blur - Gen. Discussion & Info
As much as i love blur keeps resetting my stats. I was level 10. But now im level 1. Am I the only one with this problem?
Hasn't happened to me yet, but I see a lot of people (other than me) being disconnected during races. There are often 2-3 people disconnected out of a 12+ person race by the end, though I don't know if that could include players who leave on their own or have bad connections.

That's really the only problem I've seen with the game so far. I'm really enjoying the beta, and I'll definitely buy the finished product.
Not a fan of racing games, but I find myself playing this more than MW2.
Same here. I got burned out on MW2 pretty quick. Taking a break from it before the new maps come out. :)

On another note, the disconnections/problems don't surprise me. It is a beta after all. I haven't experienced anything that made me go "wow, this is terrible." It's pretty fun for a racer.
lol its funny when i guy will go to great lengths to stay in 19th place!!
When you can't fight for first, you try to fight to not be last. I've done that myself more than once.

Also, for the people the level reset on (had it happen to me last night), did your game freeze before hand? Did for me anyways and was just wondering if anything happened to those people or if it was just random.

I finally played this afternoon and really like the game. It's a lot of fun, but I have a newb question, probably a general 360 question unless what was happening was a bug - how do you set voice chat to friends only? Somebody was chatting and I have to say that unless it is friends, I find voice chat *really* annoying. Nothing ruins the experience like some scratchy voice going on and on. So I tried to figure out how to change the chat to friends only and I couldn't find an option for that. I hit the xbox button and went to the chat/im tab and it theoretically lets me set a type of chat, although none of the options are just friends only. In any case I tried setting it to Party Chat, with friends allowed, but the guy was still chatting away. Worse, he seemed to be talking to himself as his was the only voice I heard (and in German, or something, so I couldn't understand it.) So just in case this guy happened to be on my friends list, I changed it to invite only and invited no one, but still his voice was chatting away. So how do you do this, or is this just broken in Blur?

Anyway, fun game, but I'd really like to kill the chat in the game, at least from non-friends.

I've started having a ton of fun with Blur. I find that people actually using voice chat really makes the game. There was one guy the other night who was in 1st and would let out a cry of pain everytime he got hit by a lightning, so we all upped the dosage of lightning on him after.

When I first started playing the beta, I was kinda "meh". I don't know if it was the 5th race, but it really clicked with me. I've got to be over 30 races now and am at level 10.

I'm absolutely loving this game now. The class A races with a full room of 20 racers is just crazy fun. I'm kinda competitive and can get annoyed if I don't do well. With the powerups and craziness, I don't even mind coming in 7th place or something. Now, if I came in 20th place, I might get upset. :D

Someone else mentioned voice chat. I haven't heard a single voice in all the races I've done. Maybe I've got it turned off or something. I can see interaction after blasting someone with a powerup being great.

Same here, at first I was frustrated by the loose controls, the confusing power ups, and the generic courses. Now, I've played about 30 races, and all those troubles seem so far away. I am now generally comfortable with the controls, I know what most of the power ups do, and I'm familiar with most of the courses. I know that the red shunt = red shell, the green turbo = mushroom, and blue lightning = blue shell. It's just like Mario Kart, except better.

As far as voice chat goes, some games I've played people didn't talk, in others they did. You'll have more luck with people talking in the 20 man races (since there's more people). Hearing the battlecries, the smacktalk, the rivalries, that stuff really makes the game.

P.S. I just got done with a race where some random guy and I were singing Whitney Houston together.

Just saying... :)

Blue lightning does not really equal blue shell. The blue shell seeked out the lead racer and hit them no matter what. The blue lightning just puts those 3 electric cloud things out in front of the lead racer. They can be "easily" avoided.

The blue lightning was the last one for me to figure out. I'd get it, use it and see nothing happen. I thought it put those electic clouds behind me. Finally from the startup screen description, I saw that it puts them out in front of the lead racer.

I was in 1st place just a bit ago. I think about 5 guys behind me triggered the blue lightning at the same time. There were like 15 of those cloud things I had to try and get through. I hit 2 of them and was no longer in first place. :whistle2:(

Yeah, I actually like the lightning better than the shell, you at least have a chance to avoid them.

Fun fact: Earlier today, I was in a race and was in like 3rd place or something, so I kept using the blue lightning to slow down the guy in 1st place. I thought lightning meant a guaranteed hit, I didn't know it just put avoidable bolts in front of them. So while I was doing this, I noticed that lightning kept appearing in the distance. "1st place must be right near me and is getting hit by those bolts!" I deduced. Nope, turns out I was in 1st place the whole time and I was bolting myself for over two minutes straight

I always thought this was messed up and it's the 3rd time it's happened. I'll be last, or close to it, yet I still get the award for fastest lap. I know position doesn't reflect lap times, but it always just felt backwards to me.

On an unrelated note, getting lightning as your bribe powerup, it's just so awesome as it's practically guaranteed to cause chaos.

Yes, but they can still shoot crap from behind them and try to hit you.

I know it makes sense, it just doesn't feel right is all I'm saying.

I really wish I could turn off voice chat. It sure isn't "making the game" for me. Different strokes and such. I guess I could plug in a headset and not put it on, but that's annoying. Other then that, though, I'm really enjoying it. I think I'll be putting in a preorder. I have yet to win a race, though. :) Fourth is my best finish so far.

I just upped my first place finishes by 4. I went into the Class A races. Got into a lobby where there were only 4 of us. We did like 5 races and I won 4 of them. Then suddenly the lobby started to fill up. Last race I got 2nd out of like 10.

