Cloverfield Movie Thread - DVD Out on April 22nd

Well I talked to the guy who designed the creature, he is an instructor at my school (hes also doing star trek, The watchmen and Avatar right now)

He said he had them use his Z brush 3D model to make the figure out of. So it is the same model from the film.

And for the creature design, I think it was a fresh approach. Everyone has in there head what they think a scary town attacking creature should look like and most people will think of the same stereotype of that. If the monster looked the same as all other monsters, people would be complaining " Ohh they just used monster X" Blah blah complain sounds.

No one is satisfied, but from a pure designed standpoint he did a great job of giving up something new.
If it comes with the destroyed city then I see why its priced the way it is. Looks too big for me though.
it might... September is quite a bit away so they could include it.
I just bought one for $22 shipped through the official Slusho website...I looked there's nothing cheaper, not even eBay.

http://store.slusho.jp/

EDIT: Just noticed you found it...Seems like a legit site, I paid through PayPal.
So a month later and I finally got it...its pretty cool looking, I had totally forgotten I ordered it too. Nice surprise when I opened the shipping box last night.

Well folks, here it comes

Thanks for the info. I rarely buy dvds, let alone brand new on release, but this is one I'm definitely getting.

Since I don't buy them often, I didn't realize how quickly movies come out now. It only finished in theatres in February, and 2-3 months for dvd?

I remember it used to be about 6 months on average for a movie to come out... where have I been?

I wonder if I will get sick again during the home viewing of this movie?

Also wonder if stores will allow the return of this movie if it makes people sick? I know it's a NO when it gets opened but some stores might cut some slack.

Either that or put up a sign saying "NO RETURNS ON CLOVERFIELD"

If stores didn't offer returns on Pan's Labyrint because of the "no english" option, I doubt they will on Cloverfield.

I can see it now..."Pick up Cloverfield on DVD and Blu-Ray this tuesday and get a free Slusho puke bucket at participating locations"

I love alternate endings ,a nd I didnt get to see this in theaters. I can't wait to rent it.

I also read somewhere that the motion sickness will be less effective in home viewings since you have a smaller tv and your vision will be able to see staitonary objects in the room while you view it.
What made the theater so sickening to some people was the total darkness and hugeness ( the screen took up your whole viewing area) of the screen with no visible stationary objects for reference.

:puke:

My guess is that we will get a free T-Shirt (Slusho) or a poster from BB or CC... I am more than willing to bet that BB/CC/Target/WM will have there own promos to get you to buy from them....Unlike transformers, I won't be buying every version that I can afford. (still have my transforming 2 disc sealed :) )

True, they will most likely have the "SAME ITEM IF OPEN" policy stick with this one.

I have a feeling anyone interested in purchasing this by now kind of knows what to expect. But, I'm probably giving far too much credit to the average consumer.

Really, that's what rentals are for - to find out if you like the movie instead of dropping $20 on it and then wanting to return it. Same thing with video games, and to some extent, music (lots of streaming available for albums now), as well as reviews. As a frugal consumer, I have very little sympathy for people who find themselves in those kinds of situations (IE this movie made me ill, I want my money back).
I am interested in hearing the commentary and the features then the movie itself.
Same here. After I saw it I couldn't stop looking up info on the development and what little plot was available elsewhere. That and I'm a sucker for alternate endings.

I wonder if the alt endings are going to leak online first.

DVDrips of major releases always hit pre-retail, anywhere from a few days to weeks in advance. No way of predicting, though.

Yea...but the release of the dvd is about a month away so I can wait.

ugh.....

cover and back art has been posted.

They put quotes from movie critics on it..... bah

cloverfield-front.jpg

cloverfield-back.jpg

They actually put a picture of the monster on the back???

Granted, it's a tiny screenshot, but still... that seems to be against everything this movie was about. That's really disappointing to see. Of course, at this point, if you look anything up online about the movie, you can find pictures of it, but for fans who were waiting for the release and don't want to know anything, that sucks.

I'm no too fond of the critic's comments on the box either, but it's kind of inevitable.

what's with the Green tint? This monster was white (according to the toy coming out later this year). There is always a chance they will change the rear art to take out the monster.

I do have this feeling that we will see a special edition later on. :bomb:
what's with the Green tint?
Well, the green tint motif has always existed in the poster.
This monster was white (according to the toy coming out later this year).
And according to the movie, it was gray. I think I'll go with the movie's version.

Anyways, the boxart sucks big time, really tacky and boring (and I'm so, so tired and just completely over the "headless statue of liberty" visual; it's really overplayed).

I was thinking that it'd be really cool for the boxart to be mocked up like some sort of confidential government incident/case file, something along the lines of the Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier box. Oh, well.

