CAG NFL Season Discussion

We shouldn't have to defend ourselves as Ravens fans because of this. I hope people aren't implying we support beating women because of the NFL team we follow, but if they are, they're idiots anyway.
I agree 100%, though there are always people out there looking for something to bitch about. I had to deal with a lady at a bar about 2 or 3 weeks ago just jabbering at me about how I must be woman beater and I love to hit women and so on because of my Ravens hat I was wearing. That was an unpleasant evening to say the least.

After the initial video (which was bad) and the later indictment which clearly stated that Rice hit her rendering her unconscious, Ravens fans STILL applauded Rice at training camp AND a preseason game. That was/ is disgusting and paints Ravens fans in a bad light (in addition to Ray "murder" Lewis love).

Or course no Ravens fans (probably) support beating women but some Ravens fans supported those who do.

I could have sworn that Ray Rice was given a standing ovation out of support by Ravens fans at training camp?  No?

This whole 6 game policy for domestic abuse is a joke, because really domestic abuse as a whole has so many ways it can happen.  In Colorado if the police are called on a potential domestic abuse, no matter what someone has to go to jail.  In this case it is the extreme version where he doesn't deserve to play in the league ever again.  No matter if Goddell saw the video or not, she was still knocked out!  What do people think happened in the elevator?  I know what was said was he hit her with an open hand and she hit the railing, but still he attacked her.

You can't simply put a six game suspension to domestic violence as a result, Goddell screwed up there.  And now he is going to pay. As Goddell told the Saints over there bounty scandal... "Ignorance is not an excuse!"

You stay classy Ravens, especially after tweeting out "Janay Rice says she deeply regrets the role that she played the night of the incident." Ravens PR.  Way to make her out as the victim simply on the word of your player!

Well, Janay herself has told people to drop it.

And I don't think this says anything other than Ravens fans want Ray Rice winning football games for them.

Do you really think if this happened on another team those fans would boo them? Would Giants fans boo Victor Cruz? Packers fans boo John Kuhn? Colts fans boo Reggie Wayne? Do you think 49ers fans are going to boo Aldon Smith when he comes back?

Aldon Smith is a little different... the whole drug part of all of this is a lot different than beating a defenseless women, but if you want to compare them then go right ahead

I don't support people named "Ray" for this reason. I can't stand this guy.

I'm booing Hardy. He's in the process of appealing his July 15th guilty verdict for domestic abuse, but I still don't understand how he's not been suspended yet, if even by the Panthers.

because it's the NFL, the same reason Ray Rice was only suspended 2 games for knocking out a women and dragging her by her hair. Now that we actually see the hit it is magically worse! people under investigation for domestic abuse should be suspended indefinitely until the courts rule, and if they are found innocent they can recoup the money lost, but if found guilty, year long suspensions. only way I think they can do it.

This Ray Rice situation keeps getting more bizarre. An unnamed NFL owner told the Wall Street Journal that, essentially, Goodell decided to not purse a vigorous investigation, because he did not want to appear insensitive for not accepting Janay Rice's claim that she was partially to blame for the incident. Forgetting the fact that anyone with any knowledge of the world knows that abuse victims will often blame themselves and defend their abuser, this occurred in a conference room packed with NFL league executives, Ravens executives, AND her abuser. What...the...hell...

Sorry, but I don't agree with that. Athletes are already targets for gold digging women trying to get pregnant from one night stands. If you give a woman power to shut down a player's career just over an accusation, you can damn well bet there are women who will abuse it. I am 110% against domestic abuse, but we live in a country where you're innocent until PROVEN guilty for a reason.

In some ways, it's annoying that the NFL has to be involved in this at all. At the end of the day, they're just an employer like Wal-Mart or anybody else. How many wife beaters do you think work at Wal-Mart? Now, obviously, it's the NFL's and the Ravens' right to choose who they employ...but as far as any judgment or moral stance that they need to have on it, it really shouldn't be necessary (other than a blanket statement of "we don't condone domestic violence"). If Rice committed a criminal act, then let's press criminal charges and let things play out how they would for any other regular citizen.

There has to be a better way of handling these things when basically his wife won't press charges because if she does it means no new shoes and Gucci bags for her. In a way, that's almost like not being of sound mind to plead your case. I hate to turn this around on her...because what Rice did was awful and is unacceptable. But I seriously doubt other women who have dealt with domestic violence would feel very sorry for her.

