Well I talked to the guy who designed the creature, he is an instructor at my school (hes also doing star trek, The watchmen and Avatar right now)
He said he had them use his Z brush 3D model to make the figure out of. So it is the same model from the film.
And for the creature design, I think it was a fresh approach. Everyone has in there head what they think a scary town attacking creature should look like and most people will think of the same stereotype of that. If the monster looked the same as all other monsters, people would be complaining " Ohh they just used monster X" Blah blah complain sounds.
No one is satisfied, but from a pure designed standpoint he did a great job of giving up something new.
