Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
If you have been raping the money glitch, I can sell you mine. I am not sure how much it costs, but I am not sure what baddie drops the long sword. I also don't know how much it costs.
Long sword is one of the first you get. I'm sure it's no more than 4000. I did take advantage of the generous glitch, and would be very appreciative if you were to put yours up for sale. My friend code is 253488864314

Finally beat it after 15 hours. Still have 1/3 of Nest of Evil to do, though.
I did NOT unlock the powers of the Vampire Killer. Not sure if this means I got a better or worse ending, but I copied the save file beforehand so I could try beating it the other way.
am i the only one that sucks at the final boss?
what weapons do you guys use for the true final boss?
You're not the only one. I used so much food and potions, it's not even funny. I suggest just using food and potions.

I used the Vampire Killer ++, mastered axe, and I used the meteor skill

i just keep spamming the skill you get from nest of evil. When the hands close in on you just call your partner and attack the other side.

I didn't have any trouble whatsoever... what about the fight is difficult for you?

i dont do enough damage with the weapons i have...by the time i get to the "True" boss...im all out of potions and spagetti.

I assume you maxed out the number of potions you were carrying? High potions from the store will save your life so many times it's ridiculous.
Whenever I shut the DS whilst playing this game it takes about 3 seconds for the sleep mode to kick in. Has anyone else had this problem? It doesn't do that with any of my other games, so is my copy of Castlevania defective?
That's because if you listen carefully the game makes a sound like a coffin closing when you put it into sleep mode. That's why it stays on. To make that sound.
That's because if you listen carefully the game makes a sound like a coffin closing when you put it into sleep mode. That's why it stays on. Mario Saying, "Goodbye!" the coffin closing in PoR, etc. It just kinda add to the charm that somehow the DS has a video game machine possesses.
Will someone who has never ever played a Castlevania game like this game?
do you like games similar to super metroid?

These Castlevania games are like crack. I was supposed to be going to sleep early last night because of an exam today, but every time I'd get past one more cool monster, or find one more save room, or get one more new weapon or better armor, I'd just keep going. Bad game, bad!

Anyone wanna collect all the friend ids posted and update it in the OP? I want to try co-op with other people but can never seem to find a game at night.

Its pretty much like every other castlevania, which is a good thing but with a new twist with the two characters(*kinda reminds me of how it felt playing resident evil zero for the first time*)

I played through boss attack 1 and beat it in 3 minutes my first time, was pretty happy. The boss fights in castlevania are always so thrilling, i just wish i didnt spend like 20 seconds waiting for health after i beat the last boss lol.

I beat the game by getting the full-on Vampire Killer this time, using the older copied save. Again, though, I was just Jonathan when the final boss was killed. It was actually tougher this time (Holy Claymore owns), but the ending was identical.

For those struggling at the end, keep Charlotte out of things -- you need the MP a lot more, and it goes down when she gets hit. Have your best weapon and the Meteor double-team spell equipped, and have-at. In the part reminiscent of the trash scene in Star Wars, make sure to use Meteor, and slash like your life depended on it (it does). Using the quest item glitch, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to afford maxed HP/MP-restoring items.

Maybe I'll do it again on the save where I hadn't unlocked Vampire Killer yet, and see what happens. I really don't want to beat the boss with Charlotte. I don't use her much these days -- only her acidic bubbles spell with R-button to help.
never played super metroid
Then, in my opinion, you're missing two of the best games of all time: Castlevania: SotN and Super Metroid. Both are about nonlinear exploration, finding new weapons and equipment to open new areas, and battling huge bosses. If that sounds appealing, then I say yes.

I'd like to add a tip for the last boss too.

The following spell is obtained near the end.
Right before you go on to the last boss there is a very small room right before the boss door. There’s is a breakable ceiling in there where you will obtain the 'Speed up' spell. Doesn't seem like much but trust me I owned D&D as their attacks became so easy to dodge. It even creates a barrier around you which repels Dracula's Fireballs and maybe even Death's sickles, but they're easy to dodge anyway. So the only things that are semi-hard to doge are Dracula's burning discs and their combo attack. I suggest using Meteor as they use their combo attack. FYI I used the Vampire Killer.

