Blu-ray Discussion Thread - The One and Only
Where the BEST Hancock deals? Blu-ray, of course!
There arent any really. The unrated cut doesnt add that much, mainly one longer scene and the digital copy is bogus.

:(
Lost is my favorite show so its staying with me. But Amazon has it pretty cheap right now ($50).
Damn u :*( you should go read my review lol.
Should I wait on Hancock for when it's below $20, I guess
Yes, definitely. The added scene is pretty lame to boot..its not more than a rental.
Damn u :*( you should go read my review lol.
Forward it over to me. Otherwise I won't see it till it goes live. That reminds me I need your MSN Messenger or AIM screen name. PM it to me.
Hey, Gizmo, I saw HDD's review of Chuck S1, and it pretty much killed me from ever getting it on BR. Could you check it out and see if you agree with their description of it?

Its accurate. The video quality is utter garbage.. its surprising coming from NBC as HEROES looks phenomenal. but I think it was shot with different cameras or something.. can't honestly remember.

The audio quality blows because its a dobly digital 5.1 release.. Im seriously betting on a rerelease later on down the road if the show does well and goes past the second season.

I was passing on it because of the DD 5.1 sound until it was cheaper, though if the video quality is that bad, I'll pass on it on BR, unless they re-release it.

Hopefully they will re-release it, and it'll have cleaned-up video and better audio.

Here is my PQ assessment:
“Chuck: Season One” arrives on Blu-ray presented in its original aspect ratio 1.78:1 on 3 discs (one 50GB and two 25GB Discs). Many were unsure if the quality would be boosted thanks to Blu-ray due to the typically bad look on NBC... but “Chuck” shines through. I compared this to an HD episode I had saved on my DVR and found it to be much nicer - colors were more vibrant and everything just looked a bit more define. Now, it may not be as nice as “Pushing Daisies”... but this is still an excellent transfer.
4 out of 5

Personally, I think HDD shouldn't be comparing a TV Show to something like Iron Man or Incredible Hulk. Two, totally different mediums.

For those considering Lost S4...perfect PQ/AQ for a BD TV Release. I'll post a link to my review when it goes live (sometime today or tomorrow).

Maybe I'll rent the first disc from Netflix and see how it looks, and then decide on what to do with it on buying it. The DD 5.1 sound is still an irritant, though.

Then why does Chuck fail to look as good as other HD shows on BD?

4 out 5?
....

Ice2Dragon is right about this one. And HDD.
Then why does Chuck fail to look as good as other HD shows on BD?

Why? Because its filmed differently. Its one of the worst looking HD shows on TV. The BD improves upon that picture greatly. Are we going to fault films from the 1950's that don't look as good as Iron Man or The Incredible Hulk? HDD giving the show a 2 in PQ is a joke. At the very least I could see why some would give it a 3.25 but to me, its a 4.

Josh Z from DVDTalk posted the following:
The NBC broadcasts of Chuck are some of the very worst "High Definition" I've ever seen. The show has really bad, ugly photography caked in layers and layers of grain. It's soft and dupey, and often doesn't look better than VHS quality.

The Blu-ray will probably rectify some of NBC's macroblocking and motion artifact problems, but I wouldn't hold out hope for a stunning "eye candy" presentation.

And Chuck has really bad photography for a show on any major network. It's shot on 16mm, but that's not the crux of the problem.

My 4 is not alone.

HDDNews gave it a 4 for PQ
http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=6990

DVDTalk gave it a 3.5 for PQ
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/35353/chuck-the-complete-first-season/

Another site gave it an 8.8 out of 10 (so 4.25-4.50)
http://www.dbtechno.com/product-reviews/2008/11/06/chuck-the-complete-first-season-blu-ray-review/

So clearly I am not alone with the score - HDD is. But that's the thing about reviews (opinions) we all have them :)

So it should get a good rating because the show has bad PQ on the air?
I guess you can say it is true to the source, but that's hardly saying anything.

Things have to be rated in context, and that's why older films like my copy of 20 Million Miles to Earth on BD I'd give high ratings to.

(that being said, Chuck isn't unwatchable or anything, it looks pretty good, but pretty good should equal an average score for a show filmed in 2008)

Have you seen the show before? If not, its a great blind buy. Season Two is quickly becoming my favorite show on TV right now. The DD5.1 sound is a disappointment since I know Warner could have done TrueHD....but they are not likely to double-dip on this title ever again.

Just got Mamma Mia and Mummy 3 BD today...hoping they are decent flicks. Heard bad things about Mummy 3 has a film so I'll set the bar low for that one...

Yes. If you watched the HD broadcast and the BD you would be shocked at the difference between the two. The difference is very noticable. I didn't notice all the issues that HDD did, but I could clearly see the difference when A/Bing back and fourth between the HD broadcast and BD.

