Demon's Souls - Atlus & From Software's Action RPG - October 6

Wow, I stayed up until 4 AM playing this. So far, I have beaten the Phalanx, Tower Knight, 4-1 boss and the 2-1 boss. I have a soul level of 45 and am trying to pimp out my thief into more of a ninja/assassin.
*snip* Also these bastages who leave misleading signs can go to hell. I puzzled over one for a long time thinking it was trying to tell me how to get down to a set of souls for some nice XP. I kept trying to drop down but dieing thinking I was landing long. *snip*
Therein lies the importance of messages and voting. If a message doesn't get any or many votes, it'll disappear decently fast. You can also lay a message telling others to beware of a false message ahead. Always fun.

I do have one thing I think this game should embrace (especially if they do a sequel): Have some way to sell weapons for souls, even if they aren't much. Right now I have like, 4 White Bows, 3 Storm Rulers, and a few other weapons that I will NEVER use. On the one hand, Stockpiler Thomas is undoubtedly happy, but I've got all this crap I don't need and can't do anything with.

Also, please no more worlds like the Valley of Defilement (World 5) :bomb: You get crap in terms of souls from the enemies there, and it takes SO LONG to traverse 5-2, plus those fucking plague babies are the devil's spawn. I love every other world (well, Latria can be long and a bit arduous, but still fun) except this one. I always save it for last because it's just not that fun for me. I will also kill the man who thought to put the Crystal Gecko in 4-2 on the ledge by the Black Samurai Skeleton. I can't get a Pure Darkmoonstone to save my life (last thing I need for a +5 Crescent).
I got started a little while ago. The game is great but wow is it hard. I lost well over 3k XP due to a little slip up when the phone rang and I tried to pick it up while walking some planks in 5-1. Then yesterday I played while I was a little sleepy and walked off the edge of another place. It reminds me of an MMO in that you cant pause it and you have to hide your body while you go take a piss or what not. Also these bastages who leave misleading signs can go to hell. I puzzled over one for a long time thinking it was trying to tell me how to get down to a set of souls for some nice XP. I kept trying to drop down but dieing thinking I was landing long.
Only 3K? Wait till you lose 100K my friend ;). As for the hiding thing, well, I've never played an MMO but I think it is different in one respect - you can simply clear the enemies out of a small area and then sit there with no problem so it isn't quite as bad as it seems. That is assuming you aren't playing in body form and getting invaded of course. But I never play in body form so I don't worry about it.
I will also kill the man who thought to put the Crystal Gecko in 4-2 on the ledge by the Black Samurai Skeleton. I can't get a Pure Darkmoonstone to save my life (last thing I need for a +5 Crescent).
Don't the geckos at the end of world 4 (the ones out past the 4-4 archstone) drop those like candy? It seems like I got 3 or 4 from them. I kept getting them while I was trying to get something else (the ones for the shield). The clearstone is the impossible one and thankfully a CAG let me borrow their clearstone weapon.

I finally got back into this again last night. I finsihed off my second playthrough (the arrow trick on the false king worked like a charm by the way), blew through 1-1, and then did all of world 2 (thank god for the shortcut past all the lava worms in 2-2 - though I suppose I still have to back there to get Patches). Hopefully I can get through world 3 again tonight, then free Yuria so I can finish off my spells. Then I just have to figure out which weapons I need and hopefully meet up with Saint Noir to get the two that would require a fourth playthrough. I love the game but with 130 hours into it already I'm growing weary of it. The 3-4 week break I took helped a bit as it was fun to get back into it (though I had already forgotten how to do some stuff!).

Hopefully there's some DLC on the way or news of a sequel!

I have no idea what level you are at, but if you can't get one and need one, I have a few spares I think.

io, just tell me when you are ready and we can meet up.

Yeah, they have a chance to as well. I was reading the DS wiki, and it had a qualifier by the ones in 4-3 (7+ luck, which I have, and a LSS, which I don't have) but 4-2 was by itself. I think I've already maxed out the gecko spawns on the 4-2 ledge, so I'll have to give 4-3 another shot. I also spend a lot of time in 4-2, since Thirst + Ring of Avarice give me something like 32k souls in about a minute and a half from the first Reaper and Black Samurai Skeleton, so I have much more experience with that damn gecko.

@Saint: Thanks for the offer, though I'm betting you're a bit over my head currently. I'm only SL 138 right now (hooray I'm almost 20% :p), but I'm gonna try to see if I can get it myself. While I'm not opposed to a handout, in every game (or DEFINITELY in MMOs) I try to earn pretty much everything myself. Some stupid combination of pride, stubborness, and OCD must fuel that desire.

No worries. I think I stopped at about 150, so you aren't really out of range. If you change your mind, just let me know. That one isn't too bad as the end of 4-3 has 2 chances per go. Just don't go out to them until after you've killed everything around (including boss) and make sure to use Large Sword of Searching if you have it.

