Why, you didn't like the same characters anymore?
It's a three-fold issue... firstly, at some point you might just not want to look like a toy-collecting weirdo. You can't exactly pretend 'it's no big deal' when your space is littered with statues and figures with girls whose tops come off. It can become unappealing.
Secondly, cost. Figures are bloody expensive- good ones can go for several hundred dollars. It's not hard to be pining for a game system or needing to make a car payment and realizing a couple anime statues could've covered that easy.
Third, space. Quite simply, it gets tricky to balance figures, DVDs, systems, games, posters, wallscrolls, with things like chairs and other functional furniture. Since most merch is just decorative, it's easier to dump that than anything else.
Anyway- I buy merch, but not figures. I decided awhile ago I'd rather use my space for media than statues. I do collect shitajiki (pencil boards- plastic things you're supposed between notebook pages and on rough surfaces for easier writing). I keep them in scrapbooks, so storage is easy, and they aren't terribly expensive. Selection is really the tricker thing- there's tons online, but con pickings are slim. I also intend to start picking up prints at Artist Alley and keeping them in a portfolio- I really prefer the fanmade things to the offical stuff. Anyone can get a plushie of Kyo from Fruits Basket- how many people have a Ukrainian dyed egg?
