Big Lots Anime DVDs $3.00 New Shipment YMMV?

fairyland

CAGiversary!
As always good old Big Lots has anime but this time at a new low of $3.00 each. Pretty good Bandai titles. I personally bought 10 discs and I think I left about 20 behind, so I think they normally get about 30 in each time, which makes this a YMMV as they usually sell out when the first otaku arrives.

I got:

Gundam Seed 1, 2
Z Gundam 2 Disc CDs 1, 2
Overman King Gainer 1, 2
Hoop Days 1
Panda Z 1,3
Cowboy Bebop Best Sessions.

Not my usual choices (I go for comedy and harems), but I was feeling good and wanted to experiment and $3.00 is so cheap.

Others that I remember:

Stratos 4 OVA
Angels Tales 1, 3 (super recommended, but I already have)
Galaxy Angel 1 (also super recommended and I have)
Wolf's Rain 3 (Most would recommend it, but I hated what I seen of it)

There was several Cowboy Bepop Best Sessions, but almost everything else was that 1 disc only, so the first Otaku that spots this would probably clean out their stock. I honestly cannot remember the other titles, but they was not disc one and I won't try anything mid series anymore. More Mecha/space stuff if I remember, SD Gundam, etc.

----UPDATE 7-11-07

A new batch of titles. I think I wrote them all down, but there could be a couple I missed. All the prior anime DVDs was gone, so I suspect any DVDs mentioned before this date probably won't be in your local store. As always YMMY and usually only 1 per store.

Cowboy Bepop Best sessions (this one had a different cover, but looked like the same contents)
G Gundam 6
Fantastic Children 1
Z Gundam 3 4
Winx (2 diff)
Planetez 3 (special edition)
Angel Tales 2
Galaxy Angel Z 1 3
Stratos 4 1
SD Gundam
Strive 3? (I could not make out what I said...)
Dragonball Z (several)
Panda z 4 5
TMNT new series (several)
IGPX 1, 2 orange, 1 Blue, 3 Green (color of number on side of DVD)
Marsday break 5
DICE (2 kinds)
My Dad Is a Rockstar 1
Case Closed (two different ones)
Yukekazi 1, 2
Yugioh 3.1, 3.5, 4.1
Gundam Seed 5, farway dawn, something sky
Overman King Gainer 3 4 5
Code Lyoko (forgot title)
Zentrix 1 and 2

I personally bought Z gundam 3 and 4. Even though I'm not liking it, my friend does need 3 and 4. The two Winx and two Case Closed. Overman King Gainer 3, 4, 5. Mars Daybreak 5, TMNT with Shredders daughter in it *hubba*, Fantastic Children, and Planetez.
I wsih I could find a store with Stratos 4 OAV. I have the TV already.
I didn't find one until I visited a fifth store.
nothing substantial to add to the thread really, but just thought I'd mention that a few years back I was in an anime store, and i overheard these two little kids, probably no older than 13 years old talkin about their favorite game:

"Hey you know what my favorite game is? Grand theft auto 3!"

in my head:
I'm not seeing what's so shocking here.

well it's no secret that most parents don't pay attention to what they get for their children, but if the fact that impressionable young kids playing overly violent games is not shocking to anybody, that's like saying it's become ok for kids to be playing these games imo
You shouldn't of gotten Hoop Days since theres a Hoop Days Collection set after only 2-3 dvds came out they stop making them.
Doh! Really? Then again, it was good price for a sample try though. I did not know I would like the series and I would not have bought the complete set unless it was very cheap. So far Hoop Days is proving to be the most enjoyible out of the list of what I bought and watched. I did not realise it was going to have a team of female basketball players and only 5 guys on the male side. The males must do a Rocky Balboa and overcome personal demons to be the best and prove themselves that they are as good as the female basketball players and yadda yadda. Tired plot, but I like it when it has a lot of females to offset the macho bishonen-ness of it.

It's turing out that several of the discs I bought I'm a bit dissappointed in. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is boring me to tears, even though I do love the old art style, I simply do not care for the story. Nothing is holding my interest for very long in it and it's proving a chore to watch. I'm hoping it gets better, but after 7 eps, I'm having doubts. A friend of mine is a Gundam nut and he is enjoying watching them with me, but this is my first venture into the series (a 15 year Otaku, and I've never seen any Gundam until now?) and it's not impressing me. It's probably because there is not enough characterazation for me to care about any of the people and what happens to them. I think the part that I enjoyed so far is that Faa is the same voice actress that plays the teacher in Doki Doki School Hours and I do love her voice so. LOL Shame she plays such a small role though.

