Then why hate on a controller if you're not even going to use it?

I'd rather play on a cab too. But it doesn't make me spurt out false claims about how I "think" things are gonna feel before I even use them.

Now I'm not bustin on you just cuz it is something I'm familiar with. I'm just saying, try it before you comment on it.

But yea, arcade cabs. *hugs my 3 arcade machines*.

I'm so getting a Vewlix VS.
No worries man. :) "I think" we're my keywords, so my comment shouldn't upset have anyone.

3 nice, trying to get an Egret 3 & an Atomiswave SD, but can't find any in the condition I want it to be in. At least I got my Impress for now.

This all reminds me...

Anyone here ever look into/buy one of those big red SNK cabinets with 4-6 slots for MVS games? Someday I need one but I have no idea how hard (or easy) they are to find.

Halo05, they aren't too hard to find, keep checking various places (Neo-Geo.com; Craig's List, ebay), they pop up pretty often.

---

xcopy, the prices on the Egret 3 are going to drop dramatically since the Vewlix L is at a very competitive price. I'd suggest waiting a little bit in order to take advantage of this fact.

Egret IIIs are beautiful though, we had BlazBlue running in one of these for AX. Which Impress do you have?

I may just join a group buy if one come up at shmups for ng.com forums.

Well, had a sudden urge to take parts from my previous mod and mod my Fighting Stick 3. Unforunately, the USB split of my Mayflash crapped out (only within a month or so). The PS2 split works fine, however, I don'thave any reliable USB stick. So I ended up transferring parts to my FS3.

The mod wasn't that hard, all I had to do was follow the guide on the 2nd post of the FS3 mod thread at SRK. I would recommend modding the FS3 if you want to save money and start somewhere fairly easy. Unfortunately, I don't have some crazy anime art on it, just the plain metal cover. Maybe later I'll put some hentai on it... Haha, I've never seen a hentai/porn stick yet, anyone got any pics to show off?

Here's a video I made to show FrankySox how bad my Hori EX 2 stick is. He was thinking about buying one and I've been trying to talk him into waiting until the new Street Fighter IV sticks are out. I originally had this video set as private, but I thought it would be better if other people could see how bad this stick is as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8qtJx7d3Cg

Let me know what you guys think. Also, if you click on the video you can choose to watch it in high quality on YouTube.

You want to know what I think? I think you have no idea how to use a Japanese stick.

It's not the same as a Happ stick.

Even using a Happ stick you weren't consistent in pulling the shoryu smoothly.

Just my observation.

If you can't use a JPN style stick at all, that's something you have to learn before having it respond to your style/gameplay.

The SFIV sticks are JPN style sticks as well. It's not going to let you do shoryuken inputs or qcf/qcb easily. You should stick to what you're used to.

Also, just tried the same test using my modded SFAC stick and my stock EX2. Just to prove to myself mentally that I wasn't full of shit...

I pulled off SRK 100% (10/10 attempts) on both sides with the SFAC and same result with the EX2.

I even did it 100% with the SFIV stick. :)

haha

Thanks for the comments.

I believe the main reason I wasn't pulling off the shoryuken smoothly was because that was the first time I used that stick in about a year or so.

I thought maybe I wasn't used to using a JPN stick because my hand hurt from playing on it and it is also the first balltop stick I've ever used. But the Hori stick feels loose as hell to me and I like the stiff springy feeling in my Happ stick.

If I buy one of the SFIV sticks, and then buy the sanwa bat top adapter from lizard lick, will that make it feel more like my Happ stick? If not, would I be able to take out the Sanwa joystick and throw in a Happ stick?

*edit*
I just tried again as well on my SFAC stick and got 7/10 from one side and 6/10 from the other. I know I used to be able to pull them off with no problem when I used to play with that stick. I need to practice up on it again.

Do you think I should try to learn how to play on a JPN stick or just stick with a HAPP set-up?

Hi again... It takes a lot of practice to become comfortable with Japanese sticks. I say try it out for awhile. Remember with Japanese sticks you don't have to exert as much force to engage the desired direction. Precision is key with Japanese sticks.

Throwing in a bat top adapter on a Sanwa stick (SF4 stick, for example), will only change the feel of the stick when holding it. It won't change the fact that it is still the same stick and requires the same amount of movement in order to perform certain motions.

Unfortunately Happ parts will not fit easily into any Japanese stick. Happ parts are HUGE. The closest thing to Happ I would recommend in JPN land is a Seimitsu LS32 is a bit tighter and reacts to neutral faster after being engaged in any direction. A Seimitsu stick has a tighter spring mechanism, shorter throw and smaller deadzone as well.

In the end. Learning Japanese sticks and comparing them to what you're used to (in your case, Happ), is entirely a preference thing. I would suggest practicing on it for awhile to see if you can force yourself to know the stick and where you're making a mistake. Start with smaller/compact motions first before going back to what you normally do when playing. Learn from there.

