Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God
Anybody have any great anime comedies to recommend? I just finished watching Ouran Host Club and it was pretty neat. I also recently started watching Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. It has an art style unlike any that I've seen before.
Azumanga Daioh - the be-all, end-all of anime comedies. Also, Jubei-chan.

I found a great conversion program, so ive been watching a lot of anime on my PMP at work. Yesterday I finished Gurren Lagann, which really surprised me. I wasnt quite sure if I was going to be able to keep watching after
Kamina died
but I forced myself through and I actually really like it more and more once I figured out it was a parody and not supposed to be taken seriously.

At work im up to episode 13 of Higurashi. The whole restart effect is kinda annoying (i'd much rather have the same stories just with different characters) but the show always gives me a really creepy disturbed feeling when I watch it (other than the regular creepy feeling I get when i'm watching a show full of loli's at work).

I'll probably finish Higurashi tomorrow afternoon, after that it'll either be Claymore, Lucky Star, Ouran Host Club, or Romeo X Juliet. I'm not expecting too much out of Romeo X Juliet, I just need something that I can have playing at work and not have to pay too much attn to whats happening on the screen.

champloo needs another season or something wasnt too happy with how it ended. that episode
where they found the fake money
is still one of my favorites. someone mentioned the girl who leapt through space or time or something.i know theress a movie and then ive seen a series that has kind of the same title but not really. are these 2 things connected?

I finished the first season of Ah! My Goddess today. I don't know whether it's nostalgia or what (because I started watching it in 2005 or whenever it came out), but I liked it. It's not like the greatest show or anything story-wise, but it's good lighthearted entertainment. Also, I'm a fan of the music, including the Irish-feeling OP and the EDs.

Could you all use spoiler tags when talking about Champloo please (even if it's minor, it still annoys me, sorry).

Also, you guys ever had someone walk in the room during a critical moment of a show/movie/whatever? That happens to me like every time. I can almost count on it these days. Happened on the last episode of Elfen Lied and AMG for me (yeah, that's 2 in a row). So annoying.

No. Not at all. They just chose that name to get more attention, IIRC.

Yep, not related at all.

I just noticed your PSN name, :applause:

I HATE WHEN THAT fuckING HAPPENS!

Death Note Spoiler:
IT HAPPENED WHEN L fuckING DIED!!!!!

I decided for whatever reason to pickup Cowboy Bebop once again. I put it on hold after 8 episodes since i was getting bored, and i can see why. The episodic thing really turns me off. However,

Episode 10 when Jet goes to visit his girlfriend was easily the best episode yet, as it explores Jet's past and is very emotional. The episode after that, when there's a "monster" on the Bebop, is also very cool and interesting. I guess my problem with CB lies in the fact that i hate when they introduce a new world and set of characters only to end the story arc in one episode. I'll keep watching for now, and see if i continue to like it. I'm up to 13 currently.

Finished up Suzuka today. I was an OK show. It has a bit too much "OMG, DRAMA" for my tastes, but it's not so bad considering I only payed $15 for the whole series.

As for Champloo. I could never really get into it from the bits and pieces that I saw.

Also, for whatever reason, I have the strong urge to purchase tenchi stuff. Damn nostalgia, doesn't realize I'm damn near broke.

thanks for the info. ill stick with the movie then since ive heard good things about it.

I started watching Cowboy Bebop. It's probably something that I should've watched years ago. I remember back when I went to Otakon the first time, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun were the big anime of that year.

School Rumble :)

Well, Amazon just took their $11 for the FMA Premium OVA's. At a total time of 35 minutes, it's a pretty big ripoff, but i'll buy anything with an FMA label on it. I'm looking forward to watching them since they look very good, and after TSRI's sale $11 doesn't seem like too much ;).

Speaking of FMA, anyone watched the sequel? Or Valkyira Chronicles? Or Haruhi 2? I'll probably wait for the dubs of those three (except maybe VC), but i just want to see how they're coming along. Unbelieveable? Disappointing? Standard?

(As an aside, i found out that FMA's OP is by Yui, which made the wait about 10x harder)

i started eureka 7 last night. thus far it's very predictable, but i'm hoping the praise i heard around here isn't unfounded.

i'll just go on record saying champloo bored me.

The only thing I didn't like about FMA Brotherhood was the first episode, only because it didn't really explain anything. It assumed that you knew the characters and basic plot. Not a problem for me, but I can see how it would be for a first time watcher.

