Bruno Sammartino's wrestling topic
If the WWE can manage to keep the momentum they've built up with the last couple of RAWs, they might be able to knock TNA back a step or two. However, I don't really see how ROH can really compete since their entire livelihood is based on live events and DVD sales.
I don't think WWE needs to worry about knocking back TNA. Even when WWE is God awful it still is better than TNA, and that's sad.
Also, a Congressional hearing on pro wrestling will be held on 1/23, which is no. 2, behind baseball, as a sport that Congress will be looking at.
It's bad enough that the Congress of the United States is wasting time and money on a professional, competitive sport.

That it will continue to waste time and money investigating what amounts to modern theater is even more offensive.
Cheers for this, though the 128kbps hurts it a little.

I don't know if you're any good at finding themes or not, but there's one that constantly eludes me.. and it kills me because they only used it once and it was their debut, I was there live, the crowd was dead and it would've been a perfect recording.

I'm looking for the very first Cade and Murdoch theme. You can hear it in their "debut" video in the background.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=mxsa820scKI

They only used it once. I doubt i'll ever find it.
Man that video annoys me. Cade & Murdoch clearly show some great character there, so why was that dropped? I know they're still "rednecks" but their characters seemed much more developed in that package and that really doesn't shift over to TV any longer. A real pity if you ask me, and how long were those two tag champs for? Did anyone even notice... stupid creative.
It's about time Jake got the help he needs. Hopefully it works out for him.
That's great. I hope they can get Jake help and maybe even give him the position with the creative team he's always wanted.

Christ, that's horrible news about Heenan. I'm not a prayin' man, but I may change for a minute (for whatever that's worth in the metaphysical world ;)) for his sake.

I wouldn't quite go that far, as TNA has had some incredible shows that were better than WWE's offerings, but they're fewer and further between than they were in '05, when TNA was regularly trouncing WWE's PPVs quality-wise.

Would you say until Vince Russo came aboard TNA?

No, they'd been putting on sub-par shows since about the beginning of '06, but Russo's return did lead to a huge drop-off in quality for Impact and PPVs as a whole, with poor shows becoming the rule and not the exception.

TNA used to have those amazing X Division matches, but now it's getting to the point where it might be worse than WCW. They were really good back then but damn, what the hell happened? WWE is not great week in week out either but I can't even sit through a full two hours of TNA. It's too cheesy and set up and most of the guys are not very interesting. Of course this is all my opinion but they are going nowhere fast.

The music switched between dramatic Milliionaire music to something out of Match Game... could TNA please decide what decade of Game Show they'd like to... parody, I guess.

- The decision to use Eric Young in the main event at the Turning Point pay-per-view when Scott Hall no-showed was a last minute decision made by Jeff Jarrett.

Apparently Samoa Joe had first suggested Homicide take Hall's place but TNA management told Joe that Homicide wasn't over enough or good enough for the main event spot. According to sources, Homicide heard about this and was very upset with management.

*insert cliche Patrick Stewart head-in-hands picture here*

^

That's fucked up. That would be like someone no showing a main event tag match for Raw, suggesting Carlito & getting Jeff Hardy instead cause "he's over".

Speaking of TNA pissing people off. Judging the spoilers for the next few weeks, expect Senshi to job to a lot of people before his final match at Final Resolution.

Oh and here's a little spoilers for the Impact after new years.

The Outsiders are booked for a match at Final Resolution(against who? I don't know). Samoa Joe comes out bitching to Jim Cornette and eventually gets the match changed so that Hall's out & Joe's in.

Seems they're going with a heel turn with Joe with something about him being bitter with TNA management

It boggles the mind who the fuck writes this stuff. Not even Russo can write crap this bad on his own.

*Edit- Guile, should've said "Make it so".

If they used, say, Chris Harris, or Sting, or fuckin' SOMEONE who was in the main event scene in the first place to replace Hall, and then said "this person is more over and a more believable main event guy than Homicide," I would agree.

But Eric Young is comic relief, and never been a credible wrestler, let alone a "main event" wrestler.

The better comparison would be telling Carlito to sit down and replacing him with Super Crazy.

What role did Eric Young play on Impact last night? I noticed last week that they didn't play off of his main event involvement to turn him into a serious character, and he was right back to "drinkin' champion" bullshit.

TNA's getting a one hour special on Spike TV for the TNA/NJPW show -
--TNA's one-hour TV special on the 1/4 Tokyo Dome show will air 1/17 after Impact and again at 9 p.m. on 1/18. The show is based around a double title match with Kurt Angle defending both the IWGP & TNA titles against Yuji Nagata. I guess that tells you the result of the match.
That could be a very, very good match (and as a result, show). Definitely a must-watch for me.

I don't think they're making Joe a heel.

It seems like they're doing more of a Stone Cold 'tweener.

