All Pro Football 2K8

The game definitely has its faults and failings, but the game is fun. I have not enjoyed the Madden series in the year's past, but I have found a great deal of enjoyment in the short day that I have played. There are many holes in gameplay and polish, but this is attributible to being away from football. What has impressed me the most has been the defense and the AI. There is a lot of disguising involved, and I feel as if the defense adjusts well. Off to play some more.

i like the voiceovers from the players during the game.... i thoguth it was awesome when i through a td to rice and then a scene comes up saying something like: cmon man, thats marino back there... what you expect..

that was awesome..and the models look great.. too tall definitely stands out

Anyone who's not amazing at the game want to play this afternoon? I'd like to play an online match, but I think I'd rather play against a CAG who's not a profanity spouting 12 year old.
guys..if you can run the flea flicker 3 times in a row successfully, the game's ai is bad... I'd like to see if that's true...other than that it's an opinion about game,,,
nope i got killed 2 out of the 3 times

This game rocks. I love how you create and manage your team, its a lot more intuitive and there are no stats. You judge players more like a real coach would. The animations rock. This is the way a football game should play IMO. I can't beleive 1up gave it a 6.5. I hope they don't spend all EA's money in one place.

damn gamefly had all yesterday to ship this out to me and they didn't. Now I check today and it is at "low" availability. Meaning It will be a long ass time before I get this from them. fuck.

Overall the game is fun. Does it replace Madden...no, but I believe it is a step in the right direction. And for people like me who don't like Madden, it will scratch that football itch. Is it worth $60...I would say more like $40.
Definitely worth checking out if you are a old school Tecmo Bowl fan or a fan of 2k5. There are alot of familiar names which makes it great. I spent at least an hour an a half just getting my Vikings uniforms correct (no horns on the helmet though). Create a player is average. Also when you create a player, it takes one of the eleven spots open for your all pro players. That means no recreating the entire roster of your favorite NFL team with only eleven spots available per team.

The main drawback IMO is that you will play a team and they might have the same all pro player you might have. It really pulls you out of the game. They should have made it that once a player is picked, he is not able to be used by any other team. Another drawback although minor was my first season game, the team I was playing had the same head coach as me. Same name and all which again pulls you out of the world you're trying to enjoy. How hard is it to create a random face and name for each team's head coach.

Overall, I do not regret buying this game. It is definitely fun and plays almost just like 2k5 with nicer graphics and animations. We have to support this title if you want to see them make another one. There is definitely alot of potential with this.

Wow, those are some glaring errors. A player should NOT be on both teams...that sounds lazy to me.

Someone else reported that it felt like a XBLA game....but the gameplay was good. We'll see...I may get it when it is $20 or so.

It wouldn't have been feasible since there are only a certain number of legends, and too many teams.

Yeah but there are 240 former pro players and I'm thinking about 15 teams in a season. That's only 161 players taken out of 240. There are some bums but that would just have added to strategizing how you want your franchise to be. If they did it like some sort of draft, that would just add another level of fun. Can you imagine -"With the first pick, the Minneapolis Norseman (that's my team in the game) take Walter Payton." That to me would have sealed the deal for me.

That's why I am hoping for another game next year. They could add franchise mode. Then you would draft your team, run it for a few years, have guys retire and then do some DLC of new all pro players broken down by decades or something like that. There are so many retired players over the last 5 decades that it would be a long time before they ran out.

Okay! How about this? They could add franchise mode, again you draft players but since we already know how long these guys were in the league, that's how long you would have them in your franchise. This is just adding another level of complexity that would make it a great game.

For example you could take a Bo Jackson who was a force in the league but was forced out only after a couple of seasons due to injury or you could take a guy who was in the league 15+ seasons like a Jackie Slater. That would affect whether they're a gold , silver or bronze level player as well. Is anyone out there feeling me? You got to admit that would be sweet.
Ah, 1up. Once again scoring a game whose number doesn't match with the text. They easily talk it up like it's an 8.0+ game, but then give it a 6.5. I can't stand their reviews for most anything anymore.

