Dark Souls (Project Dark) - October 4, 2011
If I understand, where you're talking about
you'll go back there late in the game with a key.
Oh, ok. I couldn't tell if it was connected to that area or not. It's the area on the same level as the guy who gives you that life potion bottle (can't remember the name). The right side has a long staircase with a zombie; the left has a broken staircase with a corpse with loot.

Ok, I hope this isn't premature, but I'm really liking the game so far. I just defeated the first boss, and I'm exploring the next area. I think the graphics are pretty good, yet there is no install and no load times to speak of--why can't other devs make that standard?

Anyway, I'm rolling a thief. I hope it wasn't the wrong decision. I figured he had that master key (but it really hasn't helped me one bit), and it looked like he may be capable of magic later.

Do any of the characters start out with spells?

So far, so good/bad. I took the binoculars for some reason because I thought it would be helpful to see "far distances." Probably a mistake, as they don't seem to zoom too much.

I've already lost thousands of souls, but after Deomon's Souls it doesn't piss me off too much. Just sigh and keep going. I stopped when the Taurus Demon killed me last night. Am I supposed to fight him before or after fighting the large knight that's at the spot where going up leads to the Taurus Demon and going down (a short flight of steps) leads to the knight? Both killed me equally dead :)

Questions so far:

1. I saw the item to buy to leave messages, but I wasn't sure if it was limited use (i.e. buying one of that item allows you to leave/rate one message) or unlimited, so I skippped it. Can anyone comment on this?

2. Is there any way to see how many souls you need to get to the next level? I miss that from Demon's Souls. I would grind (or even use some of the soul items I've found, I've been hoarding them) if I knew how many I needed for my next level. So far I've only gone from level 1 to level 3.

3. How do the Estus flasks work? They just regenerate over time? I've been very conservative in using them and it's definitely cost me some souls. Should I use them more often?

They auto refill at bonfires. which makes them

I thought that at first, but when I die and end up back at the bonfire I don't have all 10 filled up. For example, right now I only have 7 filled.

1. 1 time purchase and you can use it forever. Just assign it to an item slot. Well worth the 100 souls

2. Go to a bonfire and choose level up, then raise a stat. It will tell you the required souls.

3. If you rekindle the bonfire(uses humanity) you will get more. This must be done at each bonfire that you want double at. Also, when online players rekindle around you, surrounding players will get more flasks. You can increase how potent the flasks are with firelink souls?(I dont remember the name) and you give them to the blind woman way back at the beginning

Cool, thanks for the info! I usually have 0 humanity, so rekindling is not an option most of the time. I did see a huge bonfire in the castle somewhere, but I couldn't figure out how to get down to it yet. I guess players must rekindle that one all the time. My current "homebase" is a little pansy fire in a room up high in the castle, before the Taurus Demon.

I did try the level up thing and it didn't seem to let me choose any stats to increase (i.e. I could hover over them but nothing happened.) I'll look again today, though.

Edit: Ok, my level up screen makes no sense. ReqSouls always says 0. Highlighting the various stats and pressing right or left or X does nothing. Highlighting Accept and pressing buttons does nothing. Honestly, wnen I first leveled up I never got to click Accept, and I had to back out using circle, though it does show me as level 3 and my HP is increased (I leveled vitality twice, up to 12). I hope I'm not glitched.
My problem with it not having pre-defined levels like Demon's Souls is that I'm a little afraid to go too far in any one direction before wanting to turn around.
Same complaint here, because I'd often miss a bonfire only to die an hour later and have to go far back. I've started using the guide to find the next bonfire because this is really poor design without having any compass or objective to go after. I wasn't even sure I was going the right way for an hour or two last night, but I kept on trucking.

At any rate, the game is simply Demon's Souls 2 and I wouldn't have it any other way. Tons to explore (much to my chagrin) and not hard at all if you simply learn from your mistakes. There have been a few cheap deaths so far that are obviously beginner's traps, but those were because I was simply trying to figure out a game mechanic. Word to the wise, knights that change stance to fencing will riposte and one-shot kill you. I lost a couple thousand souls last night because I had no idea they'd do that and this knight was the last thing standing between me and my corpse, so that was pretty weak. In the grand scheme of things, I really lost nothing because the game scales with your level anyhow.

