Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!
^ Wow I didn't know it was that bad. I read up on the mangaka and the general consensus is he's been battling illness. He supposedly made a statement recently that he will work on HxH as soon as possible, so at least he is still interested in the series. I'm going to wait for more development before investing in this series.
http://comipress.com/article/2007/02/11/1492 This site gives an idea of the scheduling from 98-06. And it's only gotten worse since then.

Well don't say we didnt warn you. Which is ashame since the later arc is much better. I just hope at this point it can have a better conclusion than Yu Yu Hakusho

In that link I posted, it mentions that he ended Yu Yu Hakusho the way he did because he wanted to stick it to the man. Ever since I think the Shonen Jump people have been too easy on him, which is the real cause of all the hiatuses. I doubt they're all related to illness.
Is he sick? I don't want him to die because it would make Naoko Takeuchi sad (the creator of sailor moon)
The reason they originally gave 13 years ago for Hunter x Hunter going on hiatus was due to illness.

And everyone should know who the creator of Sailor Moon is without you telling. =P I'm still super excited that the manga is being released starting in a few months. :D

Kekkaishi finished airing on Adult Swim a few weeks ago, meaning the entire series has been English dubbed. The first dvd set (E1-13) comes out June 21, the second set (E14-26) doesn't come out until Sept 26... wth? All the hard work is done. At this rate the full series won't be released until March 2012.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind this staggered release strategy? I skipped watching this series on AS since I prefer watching DVD's, now I wish I would have taped it. There is no point picking up the first set of episodes just to cliffhang a few months for the next set. I know other series do this as well (Bleach is a good example, Viz has yet to release the rest of S7 on DVD while S11 is currently airing on AS).

TV shows are often taped in their entirety before they air, then why don't they release the DVDs before the season is finished. Because then the ratings wouldn't be as good and there would be less money from advertisements.

Why don't they release the entire series at once? Well, because they're probably charging a fair amount of money for it and there are few people who will plunk down the large chunk of change for the entire series in one go. So they release part of it now and then wait for people to make money before releasing more.

Also, with something like Bleach, it's still airing in Japan, so Viz doesn't really want to catch up to it.

Those are my thoughts anyway.

I was thinking the same thing about tv airing. The license holder (in this case Viz) probably makes a deal with the station (in this case Adult Swim) to slow down DVD production so that the tv airing can get more viewers. This is similar to the gap between a movie appearing in theaters and being distributed on DVD (of course that gap is closing with the latest VOD trend).

I still don't get why they don't release the whole series at once rather than a set every few months. Those who can't afford the whole series can just buy what they can when they can. Those who want to buy the whole series can do it without having to wait in the middle of a story. Total number of sales should be the same, just possible to get more sales quicker.

In the case of a series being unpopular though there is a chance for a bigger loss, maybe that's the reasoning...

Sucks that you'll have to wait so long to see the entire series on DVD. I think they're re-airing it, though, as my DVR recorded the 1st episode last weekend. So you might want to watch it on AS.
PSN has all 12 episodes of High School of the Dead for 99 cent each. Should I buy them all?
YES!

Thanks for the tip!
Just picked up Bubblegum Crisis 2040 Perfect Collection and Record of Lodoss War complete.
What used bin did you pull those out of? Also great choice of animes. Also, is HSOTD in English or japanese?
Finally finished watching Trigun and School Rumble. Might watch Baccano or Eden of the East next.
I just started rewatching Trigun. It's one of the only series where I enjoyed the dub more than the original language track (which was still quite good).

What'd ya think of School Rumble?

I bought them at a used bookstore in North Carolina called Ed McKays. They have four stores, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Raleigh and Fayetteville. They sell used books, cds, vinyl, vhs and dvds.

I went ahead and downloaded them. I've heard good things about this anime, and for $11.88 for the whole series, you cannot beat that price. Especially the boxset will be like $35-40 when it releases this month.

I thought it was really funny and enjoyable, with cool characters.

I finished watching Eden of the east and the king of eden today. I also started watching Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time.

Finished the first set of Revolutionary Girl Utena over the weekend (on that note did anyone else get theirs early?). Enjoyed it a lot more then I thought I would , especially the music. Can't wait for the next set to come out.

Glad to hear it! The first arc is, in my opinion, the weakest part of the show, so you have a lot to look forward to. I think the final set, in particular, is going to blow your mind in the best of ways.

I finished High school of the dead and it was great. I had to watch it in Japanese with English subtitles though, which I don't like doing. But still, I enjoyed it. I have to watch it in English.

Any recommendations to similar anime? I liked the art, graphics and visuals of this particular anime.

Watched all of Cromartie High. I really wound up digging this show more than I thought I would. Mechazawa's smooth voice instantly won me over (no I don't watch dubs).

I hear there's a live action version which seems so impossible...

Dub for that show was way better than the subs.Definitely look into the manga if you really enjoyed the show.

I haven't posted here in like a year, but I just watched Summer Wars. I saw a few rave reviews here on CAG which got me interested. It didn't disappoint. Parts of it seemed a bit cliched (for an anime), but it really didn't matter since it was so well done.

