Demon's Souls - Atlus & From Software's Action RPG - October 6
Not really much of a loss for your first time through if the only one you used was the one from that first gooey boss, Phalanx. It can be used for a good PvP spear (takes away durability per hit) but it's not amazing unless you plan on PvPing extensively. I do recommend two or three spells/miracles though: Firestorm, Soul Ray, and Second Chance. Those three spells helped me destroy bosses and enemies in my first playthrough as well as NG+. I'm sure someone in here probably knows of a better combo, but that's what worked for me. Soul Thirst is also an amazing spell for farming souls (particularly the first Reaper of 4-2). That, the Ring of Avarice, and the Silver Bracelet can net you 80% more souls, though the spell can only really be used in a few spots as it has an insane MP cost.
Thanks again. I got the first two so far and am going back in to get the rest right now. Seems I got to kill me some Geckos which I have not been able to do yet.
Thanks Chibi and Nirron.

This game is great! Played 9h today alone. Was trying out the whole blue stone thing while finishing some lvls and I got summoned by this CPU monk to be a bad guy. What a trip because I was trying to help someone with a boss fight. So I got 34k souls I think I am going to loss if I dont win this fight. I had no idea what was going on since I didnt read about this online or in a book. When it happened I thought I picked the black stone by accident. Then this guy comes in the room and I can tell he is a human player and he is wanting to fight me. With the little monk story it gave I get the idea and start freaking cus I didnt want any part of this and didnt want to loss my souls or have my world tendency to turn black.
Same thing happened to me - I put down my blue soul mark so I could get a free sneak peak at the boss of 3-1. I got summoned by the monk. Anyway, after the cut scene I was just kind of wondering around his room exploring, and then I suddenly got a message that "so-and-so" (forget the name) had died and my objective was complete. Guess he fell off a cliff or something? I didn't realize the monk's hat was hard to get; I guess I got lucky.

I fought my way down to Flamelurker last night and left 14,000 souls in his room when he backed me into a corner and I couldn't escape :( Not too many for vets, but it's a pretty good number to lose when you're only SL 32. I'll try and get back down there without dying and see if I can reclaim them today.

On another note, I have a question about shields. I notice that many of them have a strength requirement that I can't meet since I'm a royal and I've been putting most of my points into Magic and Intelligence. However, the penalty only seems to affect attack power, which I don't really care about since it's a shield right? (Unless I use L2 a lot, I guess, which I don't?). Is there any reason not to use something like the Large Purple Flame Shield? Will I see any penalties?

From the Wiki page: "For shields, not meeting the requirement will result in a larger stamina impact when blocking, and the shield bash damage can be affected" (It was buried in the Items/Equipment page, dunno how I found it :p)

I'm not sure how severe the larger impact is compared to the lesser, but knowing Demon's Souls it's probably rather large. If you can't get the stats soon, but need the FireRes of the Purple Flame Shield, you might want to try the Heater Shield for the times when you need it (against Ministers and what not)

Ah, thanks. I really want it mainly for Flamelurker, so the penalty is probably not any worse than having a lighter shield with no special fire resistance. Too bad the equip screen doesn't show you the penalty for stamina like it does for physical attack - that seems like a big oversight on From's part.

Where can I find the strength and other requirements of these weapons and shields and such?

God this game has an awesome online/MMO feel. I had to go farm health leafs in 1-1 for a while today before going to farm items and XP in 4-1 while helping others as a blue guy. The idea of dropping hints and such on the ground for others to read is great. I have seen so many helpful tips and left a few myself.

When you hit square on every weapon to bring up its stats, there's a row called ReqXP that lists numbers next to a bunch of icons. Those icons and numbers correlate to how much of something you need. You may have to go talk to the Maiden in Black to figure out which icon is which stat (I know I have :p)
Any tips on the Maneater Boss?
Kill the first one by shooting arrows through the fog, then go in, run straight to the fire in the middle of the bridge, and use that as a shield for your battle with the 2nd.

If anyone would be willing to help me with the last few trophies I need, I would greatly appreciate it, and would be happy to 'gameshare' my demon's souls dynamic theme with them.

