All Pro Football 2K8

Yes it does require explainig and no I am not 4 years old.
Yes it does require explainig and no I am not 4 years old.
you say madden is better, saying it looks and plays better but give no examples supporting your statement.

saying that everyone is going to buy madden and there will be a price drop on 2k8 for "the few" people that have been waiting for 2k football. Don't know where you have been but 2k football has a large following and many people will buy this regardless of the price. And Madden isn't that superior that 2k is going to piss their pants and lower the game price $20.

You then go on to say madden isn't worth the $60, yet you buy it anyways.

You sir are a Madden fanboy.

Go back and read all my posts in the thread you started and you can see why I was confused. I think you will see I prefer the 2k series over madden.

maybe next time make posts that make more sense and then we won't have this problem.

I have better things to do then go back and read your posts. I don't hate you that bad.

Woooo.....easy tiger!!!!

Man, I am such a complete idiot.

I had a close game in my season, I was going to win by 3. I took a knee and before the clock expired the play selection came up and for some reason I opted for a fake punt pass. Yeah, um, was totally picked off and they ran it back for a touch down. Stupid Steelers Iron Men.

I win at play calling! ;)

Here are my impressions of playing the game quite a bit this past weekend. Sorry in advance for the long post!

What I Like
The customization of my team. I like to tweak my stars based on what type of team I'm after, i.e. pass heavy, run heavy, etc. The game makes it very easy to put together a team.

Playing with the old-time NFL players is a lot fun. It'll be cool to see who they add in the future.

The commentators are great. Sure they repeat themselves a lot, but that's pretty normal for any sports game ("Boom, he's on his back!!" - Madden)

The load times are very quick, or at least quicker than I expected.

The game plays a great game of football. The AI is pretty smart, though not perfect, and is challenging in a good way. I feel a sense of accomplishment by winning against the CPU.

The speed-up clock feature is a welcome change. This helps with games that are 5 minute quarters, but last over an hour because of lack of any real huddle time. The game makes up for that by speeding up the clock until the playclock hits 20, though not in all instances, like a no-huddle offense.

What I Don't Like
The game is very shallow. Only a season mode? No franchise? I guess it would get tricky with the draft, i.e. no new stars to draft since all the name brand guys are already "in the league", resulting in the draft being filled with cpu-generated guys. Still, they could have added something, like "Create a Legend" a la the Superstar mode in Madden, or something similar to their NBA 2K series.

Some of the play mechanics take getting use to. The kicking was tricky, but I'm pretty good at it now once I figured out what I'm suppose to do. But, even after playing all these games, I still pump-fake when I don't want to, resulting in a sack. Very annoying.

It costs too much. Remember when we'd get a $50 game for $20 from 2K sports? This is the reverse. This is a $30 game at a $60 price. I'm thinking they are going to drop the price to $40 once Madden hits to help out sales, but I can't recommend buying this game for $60.

Overall, I'd give this game a 7/10. All-Pro 2K8 plays a great game of football, but the overall package is lacking features. I'll probably pick this up once I can get used copy for $30 - $40, as I like the game, but not at $60

Audibles are your friend.

2k sports only did that 1 year where they were selling their games for 20 bucks.. every other year they were the same amount as the EA Sports games...

I think the $20 games was just for that year, knowing that EA was going to buy out the NFL license they said well fuck you EA we'll sell our game for
$20 to kill your sales.

I guess they sold NBA and NHL for that price too, so I don't know the logic behind that.

you are wrong..

1st - NFL sold their license out, they decided to sell not EA to buy... EA just threw money at them

2nd - All the 2k sports games were 20 bucks... they were trying to break the EA stranglehold on the sports gaming market...2k really shine in NBA and NHL (until this past year)

Yeah, the year of $20 sports games was 2K's attempt to get players to try their sports games, instead of instinctively buying EA's games. It worked too, because sales soared, and EA was forced to cut their games down to $30 for that year. Of course, soon after EA went on their buying spree of every sports league license. I think EA really gave them a scare. EA relies extremely heavily on their sports brand.

I finally rented the game tonight. It's definitely a fun little game of football, and I love the animations, half-time/post-game show, player on field comments, Defensive AI, and all the little things. The gameplay is fun, but just doesn't seem as smooth and fast as NCAA 2008. Maybe I just haven't gotten used to it yet.

I haven't had any problems with the kicking and actually like the set-up. The only thing I've had any problems with are players catching up to me on break aways. Is it just a matter of tapping the A button to try to keep speed boosted? Also, is there a manual catch button to help me make catches? I've had a lot of dropped balls. My rented game only came with very basic instructions, so if anyone else has any other good tips, definitely let me know....

