Is there a site that simply tells you which version (HD/BD) is better, without getting into the various PQ/SQ scores? Because, most of my collection right now exists of exclusives to either format, and soon I will be having to make choices.

Thanks.

BTW, up to two BDs as I bought Layer Cake last night (both of my BDs are Daniel Craig...:whistle2:k)
Not that I've seen, though for most cases that I've seen between BR and HD discs, it looks like they're almost always the same if they were released at the same time or just about the same time.

For movies that were HD-DVD only and they're moving to BR, that might change somewhat depending on the encode and if they do any cleanup.

Most of my collection is exclusive to the specific format they came out on, though when there was a choice, and not any real price difference, I went with BR. When there was a price difference, such as with Michael Clayton, Appleseed and a few other more recent purchases, I went with the cheaper option, which was HD-DVD.

amazon lowered the price on some pre orders

shinobi - 10.95
short circuit - 10.95
weeds s3 - 24.95

probably others, but thats what i just noticed since i preordered them

and most non fox catalog titles are 18.95 not 19.95

Sweet, looks like Universal is going to be using DTS-HD MA on all their titles.

Helloooooooooo Children of Men.
It's hard to imagine that movie sounding any better.

I cant wait for TWBB on Blu-Ray.

I will be picking that and Cloverfield and whenever they feel like releasing Sweeney Todd.
You didn't like There Will Be Blood?

That was one of my top movies of the year along with Sweeney Todd.
I haven't seen it yet, to be honest. I can't suffer through theaters anymore, partially due to cost, and partially due to the severe lack of manners people have in talking, texting, ringing phones, etc.

It hit a crescendo when the folks in front of me were asking each other about the plot to one of the POTC movies. DISCUSSING THE FINER PLOT POINTS OF A GODDAMNED DISNEY MOVIE! They quieted down after I reminded them that home video was made for folks like them (a cute one-liner I think I grabbed from someone on this site a bit back) - but the point remains that I have, at this point, a near anuerysm each time I go to the theater now.

Seriously, I go to the theater now more than 5 times a year now - at best. I'll do it for bigtime action movies (I'm contemplating Iron Man), or if someone else is paying. ;)

Also, why spend $25 between tickets and popcorn and soda and shit (my wife insists on popcorn and sodie, now matter how much I resist - it's part of the 'movie experience,' sez she) when I can buy the BD at this point?

Short story long, I very much look forward to seeing TWBB on BD, but have yet to see it.

the irony is that I don't shut the fuck up or sit still when watching a movie at home, which drives my wife up the fuckin' wall
I'll have to remember that line when someone's talking in the movies.

And I think I'm like you about the theatres, myke, if it's someone else's nickel, such as free tickets, I'll go. Same goes for the big action movies as well, or if it's showing on the IMAX.

Between two tickets, popcorn and soda, yes, I could buy the BR and show it at home. Which is why I've been going through and picking up the BR's or the HD-DVD's for the good stuff I missed over the past few years.

Exactly, ive invested enough money into my home theater and blu-ray collection because of it. Me an my fiance would rather stay home and watch a $15 blu-ray than pay the $35-40 it costs us to goto the movies and get a horrible experience.

Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,

We've got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.

Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We've picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we'll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.

Here's in the pipeline:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we'll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg's outback masterpiece at the same time.

As a special thank you to our newsletter subscribers, we'd like to offer you all $10 off any order of $60 or more placed on on criterion.com through Monday, May 26. Just use the code OFBT and you'll also qualify for free shipping.

Enjoy spring!

Not to mention heard of most of them... lol

Can we get some that AREN'T a waste of a Blu Ray disc well... and a waste of an HD pic quality.
Because....you suck?
Because I'm not some Blockbuster freak who watches all sorts of crap at the arthouse?
Because I'm not some Blockbuster freak who watches all sorts of crap at the arthouse?
Nope, pretty sure I pegged it.
Nope, pretty sure I pegged it.
Not everyone likes what you like, dickhead.

I've never even heard of any of those.

You may not like or even have heard of the titles in Criterion's first BluRay lineup, but the fact that they are finally moving to an HD format is really good news for anyone interested in classic/foreign/and yes, arthouse films.

I'm rather glad my Criterion DVD collection is just two titles as I won't have to do a mass replacement sale.

My original comment was bait for someone to tell me why I should care/buy these films I've never heard of, rather than the retarded comments that followed.
Rather than bait with a sarcastic comment, you can ask what the deal is.
How is it sarcastic?

'I don't care about any of those.'

It's the absolute truth.

