I work at Peachtree Center, so we usually go down once or twice on Friday (i'll be off this year tho, dammit) and watch folks walk back and forth between the Marriott and the Hyatt or Hilton (whichever one is on P'tree, I can't remember). It's like a constant parade of costumes, some incredible, some you wish you could get the image out of your head. Speaking of parades though, I think they do a parade down P'tree on Saturday. So, that may be how your friends have been 'looking at the freaks,' and not actually going inside the conference area??? I know another popular thing is to go down to one of the hotel bars on Friday/Saturday night for a 'viewing.'
I went about 3 years ago to "look" with a bunch of friends and got "hooked". Everyone there is really nice and didn't mind having their picture taken with me (most of the costumes you can't tell apart from the real thing). You can go inside the hotels without a badge/paying, just not inside the rooms where panels are going on. If you have kids, having their picture taken with costumed Bobba Fett, Chewbacca (who is 8 feet tall!), Disney Princesses or Master Chief will make their day! Even the celebrities walk around the hotels to see everyone (without bodyguards or entourages).
I was pissed I couldn't get into any of the rooms, so the next year I bought a pass and got "hooked". After that, I never thought twice about going. I've met Lloyd Kaufman (one of my favs, because he does what he wants to do), got drunk with Brad Dourif and tried to pick up chicks with a "he's married, so I'm not ratting him out" celeb.
If your into Sci-Fi, it's a must go. I'm more into the B-movie, Horror, independent film genre, but it was still right up my alley with the countless number of movies (long and short) screenings, Q & A's, Panels, etc. It's also a great place to network and get contacts.
Plus Traci Lords will be there. How cool is that! I've always admired her...."body of work" since I was a kid

Not a Trekkie, so don't care too much for Shatner or Nimoy.