Press Y to catch balls/swat balls. And yeah keep pounding on the A button to keep up the speed. And you'll have alot of dropped balls if your timing is off for the pass plays. And make sure your QB's feet are squared up before throwing. Charging up before the catch really helps too for Non-Legend players.
Charging up before the catch really helps too for Non-Legend players.
I've been charging up my quarterback before he throws, but can you also charge the receiver before the catch? Is it just a matter of holding down A while the ball is in the air and then pressing Y to catch?

You don't really need to charge up your QB before throws if he is a Gold Legend. If you just lob a pass (nice firm, but not holding down button) your reciever will have time to charge up a little bit before the catch. Have you tried doing a little bit of practice? You can see what really works for pass plays.

Aside from the lack of franchise or dynasty mode I have another pet peeve. How come I can't use a 3-4 defense? Is it in there and I'm missing it or does every All Pro team have to have four down linemen?

Penguin, you just adjust your playbook. That's what I did for my 3-4 killer defense team. I also run 5-2, Nickel 3-3, and Dime 3-2!!! Then adjust your depth chart for where you want to place your players in that defense. Works great. Just a little more work. But with great results.

No, I just jumped right in and played a few games. Thanks for the advice though....off to the practice field I go:D

Hey guys on Major Nelson's site it says that the DEMO IS NOW AVAILABLE!!!! Hopefully it's a decent one. Except for the fact that XBOX Live is down currently.

Thanks for the tips richierich. I seem to be doing better now overall. One thing though, I had a game this morning that I was up 14 - 0 late in the third quarter and the other team just completely turned things around on me. First, one of their DBs jumped from like a mile away in front of a wide open receiver to intercept a pass and ran it back for a TD. Then Steve Grogan (yes, Steve Grogan!) started completing 100% of his passes and my guy (Theisman) couldn't complete any, nor could Sweetness get past the line anymore after having no problem prior to that. Finally, Grogan led an 80 yard scoring drive, hitting double and triple covered receivers a bunch of times and they scored with 1 second left to beat me 17 - 14. Maybe I just suck, but damn that AI was cheap during that comeback. Is that pretty typical, because it really stepped over the line from being fun to frustrating.

Goddamn I hate Joe Theismann. He's such a fucking whiner. I'd start Ryan Leaf, Billy Joe Tolliver, Rick Mirer, before Theismann. What a dick. So yeah, Grogan's hot shit next to JT in my book.

2K5 was pretty bad, I thought, about interceptions. otherwise, it played pretty fair, but yeah, it did give up a lot of cheap interceptions.

I played the demo. Yeah, it's a lot like 2K5 as for as controls and visuals go. I forgot some of the controls and for some reason, the demo doesen't allow you to go to options to look at the controller layout. Sometimes they appear on the loading screens, but whatever. Another thing about the demo is that it's only a 5min quarter. Not bad, an extra minute compared to EA's demos. Take that! lol. Animations are sexy.

Just got this from Gamefly. Glad I just rented it. It was ok. Very light on the features. The graphics look good but the animations are a little weird. I saw some "ice skating" in a couple of the replays. Also if I have Barry Sanders on my team he shouldn't be on the team I'm facing. If it were a $30-$40 game you could justify the lack of features but a $60 game and then they are trying to charge for the highlight reel editor thing online feel like a ripoff. I prefer NCAA08 to this.

To me the best part of the game is the strategy in choosing up your team . The stadium are pretty cool in a Vince McMahon XFL kinda way.

I wish they would just make 2K5 backward compatible.

Those looking for a price drop or sale may happen sooner then I thought. According to vgchartz All Pro 2k only did 54k copies on It's first week and the PS3 version did a whopping 16k versus NCAA 361k/82k. eBay values are bound to plummet.

I played the demo and it was great 2k action.

This sounds like a good old fashioned Tecmo Superbowl dicking. Some of you old schoolers should know what I'm talking about.

That happened to me, but I think it was more a situation of my scrubs playing over their head for far too long. I was playing against a team that had the Juice and my defense had only 2 or 3 stars on it. They held OJ to less than 100 yards for almost 3 full quarters in a very close game. Then he got loose. I won in over time, but the CPU busted 2 HUGE runs out of nowhere on me in the 4th.

Nice to see 2K updating that football engine from 3 years ago. Maybe after signing up all these old players, they didn't have enough money left over to, you know, add things to their 2K5 engine? I dunno.

I wish they'd let you save CPU created teams. There's been some nice CPU teams I've played, but it'd save the user some trouble not having to manually make them to play in an exhibition.

Shouldn't you be playing madden instead of trolling.