It's not all about 1st place finishes. I consistently come in 3rd-5th place and I always end up with the most fans, which is what the game is really about.

I like the fan aspect of the game and it keeps me coming back for more.

Having the most fans only helps you level up. Racing games are always about getting first.

I think the point was that the "fans" feature, and it unlocking stuff, makes it not feel like the only thing you've done is lost. Having said that, I really would like to come in first at least once. :)

The people who come in first are always a much higher level than the rest of the racers. Coincidence?

Why do level 15's always come in first place when there are a bunch of level 5's in the room?

Will there be a matchmaking system so level 20's can't race level 1's?

Because they have raced more and know the levels? I'm not seeing the point your making. The best cars are still the ones you get right from the beginning in the beta.

For those who played the Mod Nation Racers beta, which game is more FUN? I really like the Blur demo and one racing game will last me for awhile. I love the art style of Mod Nation Racers but have no idea how fun it is. I think both these titles are now coming out around the same time. Thanks.

Team Racing!

This was posted by a dev on the Bizarre forum:

"Team racing is in for launch and works out the winner by adding up the Driver Score earned at the end of race. Friendly fire is off by default in the playlists (so you dont have to worry about whacking your teammates when using barge etc and shunt will only target enemies)

Also we have Team Motormash which is great fun and imo better than the free for all version in the beta

Um...not true. You do unlock better cars as you level up.

The ones I have been unlocking have better grip and faster acceleration.

If you can't see that I can't help you see my point.

Kevin
Unlocked cars aren't nessecarily better. The Defender SVX is the last car you unlock for D class but it's pretty crappy for anything other than the one off-road track. I typically use the Focus RS instead of the Camaro/SVX which both unlock later and have no trouble placing high. In B class my friend insists that the Scisrsorsro is better than than the Ford GT. I watched him go on a 14x win streak so I guess he knows what he's talking about. It's not like there's a huge different in stats either. The Ford GT has like 0.5 points more speed and the Sciscsoirsorso has like 0.5 more grip. And in A class, almost no one uses the truck even though you get the first car from the beginning and the truck unlocks at rank 10.

And it's not like it takes that long to get to level 10. 2-3 hours maybe.

I was in the Modnation beta but the frame rate was terrible so I didn't stick around long.
Did they raise the level cap to 15? I got to Lv10 then my stats got reset back to 1.
No, they didn't. When kevret posted that people were level 15 I thought they had raised the cap. I went to check but the cap was still at 10. Alot of people are getting their rank reset. It hasn't happened to me yet but hopefully they fix it. Probably happens when the game freezes while auto-saving.
Is this going to be a full priced retail game? I like it, but it doesn't feel like a $50-$60 game to me.

I guess I answered my own question here. $56? No thanks.
The beta is only a handful of the maps/levels from the full game. It doesn't include the fact that Blur has a full singleplayer mode and split screen racing. Just the fact that it has split screen racing is enough for me. Not enough racing games feature that anymore and I used to play racing games with my wife all the time.

And 4-player split screen too. As far as games not supporting split-screen, that's certainly been true on the 360. On the Wii it's more prevalent. The feature I really want to see, though, and I guess we'll only find out once it arrives, is will multiple local people be able to play online at the same time on the same console? So split-screen while playing an online race. Mario Kart Wii allows that (for 2 local players anyway), and I hope this game will offer at least 2 players.

Halo 3 offers it, so that'd be a nice addition. Yeah, we play Mario Kart split screen on the Wii, it's just sad to me that games we would play together like Pure, GRID, etc don't offer it.

I really like this game, but I never win. Not even close usually. Anybody have tips to share? Just get me to the middle of the pack and I'll be happy. :)

In any case I can't wait for the full game to be out.

In case anyone is interested, details of the small update were posted on the Bizarre forums.. looks like mostly behind the scenes stuff.

Hi everyone,

If you've played the Blur Beta this morning you'll have noticed you need to download a small update to play today. This is to address the occasional connectivity issues and rare crashes that you have reported to us. Thanks to those who filled in our survey and helped us track down these issues! More detail of what the update contains is below..

  • Bandwidth – Optimisations which reduce the amount of traffic being sent around the network, thus improving lag.
Stability – Fixes for rare 'Dirty Disc' errors and rare game crashes
Connectivity – Prevent players trying to get into lobbies when they won’t be able to see everybody, improving matchmaking times
Disconnects - We now show more informative messages when players are disconnected from game sessions.
Host Migration- Fixed occasional random disconnects when migrating to a new host.
Split Lobbies - Reduced the frequency of 'split lobbies' which were occurring occasionally

Other gameplay improvements (wall riding, powerup shuffling etc) have been addressed but will feature in the main release of Blur. We're using this period of the beta to make sure the changes to our networking give us the expected results when thousands of people are playing together

Thanks to everyone who's played so far - please let us know if you encounter any other issues

Thanks for that post The_Cang. A friend of mine was complaining about the "wall riding", so I forward it on to him. Too bad they didn't put that fix into the beta, but oh well.

Rank cap has been raised to 15 since yesterday. There's a new challenge pack, 2 new mods, and 2 new cars. The CXR is really the only thing I'm interested in but there's so many fans to earn between 10 and 15 D:
Public Beta goes live tomorrow...hopefully a rank increase and more vehicles go along with it.
Any more rank increase and the demo will be like half of the game. Wont happen.
