CAG Star Trek Online Fleet/game discussion thread
Nobody joined me for voice chat during fleet time last night. I'm not coordinated enough to do justice to text chat and take on Gorns at the same time. If I'm not asleep I will try to be there Saturday.
I'm going to miss Sat, but yesterday was fun. So I'll be back on Tues for more action.

I'm interested in picking up STO, but I'm curious how the game is. My only forays into MMORPGs are WoW and FFIX. The reviews make me excited to play.

I think it's pretty fun, but I think it's more fun if you're a fan of Star Trek in general. I think it's half-price at Atari.com right now.

I think if you're a fan of Star Trek and specifically enjoy the space battles, vaporizing your enemies, and authentic sounds, it'll be fun for you.

I've wanted to try this game, but the red shirts have been dropping like flies since they went in.

It is sad, if this was in the hands of a capable dev team this game could have been huge, Cryptic better stick to this one and work hard on it cause their reputation has went to shit rather quickly.

What are you talking about? You can bet that almost everyone who posts here loves it. The game's doing quite well. Cryptic patches it at least once a week, and they're releasing the first major content update by the end of the month. This is a good game that just keeps getting better.

Well after Champion online (yea i put down the 200 for the life time since i loved COX), and the lackluster updates. i still have my douts over STO :(

I haven't read this thread, but other forums I visit, I have read their threads on STO from beta up till recently and general census is the game is just lacking, the initial joy of getting new ships and stuff seems to not last long as it doesn't take long to get the higher end goodies.

Then from an out of the game view, we have Cryptic who has fell all over itself like a drunk with Champions Online and so far STO has been following the same pattern from beta to a bit after release that CO has followed and Cryptic has said already they are working on a new MMO.

So from that alone, Cryptic has 2 relativity new MMO's out, with another in the cooker. They don't exactly have a large studio, but hell I guess since they don't even really support Champions Online we don't need to count that one, but even so, that is a heavily load for a studio to carry, MMO's are no run of the mill workloads.

To top it all off, not even what, 3 weeks after STO comes out it already has had a $10 price cut and a week after that had a big promo sale giving away an extra 2 months on top of the free month. That alone shows sales haven't been too good and they (Atari) are trying to get more blood into a new game already when they can still make back a large portion of development costs just by the sale of the game at its high price before falling down into the $20 and under where all MMO's go after a half year or whatever.

These aren't good signs when you see the developer following the same trend they did to their previous game and already have another MMO in the works. Then the publisher is already cutting the price and doing promos to pump new sales into a brand new game.

That's why I said what I did. On the positive side, nearly everyone seems to enjoy the game for the first few weeks but then various reasons a lot of people are dropping like flies.

When they put a free trial up I'll be more then happy to give it ago, but as is, too many bad signs to ignore, I hope I am wrong though and the game gets the treatment it deserves for such a great IP.

It's a fun game, but it is lacking a bit in content. I personally think it needed another year before being shipped out. Then not only would Cryptic be able to say "Yeah, Champions was a fluke, but we did it right with STO" but they'd have a lot more business and trust from customers than they will ultimately get. I didn't know they were working on another MMO, that surprises me. I think because the Star Trek IP is significant, they will not go easy on the content updates and I suspect throughout the year they will have substantial updates. So by end of the year, give it a swing, it'll be a completely different game.

If you personally don't like game that's fine, but there's no point in posting "I haven't read this thread, but I hear the game sucks" or "I know the game isn't doing well, people drop like flies blah blah blah" since it doesn't add anything to the primary discussion about the CAG Fleet nor does it add any constructive information for people who want to try the game or people who play and want to learn more about the game.

I don't have tons of time to play, so I definitely am not in danger of blowing through the content. I find the game fun, particularly with a good group of other people, and as with all MMOs, they are adding new content regularly. I look forward to many years of playing this game.

Actually there is a point in posting my thoughts as it is a discussion as I am a bit interested in the game.

