Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

Batman Eternal is beginning to remind me a little of Knightfall, although maybe not as much as Arkham War did. It's funny, though, considering Superman has a new Doomsday story going on at the same time (which I haven't started yet). They're still getting the pieces in order (dafuq was up with those nanobot swarm things?) but the pace has picked up considerably. Never before has a comic character made we wish I could jump into the page and introduce his forehead to a 2x4, but Forbes has a way of triggering that feeling.

I will say that I'm not thrilled about Joker's Daughter playing a part in the story, seeing as I consider her Villains Month issue to be the worst comic I've ever read. Supposedly her recent one-shot was much better but I didn't buy it. I'm fairly curious to see what purpose she serves, 'cause she's only been in the one panel so far.

Anyone wants the first 8 issues, PM me.

Man, if Futures End turns out to be nothing but a very long, expensive string of foreshadowing and spoilers for Contact War or whatever the hell the next event is called, I'm gonna be pissed. The first three issues (well, #0-#2) were great... but #3 and #4 were kind of meh. They've teased the hell out of Green Arrow's role in "the war" so I'm already hooked in for the next event for that reason, but Futures End is only getting a couple more chances to go somewhere - especially with Batman Beyond, my primary reason for buying the title.

Joker's Daughter is in Batman Eternal? Bleh, glad I skipped on that.
Yup. It was a really odd scene, too. Like I said, you only see her for one panel but that whole scene was just odd because there was no context for it, really, unless it was set up in her recent one-shot or something. I'm willing to see where it goes before I start complaining about her, but it'll take something pretty substantial to justify using her in my eyes.

WWE Superstars is Comixology Summer Reading Free for today. I read the first four issues and it is actually a fun little noir. Not too wrestling focused either, more like little nods to wrestling. Wrestlers play various roles around the city: Captain Charisma Christian is the police captain, Randy Orton and Alberto Del Rio are running for district attorney, Great Khali and Hornswoggle are mob bosses. It's kinda crazy, it's a noir with the hero framed for a crime he didn't commit, corrupt cops, a femme fatale but then they'll do wrestling moves. It's kind of like a musical the way a wrestling move seems like an everyday occurrence in this world. WWE Superstars is geo-locked so Locke & Key: Welcome To Lovecraft #1 is also free. I've never read Locke & Key, not a fan of horror.

Batman Eternal just seems really odd, so far it's jumping around a lot. It feels like tie-ins to a big crossover. First the Joker's Daughter and now it seems Professor Pyg is going to be a large part of the story, two characters I really hate. I'm splitting it with friends and only buy an issue a month, but I may be out soon. It feels like there is five guys writing this or something *cough* I just am not sure where they'll go with another 40 some issues of this...

Thanks for the rundown on the WWE comic. I've got a friend who loves to watch wrestling and also has in increased interest in comics due to Arrow, so this may be the way to finally suck him into the realm of comic nerds.

As for Eternal, I'm probably in the minority but I actually like the schizophrenic feel to it. Bouncing around from character to character, to me, just shows how hellish Gotham has become with all of the shootings, bombings, diversions, backstabbings and even ghosts that the (dysfunctional) Batfamily has to deal with. They could be handling Stephanie Brown a little better though. I laughed my ass off when they finally got back to her and she was still just waiting by the payphone, crying, until she got chased off.

Meanwhile on the other weekly comic spectrum, New 52 Future's End almost feels intent on making the characters unlikeable. Firestorm is either a total dick or a whiny bitch. Grifter has no real character work and it almost feels like they're trying to say "Grifter is a badass, duh! Didn't you know?!" Mr.Terrific, total a-hole. Terry is barely in it and every other character is hardly established enough to feel really important.

Agreed.

This is my first major introduction to Firestorm, and it isn't exactly making me a fan. Same with Mr. Terrific. As someone whose only previous exposure to Grifter was in The Flashpoint Paradox, I'll say that he is at least coming off as the most interesting (and goal-oriented) character so far. Frankenstein is alright, I like him a lot because of Justice League Dark - I just hope he's given something to do soon. I like what we're seeing of Tim as of now, I'm very interested to see where it goes... but Terry is criminally underused so far, and to me, Batman Beyond being involved in a main DC title was the only real reason I started buying this book to begin with.

Like I said before, I really hope Futures End doesn't end up just being a lead-in to the next event.

