Comic Book Discussion Thread (Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Top Cow, IDW, Indy, etc)

I don't care about Darkseid or Thanos being similar. One of those villains are better known for those fights that comic books are known for, and the other is known for sitting on his throne and his zeal for jewels.

If it helps any, Parker is about to be the token white gut on the mighty avengers back in the comic verse. I mean she-hulk is green I don't care what you say, and White Tiger is latino so that'll leave spidey as token. It may take a while but eventually diversity comes.

 Check the fine print beneath Cage's hand.  His pose couldn't be more appropriate.

So Guardians made mad bank and I remember a few months back them saying if it does become hit that they'll do more of the lesser known titles such as Runaways, which was one of the ones specifically name checked. I Look forward to our Disney/Marvel movie overlords taking over the cinemas for next few years.

Absolutely.

I think most people thought Marvel was scraping the very bottom of the barrel with Guardians of the Galaxy, but I knew it was going to be a major hit based solely on my impressions of Rocket Raccoon in Marvel vs Capcom 3. That is just a perfect character. Angry, foul-mouthed, hilarious - and he's a tiny bipedal raccoon! My non-nerd brother has been saying I'm nuts for hyping up the movie for the past couple of years. We saw it yesterday and he and his wife both loved it. She cried twice during the more sad moments, and he cried throughout from laughing so hard.

I'm really looking forward to whatever long-shot franchise they adapt next.

EDIT: Oh goodie, my internet died when I submitted this post and somehow did it twice. That's... stupid.

I'd much rather see a Netflix series on the Runaways than a film, but either way seeing it in any form would be good. I'd really like to see some work done towards Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and Thunderbolts.

I Had faith on it based solely on James Gunn always having fun movies (goddamn, Ellen Paige in Super is still one of my favorite performances ever), but everyone felt like they were totally into the film as well. Batista was more hilarious than I thought he'd be and easily stood well alongside everyone in getting the emotional stuff right and the humor. Also I'm glad they didn't go full on Nova armor in the movie yet. Even the lesser roles like the one John C. Reily had, had their memorable bits or Michael Rooker. Also outside of Ronan, it didn't feel like a Marvel movie, which I think is a compliment more for Marvel if anything in that it felt like a Star Wars 80's type space opera than standard fare comic book film. It does help give more diversity to the Marvel movie brand, which now definitely benefits everyone.

I'd be fine with whatever. I'm more amazed we're this far into Marvel films where really anything can be taken into consideration as a possible franchise now.

Next up: Stingray solo movie.
Isn't he considered a villain now after what he did to Steve Irwin?

any of you guys have The Last of Us comic from last year? Either the normal version or the one that came with the game. Trying to find a NM copy on ebay can be tough sometimes with the crappy pics that some sellers take, so I figured i'd try here.

You mean the Dark Horse single issues or the trade or what? I Picked it up last year when it was released monthly. Enjoyable.

So Marvel is releasing Abnett/Lanning's Guardians run in a series of tpbs. Anyone recommend it? I've had the itch to track it down before, but I wanted to make sure that I liked the movie versions of those characters at the very least before buying anything.

Finally read the Bendis FCBD GotG issue introducing Venom to the team. It was okay, and earlier today I considered picking up the series from the point where Venom joins, but I'm just not much of a Bendis fan anymore. I think I'll skip on the new stuff, at least until he's gone.

ANYTHING by Abnett and Lanning are worth owning. Their Legion Lost, Resurrection Man, Annihilation, Nova, everything. They're fantastic at write team/crossover based books and know how to make a credible threat.

Just watched Amazing Spider-Man 2. What the hell was up with that soundtrack? Just awful. The first Electro sequence was pretty damn awesome except for that ridiculous track mirroring Max's thoughts. Made him seem too damn whiny.

I liked the movie in general, though. It was very cheesy and comic booky, but not in the same way Spider-Man 3 was. I love how Garfield's Spidey is a goofball. Not quite as impressed with his intellect. Low standards at Midtown High, I suppose, if he was the second smartest student. Action scenes looked great, and they did justice to the big scene as well.