I was going to weigh in on what they found to be faults in the game, but it's exactly what we already knew. There's not a million different options for single player. For the way I play football games, it's not that big of a deal.
It's the wicked yakker!

Seems fitting to me. The gameplay's solid, but the features are lacking compared to the standards for football games these days.

OXM gave it an 8.0

The Verdict
+ Serves up a ton of recognizable NFL heroes.
+ Finally, a change of pace from Madden
- Could be called All-Dallas Football for its unbalanced pool of players
? 2K Sports, don't you know Bo?
The review was mostly positive, as evidenced by the 8.0 score. I'm sure I'll check it out at some point; the only question is when.

I'm thinking now. ebay copies are already afloat and you could probably snatch a copy for $30ish shipped, and the game will only be a few days old.
According to my seller account, average final sell price for the game is currently $47. Wait for it....
$47? Well that's the average price. eBay is full of suckers. Keep bidding... patience is a virtue. Save yourself the money, this is cheapassgamer.com. I had no problem giving Sega/2k the $20 when it was that price, obviously this is the next gen and it will be awhile before we see that price. Right now my $60 sports title goes for NHL2k8 thanks to the wonderful league CAGHL that was created last season. Maybe you guys can change my mind by making a league.

I'll pick it up soon, I think. and I'm probably not going to be good at it...but I'm a profanity spouting 29 year old. :D
Maybe you guys can change my mind by making a league.
I was thinking the same thing. For those in the know, how is the online component of All-Pro, as far as making a league, stat tracking, the usual 2K sports stuff?

I bought it last night for $35 after gift card. I am definitely not disappointed.

Let me say first that I tried the NCAA 08 demo a few nights ago and I was totally unimpressed. The gameplay was okay, as were the "action" animations, but the graphical polish was lacking outside of the player models. Also, simple animations such as linemen getting down in their stance were ugly and robotic. The sideline people were N64 quality. Though I just mentioned the bad parts, it was an okay football game overall, but with a few things that really irked me about the presentation.

2k8 is what I expected out of an early next-gen football title. It definitely feels next-gen to me; it impresses with the animations and graphical polish (though the player heads could use a little work). I was worried about the player-chatter and cutscenes, but they impressed me as well.

It plays a lot like 2k5, but with improvements in every aspect of the gameplay and presentation. I couldn't recommend it at $60 for people who will really miss a deep single-player mode. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoyed 2k5 because of the gameplay. Online is very good with almost no noticeable lag (except kicking). The AI has improved, as has the commentary.

Though some of the standard features such as franchise mode are absent, the actual gameplay is the best I've experienced in a football game.

Whoever has a chance to try out All Pro Football 2k8 at a friend's house, or even by renting, I highly recommend it. You will probably be initially disappointed because you can't play with current NFL players. But after customizing your team roster full of NFL legends, and even customizing your own team logos/jerseys your disappointment will quickly be forgotten.

I can't stop playing!! I have never played football for this long against the computer (count hours straight) even when I was a diehard 2k2-2k5 fanboy. I've only played 2 online matches so far, out of a total of probably 16 hours that I've played since release day. I've just been trying to find a combination of Legends that I like playing with. Then I'll bring my team online to face other people's Legend combos. GET ALL PRO FOOTBALL 2k8!!!! LIKE LIEUTENANT DAN SAID, THE GAMEPLAY IS THE BEST EVER IN A FOOTBALL GAME!!!

YMMV. :)

Gotta cover my ass, y'know. Never take a hard stance on anything; that's my motto. Gotta do that middler dance. :)

But seriously, although some might not agree that the gameplay is the best ever, I defy anyone to tell me that it isn't at least "good".

I just played a game against the LA Legends. They have Elway, Barry Sanders, Dwight Clark and Jerry Rice on their offense. And just like the NFL these days with free agency, if you spend the money and stack one side of your team, the other half suffers. Anyway I went the other way and stacked my defense with Lott, R. White, Doleman and Browner. It was probably the best video football game I ever played. We lost 13-7 in OT, but the thing that is great is that in Elway fashion, he drove them down the field against me with less than 2 minutes to play and tied the game up and put it in overtime. That was just after I missed a field goal that would have put the game out of reach. It was just great.