Those Robot Pandas are the most dissappoining. They have five 6 minute eps on them and each ep has at least two and a half minutes devoted to the theme songs. I felt really ripped off on those as I'm getting about 15 minutes of content (I usually skip over theme songs as they are a waste of time). Worse yet is that it's one of those silent Mr. Bean type situation comedies which is always hard to watch, but in this case, it's not at all funny. If any anime that should be tossed out, it's this one, as I would not want anyone to suffer watching this.

I was about to too, since a robot panda anime sounded interesting.

I've updated the list with the new titles that I found on 7-11-07. Please check out post #1. Thanks!

Also, for those that like PC games, they had a lot of new selections there as well. I did not take names, but they was definatey a new shipment.
Overman King Gainer 3 4 5
Anyone who sees, Overman King Gainer 4 and/or 5, puh-lease pick up for me if you aren't buying for your own collection.

I bought the robot panda ones, looks like I am in for some serious disappointment, oh well.

Our big lots is now cleaned out of the dvd's, out of hundreds to start with only a few are left, they got cleaned out really fast as I would expect!

The Big Lots in Toms River, NJ only has two anime DVDs left. Some Yu-Gi-Oh DVD, and another one that wasn't sealed. I forget what it was, but the disc was probably stolen because the shrinkwrap was gone.

Went to Costco after work, stopped by the Big lots, and yup, theres a new shipment. Seems like they got a lot more pc games, but I didnt have much time to check since some of the food I bought at Costco might have spoiled if I didnt get home. I literally spent 2 minuetes shifting through the racks, pretty unorganized, and picked out what I could find. Then I realized I had only about $25 left in my wallet after spending about $100 at Costco #-o I still picked up a couple things. Probably not going back for a while since I just dont have the time, and its about a 30 min drive away. Anyways, this is what I picked up

Galaxy Angel Z Vol. 1/3 (Thought I picked up 2 T.T)
Angel Tales vol 2 (Picked up 1 last week ^_^)
Cowboy Bebop
Gundam Seed Movie 1/3
Overman King Vol 4/5 (I wonder whos interested in these ^_^")
Overman King Vol 4/5 (I wonder whos interested in these ^_^")
Have I mentioned how hot guys who wear green and toss boomerangs around are?

Seems like my Big Lots got a new shipment of stuff in:
Case Closed: Broken Dreams and Dubious Intent (old)
Gundam SEED Movies 2 and 3: The Far-Away Dawn and The Rumbling Sky (I bought the first movie from them recently too. New?)
Gundam SEED Vol 5 Archangel's Flight (New? I wonder if anyone got Vol's 3 or 4 since I need them :/)
Cowboy Bebop: Best Sessions (old)
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Vols 3 and 4 (New? I need volumes 1 and 2 still, though I might check a different Big Lots :/)

What I saw but didn't pick up:
G Gundam Vol 6
Bunch of Yukikaze stuff
Bunch of Overman stuff
Cowboy Bebop Session/Volume 6
SD Gundam DVDs
DICE DVDs
Several IGPX DVDs
Bunch of Galaxy Angel Z stuff
Bunch of Panda Z (is that the right name for that show?)
Bunch of Dragonball Z DVDs and the Dragonball GT Movie
Two different SCryed DVDs
I may have been an idiot and overlook Zeta Gundam Vol 5
I believe there was several DVDs of a series called Angel Tales
Planetes
Some series I believe was called Fantastic Children
Some series called Stratos 4
Some series I believe was called Marsday break

Well if you decide you don't want those first two sets of Zeta Gundam, I'd be happy to take them off your hands for a reasonable price. ;)

I'm looking to replace/supplement my limited edition box set with the better subtitled single version....grrr....stupid Bandai/Sunrise.:bomb:

Or if someone else can find them, I'd be happy to buy/trade those 2 volumes (1+2) since my Big Lots had only 3+4.

I've already asked Fairyland for those Zeta Gundam DVDs, picking up the first one from her, and the Vol 2 is being given to her friend.

hey, anyone found an extra copy of Overman King Gainer vol 1 (if they have it) and Angel Tales vol 3 (mine had 1, 2 and 4), I might trade something that my Big Lots has for them. Make offers I'll see if they have it.

I just picked up the following:
Sakura Taisen
DBZ Great Saiyaman Crash Course
Yukikake 2
Fantastic Children 1
Galaxy Angel 1
G Gundam 6
Z Gundam 3 and 4
Kaze no Yojimbo 2
Dice Vol 3
Gundam Seed Vol 5
Gundam Seed Movie The Rumbling Sky
Mars Day Break Vol 5
Planetes Vol 3
Overman King Gainer 3 and 5

Just wanted to keep the post alive.

