I took German in high school, but only because I needed fuckin' credits and it was a 'gimme' class. The teacher would put the answers to the prior night's homework on the board before class began, so you could just copy them down verbatim on a sheet of blank tablet paper and hand them in like everyone else and never fail the class.

Japan is a xenophobic society, english is the 2nd most spoken language in the world, so it may be standard to hear it. Have you tried talking to them in spanish?

Lazy? I'm far from it actually. But what would it take to learn another language? Buying books, taking lessons? Those would most certainly cost a certain thing called MONEY and I'm not about to spend any of that on junk I don't need or want.

Now, more games that I won't play for 6 months or more, that's a useful expense to spend the money on.

It's nonsensical to suspect that much of the uproar over illegal immigration is really just a cover for a deeper resentment of immigrants period. Because the American people (not government here, us as a whole) have always welcomed immigrants with open arms.

you are right there isnt a law that makes you have to learn english, but I think what he is getting upset over is the fact that there isnt alot of initiative for illegal or legal immigrants to learn english. Instead the government thinks it is more reasonable for the country to adapt to spanish. Its an opinion that has nothing to do with race, but the facts are out there and the VAST majority of americans speak english, the government writes bills in english, we are an english speaking country whether you like it or not, and I dont thinks it is unfair to ask people who come to this country to learn the language that is most spoken here, just like you think us uncultured americans should learn spanish, why shouldnt spanish people learn a second language, especially one that would be as useful to them as english. I dont think the government should force them, but I do think they should make an attempt. Again would you go live in japan and expect the japanese to adapt to you, or would you make an attempt to learn at least some japanese?
 
Most latin people i encounter speak pretty decent English actually. Even when older people don't, their kids usually do since they often grew up here. Besides that, English is as hard to learn for a non-English speaker as Spanish would be for us. Don't get the idea that it's something they can pick up a year after being here and speak it as well as we can.

Yes, actually. It's a new rule. I believe that previously, knowledge of English and/or French greatly improved your chances, but were not absolutely necessary.

I don't know if/how it applies to someone going for refugee status or through family sponsorship, though. Mike?

Meh. Personal opinion: I speak one language, if you can't communicate using the one I speak, chances are I can't help you. I don't give a fuck if people speak English or not, I don't. It's their choice, other people who speak other languages can help them, me? I don't really have much interest in learning a lot of languages right now, not my priority. Closeminded? Three observations:

First, I'm amused by the people upset that the government is allowed to ask residents about their citizenship status - the same people, who, a short while ago, was defending the government asking this question and so much more.

Second, I'm amused by the people who support boycotts of Arizona-based companies in hopes that they'll use their business influence to sway the government into making changes. These same individuals often complain about the amount of influence private business has in the workings of our government.

Third - I'm amused by the people who throw little baby hissy fits that the new Arizona law requires that legal resident non-citizens have their proof of residency on them at all times. Ignoring the fact that Federal law has had this exact same requirement for a long, long time.