Here's an article that details why harsher punishment wasn't sought after.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/why-isnt-ray-rice-facing-a-criminal-trial/

This quote in particular is very telling

Even if Palmer didn't want to cooperate with prosecutors in building a case against her husband, they still could have gone to trial if they felt they had enough evidence to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, McAvoy says.

To do that, McAvoy says it would be important for prosecutors to have not only the video evidence but also witnesses to testify and medical evidence.
So, yeah...that's what should have happened.

1. That is not how the NFL works. They aren't "just an employer" as you assert. Every aspect of player conduct (and I mean everything from salaries, days off, meal allowances) The agreements was negotiated by the players association and the league and give the league power to dole out punishment for infractions.

2. you're wrong. Many many women stay with their abusers and it has little to do with "gold-digging". I've seen quite a bit of support for her from other domestic violence survivors.

Not trying to compare, but the Aldon Smith story is more than just drugs.

He played in a 27-7 home loss to the Colts on Sept. 22, two days after his pickup truck apparently struck a tree and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession, authorities said. he was also arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Miami Beach in January 2012.

Smith was arrested April 13 at Los Angeles International Airport. Police said Smith was randomly selected for a secondary screening and became uncooperative with the process, telling a TSA agent that he had a bomb. No charges were filed.

In November, he pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a June 2012 party at his home. Investigators said several shots were fired, two partygoers were injured and Smith was stabbed. In the subsequent investigation, prosecutors say detectives found five unregistered, illegal weapons in Smith's house.
dragging her by her hair.
That never happened on either video.

1. I guess when you bring unions into it, it does complicate it a bit more. I've never lived in a place where unions are prominent, so I really don't have much experience with them. I still think it's unfair that people are calling for the NFL to be harsh in their punishment when the courts...the ones that are actually supposed to police these things were lenient.

At best, let the Ravens decide if they want to employ someone with this reputation...and then let other teams decide the same. Again, I'm not condoning it. I just think it's BS that it wasn't handled by the proper authorities.

2. You're kind of piecing together different parts of what I said there. But fine. I think that's all the more reason to not consider them of sound mind in deciding whether criminal charges should be filed. If there's solid evidence of a mentally handicapped person being abused, I'm pretty sure charges are filed regardless. I don't think it's an extreme stretch to put these women in that category (not that they're mentally handicapped...just that they aren't able to think about the situation clearly).

Aldon Smith voluntarily missed 4 games for rehab. What player has ever done that?

And there are TONS of Raven fans at the game tonight wearing Rice jerseys, all getting together for Instagram photos. How fucking lost can someone be?

Of course people are posting on Instagram wearing Rice jerseys. Going against popular opinion is cool on social media.

Big Ben gets hit in the chest and that gets a flag. Flacco's head gets tilted 90° by a helmet-to-helmet hit and no flag.

For Ben, the defender should have tilted his had and lead with his shoulder. Sucks but that's the rule. For Flacco, helmet to helmet rule is for players in "defenseless" positions.

Edit: which qb got injured by a helmet to the chest that lead to that rule?

Honestly, I wasn't 100% clear as to where you were going and was mainly responding to the idea that other domestic abuse sufferers wouldn't like her. You're right, though, the law is messed up in this regard and doesn't empower the legal system enough.

Even though what Rice did was terrible , I hope that he does get help to change things. He is still young. The strange thing is if the NFL had given him a year, I don't think it would've been as big a story.

rumors going around that Greg hardy's domestic abuse case is actually worse then Rice's, however no video evidence for people to go into an up roar, let's see how the league handles it.

Greg Hardy attacked me in his apartment. Hardy picked me up and threw me into the tile tub area in his bathroom. I have bruises from head to toe, including my head, neck, back, shoulders, arms, legs, elbow and feet. Hardy pulled me from the tub by my hair, screaming at me that he was going to kill me, break my arms and other threats that I completely believe. He drug me across the bathroom and out into the bedroom. Hardy choked me with both hands around my throat while I was lying on the floor. Hardy picked me up over his head and threw me onto a couch covered in assault rifles and/or shotguns. I landed on those weapons. Hardy bragged that all of those assault rifles were loaded. Landing on those weapons bruised my neck and back. Hardy screamed for his administrative assistant (Sammy Curtis) to come into the room and hold me down. Hardy and Curtis then took me into the living room area. I wasn’t nearly strong or fast enough to escape. I begged them to let me go and I wouldn’t tell anyone what he did. They took me out into the hall, pushed me down and went back inside his apartment. I crawled to the elevator and ran into CMPD.”

deleted the ESPN app mainly because I'm so tired of all the crap that goes along with outside the actual sports.  I don't care about any of these people's actual lives, as far as I care it could be prison games that they are televising on Sundays.