Tollenz: I went to both my local Big Lots and cleaned house (all for me, 1 each--- no hording). There's still some good stuff out there. PM me a list and I can let you know if they had it.

Thanks OP.

I happened to check out Big Lots (expecting nothing), but I found one thing:

Cyborg 009 (Episodes 1-8, it looks like), for $2.00.

What's odd is that the package doesn't say "Volume 1," "#1," or anything. It just lists the episodes on the back. And it doesn't even give the numbers, jsut the episode titles. But since another dvd there had "Episodes 4-8" of the same anime, and the titles were included in the other set, I jsut got the other one. Since they were both $2.00, and one had more episodes. Duh.

By the way, I also picked up Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for the PC there, for $6.00. I don't know if there's another thread for that or not, but here's the info.

Anyone find any CA Big Lots with anime lately? Or even DVDs? Seems the BL near me have cleared out all their DVDs. Not even cheese films are left. I knew there was a reason they were all $1 a couple months ago.

Okay Josh...what is wrong with my Zeta set? I missed this on Gundam news. (Do I even want to know?)

Shawn
The Zeta Gundam boxset they release initially didn't have true subtitles. They were just dubtitles, meaning a transcript of the English dub.
The Zeta Gundam boxset they release initially didn't have true subtitles. They were just dubtitles, meaning a transcript of the English dub.
Unfortunately they weren't even dubtitles. In some places (what I've read anyways, I don't actually speak Japanese) the dub was actually closer to the Japanese than the subtitles. I think what was finally agreed upon by most posters over at AnimeOnDVD.com was that the subtitle track was a rewritten version of the dub dialouge. (Something along the following: Show was roughly translated. Dub script written. Sub script written using the dub script as a basis instead of what I believe is normal ("rough translation, sub script written, then dub script using either sub or rough translation")

There was a big long thread over at AnimeOnDVD about it (which I believe no longer exists since they revamped the forums), and when it was discovered that the 2-disk sets had an improved subtitle track which was closer to the Japanese dialouge a shitstorm came up. Unfortunately despite some letters sent to Bandai they didn't do anything about it. Of course the fact that the set was basically put together by Sunrise and not Bandai Entertainment America might have something to do with it. (Yet another example of the statement "Nobody screws up anime more than the Japanese")

Anyways, I hope this post made some sense, and hopefully I'll find those other discs sometime for a good price. (I refuse to spend more than $30 to replace my boxset discs although I shouldn't have to spend anything at all.....:bomb: )

I've been having a hankering for some new anime so I'll try to head over to Big Lots soon. Hopefully they have some Galaxy Angel. I got the first DVD at Best buy in a old "Christmas bundle" of anime DVDs. $40 for i think 8 DVDs so i gave it a chance and found out i like GA.

Thanks for the update! Now I'll have to get these myself. Dang!
It's so hard to keep up with the best versions of anime...since they are so often messed up.

New DVDs in at Big Lots today. Here is a list of what I seen.

What I bought:
Argentosoma #1
Overman King Gainer #6
Dan Doh!! #2
Planetes #6
Yu-Gi-Oh GX #1

What I left:
Dragonball Z and GT (various discs that I've not seen in prior sales)
Yukihaza 3
Case Closed (a pair that I've seen on sale before)
Yugioh (not sure what it was, but it was the older series)
Code Lyoko
SD Gundam 4
IGPX 3
Big O #4
Hoop Days #1
MS Gundam #2
Overman King Gainer #3
DICE 3
Panda Z 2, 5
Gundam Seed 5, 6
Yu Yu Hakusho (various)
Escaflowne (I forgot what number, 3 I think)
Wolf's Rain Recollections
Beyblade G Generation Special Edition #2
Cyborg 009

Not really a good selection this time. I expect these to be the same ones at your stores as well, as it seems they send the same batches everywhere with no real differences. The Beyblade one seemed really good as it had some slammer or whatever those spinner tops are called.

Also, lots of extreme fighting and other types of macho hitting each other DVDs. I've no interest in it, but there was a bit of it for people that like that sorta thing.

Also last week I've seen new anime DVDs at Dollar General with December 2007 stickers on the back of them, but I did not bother with names as it's pretty rare that others will have any in.
What I bought:

...Whoa. I know you didn't just mention buying Yu-Gi-Oh GX and diss Escaflowne in the same post. Unacceptable behavior.