Other than that, it's pretty great. It's everything I wished Dragon Ball Kai was.

Haruhi 2 has had the same episode for 7 episodes in a row so far. Fans are disappointed, to say the least. I'd suggest a try-before-you-buy in this case, though as a loyal Haruhiist, I'll likely buy the LEs immediately upon availability in the U.S.

I'd heard a lot of controversy over the "Endless Eight" arc, but nobody ever told me what it actually was. Are you serious? They aired seven of the exact same episode!?!?!? Are they....insane....?

For some odd reason...actually, everything i do is odd. I started up Jyu-Oh-Sei i recently got from eBay. I don't remember anyone talking about it, but it's getting to be very good. The first few episodes, while very interesting and awesome, introduce the setting/world fairly badly. I can see why, since the world is absolutely insane and so there probably wasn't much of a good way to introduce everything, but it ends up just being a lot of one or two characters talking for 5-10 minutes at a time like a fucking manual. Still, the series is very interesting to say the least, and i managed 6 episodes in a row so far (disk 1). I could tell you about the Extras...if there were any....x.X

The art is nice, the dub isn't going to win any awards, but it's fine, and the story is fast-paced and very very good once you get started. Also, there are times when i blink and feel like i'm watching Eureka Seven, but that's probably just me.

It's not exactly the same. Think of the movie Groundhog Day.

Yakitate Japan or Azumanga Diaoh.

I'd love to see Yakitate Japan come over here legitimately, even if it was just a Japanese dub with English subs release.

To be fair, they (Kyon and company) wear different clothing and you see them visit different places (but the same events take place). Also, the camera angles are different but the essential content is the same. every. single. iteration.:bomb: If you've seen the 2nd episode, you've seen the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and (I suspect) the 9th one. Even worse, I also suspect that the 10th will actually solve it but the whole episode will play out the same as the previous 'Endless Eight' until the very end where Kyon might actually do something about it.:bomb: And to add insult to injury, KyoAni is selling the dvds at their full price at 2 episodes per dvd. Geez.

Same events 7 times in a row with minor differences. This was bug catching. I liked that pic of Yuki holding the giant beetle so I saved it.

So far I've been enjoying the season 2 of Spice and Wolf much more then Haruhi. I'm hoping for another plotline similar to the currency manipulation of the first season. They'res up to episode 3 and no economic-related story arc yet. If anyone hasn't seen Spice and Wolf you should at least check out the first episode. It is pretty good. I really like the new music too.

I need a new anime to watch. I finished watching the first season of digimon earlier this year (which was the last one I needed to watched, watched them in the order of season 2, 3, 4, 5, 1) and I'm watching Sailor Moon for nostalgia's sake, but it is pretty awful. That's all I really know in terms of anime (although Digimon Tamers is really, really good). I'm looking for something that is a bit light hearted and funny, but also a bit dark and really focuses on character development. Any suggestions?

I'm actually a fan of the first and third season of Digimon. I wish I could see them subbed. Sailor Moon is really good, in my opinion, as long as you're watching subbed.

check out ouran high school host club and planetes. samurai champlo is good too. id also suggest xxxholic but depending on wht youre into it may not be your cup of tea.

i was surprised how well kakashi gaiden turned out. didnt expect them to finish it in 2 episodes heres to hoping the itachi sauske arc doesnt take too long.

I miss Digimon... And Monster Rancher for that matter. They need to release box sets of those. Hell, they still need to release Rancher season 3 here! :bomb:

That doesn't sound too bad, but the point of Haruhi wasn't to watch it because it's bearable. I'll still buy the full collection since i'm in love with Haruhi, and i guess that's what they expect everyone will do. Oh well.
Just different packaging from what I understand. Buy both. It's that awesome.
Haha, I wouldn't say it's quite that awesome, but I like the cover art on the first one better. A blu-ray release of that would be sweet.

Got home from vacation today, so I got to open up my 2 boxes from TSRI. I'm really running out of room to put this crap now, haha.

They really do. The only Monster Rancher DVD available here is a crappy dollar store DVD that's dub-only. Not that I mind, I watched that show every day after school. Never played the games, though.
Haha, I wouldn't say it's quite that awesome, but I like the cover art on the first one better
The essence of anime release is the same actual case/dvd, just with the special slipcover on top of it.

