Commander Amarao's eyebrow raising Anime thread.
First one to PM me with fansub group recommendations for Death Note wins absolutely nothing.
I'm foregoing the PM, but the answer is Animanda. It's pretty much a perfect release.
Damn. It seems that fansubs for Death Note has dropped quickly after it was licensed. I was hoping to check one out before it starts coming out here. It'd be nice if AS got the rights to air the show.
What do you mean? I have *no* trouble finding Death Note fansubs, and there are still three groups actively subbing it. The show has been confirmed as licensed since January, and not much has changed.

Uhh... why is Animanda still releasing Haruhi subs? Seriously, they just put out episode 10 last month. Unless they absolutely destroy Strato's a.f.k. releases as far as accuracy and quality are concerned, I have no idea what they're doing.

Anyway, thanks for the info, Kirin. Actually, thanks for all the Read or Die fanboyism as well, since I'm set to buy that in the Geneon sale. Still looking for something to fill the rest of my ten DVD order though, but it won't be for another week or so, so I have some time to wait for recommendations and think about it.

Still looking for Volume 5 of Evangelion though.

I don't think I've posted in this thread before...but I figured I'd join in on the conversation since I'm getting back into an anime kick (thanks to the Rightstuf sale :) ).

Ironically enough, the sale is encouraging me to watch some more of what I picked up in last years sale. Yeah, I'm kinda behind... So anyway, I started Ai Yori Aioshi (sp?) this week, and I'm really enjoying it so far. Has that Ah! My Goddess! vibe to it, with just the right touch of fan service (just enough to be amusing, not enough to be soft-core porn). Characters are enjoyable and animation is pretty nice. I'm through the first disk (first 5 episodes), and it hasn't been a labor to watch at all.

I may try to finally finish watching Haibane Renmei this weekend. I'm over half-way through that, it's short, and I was enjoying it. I don't have a good reason why I stopped.

I decided to get that instead of Gungrave on my last order. It looked interesting. I made 4 orders and I am contemplating a 5th. The prices are just too good to pass this stuff up.

I placed 1 1/2 this time, and the same last year. I still have (from the last sale) Heat Guy J, Last Exile, Koi Kaze (afraid of this one, but morbidly curious...), Trigun, Texnolaze (sp?) and more I'm forgetting that I need to watch.

EDIT: But if you place a 5th, definitely get Gungrave. It's really, really good.

I probably will. I'd like Doki Doki too if the sold out volumes come back. I'm also looking at Sugar.

The ones I were looking to get from a.scarywater and animesuki have disappeared since the last time I saw them. I think it was Live-Evil that I was looking at at that point. All the ones I see on there now haven't gotten that far yet. If there are some out there, mind suggesting the best one you've seen?

I sent you a PM with some useful links to find what you need.

Cool. I'll check them out when I get a little more time.

Your tastes seem similar to mine. We hate the same things XD

I highly recommend Gunbuster. Was made in the late 80s, and it's a great action show. I've talked about it before in this thread, and the show really is a classic for a reason. http://www.bandaivisual.us/gunbuster1/

Any of the UC Gundam stuff. Macross is also really good.

I was going to remind you that I'm only looking for movies, but I'll take a 6 ep series from GAINAX any time. Thanks :D

I just finished watching The Place Promised in Our Early Days yesterday. What a beautiful, serene movie. I recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen it yet.

You might also want to check out Tokyo Godfathers. It was directed by the same guy that did Millennium Actress (which was surprisingly very good).

No wonder it says Hard Work and Guts under your name, I thought you were just some work fanatic :p

Satoshi Kon rules. I was surprised with MA as well-- glad to see he isn't just good at the Perfect Blue/Paranoia Agent stuff. Millennium Actress was a very well done movie..I need to rewatch it soon.

All Satoshi Kon fans need to watch Paprika. Now.

finished PlanetES.. definitely one of the best series i've seen. really good characters and story. the first half can be slow at times but oh does it pick up the pace. great ending too.

I have that on my list under "watched" but I'm actually watching it on my new LCD when it arrives on monday :) can't wait.
Does that start tonight?
Monday night I believe. Starts with the premiere of GitS: SAC - Solid State Society.

