BEST BUY'S VIDEO GAMES TRADE-IN PAGE

Check most up-to-date TIV using BB's Video Games Value Estimator.

Check which BB stores do trade-ins here.
In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

:bomb: The values in the Lists do not match the values in the Estimator. What's up with that?
I don't know. It seems the Lists are usually updated on Sundays, and the TIVs are adjusted to reflect the List in a few days. But as trades are made, the TIVs may change and the Lists are not updated frequently. Again, check the Estimator for latest TIV.

The promo says "Trade 2..." or "Trade 3..." but I only want to trade 1 game, will I still get $x amount?
You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. The promo is titled "Trade 2" etc to make the giftcards sound more lucrative.

The 2 games I want to trade are worth more than $60 combined according to the Estimator. Does that mean I will only get $60 for the 2 games?
No. You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. For example, if your total according to the Estimator is $70, you will get a $70 giftcard.

:bomb: If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as you ship it before the "Ship by" date "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value" (as of 5/2), and your games are received in the condition you declared.

How long do I have after I lock in a trade online before I have to ship it?
30 days. Has been recently changed to "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value".

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
According to BB: "We will not accept more than 3 games of the same title and platform from a customer (or address) in a year. Please do not submit more than the limit as excess submissions WILL NOT BE RETURNED." Example, you can trade 3 copies of Portal 2 for PS3 and 3 copies of Portal 2 for x360 without problems. Some people have been banned from trade-ins at BB due to the violation of this policy. If you plan on trading more than 3 copies of a game per platform by doing it through various stores, you do so at your own risk and discretion.

:bomb: Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
BB used to be strict about complete copies, but this has changed, and ppl are trading games in store without manuals or cover sleeve for full TIV. If you trade online it's sometimes YMMV. I would advise you to send in complete games (case, disc, manual) since some ppl are reporting only getting 50% of the locked TIV.

I see people talking about getting Amazon giftcards by trading at Best Buy. How are they doing that?
Some Best Buys sell Kindle giftcards which can be used on Amazon.com like regular Amazon giftcards. You will not get the Kindle card with your trade, but you can buy them with your BB giftcard.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
According to BB's own FAQ:
Q: Is trade-in limited to items I bought at Best Buy?
A: No.

I don't know why this happens, but apparently some stores do not have their system setup to take non-BB purchased items at this time. Check the link above regarding stores that do video games trade-ins first.
Thanks for confirming it works with an existing preorder, didn't want to do another preorder then cancel my previous 1.
It's YMMV on working with existing. Some will deny it as they have contests for which stores can get the most preorders. But like always I just return it the next time I come in.

I have 10 games I preordered there and once in a while they will tell me I have to preorder a game this time to get the bonus. Instead of hassling with them I just do it and return the preorder later.

I did have CS say I couldn't return the preorder once because I got the bonus TiV and would have to return that when I returned the preorder. I just tell them I already had 10 games preordered and they made me do another one and if they want to fight with me I will just take my business elsewhere.
Just $5, supposedly that's all they will take anyway, it's not like GS.
Oh, that's neat. I was under the impression that you had to put it all on Gears.

Wicked.

I don't think they can take any of your trade in credit away as they do it as 2 different transactions, you have to do like $5 cash and the trade ins, or maybe trade ins first then use the GC you get towards the preorder.
The 10% stacks on top of the GeOW3 promo, bringing it up to 60%.

A little note for people in New England though. Apparently due to NY being in a state of emergency b/c of flooding, my store didn't have anything related to the Unlocked program in, so they can't sign you up for it until next week/week after.

I was still able to get the 10% bonus b/c apparently you can sign up for the program through the Trade-In system, but it didn't charge me the $15 for a subscription.

There's no proof I'm actually signed up (dunno if I'm in the system), but at the very least you can get the 10% bonus if you tell the employees that workaround. Otherwise you'd be wasting a trip there. It ~seems~ like a radio button/checkbox just like all the other promos they run.

I AM NOT ADVOCATING GETTING INTO THE PROGRAM FOR FREE. I told the person working at the time I'd talk to the gaming supervisor later when he's in and actually sign up.
Im in indiana and they didnt have anything about the club either and they just looked the sku up and signed me up that way so you dont really need anything in store to sign up,
also got 60% trade in with GOW3 and 10% ^^ bonus ended up with 110 credit off ps2 sports games.

I've never traded in games with Best Buy, but I'm interested in that 50% bonus toward Gears of War 3.

So how does this work? I'm looking at the Video Games Value Estimator page for reference, but does the Gears promotion basically take those trade-in values and double them?