Yea that is a good idea, to have some sort of classified type of casing for the dvd case.
Whoa...that cover art is horrid...specially those quotes...ugh!
This is why I don't read famous tv/newspaper critics reviews of movies.... they are always willing to cash out. Well at least David Manning isn't quoted on that one :p
i think cloverfield will be a huge monster like godzilla
:whee:

I take it Cloverfield has NOT been shown in your country yet....

Maybe he means that he expects the monster will become very well-known/iconic, like Godzilla.

nah...

Godzilla will always be the king of all monsters. In all polls, Godzilla always wins this.

Well, for better or worse, Godzilla is the only kaiju-styke monster that most Americans know.

Gamera, represent, that's all I'm saying.

Gamera is pretty awesome, but Godzilla is better than all

Doubtful there will be a hi def release any time soon. Paramount was HD-DVD, right? So if there's a Blu Ray release, it won't be day of.

Woo woo, Cloverfield will be seeing a special edition Steelbook release! There seems to be some confusion as to where it will be available in the US (FYE seems to be what a lot of people think), but in the UK, it's an HMV exclusive.

According to the listing on HMV, it's a 2-disc set, versus the 1-disc regular edition. It's unknown what the second disc will contain. It has different and exclusive new coverart, which I think beats the snot out of the recycled poster art seen on the regular DVD cover:

The nearest FYE is 60 fucking miles from me, so I'm probably going to need to aquire this through some other means, but I'm all over this thing. Must have.

Oh, and for kicks, here's a fan mock-up (I repeat, FAN MOCK-UP) of a full-blown evidence-style cover:

Man, CoffeeEdge... I kinda wish you hadn't posted the fan art, because now I'm just endlessly disappointed that the real release won't be nearly that cool.

The steel box SE looks pretty sweet, though.

I felt kinda like that, but I'm rather taken with the darker art on the Steelbook, as well. I'm happy with it.

Final Wars 2x Chainsaw Gigan > Godzilla > Ghidorah (or Kaiser Ghidorah) > Gamera. Seriously, turtles ftl.

*needs to hit kmart in search of a Destroyah figure*

Anyways back on topic, would it be wrong to buy the steelbook then use the movie disc as a frisbee as soon as a blu-ray one comes out? I just want the case... heh.

Well, don't be too hasty, because there are rumors saying the HD release will be quite delayed...

The nearest FYE is 20 minutes from me :)

If paramount is releasing a 2 disc in another region, then I am going to hold out for that one to hit region 1.
IGN posted a review of the DVD...seems pretty good. If I can find the steel case version I'll definately pick that one up.

Quite surprised that the video compression did a good job with all that unsteady footage and in the dark. I guess compression technology has come a long way to prevent/minimize pixelation during scenes like those featured in the movie. Unless stores are going to offer something cool with the release of this, I am going to hold out for the 2 disc edition in 6 to 12 months.

Alternate ending details, bah..:bomb:

Well, there is the gorgeous FYE/Suncoast exclusive Steelbook edition (which may or may not include some sort of exclusive 2nd disc, actually, if it's anything like the UK Steelbook edition):

Just saw this movie, eh it was alright. I found HUD fuckin' hilarious.

If I had to guess I would say that Rob and Beth are both dead, the whole 'I love you' ending was a great way to end it.

Yeah, Hudd was really funny. He wasn't annoying either like he could have been. I found the atmosphere to be better in the beginning of the movie better. There were a couple of other parts that were great, but overall the movie was just alright. After watching The Mist, this movie seemed tamed. I love the build up though and I was going "Oh shit!" when things started happening.

not that big of a fan of the movie but, to see nyc being destroyed like that was jaw dropping. Not of that cheap Godzilla model city look destruction.

I just saw this movie last night. My thoughts: It's no cinematic masterpiece but I think it does its job very well. It out Godzillas Godzilla. For anyone that is looking for a straight up monster movie, you're not gonna find a better one than this. And whoever was in charge of the special effects gets a kudos from me because they did something in this movie that really added to the realism in that they used the se to add to the story, it wasnt about the effects themself. By that, I mean, shit wasnt blowing up all over the place because it could .. the destruction in the city seemed tangible. Having said all that, this movie wasnt without its faults. My main complaint is whenever the monster is present .. and keep in mind, it would undoubtedly be the most incredible thing any of those people saw ... the guy holding the camera would film it for a second and then turn away and film his friends and say "Hey! Are you guys seeing that?! What is it?!" :bomb:. Well if you'd fucking look at it you could see what it is!!! :bomb:

well the latest issue of Cinefex has coverage of the special effects of Cloverfield. I will try to pick it up but I have been so damn busy lately.