MarkMan,

HRAP Orange or HRAP SA2?

From pictures I've seen the HRAP SA2 button layout looks different (in a bad way) compared to the HRAP Orange.

This will be my third PSX/PS2 stick. Bypassing getting a custom stick until at least the new year.

It's a preference thing.

HRAP Orange is same button layout as T5 stick.

HRAP2 SA is the traditional Japanese arcade gaming layout.

Yeah, one of the best things you can do when learning japanese style sticks is to just go in the training mode for an hour or two and try to do simple stuff over and over again until you get it down 100%.

Its a very different feel, but once you have it down and can play on either american or japanese its alot of fun to mess around with movement comparisons.

Alright thanks for the advice. I'm just glad to see that those motions can actually be done 10/10 times with the Hori stick. I will hit the training mode with the Hori stick and see if I can get a better feel for it.

I have one more question and it may be dumb so bear with me.. Is there a proper way to hold onto the ball part of the joystick or is it mainly based on whatever works for the individual person? I've seen some people put their hand over the top of the ball and then I've seen others put their hand under the ball with the shaft in between their middle and ring fingers.

That is also up to you and whatever works best.

I see people use the wine glass technique (palm upwards with stick shaft between the pointer/middle finger) and some use the side technique (where you cup the side of the ball with the area between your pointer finger and thumb).

Whatever works for you!
Coming from the Arcade scene, I do. ;)

I'd rather play in person on an actual cab. :)
So coming from the "arcade scene" you can look at a picture of a product and know automatically if its crap? please

oh man, my lust for a proper stick is building!!!
the only thing holding me back now is the custom art.
I emailed mamemarquees.com with a question, but I'm still waiting to hear back from them. But maybe some of you are familiar with them??
I'm just wondering if you need to tell them exactly where to put all the button holes, or if they just ship the art out in a single solid piece (and then you put the holes in yourself).
any help would be much appreciated!

Any updates on the stick rankings, Markman? I'm going to placing my pre-orders on everything this thursday at Gamestop. The manager's gonna love me.

I gave the Hori another go tonight and I can now pull of the shoryukens. I can't do it every single time, but hopefully some more practice will fix that.

How does a Sanwa stick feel compared to the Hori joystick? Is it any easier to pull off moves with the Sanwa?

Quick question. I saw that the Hori Real Arcade Pro EX for Xbox 360 is up for pre order on Amazon. Granted how hard these things are to find, do you think that it's just a place holder date or is that a legit ship date?

It will ship a little earlier than the end of December (supposedly), Hori is rolling these out well before SF4 is released.

They won't be too hard to find for long.

Well, I attempted the dual pcb mod...

I failed.

Well, actually everything was fine, even tying the power sources and common ground, however with the ps pad connected, some buttons weren't functioning or two buttons were tied together. This is most likely due to my crappy H version PS pad. Solderless is nice and all, but the wires can easily touch when they are crammed near each other. At least my stick wasn't bricked and easily restored to single pcb setup.

Is there an alternative to the H version, and A version for that matter (can't find them anymore). Maybe an easily acquirable Madcatz pad I can hack that involves soldering.

Hey you guys I have a few newbie questions. Its been a long time since I was really into fighting games (Street Fighter 2 a lil in the arcades but a ton on the SNES and later the Alpha collection on ps2 with a pad) but after seeing video clips of SFIV and playing the demo of HD remix the nostalgia factor hit me and I'm a bit excited to dive back into the genre.

Which platform? I've got both a ps3 and 360 and it seems as far as fighting games and peripheral support they seem about equal (360 having DoA4 and both getting Tekken 6) with both having different downloadable titles (XBLA/PSN).

Which stick? Having not been in an arcade in 10+ years its going to be a learning experience but with the poor quality of the 360/ps3 d pads and the unknown quality of the Madcatz SF4 pads I'm thinking the SF4 Fight Stick might be the way to go with its 8 buttons it could be used for pretty much any fighting game I would think? But will the 360 version have a jack for the headset? Can I use these sticks in my lap? And will a novice notice a difference between the Fight Stick ($80) and the Tournament Edition ($150)? I want a solid stick that I can use for many fighting games but it will be eating into the gaming budget in Feb.

What's a gate? Is it what stops movement at the extremes? So if its got a square gate its going to feel like your moving the stick inside a box? That sounds like it would make performing the half and quarter circles a pain. What kind of "gate" does the SF4 Fight Stick and Fight Stick Tournament Edition have?