Can't believe this thread is still alive. Not that I'm complaining!

My backlog is so huge there is no way I could be able to go through this game again. If I did though I'd go mage. Still gotta finish up Dragon Age, START Assassins Creed 2, and finish up Uncharted 1 & 2, and UT3. Jesus.

Took down the fat man and the tower knight. Also killed two sparkling lizards. Today was good day for the forces of good. Unfortunately I was also invaded for the first time and was bashed to ground. I caught something I didn't know how to get rid of. Would have died anyway since I wasn't doing all that much damage.

I have barely touched into this game... Been addicted to the PSP. MONSTER HUNTER IS EATING MY SOUL!

I'll have to delve deeper into this game. It seems like a cool game though.

Just got this for Xmas and so far I love it, though I haven't gotten too far. I tried several times last night to kill Miralda but I just wasn't able to. Maybe I'm not strong enough (Soul Level 18 I think?) but now the pure white WT is over so I guess I missed my chance. How often does the WT go to pure white or pure black when there's not a specific server event?

I also read the wiki a bit and realized I must have let Ostrava die, though I never saw him. Maybe he suicided or some fire killed him before I could do anything. I see why people seem to NG+ on this more than other RPGs - there's so much to do (and miss!)

You pretty much determine your own World Tendency. Check out the wiki's section on World Tendency, specifically the 'How do I change it?' portion. Really seems like you'll need quite a few Stones of Ephemeral Eyes if you want Pure Black. I'm hoping they keep doing events like these throughout the next year, as they're pretty useful, and give me a lot of incentive to keep coming back.

And Ostrava really isn't that important. If you got the Mausoleum Key from wherever he died, then you're fine. He does give you a few items if you keep him alive throughout the world, but nothing urgent enough in your first playthrough.

Oh, I thought you determined your own character tendency but that World Tendency was somehow affected by other players to some degree. Good to know.

Also, I didn't get the Mausoleum Key since I never saw Ostrava. From what I read, if he dies you can only get the key on your next visit to 1-1, and if you go back to the Nexus without it, it's gone forever. Oh, well. I can't even seem to find where he used to be, actually (somewhere in the lefthand staircase, it seems?).

If you never saw him, he's still alive. In 1-1, he's standing on like a gallows surrounded by enemies.

Hmm, does he still show up after I beat Phalanx? Maybe he didn't die but I missed my chance to save him. Anyway, I'd still like to get the Thief's Ring if that's there - where is this gallows thing?

He shows up in the entire World 1 areas so long as you save him in World 1-1 through 1-3. If you don't save him in 1-1, then he will not show up for the others. As for the gallows, at the top of the keep where you face the blue-eyed knight, go through the fog, and head down stairs. You should see him on the north eastern area that is a bit below you, just jump over the low castle wall to get to him. If you want to make sure he doesn't die, just follow him until the paths he walks are entirely clear of enemies. Only then, he will be truly safe for that area.

~Hilarious invasion moment on 3-2. I got bored playing offline so I summoned a blue phantom to coop with me through the tower areas. This guy had almost the same build as me so we talked for a bit through PM. I then received a message that my game was being invaded (seriously, who invades on 3-2? lol) so the blue phantom and I rushed to the BP spawn point. We knew he was coming for us so we both equipped thief and grave robber rings and waited for him underneath the walkway where he had to jump off. As soon as he did came down from the fall, we both blasted him with dual Firestorms and we laughed as his charred body fell to the abyss.

Ah, I was looking in entirely the wrong place. Thanks for the help guys!

Edit: Found him and rescued him in 1-1. Although after he thanked me he wandered out of the courtyard and down the hall while I was busy looting the bodies. By the time I caught up to him it looked like he was fighting some knights and I was afraid they were going to kill him, so I jumped into the fight and instead I died. Then I really thought he died, but I found him again in 1-2 and rescued him there, so I guess he was ok.

Interestingly, in 1-2 I followed him down the hall (inside the wall where you find him). He went up the stairs and I followed him. He went up to the top of that first tower (where there's some sort of knight and the two crossbowmen). I fought next to him against the knight, and then we each killed a crossbowman. However, when I turned around, he had disappeared. I suppose I'll find him again in 1-3.

That is pretty good....the last guy who invaded me was while I was doing (dying) 4-1 on NG+. The thing is, I completely forgot about to equip (weapons/armor) for being invaded...but was smart enough to have banishment as my miracle. Grave robber ring and banishment and poof. Actually I missed it twice, but ran back to the jail cell and waited. You would have thought he knew what I was doing after that since NOTHING went off at him and his meat cleaver. I can probably still hear him cursing now.

