Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
~ (symbol beside the "1" on standard US keyboards) are iPhone 6/6+ optimized. Note that apps that are iPhone 6/6+ optimized are by default iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Couple things worth sharing:

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies has launched on the app store. It is free but I assume like the others it has IAPs.

http://appshopper.com/games/phoenix-wright-ace-attorney-%E2%80%93-dual-destinies

The fantastic tabletop games turned digital Agricola (http://appshopper.com/games/agricola) and Lords of Waterdeep (http://appshopper.com/games/lords-of-waterdeep) (As featured on the popular web series TableTop) are both on sale.

Based on the hit cartoon from YEARS ago the game PowderPuff Girls: Defenders of Townsville is on sale too. No comment on whether the game is actually any good.

http://appshopper.com/games/powerpuff-girls-defenders-of-townsville

Lastly, although not on sale, the next game in the popular Sentinel series of Tower Defense games, Sentinel 4: Dark Star, just launched

This is because playdek released ascension for android, they have these other sales as well:

• Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer – Free

o Return of the Fallen – $.99

o Storm of Souls – $.99

o Immortal Heroes – $.99

o Rise of Vigil — $2.99

• Summoner Wars: “Nine Faction Bundle” – $3.99

• Lords of Waterdeep –$3.99
o Undermountain — $.99

o Scoundrels of Skullport — $.99

• Agricola- $3.99

o Agricola Deck I — $.99

o Agricola Deck K – $.99

The sale will run through 8/17/14.

So having played through some of the demos I bought the summoner wars IAP. Anyone have any say on ascension? Im sort of torn. I played through the tutorial and it seemed ok, but it seemed fairly random without much strategy. I.E. you aim for basically one of 3 types of hands and just play everything you can all the time and then use up your points on the most expensive cards while defeating what you can to get the most honor each round. There didnt seem much to it, so I feel like Im missing something

I love Ascension. I own every expansion but the newest one.

I was just coming here to post this. I play this on PC on occasion and it will be nice to be able to play it on my iPad! Word of advice hit up kids that are into Pokemon but are too young to have an account to play this digital game. They'll likely have (or will get) codes that you can redeem in the game to unlock booster packs and more.

Does anybody know if there are any iTunes Gift Cards on sale anywhere?  I just spent all of the currency in my account on the Playdek games currently on sale (Lords of Waterdeep looks amazing).

I was thinking that I may purchase some of the Cartoon Network games while they are on sale.  Does anybody recommend any of them?  I like the Adventure Time and Regular Show franchises, but mostly, I would just like to buy games that actually have good gameplay.  I just wish Castle Doombad was on sale too.

Ben 10 Slammers, $1.99 → 99¢

Best Park In the Universe - Regular Show, $2.99 → 99¢

Calling All Mixels, $3.99 → 99¢

Card Wars - Adventure Time, $3.99 → 99¢

CN Superstar Soccer, $2.99 → 99¢

Fionna Fights - Adventure Time, 99¢

Gem Bound - Steven Universe, 99¢

Ghost Toasters - Regular Show, $2.99 → 99¢

Globlins, $1.99 → 99¢

Jumping Finn Turbo - Adventure Time, 99¢

Mutant Fridge Mayhem - Gumball, 99¢

Powerpuff Girls: Defenders of Townsville, $3.99 → 99¢

Ride 'em Rigby - Regular Show, 99¢

Rock Bandits - Adventure Time, $1.99 → 99¢

Ski Safari: Adventure Time, 99¢

The Great Prank War, $2.99 → 99¢

Wrath of Psychobos - Ben 10 Omniverse, $2.99 → 99¢

I'm a big fan of Adventure Time and played the heck out of Ski Safari AT to complete all of its challenges and unlock (almost) everything. $.99 is not a sale price for this though, so if you're light on iTunes credit you can pick this up later. I'm glad to finally get Card Wars. Can't rec since I haven't tried it yet.

For $0.99, I find Card Wars - Adventure Time to be a pretty fun experience.  While I do not think it has the depth of Magic:  The Gathering or Hearthstone, the game seems to play fairly well and it has tons of charm.  I could see where some people may have hesitations about the In-App Purchases, it does not seem to negatively impact the single player experience so far.  Of course, this is not to say anything about the Online Multiplayer, where In-App Purchases of Treasure Chests may confer a significant advantage.

If you like Adventure Time and card games, this is a really easy recommendation.

