Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Hunter x Hunter is starting back up in August in Japan after being on hiatus since June 2010. I wonder how long it'll run before the next hiatus.
I watched the 1st episode of Durarara on Adult Swim over the weekend and the show certainly seems promising.
Also watching it, but I've already seen it on Crunchyroll. Dub is good for the most part, some of the "modernizing" of the dialog to make it "cooler" comes off a bit weird and I don't like the new Simon at all, but so far no complaints.

X-Men and Wolverine (the anime's) are debuting on G4 next month too.

So Day 0 of Anime Expo is over. The lines were incredibly brutal; you'd think it would be more organized.

The best thing I saw was someone cosplaying as Celty from Durarara. She was pretty amazing. Here's a picture of her:

I just saw 3 episodes of Birdy the Mighty 02 and it has been just as enjoyable as the first season so far.

Still enjoying yourself at AX despite the lines Razz?

Birdy the Mighty: Decode was a wonderful surprise for me when I first watched it. I'm really anxious for a cheaper collection to be released so I can finally purchase it.

I finished Samurai Champloo last night. Now one of my top 5 shows.
I also started on Kino's Journey, which has been just awesome so far.

Also let us know how the karaoke goes at AnimeExpo, Razzuel.

Alright, so Day 1 is finally over. I can't wait to go to sleep, haha.

I went to the opening ceremony, the Kalafina panel, exhibit hall, karaoke, the Nirgilis concert, and a showing of High School of the Dead that was followed by a Maon Kurosaki concert.

The Kalafina panel wasn't that great; nothing remarkable happened, and I'm basically only interested in getting my album signed. They're supposed to announce the autograph sessions during these guest panels, but Anime Expo isn't very organized, so it doesn't seem necessary if I only want an autograph.

Exhibit Hall is going to kill me, if it hasn't already. Not only is it a nightmare to traverse, but there's way too much shit to buy. I already think I've done too much damage to my wallet, haha.

My feet hurt like hell, but it's a lot of fun, and seeing all the different cosplayers is really interesting. Tomorrow should be great, since there's three concerts and the premiere of Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing.
Still enjoying yourself at AX despite the lines Razz?
The whole thing is about waiting in lines, haha.
Also let us know how the karaoke goes at AnimeExpo, Razzuel.
I was pretty nervous, but after actually performing, it was really fun. I wish I hadn't zoned out and forgot a verse, haha. I didn't make it to the semi-finals and I'm betting that's why.
Birdy the Mighty: Decode was a wonderful surprise for me when I first watched it. Namely because the cover art for the show is just birdy there with that weird looking suit.

I'm in the same boat as you, waiting for a collection to come out at a decent price, because this show is definitely worthy of being in my collection.

Oh yeah, I was curious if anyone here knows if Funimation is going to go back to using better art boxes (like they used to a few years ago)? I remember filling out a survey for them and one of the questions was about the packaging.

Where have you been, haha? Funimation has already gone back to using chipboard boxes.

That was actually pretty inconvenient; I had to walk around the outside of the convention center to get back to exhibit hall after the Vic concert.

I haven't bought any anime in a while...

Funimation started using chipboard boxes at the beginning of this year. I can't remember if they are slighty more expensive, but Funimation is selling the chipboard boxes as a limited edition first, and then when those sell out, they switch back to the thin cardboard cases. I think Black Butler and The Sacred Blacksmith were the first to get this treatment.
I also started on Kino's Journey, which has been just awesome so far.
I'm glad to hear it when people enjoy this show. It's one of the few episodic shows I genuinely love for its deliberate pace.
The whole thing is about waiting in lines, haha.
So true! I spent a total of ~3 hours waiting in different lines to get an autograph from Miyuki Sawashiro
(Saeko from Highschool of the Dead; Shinku from Rozen Maiden; Ayane from Kimi ni Todoke). Way worth it.

Incidentally, the K-ON! mini-concert was surprisingly good. The english voice actresses didn't actually play the instruments, but they did sing all of the songs in Japanese, which was unexpected.