But this is Warner so who really knows. They once again jammed as many episodes as possible on to a disc and gave it DVD sound. It's possible this could have looked a hell of a lot better had they spent more time with it but for $30 its an easy purchase IMO. They pulled this crap with Pushing Daisies, Smallville and now it looks like Austin Powers is suffering the same fate.

At $30, it isn't so bad.

Weeds dished up better offerings though at the same price.
Looked better and offered DTS-ES 6.1.
If you like the show Shrike, it's worth a purchase.
As Gizmo said, I don't see that show being re-released to appease few.

Lionsgate knows how to do TV on BD right. Warner...well...at this point who knows if we'll even get S2 of Pushing Daisies on BD or DVD.

We never thought STRANGER THAN FICTION would get a rerelease two years later :)

I say just rent CHUCK, dont buy the blu ray.. the 5.1 track is damn awful. I dont think a high-res track would help it THAT much.. but its just the thought warner shafted high def people again.

The HDD review scared me off a bit, though I'll have to take a look at the other reviews and compare them.

I hadn't noticed the issues with the presentation, though I'll have to take a closer look in the future.

There would be no reason for Warner to re-release Chuck on BD since its a TV Show. How many times has a TV show been re-released with more features thats not called Star Trek? Unless its the "complete series" type of dealio.

As for Stranger Than Fiction, its to tie-in with Step Brothers. Just like Casino Royale was for Quantum of Solace. All are Sony titles.

At this point, I hope Warner just continues with TV on BD.

Luc Besson is great! Can't wait to get my hands on it.

I heart Amazon

Live and Let Die = $17.49
Thunderball = $17.99
Die Another Day = $17.49
From Russia with Love = $17.49

Can't beat $62.44 for 6 movies ($10.40 a movie)

Even better considering I bought Dr. No for $8.99 yesterday.

Well fox did it with 24 season 1, so there is almost a precedence, or was that just a shiny new box?
Well fox did it with 24 season 1, so there is almost a precedence, or was that just a shiny new box?
IIRC, It was just a metal box with a timer on it.
Got both Grindhouse BD flicks today...is there a certain order I should watch these in?
Yes, Planet Terror than Death Proof

I hate Weinstein so much for not releasing these as Grindhouse. The HDTV rip I have of this is awesome.

I heart Frys...picked up (mostly as gifts):

Sarah Conor Chronicles $14.99
Hellboy $9.99x2 (my bro-in-law bought the other copy for me)
Mirror Mask $9.99
Southland Tales $9.99

Was tempted to get other $9.99s, but they weren't titles I really needed/wanted...
Sorry, it's Hellboy 1. I wish Hellboy 2 was $10. :p
o ok.. maybe my fault.. i have been drinking and maybe i imagined the 2..

Is $41.99 a good price for Godfather Coppola Restoration set? I'm right on the verge of ordering this from amazon...against my wallet's wishes...

Yeah, I got my copy in mint condition from a pawn shop for 45.. so 42 new is great. I honestly doubt its gonna be cheaper than that.

IMO, one of the best deals ever on any BR set.

I bit on 10 BDs from Amazon today. All for $62.90 shipped, amazing!

6 James Bond Films
Windtalkers
Dude, Where's My Car?
The Longest Day
Sand Pebbles

Lmao.

So that one reviewer who couldnt review his way out of a paper bag reviewed Joan of Arc.. he gave video 2.5

The Blu-ray's 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer (properly presented in the movie's 2.40:1 theatrical aspect ratio) looks pretty good, even impressive in close-up shots.

However, medium and wide shots exhibit distracting and often thick edge ringing artifacts. Grain has a noisy, electronic texture. The image rarely looks film-like.

The contrast range also looks a little flat. Individual colors in the frame may
otherwise seem accurate, but flesh tones are usually quite drab. The film has some nice photography by Besson's frequent collaborator Thierry Arbogast, but the Blu-ray is an over-processed mess.

We must have been watching two different movies. Grain was only apparent in a few scenes at the start but showed near the last 30 or so minutes of the film. The war scenes looked phenomenal, I agree that the contrast was slightly off but I don't think it merited a 2.5??? I dont understand their logic what so ever :(

Joan of Arc comes out this week? I didn't hear very good things about the movie, but I loves me some Mila J, I may get it eventually...

Yeah, its the unrated cut. Its hella long.

As i wrote in my review.. its not for everyone. This is young Mila before Resident Evil.. I think four or five years before that movie. Its 20 on amazon.

So seems we are getting Saw 5 on January 20th.. Can't wait..

additionally I was not aware that Saw 1 uncut came out in Germany. People are saying better pq and aq. Gotta find a cheap way to get this!

Yes, Saw 1 is available for import. Its expensive though last time I checked. Itd be hard to NOT have better pq/aq... the uncut version though just has a few longer scenes/more gore during the fence guy's scene and amandas scene where she cuts the guy open for the key shows more of the organs and her rifling thru it.

I have the DVD unrated/extended cut...
