Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

Pretty sure this Thor thing is so they can have a new Avengers team with a foundation made up of new versions of the big three. They already said there's a new Cap coming and Arno Stark is slowly becoming more and more Iron Man, so chick Thor was the last thing they really needed.
That's cool I like this idea. tony stark is like 85 at this point I thought they were going to make jubilee's kid the new iron man in the future he's pretty much iron man

Gender swap Thor will be part of the long list of Thor stand ins including the frog.

Not to say this wont lead to a good story with Aaron behind the helms.

Stark isn't that old. And Jubi's kid will never really be Iron Man. He's like Spider-Man 2099. He may be around, but he won't be the main character. Arno is just supposed to be evil Iron Man and fuck with Tony.

When they kill Wolverine, please don't bring him back! He should not appear in ANY comics, movies, etc after the death issue. Treat him like a real person. It will make us care about comic characters even more. Let's make the medium mature. Let the characters AGE physically every year so we can grow and bond together. Can you imagine Superman with white hair and wrinkles in 20 years from now? It will make both Marvel and DC universes much more interesting if the writers actually treat them like real humans with superpowers.

This New-Thor is just a way for Marvel to cash in. They will then resurrect the original Thor as "Thor-Classic" to record sales.

So what does everyone think? Will New-Thor be in charge longer than the Superior Spider-Man?

Will Thor get back his hammer or is Wolverine resurrected first?

I'm going to with Wolverine first. It is much easier to drag out a long redemption or whatever for Thor.

Hell, for Wolverine they can just build another transporter to take them to Heaven and pull him out like they did Nightcrawler about 4 months ago.

On that topic, Xaiver is a real jerk if it is that easy to come back. He didn't seem to care that much that everything has gone to hell, Cyclops is all messed up, and the X-men are at each other's throats. He just wants to stand around all day wearing his hippy Heaven pajamas. I'm joking of course, I think it is extremely stupid how they teleported Nightcrawler out of Heaven.

I think they should have a special issue where they dig up Nightcrawler's grave and see what's in the casket now.

Didn't Wolverine die a few years back and "go to hell" where he meet his real dad? He made it out of that, no reason why he can't do it again.

About the new Thor lets get this clear, gender swap Thor is not Thor. She only has the power of Thor. Just like Masterson and Beta Ray Bill. Thor is a person/god's name, but Marvel tends to treat it as a title at times. Sure it's a gimmick to cash in but that doesn't mean it can't be a good story for a while before Mr. Odinson's comeback (which seems to be on round 20 now)

It's a freakin' gimmick. Besides it's going to be pretty hard to sell a person on a $4 comic book with only 32 pages, especially women if they're really trying to get that demographic.

Storm, Wonder Woman, a Horse Man, and so many others held that hammer. Whatever.

And what happens in 20 years when new readers want the same thing as you?

Marvel sure hates money! They'll definitely let the most well known X-Man die and never bring him back! Yup, we can totally trust death in the Marvel and DC universe and know it's never a gimmick or a way to drive sales.

And everytime I see a female Marvel or DC character brought forth into the mainstream (uh, The View? Sure) I just think "girls, get them sewing machines ready."

You should give DC credit for the death of superman...I'm not sure if I pointed this out before or not, but he did have 4 titles at that time and he didn't appear in any of them for almost 2 years. That's about as legit as a death can be in the comic universe...and at that time it was somewhat original. (Though Crisis obviously killed off flash and supergirl - whom I can only assume are not dead anymore, since it seems like they've undone what Crisis did)...and we can not forget Jason Todd...wait he is back too isn't he? Well they at least tried. I mean beating Robin to death with a crowbar is pretty brutal, even by today's standards.

Uncle Ben's death is literally only death amongst the big two companies I can think of that has gone the longest uninterrupted in anyway. Otherwise I can't think of any characters from them who have stayed dead for years or whatever.

I believe Wolverine literally crawled out of hell after getting in a fist fight with the devil. Of course it must not be that hard to get out. Puck was down there and he's been running around last year or so. How the hell did he get out? Then there was Sabertooth. He was down there (from Wolverine killing him) and then had his head cut off with the magical sword which is suppose to never allow a wound to heal. So Sabertooth (who is currently running the Hand and being pretty much the Kingpin) must use gorilla glue to keep his head on.. That stuff is really amazing!

I don't remember the quote, but with Jason Todd there was some quote about how they wouldn't ever bring him back. It would be cheap, etc. I guess they didn't plan on somebody getting pissed and punching the fabric of reality.

Literally none of that will ever happen.People are growing and bonding with the characters just fine without aging the characters and it seems stupid to not let a character appear in movies after a comic death because they're not the same universe. If you want real aging read the silver age Earth-2 stuff where Batman dies and Dick becomes a grown up Robin.