Hopefully you guy can push me in the right direction as I'm tempted to go preorder the Tournament stick later today at gamestop but I don't want to make a newbie/game pad scrub mistake :D

Platform, mostly up to you. Some factors might be the online play. Overall XBL is held in higher regard compared to PSN. Not quite sure if the netcode is the same in either version, I'm sure someone else can answer that. If you plan to go to EVO tournaments, they'll most likely be using the PS3 version of STHD. Though if you're going to tournaments, it's probably a good idea to own a stick for each system. Generally, PS3 just has a wider stick support, though it's still limited by the need for a decent PS2-to-PS3 converter. David Sirlin, who played a big part in making this game a reality seems to play the 360 version, though I'm not sure about his reasons for doing so. Also, I'm sure you'd enjoy having the same system version as your immediate friends, so it would make sense to have the same version that your cohorts have.

Which stick, there are many out there. You can definitely wait for the Madcatz stick. Personally, I have a Hori Fighting Stick 3 for PS3, which seems to be going for mid-$40 range shipped on Amazon. The stock parts are certainly playable, but if you want Sanwa parts which seem to be the most popular for fighting game sticks, you can pick those up at Lizard Lick, about $50 for a stick and set of 8 buttons. Now if you don't want to venture into the stick modding scene, that's perfectly fine. Check out Markman's site, SDTekken for reviews on various sticks. Though, I honestly think a modded FS3 is one of the best balances of price and quality, if one is willing to go through the modding process.

The gate pretty much restricts where and how far the stick tilts. The square gate seems to be the most used, both in sticks and cabinets. The main reason is the even distribution of effort to input all 8 directions. Octogonal gate seems perfect, however the effort to hit the diagonals vs the axis is different. Circle gates... I personally dont dig. I can find the axis for beans.

This site explains more on this. Also has many other informative sections, such as pcb diagrams.

A lot of sticks coming out are ball-tops with a square gate... but what style are YOU used to??

Even though ball/square seems to be the "standard" these days, I grew up using a bat in a round gate. Despite whatever the standard might be today, bat/round will always "feel" right for me. So when looking to buy a stick, I would consider nothing else! Follow your heart!

"Which stick?" is a real personal question.

First of all, most intermediate players (and even some expert players) won't notice the difference between good quality sticks and great quality sticks. I know a ton of good people that played on unmodded Tekken sticks that can destroy me. It's all about your comfort level with your stick. I prefer my HRAP to my EX2 only because I'm so used to the throw, the feel, and the weight of it. But I can play just as well on the EX2 with very minimal difference.

Poor quality sticks will make a difference though. Just pick up an NES Advantage and feel the difference.

6 vs. 8 buttons isn't anything to worry about. Even KOF players have switched to a conventional layout, not that weird whack NeoGeo one.

Scrub mistakes usually don't happen in the joystick selection process. =)

I was wondering, how much does the wood for a stick cost?

I've been in the mood to build something, so I was thinking about buying some wood and making a box for that arcade stick I wanna make. I can't afford to do the whole thing now, but I figured I could go ahead and make the box and then finish it over christmas break or something. I gotta do some googling to find an instructable on making one though. I like the design of the SFAC stick with the panel being larger than the box under it.

Wood to make a stick is pretty cheap I imagine.

Wood stick boxes however, run quite a bit more if you buy them premade

Yeah, I've seem some expensive pre mades.

Does anyone happen to have the dimensions of the SFAC stick? I think I'd use that as a template.

I might have some wood in the garage. I'll check that tomorrow.

unfortunately, it's bigger than jupiter, weighs like 600 pounds, and had to be cut into eight pieces for me to take home...

then later I discovered u could buy smaller pieces in a small obscure section in sum random aisle at the store!!

still, those small pieces would cost a lot if I had to buy a few (altho the store would prolly cut it for u in the size u need so it's still prolly better that way)

regardless, I got MDF for life now.

regarding your description of a box tho, I got an empty one I can take a pic of if u wanna give a small donation to me.

I was suppose to give it to my friend like 3 years ago, but that guy never responds to my phone calls and I end up seeing him like 1.5 times a year...

and he's supposed to be like one of my best friends too! lol

Yeah, that's pretty much the exact design I was thinking of.

What do you guys use to paint?

I'll be using primer and spray paint for mine.

btw Puma u got dibds on that box if u want it, sum1 already PMed me for it,

but that's only if I truly decide to sell it... lots of memories and good times with that thing!

JEKKI, you still have that 2 Stupid Dogs 'cade stick :)

Also do Seimitsu LB-39 Ball Tops and Sanwa OBSF-24 or Seimitsu PS-14-KN 30mm Pushbuttons fit in an HRAP1?

Thanks Jekki. I'm gonna see if I have some wood today but if not I'll shoot you a PM.

The good thing is is that I have a grandpa who is retired, bored, and loves building shit. If I can bring him the dimensions, where to drill the holes, and materials, it will happen. I think he has the shit to prime and paint too. I'm hoping he has some leftover from when he re did his tryke, that shit is bomb.

Standard button size is 23mm right?

the buttons arent as cleanly laid out as I wish, like it's not perfect.

and I dont like the stick since I'm used to it being a little stiffer, I would need to replace the spring with a hard one.

why they dont make hard springs standard in happ competition stick I do not understand...