I just need to hold a friend ring, hold a +5 sharp weapon or get a pure bladestone, and hold a +5 mercury weapon or get 3 chunks of mercury.

I don't really expect anyone to help me, and I'm fine if they don't, as I know I'll eventually find what I need, but it's just starting to drag for me, since I started farming pure bladestone at SL 130-140, and I'm now around SL 204.

I love this game and finally had some time to play it last night. I just opened up the gate to Phalanx and blew 2000 souls on the heater shield only to realize I don't meet the strength requirements (I'm a Royal). I also figured out how to use Soul Arrow (I wasn't locking onto the target beforehand) which has made a big difference. It has been difficult at times but I think that reading A LOT about the game beforehand prepared me to take it super slow.

Tried the arrow trick and it was like 19 hp per arrow so that took a while (and 130 heavy arrows lol). Thanks:D

I would help you out, but at this point you have surpassed my SL a great deal. I think you are out of range.

Oh man, for that sweet theme I would in a heartbeat but I'm SL 712. :(
There's a Demon's Souls dynamic theme?
Check youtube. I posted it in this thread many months ago as well. Your homepage becomes the Nexus basically.

I could help you out with the Mercury weapon, though I'm currently plowing my way to PWCT for the Friend ring and have yet to get a Pure Bladestone either. I'm SL 189, so we're definitely in range of one another. While I'm unsure whether or not I have the 3 chunks, I definitely have the +5 mercury weapon.

I'm still lacking the Bladestone, Marrowstone, Spiderstone, and Cloudstone stuff myself, though I'm literally 6 spiderstone shards and 1 cloudstone chunk away from maxing out the latter two.

Later on, like on subsequent playthroughs, you can use the rat's ring and morion blade to greatly increase your damage.
The last time I fought maneater I think it took me 4 heavy arrows to kill the first one.
Yeah its in the japanese store.
It doesn't even show her sitting on the stairs next to the portal. That was my favorite!

If you let me hold your mercury weapon, of have 3 chunks of mercury, I'll give you all my marrowstone, spiderstone, and cloudstone, or let you hold those weapons/shield. :)

EDIT: Oh, on my japanese account, I also have the White Knight Chronicles Dynamic Theme, and Langrisser 1 & 2 from psone classics, to sweeten the deal, if anyone has the friend ring or sharp weapon/bladestone, as those are the two that are a pain in the keister.

Just checked and I have 4 Chunks of Mercurystone, so I can either give you those or let you hold the weapon, whichever you'd prefer. I'd welcome any spare Marrowstone you have, as I've done the math, and I need...well, way too much (6 Shards and 6 Chunks).

And I feel you on the Bladestone. I cleared out World 4 and then turned it Pure Black...just wow. I think I'll get a few more soul levels before attempting much of that. My luck is fairly low (11 :p) so I might not have done great with drops anyway, even with a LSS equipped.

I'm about to call bunk on luck. My luck is above 50, with LSS as well, and it helps for everything...except bladestones.

Off the top of my head I have like 70 shards of bladestone, 40 chunks, and 0 pure.

For Marrow I have 5 pure, about 30 shards, and I used all my chunks this morning. I'll let you hold the +5 fatal dagger, if you prefer, though. I should have enough cloudstone and spiderstone to just give you so you can make the weapons, or you can hold those too. Up to you.

Just let me know when you get a few more levels (I think we need to be within 10 of each other) and let me know when's a good time for you, and we can meet up in 2-1 next to the blacksmith or something.

You should be increasing your strength stat first as a Royal. You will want to use the purple flame shield (and maybe the winged spear) soon and that has even higher requirements. So buying that shield wasn't a bad move - you just need to put all your levels into strength. What is it, 16 for the purple flame shield? Levels come so easily at the beginning so you can get it done pretty quickly.

22 for flame shield, I believe.
I agree with upping your strength, though.
Also, stay light with your armor. It's more effective to dodge and roll than it is to have a high defense.