It does add constructive information for people who are curious about the game, the information pertains to the companies pass/current practices and how they are by their own history starting to follow the pattern again. As a potential customer I know I would love to know this information for a game that you pay monthly for for various things, one of which is continuous content updates.

Like I said, I am interested in the game, but need to take a more of a wait and see approach for a bit of time and anyone that follows MMO's would see some warning signs have popped up with this title so it is only natural to be a bit skittish about it.

The biggest plus for STO is the fact it is the Star Trek IP which should make it garner more support then normal, but we will see.

Kaotik, your problem with Star Trek Online seems to be the same problem that all the STO trolls have had since Cryptic took the game over: Cryptic made Champions Online. I'm not calling you a troll, but there has been an active trolling campaign against this game for months, and that can paint a false image of what it's actually like.

I too am angry at Cryptic for this. How dare they make that other game and then have the nerve to make Star Trek Online?

But Star Trek Online is not Champions Online. Thus your criticisms of Champions do not apply to it. STO is its own entity, despite some similarities. Cryptic truly is actively supporting this game. It's not perfect, nor is any other MMO at this point in its lifespan. But it's enjoyable and as I've said before, they are constantly improving it. There is no proof that they will stop working on it any time soon - that is just paranoia.

In fleet news, Saturday's Fleet Event was a big success! We've posted pics and info at http://www.cagfleet.com. The site's pages and forums have also seen many changes and improvements, so please check 'em out, everybody.

Cryptic is doing a pretty good job of impressing me so far. They've been very good at supporting the game with multiple patches per week and have already fixed some of the stuff that was annoying me since launch. Also I think a larger scale update is due in the next couple of weeks, hopefully featuring the respec option and other requested features.

With that said, it's not like you're missing out on anything by not signing up right now. Nothing wrong with playing it safe.

I agree that Cryptic is doing a much better job with handling STO versus Champions. Champions is still a pretty fun game, but the devs tried to do too much too soon with that game and alienated a lot of player base. That's not the case here with STO. There's some notably missing content, particularly with some of the planet/ground missions, but the space battles easily make up for it, IMO. The space game's core is really solid and I'm impressed at how well it combines fast action gameplay with a strong strategic component with the different powers and tatics you can employ (or not, if you just want to go in guns blazing you don't really have to worry about any death penalties).

I really like how I can choose to do a couple of explores or patrols for quick sessions. I also like how the "episodes" play out, if I'm able to do longer missions. Basically I can play the game how I want to for as long or little as I want, and still feel like I'm progressing or at least enjoying myself. While obtaining new ranks and ships is fun, that's really only a portion of the overall game. There's a bunch of different kinds of modes like the explores, patrols, episodes, and fleet actions, as well as PvP. Multiplayer works pretty well IMO, and they still have a lot more they can add and improve on. The game will only get better and it's already pretty good. I'm not even that big of a Star Trek fan.

While there are a few deals on getting the game client maybe you should wait till there more content out in the game. Most of the issues folks have brought up about the game have been also addressed as issues from Cryptic. So I figure anything "lacking" will be resolved in time. They have a nice update schedule here : http://www.startrekonline.com/calendar on more stuff they plan on adding to the game. Especially if you are the type of person who can burn through a MMO like some folks already have with STO.

I think the game is much more enjoyable if you like Trek and that is part of the reason I like it so much.

Ahh...my Defiant Class ship :) I love this little bugger

screenshot_2010-03-08-22-41-18.jpg

Kinda sucks that NOW they are dropping the price of the game :( I was shocked when EB dropped the CE by 20 bucks 2 weeks after I bought it but they let me PM it :)

That's an incredible shot, ITDEFX. I need to start taking note whenever I run into a cool system to take screens in.

On the flipside...

OH GOD NO.

One to transport directly to sickbay!