I can confirm that Acts 2 & 3 can currently be unlocked for free from within the app. Download Act I, start it up, then on the main screen where it says "Swipe for Level Select" continue swiping until it offers you the option to Unlock Act II or Unlock All. Select Unlock All and it will prompt you for your Apple ID password, and after inputting it will confirm that the purchase is free.

Thanks jjz203 for the heads-up! I'm looking forward to playing this tonight.

Thanks for the heads up and confirming! Need some more noir in my life. But iOS backlogs are also some of the hardest for me to make a dent in.

Also reminded of Mark of the Ninja. Maybe just the side scrolling level select.

That is creepy for multiple reasons.

1) Microphone is on, what data is being sent/recieved/passive?

2) That achievement is for a quickie. I know I'm not the average guy.. but seriously, 3-5 minutes? No way that works well for BOTH parties.

3) Seriously, we're resorting to data plotting stuff? Seems excessive.
Right in the description of the app: "Spreadsheets is a mobile application created to provide statistical feedback of a couples' performance based on movement (accelerometer) and audio (microphone) data"

They say the average duration is under 3 minutes (though I'm sure there are outside factors contributing to that).

I could upgrade my iPad 4 to a new Air for about $70. It worth it at this point or should I just wait?
If you can get a similar upgrade price on the upcoming iPad, I would wait. Otherwise, I think it's worth it to upgrade from 4 to Air for $70. Thinner, lighter, smaller bezel, and faster. I read a lot of manga on my Air and find the size and weight of it just awesome!

The nice looking and great playing stealth game Third Eye Crime has dropped to free! The IAP in the game are also showing Act 2 and Act 3 for free even though only Act 1 is available at this time?? Maybe it'll be free for future updates. Either way, definitely a fun pickup while it's free!

http://appshopper.com/games/third-eye-crime-act-1
App is still free, but IAP is now $4.99 to unlock all.

On sale at best buy today as a dotd, minus $50 student coupon, minus 10% mover's coupon, selling my 4th gen or wii u.
Dang. Thanks for the heads-up. Just did the math for my own swap (64 GB wifi for each model), and I'm still looking at a ~$293 upgrade. :whistle2:(

Woohoo!  Finally upgrading from my G1 ipad to...

an ipad mini (queue crickets).

Yeah, yeah it's like jumping from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age.  But hey, I put up with my old one since the Verzion blowout.  This should be more than good enough.

Got one from Target just as they were put out during lunch.  Even then, almost missed out as a family wanted to buy up both models in the case.

Now I get to catch up on all the apps I've missed out on.

Gonna use my old one around the office for some simple tasks (which I think it can handle).

So looks like DotEmu is having a sale on their apps. The following games dropped to $.99

Another world 20th anniversary edition
The last express
Raiden legacy
R-type
R-type 2
Double dragon trilogy

Sorry for the lack of links, I don't post much and can't get text hyperlinks to work using an iPad.

I actually far prefer the Mini to the larger models. It's just the right size for a tablet, IMO. When I use the bigger ones, I feel like I should just use my laptop. My wife has an Air, and while it's impressively thin/light, it's still too big to use comfortably for me. The Mini is perfect for that.

Liberation Madien is .99 cents until August 31st. Normally $2.99. Currently $7.99 on the 3ds eshop. It's a pretty good shmup made in part by grasshopper manufacture and suda51.

Being a Hitman fan, I was skeptical on Hitman Go, but damn is it solid! It's turn based, but you still actually feel like a silent assassin and it just plays so well! Man, seriously blown away by how surprisingly good this is. I recommend it to anyone.

I would personally stay away from Star Trek Trexels.  It might have gone free, but it's the same ol' F2P timer based building trash.  If you like that style or Dragonvale or the like, go for it.. I don't care for being told I can only play so much in a given time before waiting to play more.

All of these are on sale down to .99:

THE KING OF FIGHTERS '98

・THE KING OF FIGHTERS '97
・THE KING OF FIGHTERS-i 2012
・THE KING OF FIGHTERS-i
・METAL SLUG 3
・METAL SLUG X
・METAL SLUG 2
・METAL SLUG 1
・SAMURAI SHODOWN II
・BLAZING STAR

after watching his review, I'm angry that I even spent time to purchase the game (for free).  I guess I'll steer clear of this game.

That game is kinda creepy looking. The characters all look like they're wearing some sort of evil witch doctor masks.
Journey Down Chapter 1 is a really nicely done point and click. If Apple hadn't permanently disabled my iTunes account (almost exactly a year ago), I'd probably buy Chapter 2 to support the developer.