So for instance, if it says that the trade-in value for Rayman 2 on 3DS is $9, does that mean I can trade it in for $18 if I take it to BB and put it toward Gears 3? Is that how it works?

/facepalm

50% means 50%, not 100%. So if you wanna trade in Rayman for $9, you'll get $13.50 back in a giftcard (9*.5 = $4.50). To get the +50%, you have to put $5 down to preorder Gears of War 3. That's it. You don't pay it off. Pay $5, get +50% trade in.

It's 50% so take the base value an multiply it by 1.5 and that is what you will get. Rayman is $9 so times that by 1.5 and you get $13.50.

Whoops, ever am I terrible in math.

So if I'm reading the guidelines right, you can only trade three games per platform, which means I can only trade up to 3 3DS games for this offer, right?

But how many games can I trade in total, assuming I wanted to trade games from other platforms?

On the website it's "3 of the same game on the same platform, per year". Apparently this is YMMV as others have reported they get away with more and others get away with less than that, I read someone in one store was only able to trade in 1 copy of a game per 6 months or something.
thought the in store price is still $40 - sale appeared to be online only
Sale is definitely nationwide. If you call, they must ring it through the register. It's a discount, not a price change; so it will not appear on the physical game box.

And now, back to OT...

So does that mean I could trade in 3 games from 3DS, 3 from PS3, 3 from Wii, and so on toward Gears 3 without restriction?

What happens if I exceed the amount of the game itself? Will they still honor the 50% bonus toward a gift card or something?

The online restriction is 3 of the SAME GAME for a specific platform... meaning you could trade in 3 copies of Madden 12 for the PS3, 3 copies for Madden 12 for the XB360 and 3 copies of Madden 12 for the Wii. What the restriction is in store is unknown. I personally traded in a total of 4 copies of the same game for the same platform to different stores on different days and did not have a problem.

Not sure what you mean "exceed the amount of the game itself"... if you mean exceed the cost of Gears of War 3, then that is not an issue. Not matter what the total of your trade in, you only have to put $5 down on GeOW3... so if you get $100 for the trade in, you would get $150 with the pre-order bonus, and you would put $5 on GeOW3 and get a gift card for $145.

I mean I thought it was clear dude.....3 copies of the same game on the same platform.

I've traded in 3 copies of the Sims 3 on 360, and 3 copies of it on the PS3, that's according to their rules.

The kid tried to tell me I couldn't do it at first and he couldn't accept them all so I went to another store and got rid of the rest, that's what the rules say, but its YMMV because the employees are either, stupid, ignorant, or don't want you to gain from the program.
Only received 50% instead of 60%, but the difference was $5-$6 so I didn't care too much.
Shame on you! No true CAG would leave 5 or 6 in credit on the table. That's gonna be like throwing a 5 dollar bill on the ground as you walk out of the store as soon as you use that credit.

My question wasn't referring to copies of the same title. I meant three individual games each per platform, i.e. three separate 3DS games, three separate Wii games, etc.
My question wasn't referring to copies of the same title. I meant three individual games each per platform, i.e. three separate 3DS games, three separate Wii games, etc.
Wut? Seriously, or are you just trolling? lol

There is no limit to how many games you can trade in per platform. You are only limited to trading in 3 of the SAME GAME per year, as their policy says. Anything else is ok.

That's not the rule but the maximum they are supposed to allow. They also state very clearly that they can deny any trade for any reason. So while you were still under the maximum allowed they have every right to say no.
My question wasn't referring to copies of the same title. I meant three individual games each per platform, i.e. three separate 3DS games, three separate Wii games, etc.
Ugh... you can trade in 120 DS games (although their system has trouble handling more than 30 games at a time) in one trip if you want, so long as you don't have more than 3 copies of any one title. Yes, as everyone says, this is a little YMMV, but the corporate policy seems to be three of a title per platform per year so it's probably wise to stay within that limit.

So again, the ONLY limitation on trade-ins is that you can only trade in 3 copies of a game for the same platform in a year (with the above mentioned YMMV exceptions). To get the 50% bonus you have to pre-order Gears of War 3, which cost $5. To get the extra 10% (making 60% total) bonus you have to pay for the Gamers Club UNLOCKED membership which is $15. You cannot pay more than $5 for the pre-order and yes, you can cancel it later if you don't actually want the game. You will need a drivers license, and yes, games without all the artwork or even disc only can and should be accepted.

Is there anything I have left out? Because reading the last three pages has been kind of like having a conversation about my 2 year old nephew about astro physics.

interesting even after a week, all the PS2 games still have a 1$ minimum, tempted to do one more GS run, especially if I'm going to get arrested next time I trade at BB :)

I wasn't; like I said, I don't know about Best Buy's trade-in policies, so when I read about a restriction over three types of the same game per platform, I wondered if there were other restrictions regarding the total number of games you can put toward a pre-order.

