Dead Rising 2 - Gen. Discussion & Info - Out now!

Restarted Dead Rising a week ago and played the shit out of it until I beat it over the weekend, along with finishing up Gears of War 2 and my second run through of Fable 2. I loved all of it, and I can't wait until the sequel. I will probably just rent it though since I don't think a casino will be nearly as interesting of a setting as the mall. The ending was badass but has me a little confused:

Someone earlier posted that Frank dies, but he doesn't, right? He's still alive, but he has the zombie virus and there are 50 children with it, too, which is how I suppose Dead Rising 2 will start out.

And how the fuck did a zombe get in the helicopter? It was an awesome way for the 72 hour mode to end, but it made no sense to me. Overtime mode was awesome, but i died 5 times or so before finally beating brock, and it was a pain in the ass to have to fight the tank over and over.

I thought a big thing wrong with the game was the lack of checkpoints. I don't mind getting killed by a psychopath, but having to walk across the entire mall to try again was a pain. The save system didn't bother me too much, but I'm sure it will be drastically changed in the sequel. The survivor AI was pretty shitty, but giving them weapons helped a lot. And I thought guns were useless when compared to melee weapons such as the mini chainsaw which I used a lot. The next game is definitely one of my most anticipated games of this year to play, and Dead Rising is one of my favorite 360 games now.

Haha, and got raped at a zombie infested mall. I always thought it was weird that when you were captured by SWAT or that crazy ass photo guy(if you didnt show at the right time) You would be stripped to your underwear. I mean that is pretty gay, and the photo guy even chained you by your neck, CREEPY

I bet moving on from Frank is probably for the best, even though I would prefer to have him back. Logistically, it would suck to 'reset' Frank's skills to zero for a sequel 'Metroid-style' after becoming a badass in the first game. It would have been cool if DR2 could see your DR1 game save and import your stats, but just going with someone new is probably easier for the devs.

I loved the original but I HATE being timed on missions so I would always get overwhelmed and fail a story mission or something. I hope they don't time it this time.

I think they mention somewhere that it's on a similar 72 hour structure as the first game. Really hope they didn't bring back Otis or someone like him.

First a hampster ball and now a moose helmet and chainsaw staff. If I had money I would pre-order in a heartbeat.
O man that was bad ass. Not sure which was cooler the moose head or chainsaw bike.
Neither. The correct answer is the two chainsaws on a stick (similar to a dual lightsaber).

I absolutely hate this misconception. There are 6 different endings. Only ONE of them requires you to finish all the missions.

I hope the timed missions remain. It adds to the urgency and challenge. The single save file on the other hand needs to go.

So even if I miss a story (or all of them) I won't be forced to start over? I had this game for a little while and just felt too rushed to complete everything in time. If I don't have to worry about the story missions though I might have to pick this up again.

Correct. There are a handful of Story endings, with the best one being the "complete all story missions" ending. It's been awhile since I played, but I don't remember this being all that difficult. Especially if you choose to ignore what Psycopaths/Survivors you can.

Part of that rushed feeling comes from being a low level. The game definitely had a weird setup, but once you leveled Frank up a bit and got more moves, larger health bar, and just learned the ins and outs of the game it became much easier. There is a TON of time to complete just the basic story. You should only feel rushed if trying for the Saint Achievement which is basically complete the game perfectly.

Right. I don't think this game was intended to be finished on a first play through. Play as far as you can and you keep your experience when you start over. Then go through and focus on finishing the main story mode.

This posts sums things up nicely.

Alright, getting my 360 pro in 2 days and I also ordered the first DR. It seems that much of the frustration with the game came with preconceived notions of what the game should be...(sandbox title w/zombies amiwrong).

I've never even watched a friend play this but I think I will love it. This is sort of an abstract question but what sort of mindset/approach should I take to Dead Rising to enjoy it the most?
Thanks.

Save frequently, and save often, for there is no Auto-save. You can only have one save file, but you can start a new game with your previous stats. There's nothing wrong with starting and restarting a couple times in the beginning to beef up your levels a bit.

You're gonna meet a guy named Otis, who you'll learn to loathe. Know that you don't have to do every mission he sends you on. Just doing the story line missions is all you need to get the best ending.

Also, there is a survivor mode you unlock that is essentially a sandbox mode. No plot, no dialog, just you, trapped in the mall, with zombies, trying to live for as long as you can. To make matters worse, your health continuously decreases, so you need a frequent intake of food to survive. Unfortunately, in the survivor mode, food doesn't respawn.

Is there a record for how long someone has lasted in survivor mode?