Gotta admit, I'm not too excited by the idea of a Sinister Six movie. Goblin was botched, not just in his design but the execution of the whole thing. Dafoe's GG, despite looking even more ridiculous, had a much more sinister presence. I don't blame the actor, though, he did what he could and sold it as best he could. I have a hard time believing that was his laugh though.

Man, if nothing else I wish we could get a Marvel Studios netflix series for Spidey. It's just becoming more and more frustrating that characters like him, the X-Men, Silver Surfer and Galactus can't be used by them in their cinematic universe. How awesome would it have been to catch a glimpse of Galactus sitting atop his world eating machine in a video at the Collector's museum in GotG?

Marvel having the rights to X-Men and Spidey would be bad for smaller characters. They probably would never have done guardians of the galaxy or Ant man if they had those rights.

The best X-Men stories have always been when they're the focal point of everything and really when it feels like it's own universe. I Think that rings true for the comics and the movies. X-Men has a wide and diverse enough range of characters and stories and teams that there is no need for them to share the spotlight with the Avengers, in fact I think it would kinda hurt them in that they have to possibly tie things in with a bigger movie when they do just fine on their own. I Can't imagine things like Days of Future Past or Apocalypse having as grand a scale if it were having to compete with other in house movies. So totally fine with X-Men at 20th Century Fox since it just gives them a bit more creativity and focus on a world all they own that they have.

As for Spidey, kind of the same, but man, I look at Sony and what they're doing and it just feels like the character could be doing ALOT better. Also there's the fact that goddamn I hated Amazing Spider-man 2 and how Sony is planning out the Spidey movie franchise just feels like they have the interest of making money more than telling a story. Things like planning spin-off's for secondary character's (at best) that really at least in the realm of comics can't really stand on their own. And Sony gunning to make a spin-off with a female character from Spider-man? I'm all for a stand alone heroine movie, I think the time is right, but I don't think any of Spidey's female case that can hold a movie on their own. Black Cat? Silver Sable? Maybe the Gwen Stacy Spider-woman because that concept at least for the comic sounds interesting, but otherwise I doubt they'd go for that so we're really stuck with something that is hard to get excited about. Just where he's at now I'd rather see him at Marvel/Disney just because I don't have any faith in Sony doing him justice, especially in the long run.

Fantastic Four though I'd definitely love them to go back to Marvel/Disney. Merely because so many of their stories benefit from the guest appearance of other heroes and they are what I dare say the closest to grounding the Marvel universe in reality by being a family and usually playing a role in every huge Marvel event (compared to Spidey who is best defined as a loner or outsider looking in and X-Men who are caught up in their own huge events). That and things like Galactus and Silver Surfer would benefit the now open space area of the Marvel/Disney movie universe.

I suppose I should have specified that I wish they could use those characters from this point on, now that the MCU is in full swing. It's a shame that the cosmic MU has just been opened up and Silver Surfer can't join in on the fun. That's the most painful one to me, honestly. I loved the crap out of that short-lived Silver Surfer cartoon from the 90's where Thanos was the main baddie.

It would be nice to get a tv show starring lesser mutants, though. It would be GREAT to have an Age of Apocalypse movie with brief cameos featuring alternate versions of established MCU characters.

It also sucks knowing that my dream team of Avengers (from the start of New Avengers from a few years back) will never assemble in live action. Hell, they haven't even brought in all of the members from that roster that they DO own.

I just think it's unfortunate that certain bits and pieces were lumped into the various deals between studios. Never liked the FF myself, but Galactus, Surfer, Skrulls (Super Skrull in particular) and Doctor Doom have always been interesting to me. I'm assuming the Shi'ar Empire is lumped in with the X-Men rights? Those are particular pieces I would have loved to see in the MCU.

That's all I'm trying to get at.

A Dr. Doom movie would be more interesting than another FF movie. It's a shame they portrayed him as a smarmy businessman rather than the regal scientist he's supposed to be in those shit movies.