We should be good I think, if you're around 205. The general formula is +/- (10 + SL/10) difference. I'm actually playing right now, and am really flexible for whenever I can do it. I'm probably just gonna make the weapons with the Cloudstone/Spiderstone as I'm already +4 I may as well go all the way.

Coolio. I'll log on now. I'm in spirit form currently, so I'll lay down a sigil near the blacksmith in 2-1, as soon as I finish grabbing some stuff for you. I'll grab my fatal dagger, and some cloudstone/spiderstone.

If you could give me chunks, as opposed to just holding the mercury weapon, I'd kind of like to have a +5 uchigatana for pvp.

My psn and character name are both Maskim.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've actually been successful with parrying and dodging thus far so my plan was to stay on the lighter side. Unfortunately (from a video game playing perspective) I'm moving this week so I probably won't be playing much but I know I'll have the itch bad come next weekend.

On the other hand, THANK GOD we're moving this week. :)

Wasnt it found that pure black tendancy gives a higher drop rate of pure stones?

What is the world tendancy maskim is playing in?

I might suggest not logging in online getting it to pure black and try farming again.

I have everything in pure black, except my character tendency, which is only slightly whiter than neutral.
Aside from the higher drop rate, I needed pure black just to get the katana black phantom to show up. I do my farming offline, too, since the PW event started.

Should I save 8 levels and forego the purple flame shield and shoot for Adjudicator's? The strength requirement is 14 I think. And will I die quickly and often in 4-1 trying to get it?

Played all day yesterday got the shield and sword you guys recommended. I upgraded the sword a few times till now I need several chunks and I upgraded the shield once since I need more colorless. I lost my first big batch of souls 36k. I kept helping people beat the 4-3 (that blind guy) so I thought it was my turn to beat him. I called two people to help me and they both died in route. I then called another two and only one made it to the boss and I found out then that I couldnt solo the boss the way I had while helping others if I had to dodge so much. Going to try again tonight.

Oh and also I found two people doing a nasty trick to people. One guy invaded a friends game -I guess. And the buddy calls people to his server and his friend kills them as soon as they spawn. I didnt realize until they got me a few times that I lost souls that way.

LOL! Hats off to those griefers; that's hilarious.

Is there a guide or specific instructions anywhere on how to get down to the bottom of the right-hand pit in 2-2 (the shortest path to Flamelurker)? I keep having to go down the long way (via the elevator to the left) because I just can't figure out where to jump/step off.

This is the first time in this game that I've felt like it was just cheap/crappy/badly designed. Every other time I've died, it was because I messed up or didn't know the enemy's pattern etc. But in this dumb pit, no matter how carefully I move the camera around and look, there are multiple ledges where you just can't see the next ledge below you and you have to completely guess where to step off. So frustrating.

It should be easy enough to look it up on Youtube. That's how I finally got it. It'll take a few times, but once you get it you should be able to do it pretty consistently.

I played around with it... never thought of youtube.

The first fiew jumps are to the right.. use the wall to actually slow your fall and drop you to the ledge.

From that its pretty easy if you look down.. are you online? I know I wrote messages telling people where to drop from, I assume others do that as well.

Wear the Thief Ring and he becomes quite a bit easier, at least as a spellcaster. Also, if you have enough spell capacity, buy the intro spell Demon's Prank. It was practically MADE for this boss. He becomes one of the easiest bosses in NG+ though (up there with the 5-1 boss), as 2-3 casts of Firestorm = dead Old Hero.

Maybe adjust the brightness to see the ledges better? Sometimes that helps.

*Anyway, finished another game. Instead of going through another NG, I am just going to start a fresh temple knight. My other two characters are just regular knights.

Ah, good idea. I never thought about looking on YouTube. I do always play online, and sometimes I see messages in the pit but often I don't.

Actually, that brings me to messages: I really wonder how they work. Everyone says "the higher the rating, the longer they stay" but that doesn't make sense if it's that simple. That would just mean that the first people to play the game would have their messages showing and no one else could really ever leave a new one since obviously there would be a huge rating bias for older existing messages. Also, does that mean that if I leave a new message that it has to get at least a few ratings right away or no one will ever see it (as part of some timing system)? That doesn't sound right. What happens to the messages I leave that never get rated? Should I just erase them after awhile since no one will ever see them?