I happen to have a sizable backlog of titles to pawn off, so if they really will let me bring in a truckload of titles and offer the 50% bonus toward each one, then I'll certainly get in on it.

I stopped by GS on the way and picked up a Move Heroes for 10 bucks and flipped it for 22.50 with the Gears promo. All together I got just under 100 bucks, and the guy didn't even ring up the Gears pre-order. I had to tell him I actually wanted Gears. I returned another pre-order and for some reason got .31 cash back.

Tax you're in CA?
Tax you're in CA?
Some preorders are taxed and some aren't. Why I don't know. Seems like tax is 6.2%ish in your area though.

I don't know what exactly they didn't have... You apparently get a brochure and some crap? Idk. All I missed out on was getting the magazine today, but hey I didn't pay anything either so whatever.

I'm in Illinois, and I only paid $5 even on the first pre-order I returned. So basically I paid $5 and got back $5.31. The girl at customer service put the $5 on Gears, and even said "for some reason I'm giving you .31 back."

I have a bunch of copies of a game I got for way cheap. I really wish I could find a way to trade them in to BB without having to harass my relatives to trade them in for me.
By the way, how much is BB selling the Gears 3 controller? Any chance they would price-match Buy.com's price of $50?
highly YMMV. They don't PM online stores. Only stores with a 25 mile radius of the one you are at.

That being said there are some lax managers that have PMed TVs to Amazon. But those stories are 1 in a million.

They are selling it for $59.99
I hope you are joking
Of course this should be asked atleast once a page. Let's not utilize the search thread function. Along with "how do kindle cards work", and "how do visa gift cards work". ^__^

I found my answer haha sorry for the noob question! Anyways I already preordered GOW3 on amazon, I'm a bit tempted to preorder GOW3 at BB just for the Mechanic Baird skin. Anyone know if you could pick up the game and the skin code, then return the game?

they dont pay crap on ds game... hell i would almost match their offers on the ds and psp games.

thinking about going tomorrow with my last 2 dragon ages . doing the trade in with the 10% add on

11 each + 60 % more = 17.60 x2 another 35 buck flip

For the most part you are right. Was a surprise about a month ago when I found some clearance shovelware for DS at target that I could actually flip too BBY. $5 -> $7 base.

I have a question about the pre-orders and giftcards. Say I used up a giftcard I got from the trade-ins before I returned a preorder. Where would the $5 pre-order credit go when I return the pre-order? Would it go back onto the giftcard? I no longer have the giftcard since I already used it up. Does anyone know if it's possible to have the $5 credited onto something else?

Just came back from a successful trade-in again in my best buy store. First, I got the membership (free with my current subscription) for the 10% more bonus. The employee I know said we are suppose to get some kind of card but because it just started, they didn't have any at the moment. I pre-ordered Gears of War 3 earlier this month but the employee let me slide. The 10% stacked with the 50% bonus so with 16 games, I came out of the store with a $300 gift card. Very happy indeed.

Got lucky today. Traded in a bunch of PS3 and 360 games from BBV for a total of $156 after my 60% bump. I already had GOW3 preordered, so the guy just went ahead and put it in like I preordered it again, but didnt charge me the $5. Then I asked about signing up for the Gamers Club Unlocked thing and after a couple minutes of him fooling around on the computer he said that somehow he applied the extra 10% and I wasnt charged at all. Dont know how this worked...but on the trade in paperwork it says Gamers Club "Unlocked". So...I dunno. Am I signed up now and will I get the mag in the mail?

I was told we are actually going to be getting a sticker in the mail that we can attached to pretty much whatever, current RZ card, credit card, etc. Just so long as we have it. That said, apparently right now they have no way of confirming if you are a member or not, least it appears there may not be a way (I wasn't doing a trade in, only signing up) and the girl was looking but couldn't find anything about that. So just an FYI, if you sign up and aren't doing a trade in right then, I recommend bringing your receipt for the membership with you when you go to trade in.

Receipt for the Gamer Magazine Subscription?

YMMV. But most likely no. Again they can deny a trade for any reason but this shouldn't be one of those.

Havent checked yet, but in what increments can you purchase the Visa Gift cards? And what is it, like a $5 or $6 charge for the card itself? Think I may have a way to turn my BB credit into...even MORE BB credit!

Anyone signed up today without any hassle? I'm debating going to BB tonight since the program is new. I have a feeling the employees aren't up to speed yet.