But thanks for the heads-up.

It all depends on what you like. I was raised on 60s sitcoms like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Get Smart, etc, so I love cheesy comedies such as Yu Gi Oh GX. In fact, my favorite early episode is on that disc, so I am really happy with it. It's very rare for me to like anything fairly serious or full of hate such as Escaflowne, Evangelion, Bubblegum Crisis or Akira. I'll admit it's good for others, but for me I'd pass on it every time for something light hearted and funny.

Picked up

Outlaw Star Disc 3
Zeta Gundam Disc 3,4
Witch Hunter Robin Disc 4
Gundam Wing Disc 5
Escaflowne Disc 4

Plus some sort of random macho fighting DVD crap for my dad

3 dollars each

Stopped by my Big Lots today. Nothing. It doesn't look like they've had an anime shipment in quite some time. I've been hoping for Witch Hunter Robin 4-6 and Escaflowne to show up, but no luck yet. I'll keep my eye out as their DVD section was almost depleted, so I'm sure a shipment of something is due in soon.

Mine had nothing as well. Although, they did have the PC version of Phantasy Star Universe. That is the only new thing I have seen in a long time.

I hit up Big Lots! at two seperate San Diego locations today and ended up getting...

Hoop Days 1
Hoop Days 2
Witch Hunter Robin 1
Kaze no Yojimbo 1
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory 2
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam 1
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 The Motion Picture

Still looking for some others lol...

Hey guys and gals, I picked up an extra copy of Cowboy Bebop 6th Session in Vinton, VA. Does anyone happen to have a copy of Overman King Gainer volume 6 for trade?
Thats the one Overman I'm still looking for myself, Guile. If I find any, I'll grab one for you, too.
Thanks. There's a couple other Big Lots I haven't tried that are within a reasonable distance, but I probably won't venture out until later this week. If I see some I'll be sure to pick up an extra if you don't find one.

Big Lots moved into the old Service Merchandise shopping complex in Augusta, ME. This one is much better than the Bangor, ME, version, and had many DVD's. I don't remember all of them, but here are some (red = bought):

Beyblade G-Force [1]
Code Lyoko
Wolf's Rain [2, 4]
Zentrix

Thanks, Guile.

The only dvd I picked up at my local Big Lots was Hoop Days (vol 1). Pretty standard faire, but not terrible if your BL has a poor selection and nothing else looks good.

And a question about IGPX, does anyone know if any of the dvd releases had an OST cd packed in? I'm guessing not, but thought it worth asking.

Wow Blade, some titles in there I've been looking for (Crest of the Stars 3, Banner II 1, Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain). I had picked up some of the Crest/Banner series several years ago during the first shipments. I'll have to keep a better eye on my Big Lots in case they restock.

Glad you had a big selection to choose from!

The store I went to opened sometime in December, so it's quite possible that they're restocking. Best of luck in finding the rest of this awesome series.

Well, my closest Big Lots restocked. No volumes of Overman, but they had a few things I hadn't seen before....

Dan Doh!! The Super Shot volume 1
Mobile Suit Gundam F91: The Motion Picture
Outlaw Star volume 2
Steamboy (got this from the Big Lots in Eden, NC.)
Gundam Seed Movie II
Saber Marionette J DVD collection 1

BTW, they had multiple copies of Steamboy: Director's Cut in Eden, NC, and the had multiple copies of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Special Edition (2-discs) at the Martinsville location. If anyone wants me to try to pick up a copy after work tomorrow, just let me know.
Stopped by my BL yesterday. They restocked their DVDs, but no anime this time around.
Moiety, they had some Wolf's Rain, Escaflowne, and Banner of the Stars at the Martinsville Big Lots. Is there a particular volume you are looking for for those? I can check tomorrow for you.

if any can find these for me it would be great:

S-Cry-Ed Vol 1 & 2 (2-disc Anime Legends Edition)
S-Cry-Ed Vol 1, 3, 4, 6 (Platinum Edition)
Saber Marionette J: DVD Collection 3
Saber Marionette J to X Programs 1 - 2, 4 - 6
Mars Daybreak, Vol. 1
Hoop Days: Zone 1
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Chapter 2, 4, 5
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: The Empty Battlefield (Movie 1)
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Vols 1, 3, 5 - 8
Mobile Suit Gundam F91: The Motion Picture

Thanks Guile. I'm not in a super rush to pick them up, so I'll just wait/hope they come around my way. I appreciate the offer though! :)