What about message limits? If I leave too many messages, do the first ones get replaced by later ones at some point? (e.g. my message max is 100 so message 101 causes message 1 to disappear). I haven't heard that, but if not, then isn't it to my benefit to just spam messages all over in the hopes of getting free healing all the time? Speaking of which, what's the deal with those "[Help me]" messages that have like 1500 recommendations? Did those lucky players just get healed left and right all over? Why are their [help me] messages so high when others never go above 2 or 3?

Anyway, so far I really only try to leave good helpful messages and rate helpful messages. The "help me" messages distract from the cool nature of the online system IMO. Still, it would be really interesting to know how the messages really work, what algorithm they use to decide which ones to show. I know I've seen messages disappear and appear dynamically while I'm standing there. In some cases, high-rated messages have disappeared right after I read them! Obviously, they can only show a small percentage of the messages people have left or the entire world would be carpeted with glowing red runes.

I went to Flamelurker by sheer mistake. I had just beat the boss b4 him and then wanted to just peek into the next area. I got sidetracked and fell. Then I couldnt get back up, but then I started seeing all these items I could fall to so I followed along and when I got stuck I waited till the game showed me another human player ghost moving forward and not dieing. I did what they did and found I was at the bottom. I didnt have enough gear or items I needed to battle the boss but got lucky and summoned two really good players who nearly beat the boss alone. I chimed in a little though. Awesome.

Thanks Nirron I have both those sitting around doing nothing. I will try this tonight. I am excited!

i knew that spell was good for something.

The spell comes in handy for other instances, too, but not really once you've done one playthrough. Throw a demon's prank when octopusmen are around to get them to not look at you so you can rush them, etc. It's only about as useful as shooting an arrow behind an enemy though, as they always stop to look for the sound if it hits close enough to them. I'd rather use a single arrow than have to equip Demon's Prank and use up a spell slot.
With the thief ring on, the Old Hero's so easy, it hurts. Run right by him to the area by the fog, with the broken stair case. Shoot some arrows at him until he starts heading at you, hide on staircase where he never swings his sword, wait for him to walk away again, and repeat as needed.

Thanks to a VERY cool CAGer, who I won't name just in case they want to remain anonymous, I can now scream from the top of the mountain, "PLATTED BITCHES!!!" ;)

Thank you very very much. Enjoy your new themes. =D

Oh, also, the theme isn't JUST the maiden in the nexus, although that's the bulk of it. If you wait long enough, you see other players, in soul form, falling from the top of the nexus and dying. Depending on how close they fall the the maiden, they startle her sometimes.

That theme looks badass.

Okay so I may have to stop doing the blue stone thing. At least with souls on hand. I lost 30k due to more and more doing this trick where they call you and then have their buddy who is invading kill you. One team of people even had three invaders who all blocked all the exits. I was going to run away and then go back using the other stone or even try to suicide. Another group was even smarter then used a guy who had not opened the door to the bottom of 4-2 and they trapped me in there until they killed me.

I was thinking more about this. I have never invaded another persons game so I dont know much about it but what I think is that these guys dont know the guy they are invading they just invade and then message him asking if they can work together to do this. I have seen it way to much from several different people for it to just be a passing fad among a select few. It sucks because the game is setup to make it perfect. They guy summoning me knows exactly where I will spawn and even what direction I am facing. I get him in the back right away most times. I started dropping the blue stone right near the mouth of the cliff last night so I could just roll off if I saw trouble but in truth that may give them the souls anyway.
You lose half your souls to a BP if a BP kills you. Otherwise, you can't lose souls.
Ah. So, that trick is especially nasty. Only go blue these days with unknowns if you have no souls I guess.
Actually, that brings me to messages: I really wonder how they work.
They remain until you log off. Otherwise they'd have a clusterfuck of messages all over that would eventually crash the server.