I'll have to try out some of your tips, Jodou. Thanks for posting.

Anyway, I remembered reading that one of the devs said to not take the Master Key until your second playthrough. I was foolish enough to believe him.

I find it frustrating that the equipped weight limit seems fairly high but once you go over 50% you move like you're about 400 lbs. To me, that's how I should be moving if at or near max weight.

I need to decide whether to start over with a different class or press on with my level 17 Warrior. I appreciate challenge but almost having to consult a guide to progress turns me off a bit. They could have been a LITTLE more helpful instead of going for all out sadism.

@backlash

You aren't even able to check how many souls are required to level up unless you have enough. Stupid, I know.

BTW, has anyone had any luck downloading any of the CE stuff? I downloaded the mini guide and it took forever. Tried to download the soundtrack and it said it would take over 6 hours, connection speed was about 9 Kb/sec. I have FioS and my connection is over 7Mb (at the time I tested it, it's suppoed to go up to 15 in theory), so the throttling is on their end.

The download is only supposed to be good for 24 hours after you enter the code, but if they can't get their speeds up they better extend that. I'll be pissed otherwise.

Edit: There's also only a link for Part 1 of the soundtrack. Anyone know what's up with that?

I had the same problem where I rested at a bonfire and the flasks didn't refill. No idea why.

It says part 1 but it's the whole soundtrack. Maybe they were planning on releasing another one? Really doesn't matter what anyones connection speed is because Namco's download servers were slow to begin with and can't handle the stress. preparetodie.com was down for awhile yesterday.

Anyways, I'm glad I downloaded most of the stuff over weekend when that guy posted his redeem link on gamefaqs (someone posted it here too). Speeds were slow then with only a hundred or so people downloading. Now there's hundreds if not a few thousand downloading at once. I'm waiting until the weekend or next week to redeem my code and finish downloading the rest.
I had the same problem where I rested at a bonfire and the flasks didn't refill. No idea why.
See the post above. I think you only start with 5 refills, but that may depend on your character/stats/bonfire you are at.

More pain tonight after a workout & grub. Then off to kill the Taurus Demon.

Anyone know the level requirements for joining co-op games? I'm thinking some trophies could benefit from some co-op with a certain someone....;) Although I don't even have the effing gmae yet....fuking Worst Buy.

@Jodou

I also remembered one thing about the Thief. I chose him because he had pretty high stats compared the rest (almost chose the wanderer b/c it seemed like he had the best stats). I went with the Thief b/c he starts w/the Master Key and you are also able to choose another perk, so it's basically getting 2 perks instead of 1. Only difference is that I can't use magic right now.

Thanks for the tips; I haven't gotten to the Taurus yet, but that sword you were talking about--
is it in the area after the Raven takes you to the next area? I started going up to the Berg and looking around there, so should I backtrack to the first bonfire to find that special path, or is it someplace else?

I've been playing for 6 hours and still can't wield any of the good, "hidden" weapons I've found. I understand people's affinity for this game but I can fully sympathize with the haters as well.

The game just dumps you into this huge world with no direction and nothing to stop you from getting into battles where you are totally overmatched. That combined with From's love of hiding enemies behind corners that you can't see because of bad camera angles, one shot kills, and an awful framerate during boss battles, can be a lot more frustrating than it has to be...

I finally beat the damn Taurus Demon, but then I got stuck at
the dragon
right after it, so I'm STILL fighting the same enemies, based from the same bonfire, as when I was stuck on the Taurus Demon. Fun factor going down. I actually did it so many times my hand axe broke and I had to buy another one.

The dragon was pretty easy, there's just a little alcove on the right side of the bridge at about the half way point. It has some stairs to run down. I was able to get hit by the fire and survive.

Yeah, I made it to the alcove most times (a few times the dragon fire started inexplicably early and I got burned). I was trying to run past the dragon and get into its tunnel. I finally just went down the stairs. Not sure why I didn't do that sooner.

