Best Buy Exclusive: 11 Guitar Hero III bonus tracks w/ Metallica's Death Magnetic

CAGiversary!

**UPDATE 9/12/08**

The 11 tracks are the same tracks you can buy on XBOX Live. Only the Special Edition has the code to download the tracks. Technically, you have to go to the GH website and enter the code found in the Special Edition to get the XBOX Live code. Each Special Edition has a unique code and so there will not be a repeat of the Disturbed fiasco.

Be sure to let us know how bitching to support goes--if anyone gets the codes from their standard edition...we need to know!

I'll be calling once my CD comes in, which could be today.
You guys DO realize that there is a second audio CD included in the special edition with demo cuts of every album right? And a few other goodies. I don't see how you can feel ripped off..
Actually I didnt know that. It doesnt say anywhere on Best Buys site what it includes.

Do you actually have your copy in hand? I haven't heard anything about a second cd. A lot of people have been confusing the Best Buy exclusive with the Mission Metallica coffin box set. I'd love to see pix if you have them.

Okay I might have confused it. I don't have the album yet, and once again Best Buy's website is confusing me. The special edition lists the track list, then says:

11. Includes instructions to download 11 exclusive bonus tracks for Guitar Hero III on Xbox 360

While the regular $9.99 version does not. I think you have to buy the $30 special edition to get the songs, since they are selling for about $18 on the Marketplace (when you pay for points at a normal price).
You guys DO realize that there is a second audio CD included in the special edition with demo cuts of every album right? And a few other goodies. I don't see how you can feel ripped off..
It could be that Best Buy's "special edition" is just the regular album + download card. Hence they claim exclusivity, since they're the only place selling that particular album+card combo.

Meanwhile there's a special edition that's actually a different retail package altogether, with all that neat stuff you described.

Pure conjecture on my part, but based on BB's odd wording of everything that's what I'd guess is going on.

Also it just occurred to me that, throughout this whole confusing ordeal, the ad never actually said what exactly you'd be downloading. I mean, we were able to ASSUME it was the Death Magnetic album in GH form, but what was the point of leaving that so ambiguous??? Man, they've really got some half-wits in their advertising department.

I bought the Best Buy special edition which is cd and card combo only. I went in there thinking it was gonna have the song demos and a dvdas mentioned above but its not. There is supposed to be a tshirt and flag and other goodies with special edition found on metallicas website.

Bought it. It's the Metallica album in a digipack with the download code for Death Magnetic. No extra disc. That's the Coffin set.
Also, not sure if the normal album is like this or not, but the lyric booklet has holes in all of the pages for a really cool looking layered effect, but it F's up the pages to where some of the lyrics are cut out.
Whatever. I dont buy Metallica for hard hitting and thought provoking lyrics. That's why I buy Limp Bizkit.

The Death Magnetic download is freaking HUGE. 11 songs take up 1.34 GB??? What the living shit is this? Didnt' The Who's Rock Band pack only take up like 300-350MB? Why does this album need so much space? If this is a sign of things to come with Guitar Hero World Tour DLC, I'm not gonna give up that much hard drive space for so few songs...

The set that comes with the demo CD, DVD, shirt, picks, flag is ONLY with the limited coffin set they sold via their website. I believe overseas it was sold in some stores as well. It's well over $100, and I believe also sold out.

I double-checked Best Buy's SE and the only thing extra in it is the code for downloading the 360 GH tracks.

Thanks for the info. After scouring the interwebz for a few days I was guessing that was the case. Did you happen to notice if the regular version was in a jewel case or digipak? There's some debate about what stores are getting what version.

My guess is this particular GH download is extra large because it has to work with both GHIII and World Tour. Otherwise they are really going to piss people off eating up that much hard drive space.

So BB is charging $30 for a CD that you can get for $9.99 and a download that equates to $18 in MSP. Considering most people (including myself) have stocked up on MSP on B1G1 and B1G1 half off sales or Target clearances, I think I'll be passing on this. What an utter disappointment. Looks like I'll be returning the copies I purchased....

EDIT - that is a huge investment in HD space too. Are all these songs 10 minutes long?

This is quite possibly the biggest epic fail from the recording industry this year. The CD is awesome. Why did they have to try to pull this shit? They're basically assuming people are retards...

people, it's already happened and settled. don't like it? don't buy it. simple as that and that's the route I chose. I refuse to spend $30 for a cd and dlc. I'll just buy the dlc content and wait for a price drop on the cd or i'll get the cd elsewhere. it's no biggie. don't let these deals fool you. it's the only way the company could get album sales for metallica. either way, they're making $. all money being made is off dlc for games and ringtones so album sales aren't the peak highlight nowadays.