That was by far my biggest disappointment with those movies, even more so than Tropical Storm Galactus. They could not have made him any less imposing. The costume wasn't terrible, I liked what they were going for, but the actor and the way his storyline was written was terrible.

And how amazing would it be for a Fantastic Four movie to be set from Doctor Doom's point of view rather than the FF themselves? He could be played up as a tragic figure who just crosses the line. It'll absolutely never happen... but I'd buy that ticket.

I actually caught a few minutes of the second one last week. I'd forgotten just how bad it was. Terrible acting across the board.

I own that one on Blu-Ray simply because of Silver Surfer. Paid $7 for it and got a free ticket for X-Men: First Class... so I prefer to think I actually paid nothing for it.

It's on my "shame shelf" hidden behind some boxed action figures (including a box set of 3.75" GotG toys I've had for 2 years, funny enough) alongside such guilty pleasures as the Arthur remake and AvP: Requiem. Yup...

"Speedball said to tell you that you are too late, they saved everyone without you, and you suck."

Invincible is going pretty fast and furious at the moment - but it does kind of make the last few yeasr of Invinc Universe and Guarding kind of a drag. Especially with Kid Thor and Knockout, didn't they just get married like 3 months ago.

I had on my shelf the first few volumes of Chew that I picked up at a yardsale. I finally sat down and read them. I'm really liking it an will probably catch up on it.

For the past few days I've been trying to rack my flipping brain and looking through my comic collection (mostly 80s) for a certain issue that talks about the 50th or 45th Anniversary (or something) of Action Comics. For that anniversary, DC had printed a trade paperback or hardcover that basically collected several issues of Action Comics and reprinted them entirely, advertisements included. A Google search doesn't help since it thinks of just the reprint of issue one or something else entirely. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

So IST is having a Moving Sale until August 18th to clear stock for their upcoming move to Tennessee. 3-8% discount on certain publishers and comics.  Sale can end sooner then noted.  Check out the site for details.

Most likely I'll order a few more Hellboy LE's or BPRD Omnibus, but I'm always tempted to start a new series.  I just don't know what to choose.  Anyone know if the Mind Mgmt HC are deluxe?

Edit:  I just realized I had DC/Vertigo in mind when I asked about Deluxe editions.  :wall: So I'm assuming Mind Mgmt is just standard since it's Dark Horse?

I Finished The Wake. Huh, um, yeah. That ending didn't really fit with the rest of the series and I still don't know how I feel about it.

So I watched Man of Steel a few minutes ago. It wasn't too bad. I expected from all the hate that it would have been worse.

I hate the Star Wars clone ship shots though. I never noticed shots like that until the new star wars movies..Where you are following a ship and then it zooms in. There were a lot of those in Man of Steel.

I thought Zod would be lame, but he wasn't bad. That guy who played him creeps me out in real life, so I was more comfortable seeing him as an alien. I HATE his character on boardwalk empire. I find his voice/speaking pattern irritating.

The beginning of the movie looked more like a scifi type movie than what I would imagine krypton would be like. A little too "matrixy".

I wish the AI was braniac. I'm curious why they didn't have it be him/it. Maybe too many people would recognize the name? They put lexcorp on the trucks...

I really liked the flashbacks/backstory sections.

The main problem was fighting in the middle of dense populations. There is one point when he is fighting the two kryptonians that he tries to fly away (so maybe it wasn't an option), but I would think he would try to get them to follow him to a remote area.

I would think the military would be more careful when shooting missiles...and sorry supes, but telling people to "get inside" isn't going to do much.

I want to say "Oh those people in metropolis wouldnt hang around to watch the destruction", but after seeing 911 footage it seems like it is human nature to stand and watch when you don't realize the danger you are in at the time.

As far as the glasses...Back in the day they said that the glasses obscured people from recognizing him. They aren't regular glasses you would buy at the store. I can't remember if they say he hypnotized people or if they were made of a material that did it. I think they missed an opportunity in Man of Steel. They could have easily chalked it up to kryptonian tech that we don't understand.

