Blu-ray Discussion Thread - The One and Only
Gizmo, will you be getting Chuck early? I have it pre-ordered from Warner but if it turns out you're right about them cramming episodes onto fewer discs (although I can't possibly imagine how they'd do 3 discs for a season of a 1-hour show) I'd appreciate an early warning.

As for now, I am eagerly awaiting your thoughts on the Godfather Collection. It's probably my most anticipated title for the rest of the year.
Yes, as well as Supernatural. Both are not coming out in Blu until November though...unless it gets pushed up like Torchwood did. However with the disc shortage...don't count on it.

Godfather just arrived.... :)
Yeah, I noticed that from the review on HDD. Would expain all the ugly compression artifacts, if they're trying to cram 300 minutes on a disc.

Yeah, I think that gives me reason to pass on it on BR.

Hello, re-release anyone, ala 5th Element?
That's pretty disappointing. I still don't think that is enough from keeping from owning this show. At least they ARE releasing it in HD. If I find it for ~$40, it's mine.

Godfather is packed in a 4 case BD Amray (much like Smallville, Terminator etc.) houses in a nice cardboard case. Attached to the back is a small booklet with info on the films and bonus disc.
Would you say it's worth the 60-something Borders is charging?
Its cheap on Amazon again.

But at less than $20 a film...yeah.

I'm going to sell mine as soon as I'm done with it though. Not a fan of gangster movies.

Does it have all of the extras that were on the DVD boxset?

I don't have the DVD set but the booklet says something like "All the DVD special features plus... [Blu-ray stuff in HD]"

I'll buy it from you.

Hey Guys. I decided to start building a Blu Ray Movie Collection. Now I'm really looking for some good cheap blu rays at the moment. I'm thinking of buying with amazon either from them or the sellers on there. Any Recommendations on some Good Cheap Blu Rays? Also if anyone has BD's for sale here I'd be interested in buying them ;) Thanks!

BTW. First BD I bought a couple of mins ago was 28 Weeks Later for 15.78 shipped Brand New. I heart this movie. :D

As someone who's currently trying to build up a nice collection, stick with amazon. It's almost always cheaper, even when movies go on sale B&M.
Just a heads-up - if you're looking for cheap used BRs, check out CD Warehouse.

I picked up I Am Legend today for $12.
Hey, it's been a while. A friend of mine is always telling me about his BR finds there. What location was this at?

Town Center. The location near Lassiter is crap.

Also, some HDs there as well, around $6-$9.

I've always wanted to see Clockwork Orange. It's an older movie and the only reason I haven't bite yet is because my brain thinks it maybe too dated. I know the movie was well ahead of it's time and all but does it still hold up well? Is it one of Kubricks best films?
I know the movie was well ahead of it's time and all but does it still hold up well?
I like it and think it's hilarious every time I watch it. Especially the part where the guy daydreams himself with a big ass grin whipping Jesus. lool

What? All of Kubrick's films beginning with The Killing still stand up today besides Lolita and that's only due to crippling censorship issues.

Clockwork Orange is my favorite Kubrick behind Dr. Strangelove.

If you are like me and want the extras T2, Total Recall and I think The Fith Element will all be a let down. All have less then the DVD counterpart when it comes to that. Video quality may be better but the upconversion on atleast the player I have looks good enough for me.

That seems to be the word around the water cooler. Blu-ray.com called it THE best looking disc of the year.

This direct digital approach has given Speed Racer a stunning visual sheen and a truly flawless picture. Colors practically leap off of the screen and the movie’s many small details are rendered with a crystal clear clarity that I’ve never seen equaled on home video. Black levels are deep and contrast is excellent. I can’t even begin to accurately convey how amazing Speed Racer looks on Blu-ray. This is THE definitive reference disc of the year and will be utilized the world over as a demo disc for Blu-ray for years to come.

- Blu-ray.com Review

The Digital Bits seems to agree....

It's just damn near perfect, and I guarantee it's better than anything any of you saw in the theatres. Colors absolutely burst off the screen, contrast is outstanding and detail is spot-on. You're going to notice that some DNR was used here and there - you'll notice it on faces, in particular Mom and Pops Racer - but that's not something that was done for Blu-ray. I noticed it in that original screening. It's a stylistic choice on the part of the filmmakers. But trust me, the detail everywhere else is crisp and exactly as it should be. There is some very light digital compression artifacting here and there, but it's very well hidden by all the fast movement on screen. Trust me, I'm watching this in native 1080p on a 110" screen, and I really had to look for it. Speed Racer is right up there with the best Blu-ray video I've seen yet.

- The Digital Bits Review

And to top it off, the AVSForum Official Review gave the video 100/100.

I have to say, I had very little interest in buying this but I might just now for the reference video to test when I go TV shopping soon.

graf,

Keep in mind TDB has been pimping Speed Racer for a loooooong time. I had no doubt they would say the BD is perfect. Is it? Dunno, my copy is in the mail somewhere. Personally I'd wait to read other reviews first because while the disc may look pretty, the film still sucks.

I should (hoping) be getting a handful of Universal's latest titles today...so I'll let you all know how they look. Apparently The Thing dropped the 80 minute documentary....

I respect that, but I mean 3 reviews calling the video perfect or near perfect is pretty convincing thus far.

I'll be interested to hear some of the new Paramount titles. I'm about to pull the trigger on the Halloween pack and thinking about the Comedy pack.
Reference quality disc for PQ, though story's a snoozer?
The picture is near perfect, but it is absolutely not 100% perfect. The backgrounds and colors are simply something out of this world. Extremely crisp and lively. Unfortunetly some of the close ups on the actors are a little soft in some scenes and exceptional in others. If i had to rank it i'd go with a 95%. It is definetly something everyone should witness at least once. My eyes almost hurt because all the colors just popped off the screen.

And yes, the story is fairly straight forward, but i didn't really expect too much from it anyways.

Just FYI, after looking at a couple reviews, the close ups of the actors faces looking a little weird might not be the fault of the transfer, but the movie itself. Apparently they did some post work on the people that play the Speed Racer guys parents to make the actors look younger.

I had a feeling Speed Racer would be something to marvel at on BR .
I don't think it will be on sale for a while , Warner is going to have to try to make up $ on the home video .

There is a Blu-Ray/DVD new release booklet at Best Buy with 2 coupons on the inside back cover .

Double Reward Zone points on any Blu-ray purchase
&
10% OFF any single DVD or Blu-ray DVD purchase

they both expire Sept. 30 2008 .

Now I have to run out and buy Speed Racer after reading all that. I was having second thoughts on spending $30 on a movie, but it sounds like it's absolutely worth it.
Got the horror pack today...

Oh man, they got slaughtered. All are missing extra features....this is really, really bad.
Wow, that's really disappointing although I almost suspected something like that when it works out to something like $13 per movie at Amazon. Is the PQ/AQ good at least? Even without extras I still think I might want to pick up Dawn of the Dead.

What's missing? The Lost Tape: Andy's Terrifying Last Days Revealed, Special Report: Zombie Invasion, Undead (Deleted) Scenes, Splitting Headaches: Anatomy of Exploding Heads, Attack of the Living Dead, and Raising the Dead. Wow...way to drop almost every extra, Universal!