I keep forgetting that image/wildstorm characters are now in the DC universe. I was watching "flashpoint" and I saw grifter in there and was like WTF?!

...So should we be worried that Constantine is starting off on Fridays, the typical "death slot" for tv shows? It's paired with Grimm, which I honestly can't stand but I hear it's actually fairly popular. Hannibal survived on Friday and, if I recall, Smallville lasted a couple of years on Fridays as well.

I wonder if NBC has low expectations for it?

Today's freebie is back to never heard of it stuff: Lola XOXO Vol. 1 #1 The preview wasn't anything I wanted to read, I'm actually saying pass on a free comic.

Just read last week's Batman Eternal. I forgot Stephanie Brown was even in the book. I'm passing on Future's End so far, I didn't like the FCBD or the first issue. I want to like it: Grifter is featured and in my younger days I thought he was a badass, Azzarello and Giffen and of course Batman Beyond! Anyone read last week's Batman Beyond 2.0 Digital? Crazyness.

Yeah, if you didn't like those two issues then you should stay away, because those were the best ones by far and it has only gone downhill from there. Personally I'm giving it another month to pick back up, if it doesn't then I'm dropping it.

I think I'll also skip Lola. Art looks good, but the story doesn't seem to be my kind of thing.

Probably not. I actually haven't been reading Wolverine because the first couple of issues were shitty, but I'm interested in reading just because of this.

I like it. They renumbered it again so it went back to #1.

Sabertooth is pretty brutal in this

I imagine whatever tatoos, scars, etc. will eventually be gone eventually anyways. He will be healing again someday.

Reading some of the X-men and Wolverine comics make me realize how much stuff I miss. When did Sabertooth escape hell? Before his current role as leading the Hand I remember him in Hell being chopped up by Puck. For that matter - how did Puck get out of hell?

The new Magneto book is REALLY good.
I picked up issue 1 last weekend and I absolutely want to get issues 2-5 as soon as possible. Typically when these solo spinoffs come out they feel entirely superfluous which is why I initially disregarded it but this definitely feels like a natural progression after his departure from Uncanny.

Today's free comic is from the current "it girl (who is not a girl)" Charles Soule: Letter 44 #1 The premise sounds good.

Deadpool gauntlet was a great fucking read
Gauntlet was ridiculous fun, Dracula's henchmen were great. In July the series is coming to print with a "new epilogue." I'm not sure how some of the jokes will work in print, the description of Marcus the Centaur Warrior was awesome.

Yeah it just kept going on and on I really did laugh out loud at that

Almost forgot today's free comic. Grimm Fairy Tales: Helsing #1 This one is from Zenescope. Anyone read anything from Zenescope? I always want to check out their stuff...but I look the art and think...mmmmmm...boobies....then I put the comic down.
From my understanding they always have great covers, but the interior artwork rarely ever seems to match the boob or buttastic covers. Which is usually why people buy the comic in the first place.

Today's free Insufferable #1 from Mark Waid and Peter Krause. Irredeemable from Waid and Krause was awesome, I expect this to follow suit. Also noticed Cable and Deadpool #1 and a few X-Men #1's free in the Marvel section.

After flipping (swiping?) through that is the case, man....I wanted boobs too

No surprise, there are only so many ways Snow White/Red Riding Hood/Cinderlla/Sleeping Beauty/whoever else can get their clothes torn off to give enough of a tease of their ample assets in the comic.

Dr. Fate's helmet.

DR. FATE'S HELMET.

Hot damn, maybe this show will deliver as much of the mystical DC universe as I was hoping for. Even if they don't, that's a helluva nice artifact to throw into an episode. It does give me a little more hope for an eventual Zatanna appearance down the line... and would bringing back Serinda Swan be too much to ask?  :D

I just went to the Thrillbent page and am disappointed to see that Insufferable is now a pay comic. It was always free before. I haven't checked it out in about 3 months though because the last update to the comic was November.

I did really like Incorruptible and Irredeemable.

Almost forgot Comixology's summer free again today! Afterlife With Archie #1 I don't like horror or zombies but I love Francesco Francavilla art, guess I'll check this one out.

Insufferable was free?! Man, didn't even know. First no good boobies and now find out I missed some free Waid and Krause? Double

The covers on those Zenoscope comics are pretty "epic", but even without the same level of boobiness, some of the comics are pretty good. I haven't ready any of their stuff for probably a year or so but I use to like the Wonderland series, Grimm Fairy Tales, and the short series called Fly.