It seemed like the movie was rushed even though I think it was a rather long movie.

These are my initial thoughts. I'm usually a tough critic on comic movies, but this one wasn't terrible.

Yeah, I liked it in general... especially that first time in theaters. The final twenty minutes or so just drag on and on with subsequent viewings.

The A.I. not being Brainiac was a HUGE mistake. They would have already had him introduced and ready for further use in a sequel. They could have added a few extra seconds to show Jor-El uploading it into Kal-El's ship and everything. It may or may not ever happen, but I'd love to see a Superman movie with Brainiac as the primary foe. My favorite episodes of the DCAU Superman cartoon featured him.

Never had a problem with the new Zod, myself. This version didn't have a particularly iconic look, but the Terrance Stamp version doesn't exactly look menacing these days. I just thought the bulky armor was kind of generic, except for the helmet designs. I think Faora kind of stole Zod's thunder a little bit, though, because the action scenes with her zooming all over the place were my favorites.

Overly long final fight aside, my biggest gripe was that Clark didn't seem to put much effort into keeping the Kryptonians away from bystanders. As I recall, he even flew Non (or whoever the new big'un was) from the Kent farm to the very middle of town.Rookie mistake, I suppose? The lack of a true fortress of solitude somewhat bothers me too, but ehh... it's not a huge deal.

The glasses thing I think they said it was a little of both, since Superman in the Silver Age was smart enough to cover enough bases.

For me, the level of hate that I should have for Dragonball Evolution has actually been given to Man of Steel. If it were some other action movie, I wouldn't have given too much crap over it. But since this is a Superman movie released seven years after the previous one, I guess it was a major disappointment for me. In that time, we should've gotten a few more, but somehow with Nolan's films everybody expected the WB's movies to be edgy compared to the fun fare that Marvel consistently puts out.

That isn't really a criticism of the movies, just the trend. Man of Steel is the first in the new series of DC movies, so I think it's too early to complain about the direction they're taking.

Just read the whole thing and I agree. It feels like Snyder gave us all the Lost treatment.

I also liked the first half with just the crew a lot more.

Well, color me impressed. Assault on Arkham is actually pretty damn good. Everyone comparing it to Ocean's Eleven are dead-on, it definitely has that style for the majority of its runtime. It's surprising how far WB Animation has been allowed to go with these animated movies, too. Wasn't expecting a Harley Quinn sex scene, or her and Killer Frost stripping down quite frequently throughout the movie. Got to the point where it started to seem excessive like a lot of anime fanservice out there, but ehh, didn't particularly ruin it. Will probably give some inattentive parents a surprise though. Ha!

Its place in the Arkham  game timeline is still hazy, but enough references are made that you can figure out a general time period. Harley, Deadshot and (I think) Killer Frost reference the fact that they've worked on the team together before, so hopefully that'll fit in with what a sequel to Akrham Origins might do with the team.

Yeah, the first half had alot more character work and sense of hopelessness that made it a great read. Second half was...I was expecting answers, but really got none of that and it felt like I was missing two or three issues helping better explain things or lay it out better. That and none of the character's were anywhere as interesting.

That's why I enjoy DC Animated movies more in general then what Marvel puts out in comparison. Hulk Vs is the only title that comes to mind I actually enjoyed. I plan to watch Batman: AoA tonight so here's hoping it sits well with me.

On a separate note, anyone here have experience with Ed Brubakers Sleeper series? I'm leaning towards purchasing the Omnibus today. It's only 44% off, which means I can probably get it slightly cheaper later on, but it's one of those spur of the moment, caught my eye sort of purchases. I was almost tempted to start collecting the TMNT comics, but I just can't bring myself to commit to such a project atm.

I really had to rein myself in when Comixology had their IDW TMNT sale last week. Came close to spending nearly $50 to get EVERYTHING aside from the first two volumes, which I already read. Decided to settle on volumes three, four and five instead. The first two were GREAT, though. I love how they started off in their red masks and transitioned to their individual favorite colors, although it was confusing as hell to read up until that point. Someone forgot to tell the artist to keep their weapons in the frame at all times! Haha.

