Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God

I watched Tokyo Godfathers last night. I loved the movie. The adventures and interactions of the three main characters were a lot of fun. Also, each of the characters were great in their own way. If you liked Satoshi Kon's other movies, or if you want just a fun heartfelt movie, then you should definitely look into Tokyo Godfathers.

Ending spoilers:
The whole ending scene where the Hana, Miyuki, and Gin are chasing the woman who stole the baby was brilliant. The truck crashing into the building was insane—which reminds me of each of the random car crashes earlier in the movie. Also, I loved the scene where they stopped the lady from jumping. Hana jumping down and catching the baby was amazing and hilarious.

Since I got a Crunchyroll membership, I started watching Aoi Hana. I really like it so far, and I can't wait for more episodes to get released. If I had one word to describe it, I would say it is beautiful. The characters are cute, and the backgrounds look magnificient, since they have this painting-esque style. Also, the romance-y bits are wonderful.

You bought a CR membership? Ugh...

Kirin, I've watched up to episode 8 of Utena and it's not getting any better. When does the awesome kick in?

dub vs sub just depends on which i've seen first. once i hear the voice the first time, i get stuck thinking thats how they have to sound so anything else sounds wrong, even if the original voice is annoying.

Episode 9 is where the change in the tone of the show becomes more noticeable. If you're still not interested after that one, there's probably no hope for you. As a person, I mean.

I haven't paid for anything yet; I am still in the two week free trial. However, I am considering staying subscribed. Why is there something wrong with paying to watch shows when they first release, or paying to watch them in a larger resolution without ads?

Unlike some people I don't get my entertainment for free; I think piracy is fucked up (read: morally wrong).

Considering Crunchyroll got their start by stealing fansubs and constantly begging for donations to help them steal even more translations, I'm not sure how you can justify supporting them.

How about you support something worthwhile? Download the fansubs or Crunchy rips and put your money toward the DVDs. I fucking guarantee the anime industry would prefer that.

Just finished episode 11 of R.O.D. TV. It just reached an FMA-level of awesomeness. I didn't expect it to be this good, haha. I'm going to have the whole thing watched before the DVDs even get here :p.

Also, I highly recommend Time of Eve (on Crunchyroll) to anyone who hasn't seen it. There's nothing else like it, and it's one of my favorites.
I'm against crunchyroll because the shows are just online. I'd rather have them on DVD.
I would rather watch Aoi Hana on DVD as well, but that would be a long time before that ever came out over here—if it even gets licensed for a North American release.

Plus, I usually watch something on my computer while I am eating. Sometimes I watch Giant Bomb videos, and other times I watch anime that I can't watch on DVD. I am already up to date with the Giant Bomb stuff, so I decided to get caught up with Aoi Hana before episode four airs on Wednesday.

They are legitimate now though; plus they are dealing directly with the anime companies. Also, how can I do my part using your method when some shows don't even get licensed for release in North America?

I think all the shows crunchyroll has are licensed by them which means if they have it, there is no chance of a US DVD release. Correct me, if I'm wrong.

Please, stop watching anime for a little bit, please. You're going too fast. I'm slowly making my way through Princess Tutu to please KL (nah, jk, it's awesome, and the extras are some of the best i've ever seen).

I still don't get why people watch unfinished shows when they own things already finished and on DVD, but whatever. I could see myself doing that for VC, but i'll wait until it ends, and then find somewhere to fansub it i guess.

Also, to anyone who reads my blog, i just did one on video game music, and i already have my next one planned...let's just say there's a connection between the two....

This. A lot of dubs get close, but then there's always that one voice actor that shouldn't be. :headache:

LOL why? I guess I am going a bit fast, but I really don't feel like doing much else, heh. This is one of the last chances I'll have to watch anime without worrying about other crap for a while...

I dunno, I don't mind watching unfinished shows. I mean, I'm not going to sit and wait for all 800 episodes of Bleach to come out before I watch them am I? It's the same for any other show. It's just like watching your favorite show on cable TV weekly. Also, it forces me to pace myself and not to blow through it all, haha. Fansubs are awesome.

Whether or not I have the show in my collection does not influence one way or another which order I feel I should watch it in. I just watch whatever I feel like watching at the time. If it's good, it will be in my collection (eventually, if it isn't already). The reason I'm like this is because I used to not buy ANY anime; I torrented almost everything because I was 14-15 years old and didn't give a crap. Obviously, that's not the case anymore. Still, the goal here is enjoyment. I don't enjoy watching something more just because I own it. =P

(also, tehweenzer, I'm the one that said that originally, heh)

I was kidding, don't stop ;).

I understand what you mean, especially considering i watched 24 and Dollhouse (ugh) every week, but it's not as good. I guess idk much about currently airing shows in japan so i'm not in a rush (other than VC and MoHS2) to watch them.

Speaking of extremely long series', anyone think it's worth it to try Case Closed? It keeps coming up, and i've been curious about it since people talk about it as worse (a lot worse) Death Note, andin case it wasn't clear, i

Case Closed was my first anime, so I'm a bit partial towards it, haha. Sure, give it a shot. You really don't have to see ALL of it. It's just a bunch of separate cases, really, with a very slight overarching plot. Also, it's one of the few shows that I watch the dub for, even though they changed the names of the characters (since that's how I first saw it on Adult Swim hehe). I noticed that pretty much every single one of the main voice actors in Case Closed was also in Beck at some point, haha. Didn't bug me too much though.

