Well, that interview went...surprisingly well imo. I'm supposed to find out tonight if I end up with the job or not.
Basically it's like a training apprenticeship/internship sort of thing. This guy I'd work for has clients that need techies. He finds one, trains them as they work for the client, and then after a year, the client can hire the tech, the tech can go free agent, or the guy might hire them on.
So basically I'd be working at the university doing tech stuff, but being trained in a lot of different things.
For example, part of the interview this morning was testing my server/web programming and knowledge. I don't know PHP, but the tester let me search on a PHP resource site. At the end, I'd made a small page that randomly generated a field of text based on an array. Then he had me move around on an Apache server and try to find config files that told me where pages were loaded and saved, at which point I fooled around with the HTML to make it say different things.
That's the sort of thing I'd learn, along with hardware stuff and general computer knowledge.
So here's hoping I get it. It sounds like fun, of all things. Plus the head guy interviewed me for like an hour and a half, and we talked about all sorts of things. Even Wolfenstein got into the conversation, which was fun.