I finally got my Xbox 360 (forgive me Mr. Miyagi) and I am happy to say that Dead Rising was my first game beaten. I completed the cases and went and finished overtime mode. It's strange but I think the first game is best enjoyed with a guide simply because the mission structuring is so demanding and it's difficult to determine when you have "free time" for survivors and what not. I loved the 3rd person gameplay involving fleeing/dodging/defeating the zombie hordes. I'm not a fan of how many bullets real people take before dying.

Definitely looking forward to this sequel.

I did the same thing, but didn't feel a need for a guide at all. I mean, there's a big meter telling you how long you have til the case disappears.

For me, the hype is kind of dead for this game. There was just too long a period of nothing being shown or talk to keep interest in it.

It makes me wonder if it somehow works into the storyline. A lot of Zombie movies have scenes with caged zombies being used for gladiator style entertainment. I could see the Vegas like setting having something like that and possibly something going wrong and causing the outbreak. Pure speculation on my part but it would be a nice tie in.

Gamespot has an interview with some Capcom guys, or the developer, and the biggest surprise weapon is .. wait for it.... a pink vibrator.

!?? why, so players could perform sodomy on zombies? [beastiality achievement anyone?]

GTA San Andreas already did the purple dildo thing.

weapon combos are nice touches. anyone know the latest release date? it's been moved around so many times.

how'bout the case zero dlc release date as well?

I just read that this game will have two player co-op on Destructoid. Sounds like a win to me.

Breathe deep and call a pal... it’s zombie hunting time. Yes, in addition to the already revealed competitive multiplayer, Dead Rising 2 will feature full two-player cooperative play through the game’s entire main story.

Here are the basics, and it’s pretty straight forward: During any time, a second player can be invited to join a game in progress. Each player will control the game’s main protagonist, Chuck Greene, and any kind of continuity or logic gets thrown out the window in lieu of pure fun. The story doesn’t change, as the missions and game layout will remain identical whether you’re playing alone or with a friend. But make no mistake about it -- killing zombies and saving survivors with a buddy is a hell of a lot more fun (and safer) when you do it with a friend.

The name of the game here with Dead Rising 2 co-op has less to do with making any sense from a narrative standpoint, and more to do with all of the crazy sh*t you could only do with a second Chuck Greene at your side. According to Blue Castle, all kinds of new gameplay emerges when two players are thrown into the Dead Rising 2 sandbox, and this was very easily proven during a short hands-off demo, and later when I got my hands on the controller.

An example had one Chuck using a fire extinguisher to freeze zombies; once frozen, a second player could drop kick or hit the frozen ghoul with a bat to shatter it to pieces. In another example, we saw some strategy as one player collected items and weapons, while another spent time fighting off the hordes.

It also seemed as if Blue Castle had added many game moments and interactive environmental objects that simply screamed co-op. While playing the game alone, I struggled to fight off two homicidal twin Vegas showgirls; with a second player having my back, sending them to their grave was not only easier, but a lot more enjoyable. A giant interactive video poker machine in the middle of a casino was nearly unusable alone -- I kept getting hassled by flesh-hungry zombies while trying to win big. With a second player, I was able to focus on my gambling addiction without the worries of a creature gnawing on my face.

From what I could tell, the cooperative mode was not really limited in any real way. Yes, the entire game can be played with a second player who can drop in and drop out at any time, with the host “owning” the game. This means that whoever starts the game will be the owner of the save file and the story; the second player can participate and advance, but once he or she leaves, their earnings will only be in the form of in-game money and any PP (experience) points earned.

Players aren’t tethered to one another within areas, with one caveat -- certain story elements (like those beyond doors) cannot be triggered unless both players are within a certain distance. Before the aforementioned Vegas showgirl battle could begin, I had to wait patiently for my partner to get bored using a vacuum/saw blade combo elsewhere in the casino before I could move forward. As you can imagine, that could take awhile. Because honestly, when does anyone really get bored using a vacuum/saw blade combo?

Cooperative play was the big Dead Rising 2 reveal at Captivate, but producer Keiji Inafune says there are “more scoops” yet to be revealed. Unfortunately, he tells us, “press restrictions” are keeping him from spilling the beans. Damn you, “press restrictions” -- how about a date with my vacuum/saw blade combo?

Dead Rising 2 hits shelves on August 31; expect more “scoops” to come out of E3.

Looks awesome. The cutscenes looks very much like a Dead Rising game, so it's cool they kept the style of the first game.
nice, that's great news.

what's up with the Uma bride kill bill outfit?
you mean bruce lee's game of death outfit

Invited..... Jesus Christ, doesn't anyone have real life friends that play next to each other anymore? Seriously, is splitscreen that bad? I can't imagine that anyone is saying "What, splitscreen? fuck that, I play in 16:9 ONLY!"