So far this is how I feel about the game

I saw a craiglist post for Dark Souls that read "Couldn't get past the first couple minutes, nuff said".

I loled hard.

Man those Skeletons are a pain in the ass! They also give you no souls! Only the big guys give you 500 souls. Some pretty good loot in the cemetery though
binoculars, Zweihander (huge sword), winged spear (my weapon of choice in Demon Souls), Caduceus Round Shield
.

So apparently the pendent gift ties into the story somehow in a big way, so I'll probably go with that when I start playing. Can't decide if I should stick with a cleric / pyromancer or switch to thief so I can have the master key. Guess I'll look at the starting stats too.

After you get into the tunnel and avoid the fire, there's a ladder you can kick down to get back to the last bonfire. This is also a good early place to farm souls. Activate the bonfire, climb the ladder back up, run up to the bridge so the dragon begins his pass, run back down the stairs and collect 300 souls from the enemies on the bridge. Takes like 2 minutes tops per run.

When would be a good time to attack those skeleton? After or before the Taurus Boss?

Or if you shoot the dragon's tail with a bow from underneath the bridge, it'll pass and you'll get the souls.

Also, if you shoot the dragon's tail 20-30 times, you get a sweet sword.

I'm really enjoying this game so far! I made it past like four or five bosses so far and all I'm really doing is just going to random areas getting loot and killing stuff!

Concerning the Forest near Darkroot Gardens.
Finally saved up 20k souls to get into the forest. Farming the NPCs in there like a motherfucker, went from level 18 to 52 in an hour or two. If you proceed slightly further than the NPCs you come across a catlike thing that tells you about Art-something's grave not existing. She then says not to bother looking for it and you are given a choice yes/no. I said no and she gets pissy and won't talk to me. Anyone pick yes? What does she do?

Also concerning a major boss in the sewers.
Gaping Dragon/Vagina was the most disappointing fight so far. The sewers themselves were great forcing me to take my time and introduced the idea of having to watch the ceilings for those fucking ooze monsters. After that great struggle getting past the curse frogs and pitfalls and knee-deep water, you are treated to this awesome looking boss... that uses a total of 3 moves with huge lag time between them and incredibly easy to dodge. There was literally no challenge. First time I'd been disappointed in the game so far.

Unless you Kindle a bonfire the most uses it gives you is 5. If you had previously rested at a bonfire that you have Kindled and have more than 5 swigs left, the game is nice enough to let you keep the extra swigs rather than take it down to 5.

Before and after that particular incident, I've consistently had 10. And the only time I kindled was when I was trying to figure out why I only had 6 ever since then it's always refilled back to 10.

Yeah, but it's probably a lot faster to just run up onto the bridge then run right back down to the bonfire. I'm going to try to get that sword from the dragon tonight.

I have such a love/hate relationship with this game. I get so angry when I die yet I can't stop playing.
When would be a good time to attack those skeleton? After or before the Taurus Boss?
I did it before. I'm level 14 now, but I played Demon's Souls before, so I have the techniques down pretty well. Also, I got that sword and shield Jodou was talking about. The sword does pretty good damage... Those giant skeletons are pretty tough if you don't know how to roll out of the way at just the right time.

2 minutes per run is really long. You really don't even need any armor (just shield) - just run as fast as you can up the stairs, slightly turn right and step on the main part of the bridge and run back left and down the stairs as dragon breathes fire. Continue running back down and drop to the bonfire. I get about 3k souls every 5 minutes that way. Dragon of course has to be perched where it usually is. No need for it to make a pass.

Also for those having trouble getting to the other side of the bridge where the red dragon is
First, make sure you can run (use lighter armor or no armor). Have shield and bow and arrow.

Make your way up the stairs from the middle of the bridge. Use trick stated in previous spoiler to easily kill the soldiers.

Now stand on top of stairs, shoot an arrow at dragon and quickly run around to the opposite side of stairs where you'll be covered by the wall. The dragon should be right infront of you but not breathing fire because it can't see you. Let it walk forwad a little and you should be able to run under and between it's legs to the other side as it's walking forward. Do not try to get the loot on the other side of the bridge just run straight through and get to the bonfire. When you're on the side with the bonfire, the dragon will fly away for awhile giving you time to collect the loot.

