Cloverfield Movie Thread - DVD Out on April 22nd
uh... TOYS?!?!?
no. it's not a giant toy attacking NY, that was supposed to be a toy of the monster. since you know they release toys of movies. but according to Aint It Cool, that's not it after all.

guess we'll see the 18th.
He wrote Armageddon ? Hmm... oh boy.
I liked Armagedon. Does everyone else see this as a bad thing?

No I didn't say it's a giant toy attacking the city..but when I saw the link to the picture I was thinking "Oh god they are making toys for this movie?"
I liked Armagedon. Does everyone else see this as a bad thing?
I liked it to, it was pretty amusing until they got to the asteroid, then it started getting boring. The special effects were great for it's time though :)

I agree, it hurt my feelings they were making toys for the movie too. Glad it was bogus. And double glad that the toy isn't what the monster looks like.

To summarize

cloverfield-monster-picture.jpg

This image has been discarded as fan art, however, it is worth noting that in recent days it has been revealed that several much smaller/faster creatures will be chasing the characters in the film. This image is consistent with that theory, depicting the parasitic creatures mentioned in the most recent interviews.

image.jpg

This image is confirmed to have been created by Peter Konig ("Tippett's art director for the upcoming, top secret JJ Abrahms production 'Cloverfield'"), but whether or not it was created FOR Cloverfield is uncertain. However, the image depicted above IS consistent with the slowed down footage we DO have of the creature.

Trailer Footage:
Slowed-down footage of creatures lower half passing between buildings

I'm more inclined to believe the creature is closer to the second based on the trailer footage. Additionally it has to be agile enough to whack the statue of liberty's head across the city... the first creature doesn't look so agile.

This is the type of movie that will be completely amazing and become a franchise and a pop culture reference for future generations. This will be "Americas Godzilla".

OR

It's gonna completely suck and if there are sequals, they will be as laughable as the AVP franchise.

im hoping its the first one...and that picture does look pretty sweet if its the monster

Seriously, how many people think we will NOT see the monster either at all or til it's dead from all the military ass pounding it got throughout the movie while the main characters run around the city screaming like little pussies?

i do

but theres always hope

I want to see tanks, I want to see helicopters, I want to see Raptors, I want the latests in state of the art military weapons unleashed against it.

yes, you do see plenty of the monster, but no shot is more than 10seconds long at a time i'd say. It is not the one in the picture a few posts before this.

I probably wouldn't call it "America's Godzilla", Godzilla was more of an in-your-face-beat-everything-to-shit-badass. And this guy you really don't get to know much about, the whole movie is spent through the view of the handheld camera, so you aren't watching the monster wreak havoc the whole time.

Creature Look->
I'd say his "crabs" kinda look like aliens from the "Alien" movies, only white.

AH HA!!!!
I knew it, I so fucking knew it.... we would NOT see the monster.... fuck YOU JJ !!!!!!

So let me guess, no music score either huh? oh...was the star trek trailer attached to this one?

Slusho answers and camera on monster->
Slusho isn't mentioned at all, that's just viral marketing stuff. And to the above user, you do see it, just not as much as you'd want. There's plenty of clear full-on footage, I just expected more. And yes, there is no music score because it's all filmed on the handheld camera so I guess they wanted to keep it realistic. There were no trailers because it was an advanced screening at our school, not in a theater.

So.......basically
it's like the damn camera operator zooms in, spins around really fast and you see something but then the camera shakes and can't make heads or tails right?

The majority of the time yea, but there's a few shots where they get an overhead view of the whole body and stuff, as well as below the body looking up.

sidenote- should I be marking these posts with more spoiler alrets and stuff? I don't want to give away too much in case people don't want it ruined. PM me if you want really detailed info.

well if you want...

So how much of this is rob's party, and do you see who rob is?

What's the running time?

Is it a Whale that has been mutated by toxic waste?

Who or what kills it?
well if you want...

Answers->
- Rob's party is the beginning oh 15min or so, I wasn't keeping track. Rob is one of the main characters in the group with the camera you see through.

- Runtime was probably just over an hour and a half. It seemed short.

- Definately not a whale of any kind

- Can't answer your last question

so what was dissapointing? besides not seeing the monster for that long?

