which is pretty good considering the accuracy and it is uncompressed. Unless they buried the SNES emulation code partially in the System Update that came down recently.

See, the thing I don't understand about this guy's explanation is that if the Wii is barely able to emulate SNES games at full speed, then how the hell does it perfectly emulate so many N64 games?! Surely, a game like Mario 64 must take a lot more horsepower to emulate than any SNES game. I'm not sure how well it runs because I don't have it, but the Wii VC even has Majora's Mask, which was a later N64 game and required the Expansion Pak!

Because you can offload most of the graphics functions to the video hardware. Polygon rendering isn't much different. When doing the graphics for the SNES, you have to replicate what it is doing in order for it to be accurate. 2D games on modern hardware are basically done using polygons, but back then they had to have scrolling, sprites, etc. because the hardware wasn't powerful enough to draw the background and objects as textured polygons. In other words, the differences between how the graphics are rendered is much closer to a polygon based system like the N64 than a sprite based system like SNES.

And in order to do some advanced things on the SNES, they had to do timing and hardware tricks, if you don't emulate accurately, the results can be catastrophic to gameplay. That's really where the rubber meets the road. Anytime the developers had to do weird things to get results it becomes a problem for accurate emulation, and SNES developers did ALOT of tricks.

It's ok. It's another one of them RPG maker games I believe. It starts fun but then the newness wears off. Not my favorite Rune Factory simulator, personally. But that's just me.
Definitely not an RPG maker game. Was originally a mobile phone game in Japan, before it got iOS and PSP ports. I've only played the iOS version, and it's been a few years, so I can't really give a detailed impression, but I remember enjoying it enough. You can often pick it up on the iOS store for $0.99 nowadays -- think the 3DS version might have some improvements, but don't know for sure.

Hmm, interesting. But you're not saying that N64 games were ported to the Wii, are you? I mean, it was still done through emulation, right?

I was always under the impression that straight-up emulation had almost entirely to do with the hardware's raw power in relation to the power of the hardware that it's emulating. But it sounds like you're implying that in this case, it has more to do with architecture similarity? That if both consoles were designed around rendering polygonal/3D graphics that it would be easier to for one to emulate the other than it would be a fully sprited-based 2D console/game?

Would this mean that the Wii has an easier time emulating a game like Star Fox than most other SNES games, even though no Super FX games were ever released for its Virtual Console?

I mean, the Wii also emulated games like Paper Mario, which used a lot of sprites. And it seemed to perfectly emulate 2D games from all other kinds of hardware too (like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, which was on TurboGrafx-CD). Of course, I have no idea how much effort was put into these or how taxing it was on the Wii hardware.

Ok. What about the game could not have been made using RPG Maker? I'm not necessarily saying it was positively but I distinctly remember back in 2012-2013 when this game came out the very same discussion. 4-5 years later, it's probably still a relevant statement.

It's an OK game, not necessarily worth Nintendo prices (and this coming from someone who owns it on iOS and 3DS). But it's nothing more than RPG Maker fare....

Capcom and Konami are releasing a bunch of their SNES games on New 3DS...in Japan. Titles include the first 3 Mega Man X titles, Mega Man 7, Super Contra, Fatal Fury, and a bunch of Street Fighter II games.

I enjoyed Adventure Bar Story and beat it at around 40 hours. It does get very grindy, but I found the store-running and combat to be pretty fun. I recommend it if you like other grindy games, like classic RPGs, Pokemon, etc.

I hope they release the SNES version of Megaman & Bass someday. The GBA version wasn't so good..

Not only did PoPoloCrois get terrible reviews, it literally chased me back into the arms of Rune Factory 4 (and possibly a PC farming game).

Bravely Default, however, I won't get suckered into.  The first one was so long... it was just.. a slog.  I got a code from Best Buy and snorted because I can't imagine it's going to be better than the first.  Likely worse.  And the initial reviews seem to indicate my generalization is basically right.

Other than the CE which I'll likely never open I'm definitely waiting on BS. It didn't seem to be too loved in Japan.