Espn's Bill Simmons calls it the no way in hell game

Played a few games and I have to say that I'm sorely disapointed. Don't get me wrong, I could care less about official teams (NFL became dead to me when EA snatched up the rights / Bills went back to being the worse team evar) AND the core gameplay, animation & graphics are still leaps and bounds better than that other football game, however the severe lack of extras hurts. Compare this to ESPN 2k5; you had the Crib (the forerunner of achievements), Dynasty (not my cup 'o tea, but it was still there), Season, Top 25 and First-person Football to keep you glued to the TV for weeks at a time.

In APF you have Exhibition, Online and a bare bones Season mode, which is little more than a string of random bouts put together. And to top it all off, ESPN had a MSRP of $19.99, compared to $59.99.

Now Tiburon can truly go toe-to-toe with Visual Concepts, with Madden being the feature-heavy game that has mediocre gameplay (although there's hope that Madden 08 is getting reworked, but that remains to be seen), compared to the awesome, but super shallow, gameplay of APF 2k8.

My advice for anyone is pretty simple. Grab Gamefly and rent either or both for a few months until you're done with them. Much better than spending $60 on a game that's just barely worth $20 (commenting on both franchises (again, my presumptions of Madden 08 are based upon Madden 01-07).

Tried this out tonight. I wouldn't say it's terrible, but it is not as fun as NFL 2K5 for me. I hate the kicking and I haven't figured out the whole speed burst thing.

However, I have only played one game (just a little while ago) and my friend who owns the game left it here for me to play til Friday, so I will give it more time and maybe my opinion will change. I really *want* to like the game. I always preferred 2K to Madden before.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll do that.
I hate the kicking and I haven't figured out the whole speed burst thing.
The kicking game definitely needs some tweaks. I like the idea, but it's not quite right. Just hold the R-stick back to start the kicking animation, then when you see the kicker plant his non-kicking foot and start to bring the kicking foot back, quickly press up on the stick. It doesn't coincide with the actual kicking motions. Everytime I tried to time it with the leg sweeping through the ball, I'd be late. My kickoffs are still terrible, though.

As for the turbo, it's more a tap-tap, track and field style on the A-button to go faster. Holding the A charges your player for his other moves, like a charged "Y" will likely bowl over any defender.

Thanks Steve. I actually played 3 more games last night, starting a season. I got the kicking motion down, and figured out the speed burst after reading the manual.

I really like the game, but I'm not sure that I can justify spending $60 on it, especially with Madden coming out and the fact that I still do not own Forza. Also, I will likely finish a season before returning the game on Friday, and I haven't been able to get Live to work since I moved and switched ISPs in February.

One neat little thing, though- I was surprised to see Moreno Valley included in the list of selectable cities. Even stranger was that my hometown of Springfield wasn't, despite it being Illinois' capital and a city in 12 or so states.

just got home on lunch and had it sitting in my mailbox from gamefly. Just made my team and got the 5 gamerpoints, too bad I have to go back to work now before I get to play with them.
Was anyone gonna start a league or no?
I was talking to Richierich and he was going to start a league. I played him tonight; good experience. Randall Cunningham dominated Randall Cunningham. :)

Speaking of domination... I got a taste of the "sneaky side" of the CPU player tonight... Ken Stabler was going 8 for 8 in a bone-crushing drive that saw most of my DB's and such get burned badly... though they played respectably in the first half. :) Thank goodness I had Elway and Earl Campbell. :) Otherwise I'd have lost....

It's a fun game... it really is.
I was talking to Richierich and he was going to start a league. I played him tonight; good experience. Randall Cunningham dominated Randall Cunningham. :)
Good game Dan; however, I never said I was going to start a league. Don't have time for one, just want to play whenever anyone is on.

How much management is required for a league? If it doesn't reuqire much (any?) maintenance other than people playing, I'd be willing to set it up.

Who'd be interested?

After a few games online, (I lost all 3 :whistle2:( ) I have to say that I enjoy the game, I am still getting madden and I imagine once madden comes out I willl stop playing this all together, but this game is pretty solid. I just wish I had the manual so I could learn some of the buttons. As of now I have no idea how to adjust my line backers or D-line. I don't know how to change coverage or tighten or loosen the coverage of my cornerbacks on the WR's. And How the hell do you put a player in motion on offense?

I imagine once I figure out how to do all those things I will like this game even more than I already do.

This reminds me, in the event that 2K Sports continues this series, I hope they have a more friendly pre-snap management system. Theirs is so incredibly clunky. EA seems quite convoluted at first, but having all the pre-snap adjustments a few button presses away with the overlay like they have in NCAA makes for a fuller gameplay experience.

thats all that is killing me right now, I like their use of audibles showing th eplay in the top corner, but all the other pre snap controls (hot route, motion, line adjustment) are all just garbage.