Speaking of that, why haven't they had Kurt Angle parading around with IWGP title on Impact? Did the promotion put a halt to that and tell TNA they can't do that or what?

Well, once New Japan and TNA entered into a partnership of sorts, TNA nixed mentioning the IWGP title Angle holds, as TNA wants this partnership to go well, and the belt Angle has isn't the true IWGP title - it's the IWGP belt that Lesnar stole from New Japan, and that Angle won from Lesnar on an IGF show. The belt isn't recognized by New Japan (presently) as the IWGP title, but could be once a unification match for the belts happens.

Angle versus Nagata airing on US TV?

Wow. Just when I had TNA all figured out.

They should do more to emphasize international stuff. Bring up Tomko's IWGP (?) Tag Title reign w/ Giant Bernard. Bring over guys (and go back and look at what TNA did with Liger and also w/ Muta - and do the complete opposite of those!).

Wrestling promotions, with a handful of exceptions, seem to incorrectly assume fans aren't interested in foreign promotions, or their wrestlers' work over there. You even have WWE dumbing down Japanese names because "Yoshihiro Tajiri" or "Shoichi Funaki" are really hard to say, evidently.

PRIDE is very popular in the states, and is (was) a wholly Japanese MMA company for a long, long time. WCW did stuff w/ NJPW, and never really capitalized on it. You can't just bring in Kensuke Sasaki and tell people how awesome he is. Show us.

Although a failed promotion from the start (shame, really), Florida's MLW promoted Satoshi Kojima exactly the way an American group should use foreign talent.

When I met Angle awhile back at an autograph signing, he was carrying around both the TNA title and the IWGP title. So I think it's TNA that doesn't want to push that fact.

o man how i loved those shows..got to go live a few times..

TNA has brought up Tomko's IWGP Tag title - they only did that when they reached the agreement with New Japan, and even showed clips of him teaming with Bernard on Impact. PRIDE, when it was alive, had a small, but dedicated following in the U.S., but it was far from "very popular".

I'd say PRIDE was more popular when compared to UFC than TNA is when compared to WWE... I have a lot of friends into MMA and I used to be pretty into it as well and we would always catch PRIDE shows.

I preferred PRIDE to UFC too, but that doesn't make them more popular than the UFC was. PRIDE was the worldwide leader at one time thanks to them being so huge in Japan, but they didn't have anywhere near that level of success in the U.S.

Yeah I know... I was just saying that I thought PRIDE was pretty popular when considering the MMA business as a whole...

Random notes about the new American Gladiators - Daniel Puder tried out as a contestant, but failed to make the cut. Also missing the cut was Matt "M-Dogg 20" Cross, who tried out but missed the height requirement. Making the cut (as a Gladiator) is Tough Enough 4 contestant Justice Smith, who'll be going by the name "Justice" when the show premieres.

Also, the big Samoan gladiator "Toa" is The Rock's cousin, finally proving that every single Samoan is related somehow.

caught tna...it started off strong, but then went down pretty bad towards the end of the show

petey getting the heavyweight shot surprised me...not really surprised bg is still there (I am that daniels isn't) but would've been more pleased if he wasn't

I'm actually interested in Angle/Nagata where JJ/Russo won't have a hand in the booking. At least I hope that's the case.

I wonder how much time they'll give the match.

20 minutes at least.

Today's OVW TV (Finally figured out how to cap them w/ the new cable box).

Features Stu Sanders and Paul Birchall taking on OVW tag champs Shawn Spears and Colt Cabana, OVW TV Champion James Curts (KC James), and main event OVW title match between Matt Sydal and Champion Mke Kruel.

word. I'll try to get back to doing this again - thanks to being snowed in, I had time to figure out how to capture video and encode it.

Well, figured out why this happened. Expect more of this soon, since they're dropping the old feud with Atlas. Seems Atlas got a call up to WWE and will be debuting within a few weeks(so expect him sometime around new years). Doesn't mention which brand, but I'm guessing either Smackdown or ECW.

His gf/wife, who is a radio host in Louisville, dropped on her show that he'd be on Raw within three weeks. Which, if it has any merit, would perhaps be dropped by the WWE in the short term due to their hatred for leaks.

According to gerweck.net, WWE Tagged Classics DVD sets are on sale in some K-Marts. So far, just Unforgiven '02 and '03, and No Mercy '02 and '03 sets are available. Hopefully these do well enough for WWE to expand them to include the UK-released Tagged Classics in some form.

GABE on ROH

I have never done this. I will now. The Dec. 29th & 30th Manhattan doubleshot shows started really coming together in the last few days. I have the adrenaline going two weeks out just thinking about them. Normally I don’t get this way until two or three days before the shows. I am so excited about how the cards are shaping up that for the first time I will give a personal guarantee right now that these will be two blowaway events. They are going to be that loaded.