2k just released a video editor on the marketplace for 400 points...the same week as the game is released...that is fucking weak sauce.
2k just released a video editor on the marketplace for 400 points...the same week as the game is released...that is fucking weak sauce.
If EA did it, we'd already have 50 posts cursing them out.
EA at least has the common sense to wait a few weeks.
What is 2k thinking?
Dumb move. They needed all the features they could get in the hard copy.
i think im going to try ebay. 30 dollars would be AMAZING.
Well looks like your gonna have to wait. As of the time posting this people have been inflating the eBay price as usual. Granted you can get it for about $40ish shipped which is still $20 off for a used title, but good luck finding them at $30ish now. I'm gonna keep bidding like crazy in hopes of getting lucky.

I think 2K drop the ball on this guys. If they wanted to take away from Madden, they should have sold it for no more then $39.99. The commentary is almost the same as 2K5. I hate the way players walk through each other. I had two #71's running down the field at the same time. They could have made a 10-year franchise mode and maybe named the decade's best players.

I have played the 2K football since the first version on Dreamcast. I tried Madden in 02, 06 and 07. Madden has the extra's, but lack in the gameplay. I just think 2K could have given us more.
It wouldn't have been feasible since there are only a certain number of legends, and too many teams.
My mistake. There are 24 teams in a season so you are right. There's two conferences of 12 teams and you play a 16 game season.

Also, I think when you take an all pro player, no other team can take that same player like I said earlier. I think that was just a glitch because I checked that team's roster and he wasn't on it.

I believe they did the same thing with there college basketball game as well.

is there an online league option? I would probably pick this up if I saw cag league interest.

Seems like this thread has been mostly about people thinking about getting it as opposed to people who actually bought it. Im just so hesitant about getting this knowing that Madden is coming out in a few short weeks.

SO I just bought NCAA 2 days ago. Can someone justify me purchasing this game? I really want to buy it, but I can't seem to justify the purchase in my mind.

I'm still a little on the fence, but from the discussion so far, I think 2K8 is the way to go for me. I'm through with Madden... their pathetic showing this gen is simply MOTS from the monopoly franchise. They figure it's not worth trying when they hold the sandbox full of licenses. I enjoyed some of the madden's in the past... (Albeit, I skipped over more than a couple of years...) After Madden 06 on the 360 being fairly craptacular... I think I'll wait until 2009 to see if the folks at EA bother to do anything to substantially improve the next-gen version.

*shrug* Not being a hardcore football fan, I am not going to miss the team logos and names all that much.

played a few more games in my season tonight. I'm loving it. Probably not for everyone and not at full price (I used a gift card on it), but it's a fantastic game of football, that's for sure :)
Mech, just rent it. Same for you Ryles!! That way you'll know if you like it or not!!
I know I will like it, thats the problem.
Is the play by play given by the same two dudes from all the other 2K (football) games?

If so, that's almost worth the price of admission right there.
It is. Also, they've cut out some of the groaner lines in 2k5. There is still some cheese occasionally, but sometimes it's actually funny and it's at least always tolerable.

On a different note, I'd like to be in a league, but I've got very restricted windows of play time.
I'd be up for a league

I suck, but all the better for you, right? ;)
Hey, I haven't won a game yet. Played two online and about four on All-pro difficulty against the CPU, lost em all. I'm loving every minute of it though. :)

Last game I led a 30-second drive downfield down 7, got to the 3 yard line and couldn't finish it off. Pretty exciting.

So what kind of lineups are you guys using? Right now I have Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Herman Moore (kind of my go-to guy actually), Randall Cunningham, and some others. I like the combo, although I guess when it comes down to it, it hasn't been very successful.

Update, put a lot more quality time in with the season mode. I'm hooked. The animations feel really next gen to me. Much more realistic. Won't be playing anything else till September 25. Tip: Don't pick a gold QB unless you REALLY like throwing. I got Joe Montana and all I do is run Barry Sanders, so I kind of screwed up. Also, the acheivements are pretty cool.