Also, sorry, I edit my posts way more than necessary. OCD when it comes to that sometimes.

Yeah, I liked Case Closed. And yeah, Prarie is right. Just watch the first few episodes since they put everything in place, then after that you can pretty much watch any episodes.

Thanks for providing substance and reason to that post.

I know that some anime companies like Bandia and Viz allow CR to stream their content. But, the press releases about other things always mentions licensing. Can one company have the license to stream while another company has the DVD licensing?

My brother decided to sign up for Netflix and told me to look through the list.

THEY HAVE 5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND!

Any chance i can tell Netflix i "lost it" >.>.

Of course they do. That is how I saw the movie. I thought you didn't like movies anyway, so why are you getting so excited?

I hope you are joking with that last bit there.

Kinda embarrassing, but my review of Genshiken was read on Rightstuf's podcast (AnimeToday). It was just like one of my forum posts here (which is to say, pretty bad, haha). Still, I thought it was kinda cool that they actually picked it though. They must not get many reviews. =P

Seen the first 14 eps of R.O.D. TV now. It's great... don't know why it's not more popular.

Just because i said i prefer TV Shows over movies, that doesn't mean that i don't like them. *sigh*

Also, it was meant to be a "Is he joking?" sort of thing. I like to see how people respond. Except you, of course.

Well, you did give Spirited Away a six, so that means either you have no soul, or you just hate movies in general.

It's in my top five, which should be all the validation it needs. :D

I'm teetering dangerously close to purchasing Kanon today. Somebody, put me over the edge.
Well, you did give Spirited Away a six, so that means either you have no soul, or you just hate movies in general.
Or that it just wasn't that great a movie?

Reminds me though, i've never seen a very good anime film. I guess Pixar has stolen my heart (even if it's not anime).

If you like Air, you'll like Kanon. Stop using us as a means to justify your purchase, you'll only end up with a three-page essay from Razzuel on why you should buy it.

If you still have regrets, ....well, you won't. Go buy it :p.

Buy Kanon. Now! Wait, you said you wanted someone to push you over the edge; I guess if it is coming from me you are taking a few steps back from the edge.

Seriously though, if you liked Air, then you are going to like Kanon.

Why would I spend that much time writing something, when it's obvious no one cares about my opinion. Also, you have no place to talk, Mr. Kanon-is-getting-boring.

Spirited Away wasn't that great of a movie? Are you sure about that? Spirited Away is one of the best movies—even outside the realm of anime.

Sorry, but Pixar pales in comparison to anything Studio Ghibli has made. I was right; you have no soul.
You have so much animu, but you don't have Kanon? Aww, come on now.
I try not to pay full price for anything. Anyways, problem solved!
Sorry, but Pixar pales in comparison to anything Studio Ghibli has made. I was right; you have no soul.
Ehh~, debatable. Ghibli probably has a slightly worse ratio of good-to-bad films, but both studios are generally very, very good at what they do.

Oh, Ghibli. I don't care if your Disney shit's made in Japan; I'm still not watching it.

/me only likes anime, unfortunately ;_;

The meeting of Goku and Yajirobe in Dragon Ball always confuses me when they say "breaktas" instead of "breakfast" and it bugs the hell out of me.

How's that Dragonball Kai series going anyways? I haven't heard much after the inital talk about how they cut a lot of the filler out. Are they still on Namek?

I would think they'd be on Namek by now, at least Bulma, Gohan and Kurrin.

I haven't been following it as much as I should have been. They cut out a lot of Gohan's training, and that was one of my favorite parts of the series.

Nope. In the latest episode, Gohan
transformed into the giant monkey in the fight against Vegeta and had his tail cut off again
.

Are you serious? I would have thought they'd be past that by now.

I'm all for new Dragon Ball, but Kai is not shaping up to be what I hoped. I would have liked them to just re-animate the series in the style of the Jump special, instead of just tracing over the old animation cells. It's not like they can't afford it; Dragon Ball is pretty much a guaranteed cash cow. It's consistently second or third in the ratings, and that's saying a lot for a show that's around 25 years old.
Just to throw in my 2 cents, I don't think Studio Ghibli's movies are that amazing either.
I really only liked Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, but I will see Ponyo in theaters, just so I can say I did.

Wait, Dragonball Kai is a revision of the series minus the filler? Really now.....hmmm, interesting....

I don't know why Spirited Away is such an amazing movie, it was just another Disney-esque movie with weird creatures. It just wasn't that interesting. I will, like you, see Ponyo just so i can say I did, but apparently it's not that great (judging from ANN, anyway)

Why bother seeing a movie just to say that you did? If y'all aren't interested, then don't go.

If you are interested, stop playing off this "I'm going just to say I did" bullshit. :whistle2:?

^^This. I mean, I haven't seen all of Miyazaki's movies because the ones I did see didn't interest me. I'm not going to force myself through them just because he's apparantly anime movie god.

Sorry, that's not what i meant. I'm going to see it since i don't know exactly how i'm going to react to it, although i guess i'm going in with low expectations. It looks like a movie for 3-year olds ;).

On the other hand, so do Pixar movies, and they're awesome, so....i don't think i had a point, actually.

Anyone know anything about Happy Lesson? I got the original series from a lowball sale, and there's apparently 3 OVA's and a second season, but i can't seem to find 2 of the OVA's or the second season localized. Maybe it wasn't? Is it a series worth continuing subbed?