This season is a fucking nightmare.

This is the same man whose son was beaten to death last year.
He's got a brood right?

How long until Minnesota does a jersey trade in like New England and Baltimore?

Edit: I'm not against discipline, even if it involves some form of physical punishment but if you read what he actually did you have to admit he certainly crossed that line. I think the liberal media will run with this... seeming how Peterson has already been quoted making comments that were construed as "anti-gay".

I mean we have to feed the pig afterall... keep the machine rolling.

Probably because they'd be fired on the spot, get prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and go to jail.
Exactly. The reason any of this is even an issue is because we have these bullshit "half-laws" for celebrities/athletes. Personally, I don't really care if a corporation wants to hire a felon. Everybody has a right to work. But when that person can avoid normal punishment because of their status, that's when the system gets all screwed up.

Again, people are crying for the NFL to clean up what the courts are happy to let slide. I'm not entirely exonerating Goodell...but guess what. If Rice, Peterson, Smith, Gordon, etc. had actual legal consequences, people probably wouldn't be as upset about them being allowed to play a kid's game for a living.

What legal consequences are there for Josh Gordon being near somebody that smoked marijuana? People don't like the NFL's handling of his case because it's the tamest thing anybody could get suspended for a whole season because their limit is so much lower than most other jobs out there.

Drew Brees looks like the guy that is starting his sixth game ever while Brian Hoyer looks like the long-time veteran QB. I'm sure it won't continue like that, but it's nice to see the Saints look like Cleveland did to start last week.

Ugh...the Titans offense looks like complete ass today. These are the types of games where you lose your job, Jake Locker. I've never seen him play this bad. Making bad reads, missing open receivers. I don't really think the playcalling has been great either. Shonn Greene has had pretty good success running the ball...but when they can't complete a pass on 1st or 2nd down, it keeps creating situations where they have to throw again.

We'll see if Locker and company can get their heads out of their asses in the 2nd half, but right now, they're making the Cowboys look like a playoff team.

Its only halftime and its the Cowboys but how bout dem Cowboys? Defense is killing it and Murray is running wild. Room is still not 100 percent. Hoping he continues to feed Murray and Randle.

The refs gave Dallas a few breaks on that last drive. They got bailed out on a 3rd down by a pass interference call. But then Bryant pushes off in the end zone and it's fine. The late hit call on Pollard in the first half was also BS as Murray still had a foot in bounds.

The Titans haven't played a great game, but those things don't help.

EDIT - God damn, the Titans just can't catch a fucking break today. GG, Dallas. Dez Bryant, eat a dick.

Wow. What a great drive at the end to get down the field in position to get the go ahead FG for the Browns. The refs nearly screwed them over with that out of bounds call where they let seven seconds run off before stopping the clock after the catch.

lol...to be fair, Romo did a pretty solid job making throws when he needed to. He easily outplayed Locker today. And the Tennessee defense actually got a good amount of heat on him. He was sacked 4 times and had pressure in his face for much of the game. I'm at least happy that the Titans are getting after the QB on defense now. If the QB steps up and makes accurate throws, he's going to be tough to beat. Romo actually did that today (though, obviously it helped that they had the running game working as well).

I will say it Iron Sheik Style:

fuck the Ray Rice. I put him in camel clutch, break his back, make him humble old country way, then fuck him in ass"

Why the fuck did that woman marry him after that? Seriously?

It surprises me the Ravens let him go, didn't Ray Lewis kill someone? I guess it goes by prison rules, if you're a killer, it's ok, but an abuser, you're fucked.
Careful, that gets u a 2-week suspension if you're the 49ers announcer. :)

She probably enjoys the lifestyle that being with Rice has afforded her more than whatever alternative she thinks she has.