Just beat the game today. I made it to about soul level 95 when I finished. I summoned Phantoms quite often for bosses, but the levels were plenty challenging. I honestly don't think I'll do a NG+, but who knows.

I got invaded for the first time last night. I had just beat the Tower Knight and was happy to get my body back. So I went to 2-1 and bam, got a message I was being invaded. Honestly I was a litle surprised since I'm not far into the game at all (only SL 20 I think) and my impression was that this is something generally for higher level characters. Some people just like PvP I guess.

Anyway, I can say that it made me more nervous/on edge than anything so far in the game. My heart bpm probably doubled :) He ended up killing me cause I wasn't sure exactly what to do (as far as where to wait, how to attack, etc). I actually did get him down to almost dead but he managed to heal himself and just had better melee equipment and stats I think (my character is more of a mage, though my only spells so far are Soul Arrow and the basic Fire spell). So I ended up dying. Ah, well.

Is there any way to check your online rating? I had my first experiences as a blue phantom last night. The first time, I accidentally fell off the elevator to my death very quickly after being summoned; did the summoner still get to rate me? (I hope not, as he probably would have given me an F). The second time I managed to help the summoner beat the boss, and I was wondering what rating he gave me.

Edit: Sorry about all the questions. As you can probably tell, I am excited about this game in a way that I haven't been by other games in a very long time. I'm trying to only ask questions here that I couldn't find the answer to on the wiki.

You only get rated if you help the host beat the boss and survive at the end as far as I know. If you want to check your rating, while in soul form, use this item called blue eye stone. It allows body form players to summon you, but you can also press "x" on the marker it leaves to check your online stats.

I'm not sure where the threshold is for dying. I know that is supposed to be the case, but in my NG+, the BP I summoned died a shot or two before I killed off Adjudicator with my bow and I still got to rate him - which I gave him S since he did the physical damage there.

You can rate people even if they die seconds after being summoned. You hit select and go to "rate player". It only forces you to rate someone if they help you beat the boss.

I wonder if their next step is to use some of those souls to level up some stats. 125 MP? It's obviously a melee character (what with 268 item weight and 100-something equip weight) but beef it up a little! Soul Thirst = ultimate level ups.

Also, since I can't read Japanese, I wonder if that includes Beast's Souls. 99 Beast's Demon Souls = 19.8 MILLION souls

Once you reach soul 185 - you can pretty much take down bosses in 1-4 hits. This is assuming you allocated your stats correctly and at least achieved half of the max upgraded level for your valuable weapon.
Jodou - couldn't he have used the duping trick to get all those? Or does that not work with souls?
Sadly, demon's souls are not able to be dropped and thus unable to be duped. So no, they legitimately beat the game 99+ times.
21.5 hours in and I still haven't touched World 3 or 5.

That's funny, I just did world 3-1 after doing 2-1 (haven't touched 2-2 or 4 at all yet). I love how it doesn't force any order on you, and going back to previously "beaten" worlds yields new paths/enemies/etc.

Best weapon and shield for female Royal?

Played a lot today and got loads of souls but no clue what to spend them on. I have been doing a lot of phantom stuff where I go help people beat lvls and bosses and kill other ppl who invade. Most fun I have had with this game. I had a few people come into my game and help with two of the boss fights I was in. Loads of fun.

Something that boosts magic such as the kris knife or phosphorescent pole, or a weapon that's been upgraded with darkmoonstone (starts with "crescent"). The dark silver shield is really good.

I'm a Royal myself, and echo what ChibiJosh said about the Crescent weapon/Phosphorescent Pole. I carry three shields (fully upgraded Adjudicator, Dark Silver Shield for magic enemies, and Dark Purple Flame Shield for fire enemies) and a +5 Crescent Kilij/Phosphorescent Pole.

As far as stats, you probably want to look at heavy Magic investment. With a Crescent weapon, your attack scales with your Magic stat, so the more magic you have, the stronger your spells AND weapon become. I put enough into Will for the 6 spell slots, and put a ton into Magic for the boosted attack.

Luckily you can earn quite a few souls as a female as well. Silver Bracelet + Ring of Avarice + casting Soul Thirst = heck of a lot of souls.

I also want to state that Marrowstones are the most evil item in Demon's Souls. Not only do they force me to World 5 which I hate anyway, but they force me into 5-2, my most hated level in the damn game.

Bah, I don't get Ship on that one. He is a way more experienced gamer than me - or at least I figure he is better at twitch gaming than me given that he is way younger and plays all the time. And yet I had little trouble with Demon's Souls. I never even used blue phantoms to get through the bosses either. If I can do it, anyone can. Sure, there were some challenging spots and I needed to go online to get some tips at certain places, but there is always a relatively easy way to get through things. Nearly all the bosses have a way to cheese them if you want to go that route (I can't believe how easy the false king is with the arrow trick).