I'm betting Thor will return between 1-3 years. Wolverine will be back first.

I guess they at least made an effort on some of the old deaths. Jason Todd was dead for 15 years or so.

Judd Winick? Is that the guy that was on the real world like 20 years ago?

EDIT: Looked it up. My god, what has happened to the industry.

Yeah, he's...a pretty terrible writer. He used to be one of DC's golden boys who helped plan future events for some reason I still can't fathom, but thankfully that's now passed.

Serious question, if you all of you hate comics so much, why bother with them?
I hate all things. But there are exceptions. You have to plow through the shit in order to find a gem. The same reason we live.

I don't think any of us hate comics, I think we hate certain storylines or directions the companies take. I'm probably the biggest hater of modern comics, mainly because I don't know who is who anymore and by the time I get around to reading a story, it has been undone in another storyline. But there are plenty of good stories out there...

My favorite story of all time is The Killing Joke. So much was accomplished with 48 pages. The art is perfect, the story is perfect. It shows that Batman and the Joker could easily have opposite lives had they viewed tragedy differently. It gave Joker an origin and Batgirl/Oracle one too. It really is a masterpiece.

Aight we are friends now. LOVE the killing joke.

But yea I dont like how comics are so insiderish. Like talking to LordVila today about it, theres like 5 freaking X men comics plus all the other related comics like x force, wolverine and the x men.

How the hell do you keep up with stuff?

I think im just going to try and gravitate more toward Image type comics that dont have all the baggage that marvel and dc stuff has.

I'm basically going back and reading trade paperbacks. The Batman ones are pretty safe to read. I didn't know who Damien was, but other than that, the usual suspects are the same.

I have always gravitated towards indie books, but now that Marvel and DC have done so many relaunches, I've given up.

There are the obvious ones like The Walking Dead and Y The Last Man, but here are a few that I liked:

I really enjoyed The Maxx series, but it is kind of a downer.

Bone is great (starts off really cartoony, but it is a great accomplishment).

The other guys/gals in the thread could point you in the right direction for newer stuff. I've heard Peter Panserfaust?, Saga, and the new Valiant relaunches are good, but I have not read them.

I liked a comic called The Sixth Gun, but I am not sure if it is still ongoing (I stumbled on the trades one day and was hooked).

OH! Locke and Key is excellent.

I'm sure there are plenty I missed, but they are all decent reads.

I would like to read through Cerebus, but I am not aware of a collected edition. I do have a lot of the early issues, but they are too rare IMO to read. That would be a huge undertaking and I am not sure if I am up for it.

It's not that hard, you can jump into most any series. I imagine X-Men is probably the most difficult to get into though. Started reading, wiki'd any characters I didn't recognize along with any specific event that may have been mentioned a lot. There's usually enough expository dialogue to catch new readers up on recent events, recap pages are extremely helpful too, especially for people like me who read a lot of different series but also have a terrible memory.

When I dove head-first into comics a few years back it didn't take me long to catch on... except for Batman. I tried getting into it smack-dab in the middle of Morrison's run and I had no hope of figuring out what the hell was going on. Buying recent issues of the other bat books at the time were just as puzzling, 'cause I believe the Ressurection of Ra's Al Ghul crossover was happening. That scared me off from Batman altogether until the New 52 started.

This reminds me... I still have those random Batman issues I bought, including at least 2 chapters of that crossover. Suppose I might as well buy the rest of 'em now.

Saga is supposed to be really good from what I hear

I read mostly non-marvel/DC comics just cause of all this shit. Ghostrider, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Guardians, Swamp Thing, Batman, Superman Unchained does it for me.

I've ditched Marvel altogether aside from Deadpool and Thunderbolts. Occasionally an event catches my interest, but I haven't bought any of 'em since... well, which was most recent - Siege or Schism? Came pretty close with Children of the Atom, but DC's Trinity War got my money instead.

Got pretty irritated with all of the changes they started making to align things more closely with the movie universe. It stills seems that the only time they allow anything to change to a notable degree is in-between whatever movies the characters may appear in, and even then it seems to be a rehash. Classic Fury goes away, Fury jr. steps up. Death of Peter Parker and the rise of Superior Spider-Man, a new character being given the title of Captain America soon (again!), Whatever happens to classic Thor which leads into Lady Thor. I half expect to hear news that X-23 will call herself Wolverine after Logan dies.

DC seems to be heading that direction, albeit slowly, adding characters from their TV shows into the comics or introducing relationships similar to ones on the show. Komodo was basically Malcolm Meryln, Emiko seems to be foreshadowing Thea's direction, Diggle and all-new Felicity Smoak are becoming regulars in GA's book. Hell, two of the tv writers are taking over Green Arrow's comic soon -  And those are just changes being made to one of the books I'm reading right now.