Yeah, SOTN is easily the best Castlevania game and Super Metroid is legendary as well. Definitely two of my favorite games of all time.

I wish Nintendo would make a fricken 2D Metroid game for DS. Prime is cool and all, but the 2D Metroids kick Prime's ass.

What IGA needs to do is make a game detailing what happened in 1999 with Julius. The last 3 games have teased us with hints about this supposedly epic battle.

I just came upon a fairly ridiculous way to master weapons really fast.
Go to the section of the Forgotten City where the Dodo appears. Arm Charlotte with Time Stop and Jonathan with whatever weapon you want to master. Stop time with the Dodo on screen, switch to Jonathan, and quickly kill the Dodo with the subweapon. 30 SP per kill, and you can just keep walking back and forth.

I had 2 Master Rings on while I did this (Blessed Ring glitch) and I mastered the Paper Airplane in one kill.

Even better kill the Doppelganger. He gives 99 SP and is very easy to kill.

When Super Metroid hits the Virutal console I will check it out. As far as Symphony of the Night goes I don't have a playstation to play it on. :(

Where is this legendary beast?

Is anyone else not really getting into PoR?

Don't get me wrong, it's fun, and a great game, but I've never been a huge Castlevania fan (sucked at the NES ones back in the day, still do ;) ). But Aria of Sorrow took me completely by surprise, and I loved Dawn even more.

Somehow, PoR is missing something for me, and I don't think it's something as obvious or big as the soul system. Something doesn't seem to mesh for me. I'll definitely beat it
the levels post the sisters fight really up the anty!
, but I'm not sure that PoR will stay in my permanent collection.

I honestly can't put the game down. So, you're dumb. No really, I am enjoying the hell out of it. I am really glad I got it and am never letting it go.

I'm loving the game, but I do think I liked Dawn/Aria of Sorrow more. But it's only by a small amount. In fact it's such a small amount that they might as well just be equal.

Yeah im liking it more than DoS atm too. Sadly the one thing that dampers my play is that i was going through Circle of the moon and cant find my cart, dont like starting a new game without beating the last one.

circle of the moon is made by a different team, and IGA recently removed it from the timeline.

When I began PoR, I instantly thought "holy damn this already feels way more awesome than DoS and the GBA titles." Especially because the two-player mechanic works so well, and is pretty fleshed out as far as it is concerned for a first-time-outing.

However, as I've played it more, it feels much more hollow than some of the previous Castlevanias. This might be because the main hub feels even less like a cohesive unit than before, which has been a staple of the portable iterations. Symphony was the last game that made me sit down and think that the entire structure was a plausible, palatable whole, but these more recent games take that sort of thing for granted. I don't think Portrait reaches Harmony of Dissonance's transgression on this (which was UNBELIEVABLE in my opinion), but it still sort of cops out less than halfway through the game.

To replace this with a myriad of outer levels - the portraits in this case - tells me that the developers are really struggling to try and create large, dynamic environments and encase them within the Castlevania mythos. I think it's very prevalent since we really only got 4 levels outside of the castle (I'm not counting the Nest of Evil), since the later 4 are really just remixes of the first 4. It doesn't help that none of them seem to connect to each other - Egypt, a demented circus, an academy, and a town? What is the connection other than "gosh I guess Brauner really likes these kind of places" ??

Given that I really didn't like some of the direction with these outer areas only exaggerates the fact that the main castle feels so small and diminished. In Symphony, it seemed huge. Now I can warp to any of ...what, 6 (7?) locations and be anywhere almost instantly, instead of it taking more time to traverse around. This is probably in the name of convenience (and thus a good thing), but it still makes the main castle seem small.