I am also very pleased that the “Glory By Honor VI” DVDs are out. We are all really proud of both these shows. They really were a pinnacle this year. I still say that the Misawa & KENTA vs. Morishima & Marufuji match from Night 1 is slightly better on DVD than the Misawa vs. KENTA match from Night 2, although Night 2 was more dramatic live. It is really a pick 'em though. I’m still amazed at the matches that Misawa gave us. Trust me, he was in a lot of pain that weekend. I was expecting him to give his all in the singles match with KENTA, I just wasn’t sure how it would come together. The original plan was to have the GHC Heavyweight Title Match as the semi and the ROH World Title Match with Nigel vs. Aries as the main event. I thought Nigel and Aries had a great one in them and would end the show on the highest note possible. Now we all know about Nigel’s injury and it all works out as we’ll see Nigel vs. Aries on 12/29 back at the Manhattan Center. I really wanted to end 11/3 with a sure thing and ROH match on such a big show. The Briscoes, Jimmy Jacobs and Necro Butcher got the call. Looking back they had an impossible task ahead of them as Misawa had his best singles match in a while in an emotional bout. Nothing could follow it. The fans were drained. To their credit, Jacobs, Necro and The Briscoes weren’t about to give up without trying. They went out there and killed each other. I felt so bad for putting them in such a difficult spot. This match is crazy on DVD.

Needless to say this is a very difficult time for everyone in the FIP family. We are keeping our heads up. Getting back to work on FIP will be good for everyone. We are going to re-launch on February 16th and we will shake things up and go in some new directions. I'm actually feeling really good about the new ideas for FIP and I think they will be interesting to watch take shape. Right now we are going to concentrate on just one show a month in Crystal River, which is a great town for us. This way to follow FIP you only have to get one DVD a month. There will also be some upgrades in production. There is one thing I'm really not looking forward to on February 16th. It is going to be really tough to stop by the ticket table or look at the concession stand and not see Tammie there.

On another FIP note I’m glad that “Attack Of The Masked Fippers” & “Evening The Odds” are finally out on DVD. Since these shows took place a while ago they are both on the same DVD so you get two shows for the price of one. FIP will also be releasing other older shows like this. Anyway, “Evening The Odds” features the most awesome heel team in ROH/FIP history with Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries, Samoa Joe, Adam Pearce & Jimmy Rave managed by underrated managerial great Dave Prazak and Mr. Milo Beasely. “Attack Of The Masked Fippers” is actually one of my favorite shows to book ever. I just really enjoyed how the stories on the show came together and it was one of those nights where all the matches just clicked. It was a fun show. I also want to thank those of you who bought “International Impact Phase Two” for giving it a chance. It seems to be getting a really positive response especially the main event Briscoes vs. Necro Butcher & Mad Man Pondo Bar Room Brawl. This is really the most underrated feud of the year just for pure violence if nothing else.

The "Blood Edit" of the debut of The Age Of The Fall on the "Man Up" bonus disc is so grotesque that I couldn't watch it a second time after we edited it.

Production has finished on the “Undeniable” PPV, which will debut on January 18th. I will put the second hour that consists of Roderick Strong vs. Austin Aries, Briscoes vs. Davey Richards & Rocky Romero and Nigel McGuinness vs. Takeshi Morishima up against any hour of TV or PPV from any company, including us, this year when it comes to quality wrestling. I’ll have much more on this PPV in the upcoming weeks. I’m also very happy with the free preview hosted by Larry Sweeney that is being put together now. We should have it on ROHvideos.com after Christmas.

In closing, THANK YOU to all of you from the entire company for all of your support this holiday season. Every bit of your support counts and we can’t tell you how much we appreciate it. Personally, it really does give me a good feeling to think that people will be unwrapping their gifts all excited early on Christmas morning and smiling when they see that they got new ROH DVDs. Thank you very much.

Man, I totally forgot that Armageddon is tonight. Here's hoping the Orton vs. Jericho match is a good one, I want to see Jericho involved in main event stuff and another "meh" performance might keep that from happening.

Stolen from lordsofpain.net who stole it from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, PWInsider.com

-- Plans are in place for WWE to release DVDs on Batista, Bobby Lashley, Steve Austin, The Rock and "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig in 2008. They will also be releasing a Summerslam Anthology box set, which will feature every edition of the company's annual August pay-per-view from 1988 through 2007. They will also be releasing a compilation DVD on Hell in the Cell matches. Furthermore, it is believed that matches featuring Chris Benoit will be utilized in future Anthology sets, but they won't be marketing his name, nor using him in compilation DVDs on select WWE stars. It is believed that the Steve Austin DVD was delayed (it was originally scheduled to be released in November) because it was going to feature his mid-2001 feud with Benoit.

Yay for Mr. Perfect, Austin and Rock DVDs. Boo for Batista and Lashley sets.