I think Afterlife with Archie is pretty awesome. I have a very limited knowledge of the Archie-gang, so maybe that made it easier to like it.

Free today: 7th Sword #1 Samurai and robots...I'm in!

I read the Zenoscope Hellsing, a lot of good ideas, the writing was decent but the art was weak...at best.

Free today is a $19.99 graphic novel: Normandy: A Graphic History of D-Day, the Allied Invasion of Hitler's Fortress Europe Looks like Comixology is a week late for D-Day.

I'm assuming it's like Millar's other stuff, which I just do not like...at all.
Boo I finally try to download of these comics and I get this

There's two comic book conventions this weekend, one in Long Island and another where the usual one is in NYC. Guess which was more advertised. It wasn't the one in NYC, and it's marketed toward comic book collectors. Guess how that will go.

So what does everyone think of the so-called "DC Band-Aid" rumor going around? For those unaware, "leaked details" for DC's 2015 event, now referred to as Crisis 2015, say it is the endgame of both Futures End as well as the weekly Earth 2 book. The purpose of the event is supposedly to either merge the N52 and pre-52 timelines or just bring the pre-52 timeline back into play somehow. It'll feature both new and old versions of certain characters (two of whom you KNOW will be Batman) interacting with each other.

I'm torn. New 52 brought me to DC's side once and for all after only the occasional dive into Batman's books pre-reboot, and I've liked the majority of what I've read, and it's great if you're forgiving about certain inconsistencies and plotholes. On the other hand, it'd be great to get pre-52 versions of characters who have been botched since the reboot began.

I just don't see how it could do anything but turn the current continuity into more of a mess than it already is at times. Unless they launch a separate series of books under a "Classic DC" banner or something?

Assuming the rumor proves to be true, of course.

I think people get too hung up on continuity, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out if it is true.
That's pretty much my attitude too. I mean, for the longest time my top two favorite comic characters were Cable and Deadpool. If there's one thing I learned from them both, it was not to pay too much attention to continuity outside of whatever the current run is.

I'm for continuity if the stories from the past benefit the characters. Specifically Batman since the role of legacy plays such a role to the character and all his stories and I think works better for the character as opposed to the new 52, which really doesn't know how to handle all the Bat family members and instead has made things confusing as hell. I Still don't understand Tim Drake, Jason Todd, or Dick Grayson's full history with Bruce, it feels like they were with Bruce for a few months or so and then I don't know what happened. The rich history and stories just feel thrown away for what feels like nothing for all those characters.

Same with Flash since I still think Barry Allen is such a boring ass character. Without the family of Wally and the rest not to mention the Speed Force established by Waid in the pre-52, the character just feels stale. Like I was hoping that Barry after Flashpoint would have the knowledge of both universe's and be an interesting character in new 52. Nope.

Though the only characters I feel have benefited the most from the new 52 revamp have been the Vertigo characters and really it doesn't feel like too much of a stretch to transfer them from new 52 to the old universe since they weren't really used at all prior.

Another huge crossover event?! YAY! Can't wait! Sarcasm doesn't travel over the internet! I have no interest in continuity or New 52 or Old 52 or any of the mess. I like most good comic books, I don't like most awful ones. The rest of the stuff matters not. Unless this event makes The Question awesome again, then I can't wait.

<snip>

I think you forgot to mention Aquaman, he's like 952% less lame.

The lack of continuity is why I don't collect new comics anymore...Plus the people that ran the industry into the ground are now in positions of power and repeating the same mistakes. cough variants cough. Joe Quesada you fat fuck.

It is very difficult for adult readers to break into reading new books and know what is going on. I've read a few storylines in trade form, but every one I am met with a question like: "Who is Damien?", "Wait! Jason Todd is alive?", "Jim Gordon had a son?", etc.

You wanna know what's bad. Look up the comic Uber. They publish 3 covers a month of the book, and that's not including any special editions/variants.

Variants are cool, but they need to stop with this every comic needs 18,000 variants. Variants should be a rare thing as an incentive, not lets make 32 different covers of one issue.

I don't get the beef with variants. Multiple covers doesn't affect the comic and its good for people that like collecting or the artwork.