And I honestly have to wonder if any of this is really gaining them new readers? I thought sales were getting worse, not improving.

Im reading green arrow now (on book 24ish currently, have from 17 to current issue) and thought the same as you having seen the show (still have 4 episodes of season 2 to watch). Lot of similar stuff between comic and show, but as I love the show, not necessarily a bad thing to me.

Show basically gained me as a new reader, never really got into comics before and the show got me interested in the character and I have started to buy up GA comics, which has lead me into looking into others, etc.

Sixth Gun is still going on - I'm a big fan.

Everyone says Chew is amazing, but I've never read an issue even though I have some volumes laying around.

For some other recommendations of ongoing ones

The current Ninja Turtles is really good in my opinion.

Invincible (along with The Guardians of the Globe)

Alex & Ada - pretty good so far - starting slow but seems interesting. I read Girls, The Sword, and then the super-heroine one they wrote too and liked them all.

Red Sonja - I know this is a little cheescakey, but I've really liked the last 5 or so years of Red Sonja

Walking Dead

Deadly Class - only comic I've been able to get the gf to read in a long time

American Vampire - may be the best thing out there. Consistently for the last 3 years it is probably the best think I've read

Fables - probably the 2nd best thing I've been reading

Saga - amazing art. Like it so far.

I suppose, in a way, the show gained me as a reader too. I believe FCBD was right around the time #17 came out last year. My local comic shop had some crazy discounts on new releases, and it was tiered based on how many books you bought. I grabbed a bunch of random New 52 stuff to try finding something new I would like (which is how I discovered Justice League Dark and, for a while, All-Star Western) and Green Arrow #17 was one of 'em. I wasn't in love with the show at that point, but I did grab it with the mindset of "Well I watch the show, maybe this'll be okay?" since the issue seemed to have some hype behind it. If it weren't for the discount and the fact that it was the total opposite of the show (season 2 hadn't started yet, and season 1 was slightly too Nolanish for me) and had some crazy mythical/supernatural elements to it, I never would have started reading it regularly.

Got interested in GA from there. Longbow Hunters was good, I loved the art - it was described to me by someone as Green Arrow's The Dark Knight Returns which piqued my interest. I've always intended to buy the Denny O'Neil Green Lantern/Green Arrow tpb but it was always primarily due to the fact I'm a casual Green Lantern fan and it didn't seem to be steeped too deeply in GL lore. Now I'm a Green Arrow fan, so I should probably stop being cheap and just buy it already...

I just got in some copies of longhow hunters (2 copies of 2 and 3 and 1 of 1) but havent read them yet. 10 bucks shipped off ebay.

Mainly got them after seeing on wikipedia that the show took a lot from them.

bought the first 15 issues from the time that kevin smith wrote it, read most of quiver, its not bad, its just got too much JL and batman etc in it.

Joe Quesada's Captain America reveal on The Colbert Report was hilarious. Despite how successful CA:TWS was, Colbert's audience had no clue who Sam Wilson was - and even when Quesada quickly turned to the audience to rephrase it as "The FALCON will be Captain America!" there was only slight applause.

Hal Jordan is the best GL. I would recommend starting at the Neil Adams GL/GA run. If you skip that you are missing out.
Yeah, Hal is the only one I've ever really had any attachment to, despite growing up with John Stewart on the Justice League cartoons. Stewart went back and forth from being boring to overly emotional, bordering on whiny. The first comic book I was ever given (back when I was 6 or 7) had Kyle Raynor as GL, but I really don't know much about him. I'll definitely get around to Green Lantern/Green Arrow. I'd start now if I wasn't already going through Hellblazer. I need 'mo money!

You know what they should've done, just have the movie Falcon be Captain America, considering Chris Evans' contract is up.

I honestly don't care who's the next Captain America, since mainstream comics just reeks of desperation. DC has practically annihilated its universe HOW many times since 2000? How many times has Marvel put its characters through universe changing events, while still providing little to none character growth (and I don't mean exploring new aspects I mean like letting them age and change as they did). What would've been inspiring and really cool is if the next Captain America was a Native American woman, heck even a Mexican one. That's a huge game changer. "New directions?" Ha!

I have a sizeable Green Arrow Grell collection, and those things are very depressing, considering most of the time Queen doesn't really get the guy without a price, and continues a death spiral.

The quest to resurrect Batman's son is now on. I think it has been like a year since Damien died.

Speaking of Batman, I really like Batman but feel like it has been kind of a mess since the new 52.

Batman is sad and angry every 10 minutes for a new reason. First it was when the Mad Hatter killed Bat's girlfriend who Bat had just revealed his true identity too. He was really angry for about 10 minutes that the new love of his live was dead because of him (also tortured and thrown out of helicopter).