If you time everthing right you should be damage free.

I'm suddenly enjoying this game a lot more...

The Drake Sword makes a HUGE difference in the early stages of the game. Just destroyed the Bell Gargoyles and the Black Knight in the tower of the Undead Parish.

@deviousnaraku

I use the same method you described so yeah, 2 minutes was probably too long of an estimate.

Im so bad at this game lol

Chose Wanderer(no master key btw), went to Unberg, killed the Taurus demon & Metal Boar Mini Boss and I've been dying ever since. Keep getting spawned back at the bonfire before the Taurus Demon and been trying for the past 4 hours. Makes me want to break my game lol. Any tips??!?? Should I try going somewhere else? I dont even know what I'm suppose to do anymore lol

Read my spoiler like 2 post above to get to the next bonfire.

For Drake Sword
Go under the bridge where the red dragon is and shoot your bow and arrow at it's tail. When you hit the tail enough times, it'll fall off and you'll automatically receive the sword.

That bonfire where you're stuck at. Head outside and go right down the stairs, then left where the 2 spear soldiers are. There are boxes on the left side. Destroy them to reveal a stairway down. Go down and out the door. There's a merchant on the right who sells them.

I got the sword & bonfire!!!! I'm at 13 Strength I think it would pay off if I farm enough to get 16 so I can weild this bad boy and kill all those knights that have been killing me lol.

If you've killed the Taurus demon your next goal is to make it past
the bridge guarded by the red drake
and into the undead parish.
You said you've fought the boar miniboss. Just after that miniboss is a hole in the wall at the end of that corridor (below where the archers snipe your ass from that little bridge, its on the right). You'll find a key and some ladders to climb to make it into the parish proper. Once in the undead parish your ultimate goal is to ring the bell of awakening and fight some gargoyles.
In general, it is a good idea to try and cut the tails/body parts off of any boss monsters before defeating them. You never know what they might drop...

And yes, its worth it. Drake sword is ridiculously good.

There is an item required to access the forest that costs 20k souls and is purchased from the blacksmith near the undead parish church.
I'm going to leave part of this unspoilered so people know that eventually they will need to blow 20k souls on an item to progress into an area. As soon as I knew, I chose to get it out of the way right away since 20k souls is hard/tedious to obtain early on if you spend all your souls you get from the bosses on leveling/items.

As for how far I am.
Burg->Parish->Burg 2->Sewers->Depths/Blighttown I have just beaten the vagina dragon and I'm currently on the depths but am taking a break from the "real" mission to go explore. So I'm in the forest powerleveling on the NPCs there. You can access the forest any time you have 20k souls and have made it to the undead parish. Just buy the crest from the blacksmith there and roll/run past the headless metal guardian mini boss and follow the path into darkroot gardens. Theres a door if you follow the path with a glowing orb in the center. You have to place that 20k item into the door to open it. Thats where I am.

Thanks for the clarification. Man I wish I had known that earlier. I would have used my humanity to kindle the bonfire in the undead burg since I've been starting from there for the last several hours. Especially since I always end up just losing my humanity pretty quickly anyway. Next time I get some humanity I'm kindling that bad boy asap.

I actually did it as soon as I got to that part of the game. However, after I killed the first two and they didn't give me any souls, I decided to explore elsewhere so I never found the items deeper in the cemetary. Now I'm in the undead parish...is it worth walking all the way back to the cemetary for those items before I go any further?

Ok, that is awesome, according to the wiki there is a whip as an equip-able weapon at some point in the game.

Went ahead and went with a thief (back stabs and parry for the win) and the pendent to have the master key, not sure what exactly I have been able to open that I wouldn't have otherwise so far.
It will tell you when you open something that required the key, not that it matters for you lol
Ya, it just got annoying in the tutorial that I kept running into locked doors (particularly that door to the right of the boss fog gate) and I was like "master key my ass..."