Thank you for saying that, cause it gives me inspiration! I just bought this game today, its my first purchase of 2010! I'm not going to jump right into yet...gonna go through some other games, then I'm coming for this bad boy... but at least I know that there hope that I may be able to to finish it....

Why would you need a restart?

io is right and its probably the fact that he twitch games... this is not a run and gun.

To say that this game is challenging would be an understatement. I bought it on a recomendation from someone who hates RPG's and I am hoping that I can get through world one this week lol. I have died about 8 times today and gave up to play some fat princess. I am going to check out the walkthrough to see about the different classes as I just went into it blindly.

I got summoned as a blue phantom to help someone with that. Right before the match, I ask the host not to attack at all and let me handle it. What happens? During the middle of our bout, the host fired an arrow at him which got King's attention. Then False King rushed him and took him out in one hit. Told him =|

Thanks Chibi and Nirron.

So you think Avarice is worth it? 50k seems high unless you think I will earn it back easy with? I wish I had another ring slot. Chicks got 10 fingers I mean come on!

This game is great! Played 9h today alone. Was trying out the whole blue stone thing while finishing some lvls and I got summoned by this CPU monk to be a bad guy. What a trip because I was trying to help someone with a boss fight. So I got 34k souls I think I am going to loss if I dont win this fight. I had no idea what was going on since I didnt read about this online or in a book. When it happened I thought I picked the black stone by accident. Then this guy comes in the room and I can tell he is a human player and he is wanting to fight me. With the little monk story it gave I get the idea and start freaking cus I didnt want any part of this and didnt want to loss my souls or have my world tendency to turn black.

Anyway the guy was tough and we fought for like 20min with each giving a little and digging deep into health regen stuff. I ended up beating him but it was a happy sad time since I didnt want too. I think all I won is this freaky hat that makes me think of the movie The Cell. I had many more great online experiences with this game today. Including accidentally going to this fire boss by falling down this whole and then summoning a high lvl character and having him thrash this guy with ease netting me like 25k souls. Awesome.

I will look up the items you told me about. Do you think I should give that demon soul to Ed the black smith so he will do something for me? I am wondering if I should maybe be using these souls instead of trading them. I got to find out if I have the right stuff for my character at her current lvl. Trying to go full magic.

You can find one for free somewhere. Check the wiki (google "Demon's souls wiki" if you don't know about it).

Never ever use a demon soul.

This website (the site Chibi mentioned) is a bastion of knowledge about any and all things Demon's Souls related.

You also can get pretty much any vendor weapon/ring in the game for free somewhere (Ring of Avarice is in 3-2). Kudos on getting the Monk hat; it's great for spellcasters. I've been trying to get one, but I'm horrible at PvP, and most people around my SL (high 180's at the moment) end up either destroying me or barely beating me (If anyone wants to trade off wins/losses to try and get the hat let me know :p)

One last thing: The beauty of a blue phantom is that you never need to worry about losing souls. If you die as a blue phantom, that's all that happens. You'll go back to your world without any gain or loss. It doesn't penalize you for dying in the host's world, which does seem odd, since it penalizes you everywhere else.

As for the Demon's Souls, like Chibi said, DO NOT use them now, though you can in the future. Those special boss souls are the currency you use to buy more advanced miracles and spells. If you want to see what a specific soul is used for, go to the wiki and look under your specific area. You could go here where there is a master list of the bosses and their respective Demon's Souls, though the only spoiler would be the names of the bosses in certain zones. They can also be used to obtain certain unique weapons (look under the Upgraded section), some of which are pretty darn good for specific uses (Large Sword of Searching raises drop rates, Lava Bow is great at the start before you get your Dex > 30 or fully upgrade the White Bow)

Not really much of a loss for your first time through if the only one you used was the one from that first gooey boss, Phalanx. It can be used for a good PvP spear (takes away durability per hit) but it's not amazing unless you plan on PvPing extensively. I do recommend two or three spells/miracles though: Firestorm, Soul Ray, and Second Chance. Those three spells helped me destroy bosses and enemies in my first playthrough as well as NG+. I'm sure someone in here probably knows of a better combo, but that's what worked for me. Soul Thirst is also an amazing spell for farming souls (particularly the first Reaper of 4-2). That, the Ring of Avarice, and the Silver Bracelet can net you 80% more souls, though the spell can only really be used in a few spots as it has an insane MP cost.

I have like 5 of those Monk hats. The thing to do is just keep trying to get summoned as the monk and eventually the player will die on the way to you and you'll get the hat without even trying.

Skip the white bow and just go for the Viscous Compound Long Bow. :)

That's what I did. Works great. Now, if I could just find a pure bladestone, and get my character tendency to pure white for the friend ring, I'd have this platted, and could finally move on to my backlog.