Yikes that really creeps me out Metaly! :O

Ok for those who saw my chat yesterday on the fleet chat, here are the pics I was talking about when I was on the tribble planet

Strange bug? or did I get shot in the ass and it got stuck? This was more embarrassing than the Gornaria incident during beta :O

Nice to play with some of you guys last night, can't believe how awesome some of your ships are. I'm thinking about going to the escort class next time I can nab a ship, any comments, currently have a cruiser with my engineering dude.

If you have enough credits, you can just buy an escort now!

Hm, that didn't come out quite right, did it?

I think I'll just stick w/cruisers for the entirety of my character's leveling experience. Once I get enough credits I may pick up a science vessel. My alt is science though.

Science vessels are my hands-down favorite but I'm really looking forward to creating an engineer and flying a cruiser again... then maybe an escort in the distant future.

By the way if you guys haven't done the autofiring glitch, it's really fantastic. Just right-click your space weapons really quickly and you can have two weapons each in fore/aft on autofire. I have a dual bank/beam array in front and two aft turrets and it's such a relief not having to hammer on the space bar anymore. I hope they never fix this.

Wow, nice, I'll have to do this when I get home. My issue is I like to go in Rambo style, which I can do in the cruiser since I can take a ton of damage, but I can't really take anyone out really quickly, which is why I was thinking of going to the escort class. Plus, it takes forever for the cruiser to turn.

Yea too bad it took forever to get the shot lol :p

Anyways yea once you get a Defiant Class ship, you won't believe how quick and how much fire power that little ship has. I am NOT looking forward to the Promethius (sp?) class ship. That ship should not have made the cut as they knew that Multi Vector Assault mode would be extremely difficult to implement. I am sure one day they will hammer out the issue (like why not let the AI drive the rest of the ships?).

You know, I thought I saw in a screenshot once a Galaxy class with the Saucer and Battle bridge fighting separately. I don't see why they couldn't do the same with the Prometheus. I agree on the AI being able to control the other piece.

Some great Fleet Events this week.

I got a bunch of screens of us fighting the CE... or of me fighting the CE, at least. Keeping a visual on anyone wasn't my top priority once the battle started.

That's it right before we blew it up. ;)

I have given up on the CE because apparently 1. no one reads the forums about how to fight it, 2. Everyone keeps shooting at anything that comes at them and 3. Because no one reads the forums, you could be firing at that thing for 2 hours and it still won't die and everyone blows up and gives up.

Any of the lifetimers get the email from Cryptic? I like the little perks they have in store for us. Key being front of the queue and new costume pieces. Chat channel and VIP lounge doesn't mean crap to me :) Hopefully they'll throw us some more stuff down the line for saving them from going under :p

Got that email as well. Haven't checked the forums to see if there is massive nerd rage about "They didn't tell us about that before! No fair, certain users shouldn't get preferential treatment!" NERDRAGE!!!!

LOL, if they want to rage, let them buy the slightly more expensive version of lifetime :) I'm looking forward to the new raidisode (hopefully this week). I'm guessing Update #1 will be next week where they'll be adding a store to use our marks of valor. Can't wait to see what goodies will be available. I already have 53 marks, hoping to get another 50 or so if Cure comes out this week. Two raidisodes a day! Woo! Have a solid 100 or so marks by the time the store appears. Get mah phat lewtz.

I'm on like page 7 of the thread on the ST:O forums and it started out with lifers saying the queue thing was unnecessary. We haven't hit queues before, so it's not an issue. What most of them, so far, don't seem to understand is that the perk appears to have been in place since the second or third day of the head start because after that I never saw a single queue when people were raging all over the boards about queues.

what are you guys talking about NERDRAGE? We are all nerds if we are playing this game...heck there are more nerds in star trek then there is in star wars... star wars is full of geeks, then nerds. :p

yea thats not cool if they pull this special treatment for those who bought lifetime subs. I was going to buy one myself, but at the time I just couldn't afford it. :|

The first megapatch goes live tomorrow. Thank god I made it to Admiral the other day. So far so good as I am holding my own against the cardies. Stuck on a bugged mission (that one where you have to rescue the hostages from the parraeth followers in the fire cave. They need to add a light button to illuminate things in the area, some of these caves are really, really dark and almost impossible to see around you. :(

Is the big patch definitely out tomorrow? (Also would that mean Thursday at 3AM like they've been doing?) I'm looking forward to seeing the new stuff, but I'm going to be gone all weekend, boo.