Well, I got the regular CD and no dl card came with it (but I already figured that was the case). I called BB customer support just to whine at them. The rep I talked to asked when I preordered the cd and then verified it with the order number. I ordered it on 9/1. He told me that everyone who called and had preordered before the website was changed (He said the date but I don't recall what it was) is being sent to another department. They are supposed to contact me within five days. From what he told me something is underway to "fix" the problem. What that might be I don't know and I honestly am not expecting much if anything. If nothing else give BB a call and talk to a rep. The most it'll cost you is a few minutes of time and maybe a "fix" at sonme point.

I also didn't get nasty with the rep. He was nice to me and I returned the favor. Pissing off a rep will just cause them to give up on a case.

I was gonna pick up this cd anyway (and it's actually not bad) and with RB2 coming out sunday I will have way too much music too play. I can wait a few days to see what BB comes up with.

Why are people's expectations of BB so high? Has there ever been an ambiguous BB deal that ended well? The only BB deals worth jumping on are ones you know that will get cancelled because then you at least have a chance of getting a sympathy BB.com $5 code and there is no risk.
i read about this yesterday... this seriously is unacceptable for a release that you have to pay money for... guys, rick rubin sucks (although, this probably was at the fault of the people mixing/mastering)
I was wondering what it was, I thought I blew my speakers out or something, but I noticed it immediately, that sucks.

Was 9/1 before they changed the site and did you get sent to the other department? I'm pretty sure they edited the page on around 9/6 - 9/8. That was also the day I ordered. I think that was about a day after the promotion first went up, maybe less.
wow the SE is just the digipak? I got it for free for buying tickets to their show.
No, the Best Buy SE has codes to download the tracks for Guitar Hero.

Just found another interesting flaw in their false-advertisement.

Go to bestbuy.com/metallica

See in the picture where it says you get the card with your order "while supplies last"? Well how can the card be only while supplies last being that the card is packed in with the special edition case? So they're saying that once the cards run out, the special edition no longer comes with the card and is reduced to a normal CD for $30? Isn't the only thing that differentiates the SE with regular just the code card?

29.99???
WTF?
Wait a minute. Oh yeah, we are talking about Metallica after all. I'm actually surprised it's not $50.
Then again, 29.99 is the SALE(????)price. Wow.
Ahh, yes, there's the Metallica I know. $44.99 msrp.

That was exactly the point I was making way back when about the confusion. If it was while supplies lasted it wouldnt make sense that it would be all that made the SE special. I guess the wording is just bad and they mean while the SE supplies last. Still what a ripoff.

I'm pretty sure it is. I printed the promo out when I preordered (Just in case) and it has the Labor day specials - 2 days only bar on it. I had thought at the time that this was a labor day special.

The Special CD option was added sometime on 9/1 to the site, before that you could only order the regular version and the vinyl version.

I think it was there when I ordered. But the point is that they didn't edit the site, they said it comes with "Death Magnwtic" and it lists 3 different products on the promo page. No CS rep even knew what was going on. I was told 3 times on the phone that I would receive them and I will make sure they eventualy get to me.

What did you say to get them to say you'd get the codes? My first call stated I have to purchase the special edition, and that I can return the one I have. I'd certainly like to be able to pressure them into giving me the codes with this current purchase.

Edit: Tried a second rep. They told me within a week, the codes should be emailed out.

I'm guessing this is "standard" of codes for online orders..but I'm hoping there's some truth to it. The rep said if I didn't have my codes emailed to me within a week, to call again.

So I'll do that. I'm probably going to open up the CD and use it in my car (it doesn't read CD-Rs well at all) during the week, anyways. Not sure on the return policy on a CD that's been used, but, oh well.

There's still some hope yet!

got mine today and no dlc code.

but i called BB CS and they said that the marketing / promotion group was handling this and that they'd send me the DLC info. They asked my preferred method of communication and i said email. But, they said that I WOULD get the dlc code. So, just call and you'll be all set.

Got the number to Customer Service? I'm getting mines today (mailman takes forever to reach my house) and I'm pretty sure I'm not getting the DLC so I'd like to bitch as soon as I get my CD

I also ordered my CD on 8/31 so I'm pretty sure that the website wasn't changed by then and I should be eligible to get a DLC code from them with enough bitching

I also called this morning and if you were one of the people that ordered the CD on 8/31 or 9/1 its likely that they will be sending out download codes or a $10 giftcard.

I would prefer a $10 giftcard since I appose the ridiculous 1.3 gb download file but I'll settle with anything I can get. If I do get a giftcard then the CD was pretty much free :D

just called my self as well. I tried the store first and they made me look like a idiot that could not read glad to see I was not only one with this problem

You have to figure that Metallica's songs are a little longer than the Who's songs are. I'm guessing that the songs also include vocal, bass and drum layers for Guitar Hero: World Tour. Maybe the songs aren't going to be as compressed for GH:WT as they are in Rock Band/Rock Band 2. Who knows.