Anyone pay attention to Reborn! here? I know someone else talked about it before, but I forgot who it was and don't know if they've kept up with it. It's the one manga that I read on a weekly basis. I decided to check out the latest episode of the anime earlier and saw that they were doing what I think is the first filler arc they've done. It's a little ridiculous though considering it pretty much negates the whole point of the real arc they're in the middle of. Although, I'll probably watch it because more Tsuna fighting is always welcome.

Serial Experiments Lain. Three words:

What. The. fuck.

Really wasn't my type of show; very abstract. I tried to get into it and read into what was happening, but in the end, I was still largely confused. Like I said before, the show seems to be weird just for the sake of being weird. Comes off as pretentious. Although there were some interesting/"aha" moments and concepts, I was bored throughout most of it and pretty much forced myself to finish the show after I had gotten past a certain point. I can sort of see the appeal to intellectual types that like to analyze everything, but it was just a bit much for me personally.

All that said, the opening song still rocks. Probably the best anime OP that I know of (and now one of my favorite songs/bands).

EDIT: Well, if the summary on Wikipedia is right, I actually understood a lot more than I thought I did. I definitely got the basic idea of what was going on in regards to the main plot; however, a lot of little details I couldn't quite make sense of. Either way, I just didn't find it all that interesting when I was watching. The concepts and social commentary were definitely interesting, but the show itself just wasn't for me.

I never knew about that DVD until it was too late.... Though I don't think they even released the whole thing on VHS. I only remember about 5 different tapes for it back in the day. Also, the games are fun. Monster Rancher 2 and MR Advance are probably the best, IMO.

I plan on picking one up. I really like the concept of producing monsters from CDs and DVDs. Much more novel than your standard Pokemon-esque fare.

Finished Baccano today. Man, that was a reaaaaallly good series. It is a huge shame that they left such an open plotline, but at least they had the decency to end it with "we should let everyone use their imaginations to figure out the rest" rather than just ending it straight up and letting on that there might be more.

But yea, Baccano is definitely gonna be the top of my must see recommendations for dvds to pick up. Should hold up pretty well til December when Monster finally gets a release.
Did you watch the OVAs?
The only OVA's im seeing (according to Wikipedia) are eps 14-16 which are included on the Funi DVD's. I did enjoy that part a bit, not quite as good as the events on the F.P. but it definitely made me glad they didnt end the series with those idiots Isaac & Miria spouting happy birthday (or whatever it was).

Graham Specter is a very interesting character. I did also want to see more between Claire & Ladd and of course the tease of Dallas Genoard escaping the cement led to more wants as well.

It looks like there are quite a few light novels as well that dig a bit further into it. The events that happen to Ennis & Firo between 1932 & 2002 sound quite interesting. Unfortunately I can only find the first 6 chapters of the 1st novel translated. Times like these I wish i could read japanese (hehe, im a poet).

The rewatchability of Baccano! is tremendous. One of the best shows to get on DVD.

I follow Reborn but only the anime. I'm on other stuff now though so I'm probably 5-10 eps behind.

I've given Eureka 7 my watching time based on people here. Surfing robots is retarded, but what anime is "about" isn't nearly as important as the interaction between the characters I guess. The "revelations" about the origins of Gecko State were definitely interesting and I'll keep watching. I'm 10 eps in so I guess that's 20% done.

I need a website to track what shows I'm watching and what eps I left off on.

I finished watching Gankutsuou and Sword of the Stranger. Gankutsuou was really good. The art style is amazing; I am not sure how to explain it in words, so if you have not seen it you should check it out. Also, the Count of Monte Cristo is an awesome character.

Sword of the Stranger was really good too. It had amazing fight scenes; plus the development of the two main characters over the course of the movie was great.

Fine! You want something different!?

I also finished Boogiepop Phantom the other day, however, I failed to mention it in the previous post because I didn't want another oh-look-how-big-this-post-is-I-am-too-lazy-to-read-it ordeal—also, it probably doesn't help that my name is attached to it.

Hmm, Boogiepop Phantom: fucking strange.

I think I need to read the novel that the anime was based on, and then after that watch the anime again because Boogiepop Phantom might be even weirder than Lain. The only thing about Boogiepop Phantom that I am sure about is that the sound design/music is excellent.