Batman was very sad and angry after the Joker kidnapped the Bat Family. Joker in the end didn't really seem to do anything to them, but apparently he told them some kind of secret that made everyone angry and Batman. Of course nobody knows what that secret is and nobody will say what it is. I'm guessing the writers haven't figured out what that secret is.

Finally then Damien is killed. Batman is all angry and sad for a few issues, but then back to normal. But now he is sad again because he needs to resurrect Damien.

Out of all three of these things it feels like Batman's new girlfriend who learned his true identiy was the least important. Batman was broken up about getting her killed for one  issue.

The Joker thing just felt like a waste because nothing was really changed except that the Family is angry at Batman, but it seems like that is kind of forgotten for the most part now.

Another Bat thing that really annoyed me was the whole Gotham war in the Forever Evil storyline. The spent so much time building up Bane over months to just have him lose it all in a fist fight with Batman in about 3 pages. The only part I really enjoyed of Forever Evil was the Gotham war with Scarecrow and Bane, but then in the end it changed nothing and did nothing.

That sounds like Batman to me. If anything I think reading that many Bat titles is the problem being as there is no real solid continuity.

I did like Damien though. New 52 just wrecked bat continuity by trying to keep the old and say but wait half of it didn't happen. Granted with so many titles it was a mess to keep up with stuff before, but now... I really have no idea what issues fall where especially with Batman eternal being a weekly. I don't know what I should be reading, what order I ahould be reading it in, I've felt that way for four months now so I haven't bought books, and that's what ultimately costs them readers.

I Like Damien alot. I Think he's the main reason why I can forgive certain aspects of Morrison's run in that he took a character that could've died a little brat in less than a year, but instead gave time for the character to develop. That and the team of Damien and Dick Grayson is still one of my favorite things done with Batman in years.

So I just finished New Warriors #7.  Good setup, return of an old warrior.  One problem.  Jake Waffles turns into a different breed.  He had floppy ears and now they're pointed.  I realize he only appeared in one prior issue but when it's the issue immediately before hand, it's kind of a detail you'd like to get right.

Well Age of Apocalypse turned out to be a damn good read. The prologue was boring like I've mentioned before, and the Generation Next chapters with Kitty and Colossus dragged it down a little bit here and there for me, but otherwise it was great.

Did anyone here read the somewhat recent Age of Apocalypse ongoing? I know it spun out of Uncanny X-Force, and I believe I have those volumes in hardcover waiting to be read (Dark Angel Saga?) but I'm just curious if anyone here has any opinions on the ongoing. My "to read" list keeps growing...

Finally got my Injustice vol. 2 hardcover, so I'm looking forward to reading that soon and then finally getting around to my Year Two comics. Volume 2 of Hellblazer will be wedged in  there somewhere.

It was alright seeing AoA Jean was cool.

And I haven't been reading comic news, but what's the deal with the new Batgirl? Meaning is someone else taking the mantle again not named Casandra Cain? Is Barbara Gordan finally going to where she goddamn belongs now? Meaning behind a goddamn computer and being the google for all superheroes in the DC universe when they don't have a smart phone on them.

And I like the design, but fuuuuuu I like my Batgirl like I like my women, quiet and prone to violent tendencies and trying their hardest to maintain homicidal tendencies. I Have been...in alot of bad relationships you guys.

So new warriors led to me picking up some scarlet spider back issues. Should I dare try to find trades with kaine from the whole 90s spider time. I heard most of the stuff surrounding clone saga was grade a crap, but I do have fond memories of ben reilly from new warriors vol 1

So we have official confirmation from Geoff Johns that the DC cinematic universe and the various tv shows will never be linked. It's to be expected, I guess. He also went on to say that there will never be a Batman or Superman on the shows, but said absolutely nothing about Batman's band of sidekicks showing up which, honestly, I think is much more requested for Arrow.

The best news from him, though, is that there will be a 2 hour crossover event with Arrow and Flash on their eighth episodes of the upcoming season. Felicity will be showing up on Flash in episode four.

Still Barbara. A fire took out her apartment and all of her current gear, leaving her with a makeshift costume and gadgets because... well, we all know how Bat-themed vigilantes don't like to prepare for possible disasters! Her looking younger is just the artist's weird interpretation of her. I'm fine with it, though, not being a Batgirl reader myself. Those cutesy covers will definitely attract the eye of teenage girls, which DC is clearly trying to get to. Whether or not they'll be able to get girls into comic shops who aren't already comic readers is the most important part of that battle, though.

It'd be alot more easier than Marvel trying to appeal to women in their thirties and forties watching The View.