As far as it being a disappointment- I just wanted more action, death, and blood. It was more about the characters and their journey through the city to get out. Plus,
and of course AICN reports in

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35236

I hate that site because their reporters can't get to the point and just blab, blab, cuss and so on like they were woofing down pizza while typing the reviews. Here comes Paramount's Overly hyped movie train wreck :(
I read the majority of that link (it goes on too long for me too) but the guy describes it well, I guess his expectations were met and mine weren't.

Disappointments (now that I remembered the spoiler button) ->
You really never learn anything about the monster. It's all from the character's perspective, so I guess it's realistic to include, I just didn't like it. Also the ending. It comes abruptly. I'd put it on par with War of the Worlds

Alright, I'm done for the night, off to play COD4. I'll try and answer some more tomorrow if anyone wants more info. Also, could ITDEFX edit your post above where I edited mine to include the spoiler button about the mini-creatures

sounds amazing! i cant wait to see it!
seems like people were dissapointed in not seeing the monster that much and no score. But the whole movie is about the lives of normal people, not the important people we see in every other monster movie.

Lets see what the audience thinks about this movie after comes out.

I've been off and on following this thread. I'm really excited to see the movie, I'm not too concerned with how "good" or "bad" it comes out, if I'm entertained, that's enough for me. But one of the links you guys posted led to a spoiler of the description of the monster and I gotta say, it's so hard to not read it. I have no expectation as to what the monster should look like, and I want to go into the movie with a clean slate. But yeah, just dropping into the thread to thank you guys for good discussion topics about such a mysterious movie. I can't wait to post my reactions later on.

Like I said before, this movie should have been that teaser trailer shown infront if Transformers and that's it. No real web site, no Virtual Marketing or anything else you don't see in the movie, no advanced screening. Very little promotion of the movie until a week or two before the release.

But hollywood can't do that, they need to keep the hype machine running for months because they think "we" forget too easily and won't remember going to see this movie.

I can't say that I've fallen victim to the "hype machine". It's like, from the very get go, the trailer caught my interest. And with such a ridiculously vague trailer, I was going to no doubt poke around a bit online to see what the deal is with the movie. Had it not have been for this thread, I wouldn't have known it was a monster movie. Honestly, I thought it was asteroids or aliens, not monster(s?). And I'm dying to see this out of pure curiosity. The shooting style will probably annoy the piss out of me, but if I can't find this movie redeemable at all I will probably join you in saying it was over hyped. But... eh. I duno, I'm going to see it, but I may push it to the back of my mind once I see In the Name of the King.

well after a day to digest it all and think it over, it was probably a better movie than I made it sound out to be. I'm sure the majority of the people who see it will enjoy it. My guess is critics will give it 4 out of 5* and B grades. There are a few "Holy Shit" moments, but I think all the hype may lead to it being disappointing for many, like I said it was earlier. But, if you're looking for a monster movie, or any movie to go see (because IMO there isn't much in theaters now) then you should go see it.

It's probably an average, or above average movie with stellar marketing. Like Blair Witch, it will be remembered for the great promotion surrounding it, and few people will actually re-watch the movie with any great enthusiasm. Once the cat's out of the bag, there's nothing to be excited about.

That said, I'll probably see it at some point. Surely not on the 18th.

Agreed. It's a see once, move on to the next movie type of movie. I wonder if it will break even at the box office?

As for when I am going to see it, I will probably go on MLK day, or the Tuesday after I get out of work.

I advise anyone planning on seeing this to sit in the back of the theater. Just a word of warning, but the camera does get pretty jumpy in some parts and you're probably better off not sitting right up close for it.

90% of the time I always sit in the back of the theater. I don't think it matters where you sit, you still going to get that shaky cam feeling.

Yeah I have to sit in the back or else I get headaches.

Once I was forced to sit in the front row for Children of Men and it was huge mistake. I just ended up watching it standing up in the hall.

Also I really wanna see this opening day, however I am gonna be outta town, hopefully I won't have the monster ruined before I see it.

I went back last night to get an additional ticket and the girl that sold me the ticket said that the movie is pure genious, that I'm going to love it, its one of the best films she's ever seen. I asked her if they show the monster and she said that they do...that's all I wanted to know, she said she won't spoil anything because it will ruin it for me but she said its brilliant.