Beyond that, I've found that grinding for items is almost ALWAYS disappointing, which I don't like. I also don't like the fact that there's really only two methods of attack as far as Jonathan is concerned - either slow and powerful with range, or short and quick and weak. I really, really want a weapon like Symphony had (its name escapes me) where you could attack as you ran. Because even though that weapon existed, there were still tons of other weapons I could use effectively - the soul stealer sword that got life back for instance.

I guess what I'm saying is that these newer games are definitely good, but they seemingly continually feel less and less ...emphasized. I think this has a lot to do with Iga's bullshit attitude regarding them, what with his "well we did anime 'cuz more kids play Gameboy and we want a larger userbase anyway." That's nonsense and he should be slapped for thinking that.

But I think that is the problem - I think at the end of the day, everyone is more worried about putting a game out on a console rather than the DS/GBA despite their massive userbases because a console game can earn you more credit if it is done right. Plus, portable = "pick up and play," and that mentality is definitely showing itself here.

Anyway, considering I've more or less gotten near 100% of this game in less than a week, which is something I've never done before, makes me question the game's overall standing. For the reasons above, it seems to get weaker as time passes. Had it included more emphasis on the tag team aspect and given me more options for equipping my characters, it might have been a little better.

Still an excellent game, and I'd tell anyone to pick it up, but it just doesn't reach the level of magic Symphony had.

P.S. Can we please make these games more gothic again? That was the whole point to begin with. Someone ought to make a Vampire Hunter D 2D game in the same style just to remind Konami wtf needs to happen with the series.

Are you talking about Crissaegrim?
Are you talking about Crissaegrim?
Yea. Wasn't there a second one?

There were two of them, one was better than the other.

They were awesome.

The other one you're thinking about is Vorpel sword I think, that one had one blade and the Criss had THOUSANDS! I think that's where this game is lacking for me, weapon variety. In SotN if a weapon had a special move or ability it was really unique and not some dash attack or death from above.

edit: But don't get me wrong, it's a great game. I mean c'mon I'm playing right now!

I could be wrong, but doesn't PoR have more specials in the other equipment -- boots, rings, etc.? I have no problem with PoR's weapons. So long as I don't just pick the strongest weapon and actually weigh my personal opinions about them, I think Konami did its job.

All this talk of SotN has me wondering what the Xbox Live Arcade version will be like. I own the PSone version and beat it several times, but I'll but it on 360 just for HD and achievements. I'm not normally like that, but SotN isn't a normal game.

You might have hit on what's bugging me about this. While I understand your gripes about "That couldn't exist!" in terms of Aria's, Dawn's, etc. castle, it was neat to see them piece it together so that everything did fit. These level designs sorta seem like "slap a hallway here, here, and here, a few towers, a smattering of big rooms... DONE!" (Although, I did smile when I saw that the desert level was in the shape of a pyramid.)

I applaud them for trying level variety, but I don't think the portraits were the right way to go about it. It sorta feels like an essay that someone copy-and-pasted from Wikipedia rather than researching and writing as a cohesive whole. Mario can suddenly be in a forest; Sonic can dash into a desert; but the variety doesn't really fit with the Castlevania vibe.

And maybe that's it, much like Strell said, they've lost some of the feel that the earlier games had. I think Aria and Dawn, while missing the mark a lot (especially Dawn), still retained a semi-sense of that gothic, Bram Stoker quality. The Anime-esque art of Dawn was annoying, but PoR really does make me feel like I'm playing in a Saturday Morning cartoon (does those even exist anymore?)

Please keep in mind that my griping is really, really nitpicking. The game is great, and a highlight to the DS library. I think I'm just starting to come to grips with what isn't sitting right with me.

IGA put it back in the timeline.

The only one removed from the series is Castlevania: Legends.

I think we all need to realise that no game may ever match up to SotN. However, I think if they made a next gen Castlevania for all 3 consoles similar to SotN and the GBA/DS ones, they could come close. I just feel that they could do so much more on the consoles with these games, but for the love of God, keep them 2d and bring back the gothic theme.