Ack.

I have to go out of town for business and I doubt I'll get a chance to see it. Better set my VCR.

Anyone seen the Japanese version of Shin Chan? Just curious how closely the dub (which is freaking amazing, imho) follows the original stories of the shows.

I'm curious about this too.

The stories are mostly similar, but the dialogue is changed significantly - and definitely for the better.

I wish SciFi hadn't smooshed Solid State Society down. Thoughts on it:
So...was the Major really behind it all subconsciously or was that a red herring this puppetmaster put forth to screw with her in his attempt to kill her with him?

I'm under the impression that it really was the Major's subconscious that was the Puppet Master. If solely because of the one scene where she was bringing the ampoules back to her little base full of cybernetic bodies, she passed Koshiki's cybernetic body leaving her place. Plus, it makes sense when you consider where she was at the end of 2nd Gig and everything with Kuze. She didn't willingly cause this all, but her subconscious ran wild while she let herself wander around the net solving crime. That's my take on it.

Definitely enjoyed it. I liked how it seemed to tie up some loose ends from 2nd Gig and leave it at a nice place where we could have a 3rd Gig if they wanted to.

EDIT: This has some nice information and theories on what happened in Solid State Society.
Since mentioning Death Note last week, I've watched up through episode 21. Holy crap it's awesome.
That's it, I'm watching it.

All through this thread I have not read one post denouncing it, only praising it.

I'm up through 29 now, two away from actually catching up. I have to say one thing about it though. After... a monumental shift in the show (I'm not even spoiler tagging it because I don't want to ruin it for any peekers), it seems like their grasping for the new story arc. I mean, I'm only on 29 so maybe it gets better, but right now, it seems like it was 25 episodes of pure awesome followed by a few slower, less interesting ones.

I haven't seen the anime (refuse to watch fansubs), but I am reading the manga. The last volume of which is due out next month. And I agree with you about the story not being as good once it hits that point. Granted it's still good, but it's just not as good.

Also some of Light's plans are a bit silly. I'm seriously expecting the end of the story to go something like this:

Near: "I've caught you now Kira!"
Light: "That's what you think! I just set into action a plan I came up with while I was still in the womb just in case I ever found a death note while I was in high school, and was about to lose!"

In that case, it sucks :D

No, I haven't seen it
My Hellsing Ultimate vol.2 is shipping!
So it arrived today, and have to say I'm very pleased with it. The artbook is very nice, and I think I'm going to toss it on the coffee table. It's over 200 pages, and each page has the scene from the show on one side and then the pencil drawing on the other.

Now to watch it!

So last week, I decided to order some random little toys from Play-Asia cause I was bored. So I got the Renji Kimono Plushie and one of the One Piece Unlimited Adventure Locations toys. Renji was a HELL of a lot bigger than I expected (my little Ichigo plushie can fit in his head), and surprisingly, I did decent on my One Piece toy. It was the main six of the crew (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Nico and Tony). The one I really wanted was Zoro, but I would have been happy as long as it wasn't Tony or Luffy. I ended up getting Nami who actually looks pretty damn cool. The other nice thing was it's surprisingly big too. It was only 5 bucks and it's easily as tall as my Furher one from FMA. So it was a surprisingly nice 20 bucks spent at Play-Asia. I almost wanna buy more of the One Piece toys, even though I really don't enjoy the anime that much.

Hellsing Ultimate Vol. 2 was godly. Everything I expected, especially from Jan Valentine. This show absolutely requires you to have a good setup to fully enjoy it.
In that case, it sucks :D

Oh Noez! It's bad! I'll stay away then

j/k

"Death by Konami!"

Greatest line ever.

I was just glad to see the return of some of my favorite lines from the TV series. Namely, the one about him randomly getting a hard-on.
Try Kuro-Hana for some Death Note subs, I believe they are at episode 34?
They got the C&D as well, and so did other subbers and fansites. Kuro-Hana does have a few more episodes than Animanda did, so I'll definitely get those, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see who keeps it going.

Finally finished Whistle, which was pretty good. I like that it was true to the sport and didn't infuse DBZ-like attributes to try to keep it interesting.