Also has anyone ever gotten a weird-looking dialogue box saying something to the effect of "there's nothing on our sensors, captain"? I kept getting that last night during a deep space encounter. Things were generally feeling buggy/laggy yesterday.

Yea... big patch goes live tomorrow (should be on the events calendar)..i don't think you need to be on tomorrow or the next few days just to see what comes up on it. I am very sure there is going to be a lot of stealth nerfs here and there :(

Honestly I am looking forward to some friendly PvP (fed vs fed) action, and that extra off duty slot as my CAG uniform is taking that up :(

I'm a little concerned by all the nickel and diming they're starting to do. Respecs in the C-store? So those that can afford to pay, will be the OP FOTM and the rest of us are stuck with our skills? (Not to mention they're difficult to understand what some of the skills actually do in the first place.)

I can understand "extras" in the C-store (uniforms, pets, whatever), but game-changing items like respecs and playable races (if those races happen to have abilities not available to regular players) are unacceptable to me, especially as I pay the $15 a month like everybody else.

The content should not be going live today, maybe next week. It's live on Tribble. My understanding from their post was that pre-patching starts today, but not a real patch. They have bugs to squish still. Also, you can buy a lifetime sub now I believe for $300, just not the $240 prior to launch. I don't see why anyone should rage over perks with lifetime. Lifers take a big risk, so we should get compensated with perks. You have an option to cancel at anytime, we gave up that option, and that option has significant value in my view given the state of the game. So in short, stop whining :)

I completely agree that respecs should NOT be in the C-store. That is complete and utter BS. The "suits" at Cryptic are complete fucktards. I've never seen a worse business model for retaining customers than theirs. It's absolute shit and if I ever ran a normal business that way, I would expect to go under after 2-3 years. For whatever reason, they think that nickel and diming their customers is the way to go and that business would be great that way. Someone forgot to mention to them that you are already charging $15/month for your game, you can't then go ahead and also charge for critical things like respec. Especially when the skill tree is broken and needs significant revision and skill descriptions are, perhaps appropriately, cryptic. I don't understand how a company can look at the success Blizzard has with it's business model and then ignore it and go their own route, thinking it's going to work great. It worked REALLY well with Champions Online right? Wrong.

Yes, NerdRage is a real thing. It's why so many people troll STO at the Cryptic forums. They can't get over disliking that other game Cryptic made, so they act all crazy and vindictive.

I always thought nerds are people who are unaware that their unique interests and traits differentiate them from regular people. Geeks are aware of the differences and can function better with others as a result.

I mentioned this in the chat during the fleet event. Cool way to score some new gear and I'm sure folks are starved for content they'll jump at the opportunity.

Just to let you guys know that I just had nose surgery and so I will be bleeding off and on over the next day or so and have to keep my head tilted back. So I will be missing the fun this weekend, sorry guys and gals!

Hope you're feeling well, Itdefx! Don't forget to login for an hour on the Tribble test server if you feel up to it. I logged in and moved around slightly now and then to prevent it from idling out, but I didn't really play on it.

BTW everyone, we have a new officer, MindStorm, who'll be helping implement some new features for the fleet site. He plays during the day (not evenings), so say hi if you're ever on that early.

Thanks, I tried being on last night for an hour or so trying to complete a bugged mission with the help of Kyra and Seph but the mission is so badly bugged none of us could complete it. It was the mission where you have to rescue the prisoners from the firecave on Bajor.

I couldn't stay on for long because my nose started bleeding faster so I needed to lay down. We will see how things go tonight...but for now I am off to rest more :(