Between this and the update this fall where you can install games to your hard drive, it almost makes the 120gb hd a necessity.

Quick Question.
Why is it that this download is 1.3gb (for 11 songs), and I imagine it's just the guitar part?
But the option to take 50+ songs from your Rock Band 1 game, and download them to the hard drive, is only 1.57gb?

Not trying to start anything. I'm just wondering what I'm missing here. Did they add the Metallica band members characters to the game or something?

It includes the tracks for Guitar Hero World Tour as well as seperate tracks for GHIII. Essentially combining the content into one pack regardless which game you use it for.

Well, that's some good news, at least.

Sadly, I managed to have the CD sent to an old address of mine in town (this is what happens when I don't order delivery from BB in over 4 years, I forget to update my default address!). Someone should be living at the apartment now, so hopefully the landlord can help me on Monday. No one was there to get the package this morning (go UPS-USPS tracking!), so I'll call over after my first class Monday morning and hope for the best.

Just got my order today, obviously no code was on the package, called the first rep who had absolutely no clue what was going on and said there was nothing she could do blah, blah, blah. I asked for the case to be referred to the promotions department, thanks to a mention in this thread, and while she was transferring me I got hung up on.

Called back and got a different rep who was familiar with the situation. She forwarded my case to the promotions department, gave me a case number and said I should receive a code for the GH tracks by Wed/Thursday or next week. My order was placed on 8/31 if anyone was wondering.

I bought the CD with the XBOX 360 downloadable content, only problem is i'm a PS3 owner.

I'm selling the code for $16 Paypal if anyone wants to help a fellow CAG out, save $2, and get some positive feedback.

PM me if you're interested.

Thanks,
-Torrwin

This isn't a very good deal at all. You're much better off buying the 9 dollar album and then paying 15 dollars to purchase the tracks on Xbox Live.

You'll save 6 bucks in the process.

I called them up since I didn't get the code. The guy literally told me, "Well it only said while supplies last but at least you got a good CD." I E-mailed them just now to see what they'd say....hopefully, it'll get taken care of since I ordered it before they took the ad offline.

I see what you mean but keep in mind that the DLC is actually $18. It's great for the people who bought the $10 one on 8/31 or 9/1 since we'll get something out of it
That's what I was about to post....EPIC FAIL.

Why do they offer these bonuses only for one console? That makes absolutely no sense. Oh well, I had no intention of getting this album before - I *would* have with the bonus songs, but now I'm back to my original position. Sooo.....sales -1.
This is the best- I'm going to likely get this and buy GH3 now. Hooray for Xbox 360 exclusive- SCORE!

Dude, you really have to learn to read the topic before posting to avoid making yourself look like a jackass

Well, I'm in the same boat here. I pre-ordered the CD on 8/31/08 under the assumption that the $9.99 version of the CD came with the voucher (since there was no special edition listed at the time). I got my CD today and there was nothing listed on the packaging.

I sent a message via their website, but they said it could take up to 48-72 hours to hear back from them, so I tried calling them just now. After waiting on hold for five minutes, "Nick" from promotions said that it was out of his hands and could do nothing for me. I asked to speak to someone higher up, but apparently, there is no one higher I can talk to aside from a person from corporate.

He offered to do a partial refund on the CD and add some bonus points to my reward zone, but I said no dice. I either wanted the voucher for the tracks, or a gift card/Xbox Live points card so I can purchase them myself, which he said he could not do.

I'll try calling again tomorrow and hopefully I'll get someone else who knows what they're doing. This is a load of crap, cause I could have waited months to get this damn CD. I only pre-ordered it cause I thought it was a great deal. F'ing Best Buy. Their customer service can be a real joke sometimes. :bomb:

EDIT: Does anyone have a copy of the original ad (the one that does NOT list a special edition) that they displayed back in August? I thought I remembered seeing someone say they had it. If so, could you upload it/PM it to me in case I need it? Thanks.

I got the same deal...an E-mail saying I'd get a response within 72 hours. I called them again and asked to talk to the promo department and they refused to connect me and sent me to the Online. The lady just said, "It was only for the special edition; if you clicked on it you'd have seen that it had the tracks listed and the other editions didn't." I told her about the ad and whatnot and she kept going back to the track listings(which most people probably wouldn't even think to try to look on there).

I think I'm SOL on this.

fuck Bestbuy. It's either I'm getting something back or they block my phone number. I'll bug those people in India all day if I have to