I watched a couple mins of the dub. We'll just have to agree to disagree here.

I just want to say the latest issue of Naruto is just fraking awesome but I am not surprised because its been like that for a couple weeks now. I just hope they dont do what they did to Bleach and ruin it.

Caught up on Shinji Ikari Raising Project (currently 8 volumes in US, 11 in Japan). This has been a fun read. For those unfamiliar with this manga, it is based on part of the ending of the Evangelion TV series where
Shinji gets a glimpse at an alternate reality where the world is pretty similar to ours rather than everyone dies and kids take part in bloody giant robot vs monster fights.
There are no Evangelion units (the term "Evangelion" hasn't even appeared so far), no monsters to fight, no tragedy, and no depressing events. This is a slice-of-life romantic comedy based on Evangelion characters. If you've never seen/read the original Evangelion series then this manga will not appeal to you as it contains fairly common scenarios of the genre; however, fans of the series will enjoy seeing their favorite characters interacting in a very different environment.

Finished up Time of Eve, Kurau, and Bakemonogatari in the past 2 nights. Liked all of them quite a bit (Time of Eve is one of my all-time favorites).

Yeah, I hear you on that. I wouldn't mind a second season. :D They sort of left the story open for one, too.
I would have liked to have seen more interaction between the main character and Sammy.

Just re-watched the (most of) the first 7 episodes of Sora No Manimani (because I haven't seen them in year) and 2 more after that which I hadn't seen before. Favorite romantic comedy anime that I've seen so far. You could compare it to School Rumble, except it's less bizarre, and I just find it to be more genuine and overall just more entertaining. Not too weird, cool topic (astronomy club), and likable characters. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't been licensed by now, but I'm not complaining since the fansub group that worked on it (AnimeOne) did a fantastic job, and it's HD-quality.
The show in general is overpriced, its about 60 bucks just for one season.
Sixty dollars for a twenty something episode season is fine, sixty-five for a four episode OVA is an entirely different story.

No the average price for a 26 episode box set is usually around 30-40 dollars,60 is charging a little too much.

Your problem is that you're comparing anime that's being released today to anime that was released over 5 years ago. Sure, nowadays box sets are cheap, but 5 years ago they were $80-100.

I remember way back when DVD was somewhat new and Viz released Fushigi Yugi in two 26 episode boxsets that were $200 each. Kenshin was also released around this time in boxsets that were over $100 and they later reissued them for under $100, but never as cheap as anime is today.

I finished up Last Exile in 3 days. A lot of it reminded me of Eureka Seven, although slightly more "realistic"/serious. Unfortunately, most of the characters never really get fleshed out to their full potential, and much is left up to the viewer's interpretation (especially in terms of different characters' relationships with each other). The aerial battles are pretty sweet though, and I liked a lot of the character development that I saw (again though, I wish there was more!). Anyway, overall, I thought it was a pretty great series. :p My rating: 7.5/10

Funny I just got done throwing out the mousepad or whatever the hell that thing was from the Last Exile dvd set. I liked Last Exile at the time but it was missing something I couldn't quite place that just kept it from being truly great. Still when that woman got choked out I almost clapped

Haha, I could have taken that off your hands. xP Yeah, I agree, there was a little "something" missing for me too, although I still was entertained throughout.
yeah, I was pretty glad that Alex accomplished his goal before dying.

Watched the first 8 episodes of Eden of the East today. Really digging it. Very likable characters and a great opening and ending.

Since I'm going to Las Vegas in a few weeks, I decided to try watching Kaiji for fun. It's basically about a man who is trying to gamble to get his debts paid off. After 5 episodes (the first "arc," you could say), I think I'm giving it up. While there is some clever logic behind the decisions Kaiji makes, most of the other characters just seem retarded and boring. IMO. I can't believe how overrated this series is on MAL. Shame because it had a very interesting concept too. Oh well.

I've also been watching a lot of Samurai Champloo. I had seen about half the series before, but I had forgotten most of it so I decided to watch it from the beginning. One aspect of the show that stands out in particular is its very modern sense of humor. The action/animation is fluid and stylized. The soundtrack is also the best of any anime series ever created, in my opinion (I have been a Nujabes fan for years--even before I got into the show). It's mostly an episodic series, with an overarching storyline; the individual plots in each episode are very interesting and unique. It's just all-around awesome. I'm even watching the English dub because the voice acting is just plain great. Can't recommend it highly enough.

i liked it too, but a heads up...you're going to need BOTH movies to get any sort of ending

Has anyone else been reading Franken Fran lately?
I think Katsuhisa is running out of ideas, and he's overusing the Sentinels a bit and hasn't really given us anything good since Chapter 38.

I am debating on High School of the Dead, but likely I'll buy later.

I've been re-watching Utena with my boyfriend and another friend of ours over the last week or so, and they're loving the heck out of it, which makes me super-happy. 11 episodes to go! If they think it's good now, the rest is going to blow their minds in the best of ways.

Also, hooray for you guys watching Eden of the East.
Steins;Gate finale tomorrow!
Uh, haha, last week's episode was the halfway point; there are still twelve episodes left.
