Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked FAQ

I just pre-ordered MKX, and witcher 3 at BB w/ GCU, each game came out to be 47.99. and i'm a rewards member...
--
the cashier said that i get the 10$ rewards off when i come back and actually pick up the game.
^^
What do i do here? If everything's golden, which it's not...i should have to flat out pay 37.99 period. not letting BB hold onto my 10$ like this, but i'm still worried if what the cashier even told me was accurate.
The process does not work that way. This thread has more information.

Essentially, if you preorder a game on the $10 list, you put some value of at least $5 to hold the game. Your receipt will indicate an estimated due value of the full amount of the game (no discount). You do not receive anything else at this time unless explicitly stated (like posters during promotional events).

When the game comes out, you return to the store with your receipt. Assuming competence, you will be asked to pay the $47.99 (assuming $59.99 MSRP) plus whatever tax is appropriate minus your original deposit. Your deposit is considered a form of payment at this time, not a reduction of the cost. The game is now yours to do with as you wish.

At some point typically within the next fifteen days, you will then receive points on your My Best Buy account equivalent to the $10 promotional value. Depending on your account level and settings, you will either automatically generate a certificate or add the points to your bank. You may then spend this $10 however you wish on any other item Best Buy sells.

This gets slightly more complicated if there is a coupon involved or you redeem a different certificate, but typically they are applied to the full price, then your discount applied.

It sounds like you paid the full amount during preorder, from the way you described the transaction. So you should not be asked for further payment (again, depending on how tax figures in), but neither will you receive a refund.

How often/if ever? does BBY put PS4 games on sale/clearance or have used PS4 games at a truly good price? Can I find a "fun" employee who'll let me stack GCU with a used game or a game that's on sale, as in, is that even a *possibility*? I'm still on the fence about getting GCU but I like some of the benefits...

Any new physical game gets the GCU discount, regardless if it's on sale, clearance or regular price. If it's a new condition game, you get 20% off of its current price.

That's part of what makes GCU so worth it, if you're willing to wait for a new release to go on sale in a month or three after release for, say, $40, with the GCU discount stacked it brings the price down to $32.

Quick question: my nephew is 13 and I want to buy the GCU membership for him for his B-Day. Can he be the account holder or should I activate it under his dad's info?

Thanks so much!

Is your nephew even old enough to register for the free Gamers Club that is needed to link Unlocked...? I'm guessing since his dad is probably more prone to actually making the purchases, I'd wager then your nephew's account is probably not the best choice.

Make sure when you buy this they actually activate it on your account, the cards they have hanging up around the store can be purchased and given as a gift so by default when the Cashier rings it up it just activates the card which can be later redeemed by anyone to create/renew a GCU membership.
I guess I'll be looking for an email tomorrow. I was wondering about that. He said it just adds to your current account but seemed too easy for Best Buy...

Is it possible to use Reward Zone certificates to pre-order a game, and then still collect the $10 credit for pre-ordering? I guess I'm asking if you can roll certificates toward new certificates? Forgive me if the answer was in the original post. Thanks

I haven't been using GCU for over a year now. Does the 20% off new games stack with price matches? Or is it still one or the other?

Yes. The only wrinkle is ordering in store, I've never used a certificate to pre-order, only to pay the final total. Not sure if you can use certificates for the original hold, but I don't see why not. Online is no issue.

Still one or the other, unless you have someone willing to bend the rules in your favor.

Thank you, Kojubat, I really appreciate your response. Time to go pre-order MK X.

I've had post-purchase PMs against Best Buy price drops to be credited back with the GCU discount figured in there, though if it's another vendor, they won't.

A have a few questions since I have been out of the loop for a year or two with GC.

I am not currently a member and I placed an online order for Metal Gear V CE.

If I go to the store and sign up, will the 20% automatically adjust on my preorder?

Will I get the $10 cert still?

Can I buy more than one from the same console and still get 20% and the $10 on each?

I can't answer the first part about getting the price-adjusted after ordering. I would assume you'd have to return/re-buy but then you'd most likely lose the pre-order cert from what I've read on here over and over. Those pre-order gift certs are only available once per console, possibly also once per game but again someone can correct me if I've gotten that part wrong.

I activated my GCU at 8pm last night and when I checked on BestBuy.com five hours later if it was active (by adding a Halo 5: Guardians Limited Collector's Edition to my cart) the 20% off was right there without any effort besides being logged into my account.

I like GCU, but I have had very terrible experiences recently with pre-orders at Best Buy and actually getting the $10 pre-order certificate (500 points) applied on my account.  Twice in a row with pre-orders that were on the list to get the $10 certificates, I never got them even after waiting 15 days after pickup.  Having to wait 15 days is bad enough as it is, but in both cases I still never got them and separately had to call twice and spend an hour+ on the phone to eventually get the $10 cert.  Worse yet, in both cases they initially on the phone tried to deny the points saying the game wasn't on the pre-order $10 list when they both were.  Eventually after much time on the phone they corrected it, but #1 they should have been automatically applied and #2 I'm not happy that I had to spend an hour+ on the phone arguing with them to get them applied.  For example, on the GTA 5 PC pre-order they at first tried claiming that it only applied to the PS4/XBONE version, which is ridiculous since those came out 6 months earlier.  It felt a lot like the headache of trying to get a rebate.

So TLDR, enjoy GCU, but at least for me...the experience with the pre-order $10 game bonuses has been bad.  I'm guessing others have had better luck, or maybe it's just recent pre-orders that BBY is kind of playing the rebate-type shenanigans with.  I'll still use GCU but at least for me, no more BBY pre-orders if I have to go call, fight, and jump through hoops to eventually get the $10 certs.

Have you ever tried Best Buy's "Unboxed" forum? I was getting an ulcer trying to deal with their regular email support team, so for the hell of I posted my issues (one, long continuing problem with activating a GCU renewal, and another for not being sure about product info on a pre-order) and they bent over backwards to get me workable solutions; it was incredible how much more efficient their OPs were..

That's how I've dealt with two issues and had very quick responses out of there. I'd second this suggestion.

So I've got a question on I went to best buy today to buy controller for the PlayStation 4 and I asked the clerk to add me to the gamers club unlocked program and she told me that they are going to eliminate that program soon so it wouldn't be fair for me to pay for something that will not be working after a while is this true is this confirmed?

Best Buy is adding free two day shipping, but that wouldn't affect this
