What's up with college kids and the N64? When I was in college I had one in my room, I knew several kids with N64s and this was after the PS2, Xbox, GC were already out. My brother who just started college this year is always talking about playing the N64. He even took some of my games back to the dorm with him. And now you. Is there some sort of retro console gaming fad going on?
To be fair, I'm a lost cause - I actually played Jedi Knight (complete with Mysteries of the Sith expansion installed) over our school's network with some of my friends. Considering that the game is close to ten years old at this point, that's saying something.
I don't know what it is with the N64, but it's just
fun. We've played Halo 2, Battlefield 2, and SSBM, sure, but it always seemed like we got bored with them much more quickly.
Mario Tennis, on the other hand, was played to death, and there was a good deal of Super Smash Brothers, Goldeneye, and Mario Kart 64 mixed in as well.
Even with the limitations of the system (less characters and levels) and the occasionally painfully obvious slowdown and graphical strain, the N64 games just seem to hold up better. Maybe it's the fact that they're simpler, maybe it's that they've got better replay value, or maybe it's that the playing field is usually more level because we've all played these games to death...but whatever it is, the N64 can still hold its own in my dorm.