Just finished The Witcher mini-series. It ended up being pretty freakin' underwhelming. There was a whole lot of meandering in a spooky, shifting house... a couple of brief altercations with various monsters, and then finally an anti-climactic resolution to a "mystery." It accomplished absolutely nothing and wasn't entertaining after the second issue. Too much time was spent on pointless sex scenes with a succubus followed by more wandering through the house. Probably could have been a decent animated short, but made for a crappy comic. And it was $4 per issue.

I gave it an "okay". It was entertaining enough when flying home on a plane.

It felt like they tried to shove it way too many characters so it was hard to really care about any of them. Also combine that with how they would just straight up kill people all the time - which I guess is okay for villains but makes it hard to care about them.

With all the characters and their deaths, it was even harder to care when they died.

The only one that I felt a little bat for was Black Spider. He isn't quite a villain, more like the Punisher. Watch him obviously stumble around and then his head pop off kind of sucked, but then he barely had any role in the move.

King Shark felt like he was Killer Croc-lite, and who cared when he went pop.

Frost was apparently killed by Bane when he threw her car and it exploded with her inside. Though it looks like she killed Two Face right beforehand. She froze his head like she did the guy she killed earlier, but he is in the Arkham games.

The movie just kind of felt like a mess to me. They wanted to make it the Deadshot movie, but they needed Batman to bring in the sales.

I think it would've really helped if they cut down on the characters especially for a 60 minute film. They shoved in almost everyone.

Deadshot, KGBeast, Frost, Shark, Quinn, Joker, Boomerang, Riddler, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Two Face, Bane, etc.

The amount of characters didn't bother me. Most of them were glorified cameos put in place to add more enjoyment to the big escape at the end. Hell, even KGBeast was basically a cameo, he was only there to die four minutes into it so Waller could look intimidating.

I did feel bad for Spider and Shark. King Shark was basically just a big dumb kid, plus he and Frost had that weird attraction going on. I really don't think you're supposed to feel for Deadshot, especially when he knowingly used real bullets instead of rubber. He's got a kid, sure, but that's not a big factor. The only time I was on his side was at the very end when he surprised Waller.

As for Two-Face, I think he was gasping for air when he stumbled away, so she didn't freeze him all the way through. Just a layer of ice over his skin. Killer Frost herself could also still be alive, though that could be wishful thinking.

It's not my favorite animated DC movie, but it's up there. Red Hood and Flashpoint are still my favorites, and obviously the BTAS movies are higher quality as well. AoA was a fun one though.

From what I hear, Assault on Arkham sounds like all of the gratuitousness of the New 52. If they made a Teen Titans movie with the same style, I wonder if it'll end up being a fap tape of Starfire.

Wonder Girl, more likely than not, assuming it would be an actual adaptation of a New 52 story. Starfire has been palling around with Red Hood and Arsenal since the reboot. I don't even recall if she was ever a Titan in the new continuity.

But yeah, seems likely.

Not sure if any else has been reading it but Ultimate FF failed utterly throughout but that last issue was a hot mess. Jesus.

I'm liking the current run of TMNT even more every month. Shredder and Krang's confrontation was pretty awesome and the exact opposite of how it was the in the campy 90's show.

At SDCC a few weeks ago Eastman drew a very quick sketch of Shredder for me. I think I'll get a frame for it and hang it up since I have a non-variant of the version of the comic to play with.

Speaking of sketches - what is the protocol for getting a sketch from someone? I see the blank sketch variants for sale and always wonder how people get the nice sketch? I of course love my Shredder sketch, but I see people online with their "nicer" sketches, and wonder how that worked.

I had Tim Seely sign a Hack/Slash poster this last weekend. I kind of wish I had something better for him to sign. Next year I will have to plan ahead since I really enjoy Hack/Slash.

The TMNT comic got me back into comics. I'm trying to slowly get down to only buying about 5 - 8 different books soon.

And yeah, it's pretty awesome.