You've gone loony cochese.
If you made any kind of post about something you were interested in, and everyone responded with:

"So what."
"I don't are...... at all"

What would you think?

Well, to be fair, you could've just asked someone if there was any title in there worth recommending. Or even bluntly, what the big deal was.

But yeah, I've only heard of half of those titles and the ones I know I'm not interested in picking up.

Definitely keeping an eye on Criterion's BluRay lineup, though, because there's a lot of movies they have handled before that I really am interested in.
My original comment was bait for someone to tell me why I should care/buy these films I've never heard of, rather than the retarded comments that followed.
Yeah, that was a sound plan.

Instead of actually doing any outside research or you know even just straight up asking "never heard of any of those, anything worth checking out", you reply with basically "I don't care about about any of those and oh yeah, I don't suck...hell, I've never even heard of those jerkoff arthouse films!"

That's going to motivate me to post anything of value? Acting like that doesn't really makes you sound like an open-minded guy.
Criterion on Blu: there goes my pocketbook.
Time to clean the slate.

Will I be able to keep up and collect them all since they're starting over? Hmmm...

I guess the other reason I'm less than ambivalent about not only those titles, but Criterion on BD as a whole. I'm already aware that most, if not all, Criterions are better than their standard DVD cousins, if any double dipping applies (Close Encounters, for example). They are also 2-3x the price, retail-wise. I see 'Criterion on BD' and I can't help but assume that there will also be a Criterion-sized markup over regular BD prices, and I can't see the worth. You have to wonder if you'll get the same 'jump' in quality as you do with regular BD, considering the higher quality of most of their DVDs (Seven Samurai, etc).

1080p really isn't a factor to me either. Right now the best TV I could watch it on is 1080i, and I have ways of upscaling regular DVDs (Criterion included) to the best quality that I can see. Right now I buy HD and BD titles that I either don't own, or know I'll be wanting to watch for a long time - and usually at discounted prices.

Are these titles that people are going to spend $50 on (as a random, but possible price point)?

from the email

"Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we'll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95"

makes me think that the pricing between the two will be similar

Well, that's one. And a start. I'll withhold further judgement until more pricing comes along.

That's the price of the regular Criterion on Amazon. Will the BD have the same 2:1 crop? How much better will it look?

These things and more still beg me to ask will it be worth the upgrade price? I'm not one of those people who get wet when 'Criterion' is mentioned.

And I suppose now that I go back and re-read it I've heard of two (Bottle Rocket) and watched one (TLE).

So, all of my posts have been deleted  Wow, the middle ones I can understand because I was just fucking with him but the last one actually had a point.

Criterion has said the Blu-Ray disc prices will be the same as the DVD set prices.

I seriously blew a load in my pants seeing Bottle Rocket finally in Criterion... ON BD NO LESS!!

It can't get here soon enough.

Although I'm only familiar with 20% of the movies Criterion releases, they have the best box art in the biz.. hands down.

I want to watch all their movies based on the covers alone.
So, all of my posts have been deleted  Wow, the middle ones I can understand because I was just fucking with him but the last one actually had a point.
Next time, make it clearer that there's actually a point there. ;)

Hard to tell with all the sniping going back and forth, of course.

So they'll priced the same as their DVDs. aka, expensive but still the same.

Criterion editions are not just about quality, but about bringing to light films that probably wouldn't have gotten a chance to be featured.
And they go about it properly with clean transfers and copious, informative supplements.

That would explain why I have never heard of any of them, lol. Though looking on Wikipedia at the list of Criterion flicks, I wouldnt mind Seven Samurai, Chasing Amy, and Fear & Loathing in LV on Blu-ray.

i think chasing amy looked bad on criterion

i can check when i get home but i remember it being very grainy and colors were off a little

not one of their best efforts
I'd check out I am legend. Will smith looks delicious in 1080p...(in a non gay way)
I, Robot is a much better choice then. ;)

Sometimes, but not always. The Rock, Seven Samurai, Chasing Amy come to mind.

But yes, they tend to be not mainstream works.
They do have oddballs.
See their laserdisc collection.
Yeah, I've read about that.

When Seven Samurai comes to BD though, I'll be the first one to order. Those titles just don't do anything for me. I barely have time to watch the movies or play the games I have without spending $30-$40 on blind-buys.

Reading and deciphering charts is a time-consuming process.
I really wish the Indiana Jones movies were on Blu. I am a sad panda!
Damn. I was just thinking the same exact thing, after seeing a commercial for the individual release of the DVDs this month.