So i watched all of kenichi in about 2 days. was awsome , reminded me of DBZ hehe. honestly never had an animie marathon like that in a while, usally just do about 1 or 2 ep at a time.

i also watched claymore. was slow for me to get into so slow that i got pissed off the girl died in teh flashback but then i remembered off wait it was a flashback hehe. then it really picked up for me and iw atched the rest in afew days! was turning out to be vary good but then was vary let down by the ending. =p

right now im watching some boob anime on netflicks. some cat girl chops men to bits and is topless half the anime. pretty cool lol. :)

I can honestly say I have no idea where Claymore (manga) is going anymore, every time the story sort of settles down to a clear goal it gets ramped back up again.

I finished up Birdy the Mighty 02 yesterday and it was awesome. It was just as good as the first season, and apparently there is another season coming out in the next year or so. Can't wait for that.

If you enjoy anime at all then Birdy should be on your watch list.

Also, thanks for the info regarding the art boxes, Razz.

Well, I'm finally home. I was really busy and tired, so I wasn't able to make any other lengthy posts about Anime Expo.

Day 2 was definitely the busiest, since it was Saturday, and it was the day of the Miku concert. I really enjoyed the Miku concert — I even bought the first PSP game — but the best event that day — and really of the trip — was the Kalafina concert. They didn't play as many songs as I would have liked, but they did play Sprinter, and that's my favorite Kalafina song — it was amazing!

Day 3 was amazing too, since I was able to get my Kalafina album, Seventh Heaven, signed! Hikaru, Keiko, and Wakana each signed the inside cover of the album, and I got to shake their hands. I loved it, haha. The other great thing about Day 3 was the Maon Kurosaki concert, but it actually wasn't as good as her free mini-concert that she held on the night of the first day, haha — she even played less songs, unfortunately.

Day 4 was me mostly just going around looking for cosplayers so I could take their picture.

It was an awesome trip, and I plan on going back again next year. However, I think I'm gonna buy a premier ticket next year so I don't have to wait as long in those monstrous lines.

That's what usually happens with most shonen's.

Just finished watching Soul Eater which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But the anime leaves so many unanswered questions. From what I heard half way through the manga the story is entirely different.

yeah soul eater is a bit strange but not too bad. i kinda felt that 3 animes each about the main characters with more story and time to flesh each on out would be better.

Both PSP games rock. I've owned them for a while. I bought the 2nd one at Katsucon last year, even if I paid $70.

Anyone in the anime thread plan to go to Otakon this year? I already registered and ready to go. My entire cosplay costume should arrive soon.

I kinda went crazy when GoHastings had their 10% off+ free shipping code last week. Finally got the last of the dvds today and decided to gather them all up and see how much I actually bought. I think my criteria was to buy anything I was ever interested in and they had a complete set of. Seems like $91.60 well spent. Now only to figure out which to watch first after completing Full Metal Alchemist.

Thats one huge stack you have there :p.Makes me wish I wasn't so backlogged I'd go buy a bunch like that.To be honest though I try to avoid the 1 disc per a case volumes as I'm starting to worry more about shelf space these days.

I know how you feel after spending over $600 on anime on Amazon in the span of 5 months. It gets to a point where you start to run out of room & start putting two layers of cases on the shelves.

I still grab the individual volumes versions of shows from time to time though. Mostly due to the fact that I'm saving $10-$50 buying them instead of the box set/thin pak versions. Although it's usually OOP stuff that this happens with.

Finished Rurouni Kenshin and most of the OVAs this morning.
Then I spent the rest of the day on High School of the Dead.
Tomorrow morning I start Welcome to the NHK.
After I finish that, Gurren Lagann.

Aren't weekends great? :D

Yeah, shelf space is definitely a concern for me as well but I couldn't help how much I'd be saving by buying the older 1 disc versions. I was averaging $1.29 a disc in my haul, which was waaaayyy cheaper then buying the used collection versions.
Not many guys cosplayed?
No, I'd say it was about even across both genders, but I might be a little biased towards the ladies. ;)
Thanks for sharing. Must be fun to be surrounded by fans.
Yeah, it was a ton of fun.
Now I understand its a B movie type show, but that's way too over top.
You do understand that you are talking about a zombie anime, right? Regardless you should check it out, its not that long of a series and it does fill that zombie itch that has been going around.

I really don't understand everyone's obsession with zombies. Maybe I'm just weird.

Anyway, just finished Azumanga Daioh last night. I actually had started it like 2 years ago, but finally got back to watching it recently. I remember feeling like it started out slow, but by the time you get to the end of the series, you really get to know the characters, which makes it all more meaningful/hilarious. It ended up being really, really good; I liked it a lot more than I initially thought I would.

I uploaded some more pictures from my trip, if anyone cares. They're pictures of the convention center, my purchases, cosplay (which most of you guys have probably already seen), and miscellaneous stuff like the hotel and other scenic things. Photobucket sucks with the way its albums work, but it's the best free service out there, so eh. When you go to the page, use the area on the right hand side labeled sub-albums, since I grouped all my pictures into different categories (sub-albums).

Anime Expo 2011 Pictures

On the anime front, I'm surprised Kirin hasn't posted anything about Mawaru Penguindrum. It's written and directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, the director of Utena, and he hasn't worked on a show in like a decade, so this is pretty huge that he's working on a new show.

As for what I thought of the first episode, it was interesting. It has Ikuhara written all over it, from its magical girls, pretty boys, artistic style, and sexual impulses and perversions. I'm glad it's penned for 24 episodes, so it should get pretty crazy.

I'll probably check the manga out first, which is probably better since manga's are usually better 90% of the time than the anime adaptation's.

If you can't tolerate the anime's obsession with boobs and crotch-shots, then you won't feel any differently if you choose the manga instead, since the manga has those same obsessions.

As long as its not the focal point of the manga then I really don't mind fanservice, just as long as it doesn't get really stupid.

Yeah, I've been pretty busy with my personal and professional life lately, and haven't had as much time to post much outside of quick responses using my iPhone. The first episode of Penguindrum certainly piqued my interest, and I'm eager to see more. The show really certified all the more that Ikuhara is a phenomenal director.

I'd imagine it would be crazier in the manga. I do want to check out both eventually though. I just haven't had the money or time to invest in it. Hopefully I can get a crazy deal on the Blurays eventually.

Why the hell am I still reading Bleach? The new arc is easily as bad as any of the fillers for the anime.

I finished Sengoku Basara Samurai Kings the other night. I thought it was good (8/10 type for me), but really just felt like I was watching an anime of battles I played (through story mode) instead of playing the game.

Since I received K-ON! Vol. 2, I'm watching that next.

I'll admit I never got into Manga because I didn't read comics and I prefer watching than reading. But since work can get pretty boring at times, I decided to start reading some manga. Picked up Eureka Seven. Already had some Code Geass from DVDs I bought. Looking to get some more manga.

Been reading a bunch of Viz titles as of late.
Toriko - Read first 2 volumes. Enjoyable , reminds me of One Piece in its wackiness , curious to see how it continues though.
Arata : The Legend - Read first 2 volumes , started a bit slow but liking it and really want to see where it goes.
Bakuman - Only read first volume but definitely want to read more. Obvious that its written by the same guys from Death Note not only in art style but writing style too (very wordy at times).
Hyde and Closer - Read first 2 volumes. Enjoyable , feels a bit like Shaman King , at least thats where I feel the story is headed.
Rin-ne - Read first volume , slow and kinda boring. Somewhat interested in where its going , but knowing how the rest of her stories end up it probably has a ways to go.
Kekkaishi - Read first 2 volumes , only watched bits and pieces when it was on Adult Swim. Knowing somewhat where the story is going has helped since its been kinda slow to start but enjoyable.

Thanks for sharing them. I didn't see that Ika Musume cosplay while I was there, so I'm glad you managed to snag a photo.

Azumanga Daioh is my favorite show of all time. Not just anime, mind you. I think it's a show that would resonate well with anyone who finished high school.
